The Wènqíjí of the late sixteenth century Míng scholar Zhāng Wèi 張位 contains a short chapter entitled “Local Pronunciations of Various Areas”. The work comprises a number of direct sound glosses on Chinese characters, with the glossing words used to indicate dialectal pronunciations of the glossed words. In the present article, we assume that Zhāng's glossing characters were to be read in the standard pronunciation of that period, i.e., in the so-called Nányīn pronunciation of the Guānhuà koine. The article examines one of the features of the translation of the Blau Atlas made by Epiphanius Slavinetsky from Latin in the 1650s. The work shows how Slavinetsky and his associates abandon one of the most important principles of their translation work - the widespread use of marginal glosses. This refusal is due to the desire to convey as much as possible the appearance of the Latin original, where the subheadings of each chapter are included in the margins. We will show what type of glosses were used by the translators at the initial stage of work, and which ones were reflected in the whit

The recent discovery of a few snippets with Old Frisian words from the 12th century was a sensational surprise for the study of Old Frisian (Langbroek 2015). The 8 words are linguistically interpreted according to the inflectional categories of the parallel Latin glosses. This is in line with the wide spread custom in mediaeval interlineair glossing practices. This article argues that Langbroek’s linguistic interpretation, which turns lesa ‘to redeem’ into a subjunctive or imperative and herte ‘heart’ into a plural form, is linguistically not sustainable. It is postulated that all word forms,

AbstractThis article demonstrates that some 180 of the 2,400 text glosses in the ‘Leiden Glossary’ derive from an epitome of the Etymologiae. A reconstruction of this lost source shows that it consisted of abbreviated entries from all twenty of Isidore's books, with selected books heavily glossed in Old English. Mirroring the encyclopedic scope of the Etymologiae, this seventh-century epitome was extensively excerpted by glossary-compilers and gave thousands of English words their first written form.

We then use the extensive documentation of the annotation, glossing, and punctuation of texts in Japan and China to identify similar practices in Vietnamese texts.
