Abstract:
Birds, including canaries and other birds, have become increasingly popular as pets. Bird fairs, where breeders gather and show their production in a championship setting, present a setting for possible Salmonella spp. contamination and transmission. Therefore, this study estimated the rate of Salmonella spp. isolation from cage papers, located in the bottom of cages of exotic pet birds, including canaries. Collected Salmonella isolates were used to determine the antimicrobial resistance profile to 52 antibiotics and 17 commercial disinfectants, based on pure or a mixture of acids, alcohols, aldehydes, alkalis, halogens, peroxygen, and quaternary ammonium compounds. The samples consisted of 774 cage papers taken in the 2015 Argentinean canary breeder championship, pooling three cage papers into one sterile sampling bag. Only one pool of the cage papers was positive for Salmonella spp. (0.4%), which belonged to the sample from three frill canary cages. Two strains of Salmonella serotype Glostrup were isolated, which were only resistant to sulfonamides and erythromycin and sensitive to alkali-based product PL301 AS. Although the rate of Salmonella spp. isolation from cage papers in an Argentinean canary breeder championship is low, it should not be discounted because Salmonella ser. Glostrup can be a source of human Salmonella outbreaks and they show high resistance to disinfecting products.

Abstract:
e21113 Background: Tryptase, a serine protease stored and released from mast cells granules has been identified as a new non-classical angiogenetic factor. Mast cells can release tryptase following c-Kit receptor activation. We have evaluated the correlations among the number of MCs positive to tryptase (MCDPT), the number of c-Kit receptor expressing cells (C-KREC) and microvascular density (MVD) in a series of 88 primary T1-3, N0-2 M0 female breast cancer by means of immunohistochemistry and image analysis methods. Methods: Six-micrometers thick serial sections of formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded bioptic tumor samples were microwaved at 500 W for 10 min. and treated with a 3% hydrogen peroxide solution. Sections were incubated with primary antibodies: anti-tryptase (AA1; Dako, Glostrup, Denmark), anti-c-Kit receptor (A4502;Dako, Glostrup, Denmark) and anti-CD34 (QB-END 10; Bio-Optica Milan, Italy). In serial sections MVD, MCDPT and C-KREC were counted by means of image analysis at x400. Results: Data demonstrated a significantly (r= ranging from 0.71 to 0.91; p: ranging from 0.001 to 0.003 by Pearson’s analysis respectively) correlation between MVD, MCDPT and C-KREC to each other. Conclusions: Published in vitro data suggest that tryptase induce angiogenesis in vascular endothelial cells and breast cancer cells lines. According to these data we shown that MVD, MCDPT and C-KREC paralleled to each other suggesting a role in in vivo breast cancer angiogenesis. In this context several tryptase inhibitors such as gabexate mesilate or nafamostat mesilate might be evaluated in clinical trials as a new antiangiogenetic approach.

Abstract:
As the proportion of adults aged 65 years and older continues to grow across the globe and edentulism rates decline, there is widespread concern about a rise in the prevalence of periodontal disease, characterized by chronic inflammation of tooth-supporting tissues induced by persistent infection. Compared to their younger counterparts, older adults experience a higher burden of periodontal disease, which can result in tooth loss, poor nutritional intake, higher prevalence of other chronic diseases, and a decrease in overall quality of life. While cross-sectional studies have underscored the role of chronic stress on periodontal disease progression in older adults, longitudinal evidence is currently lacking. This dissertation draws on prospective data from a birth cohort of older Danish adults (1914 Glostrup Aging Study) with 25 years of follow-up. Using physiological markers than span the metabolic, inflammatory, and cardiovascular systems, I developed a composite measure of allostatic load (AL) at age 80, defined as the cumulative biological damage that results from a whole-body adaptation to chronic stress. First, I identified social and behavioral predictors of high scores on AL. In men, those with no vocational training, unskilled occupation, low income, and a sedentary lifestyle were more likely to have high AL, consistent with a "weathering" pattern of biological systems resulting from chronic adversity over the life course. To test the hypothesis that high AL is longitudinally associated with periodontal disease, I evaluated bidirectional longitudinal associations using multiple measures of AL and periodontal disease. Results showed a positive nonlinear association of AL at age 70 with periodontal disease at age 85, but no association between periodontal disease at age 70 with AL at age 80. This finding confirms previous cross-sectional data, and supports the role of chronic stress on infection-induced inflammation. To test the hypothesis that high AL is associated with mortality risk, I examined this association longitudinally from ages 70 - 95. Compared to low AL, high AL was positively associated with all-cause mortality, and even stronger when cardiovascular disease mortality was considered. AL-mortality associations were higher among those who were dentate as compared to edentate, suggesting that dentate status modifies the relationship. Findings from this dissertation contribute to our understanding of the consequences of stress on periodontal disease in relation to aging and offer potential avenues for intervention.

Abstract:
Abstract A random sample of 3000 men and 1000 women, 40 years old, and residing in 11 municipalities around the Copenhagen County Hospital in Glostrup was drawn from the Danish Central Person Registry. The sample size was reduced to 3985 owing to decease (n = 2) and an error in the address list (n = 13). The total population of the sampling area was 328,070, i.e. 54 per cent of the Copenhagen County population and 6 per cent of the total Danish population.
