It is shown that the common practice of imaging the plasma directly onto the spectrometer entrance slit in analytical glow discharge optical emission spectrometry (GDOES) may induce analytical error when used with samples which are chemically heterogeneous. An alternative method for transferring the source emission to the entrance slit is demonstrated to eliminate the potential error, suggesting its routine use in analytical GDOES.

Surface layer hardness and concentration profiles of austenitic stainless steels after plasma carburizing and /or nitriding at 673 K were investigated. Carbon and nitrogen concentration were measured by glow discharge optical emission spectrometry (GDOES) and carbides or nitrides were detected by x-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) and TEM. The state of carbon at the treated surface was investigated by Raman spectroscopy. The integrity and quality of the passive layer is key to the overall performance for corrosion resistance of a coated surface. The evaluation of a Cr-based chemical conversion coating applied on an aluminium alloy has been conducted deploying an electrochemical method (EIS - Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy) and a spectroscopical method (GDOES - Glow Discharge Optical Emission Specstropscopy) for the depth profile and distribution of elements on the surface. Glow discharge optical emission spectroscopy (GDOES) is a modem analytical technique for the analysis of the chemical composition of bulk materials and the depth profiling of multi-layer structures. Most research in the use of GDOES has concentrated on developing accurate methodologies for quantitative analysis and depth profiling. However, this thesis presents a study on various aspects of surface layer evolution under argon ion etching in GDOES. The GDOES technique relies on the ion bombardment of sample surfaces which removes material from the surface, layer by layer, on the atomic scale. D
