The variation in wood density within growth rings was determined from X-ray negative images of wood samples of Gmelina arborea. The within-tree and between-tree comparisons showed that no two growth rings had exactly similar patterns of variation in the radial direction. The proportions of wood in four within-ring density classes were estimated. The variations in the proportions of wood in the four classes with age were nonlinear. Several ecological studies were carried out on the bivalve Limaria hians and the biogenic beds created by their byssal threads. Specimens used were collected from two populations located on the west coast of Scotland. Age, growth and population dynamics were analysed using several methods. The giant kokopu (Galaxias argenteus) is the largest of the galaxiid fishes, and is endemic to New Zealand. Some landlocked (non-migratory) populations exist, but giant kokopu are normally diadromous, and juveniles make up a small part of the annual whitebait run. The species is now regarded as threatened, and its rarity has led to controversy over proposed changes to whitebait fishing regulations. Although exploitation of the juveniles may be limiting recruitment to adult populations, the perceived decline of giant kokopu has been attributed mostly to the loss and degradation of its habitat.

A model of zinc accumulation by the American oyster, Crassostrea virginica, is developed by relating in-situ zinc body burden to time-integration of uptake. We reviewed the taxonomy of the Trogon rufus species-complex under the premises of the Biological Species Concept. Putative taxonomic units, breaks and transition zones, were visualised by heatmaps and isophenes (phenotypic contour lines) of the colour, barring, morphometric and song characters and tested by discriminant function analyses. Use of optimum levels of alkali/acid and other modifications in extraction methods were determined to increase the yield and quality of agar from red seaweed Gracilaria edulis (Gmelin) Silva. Presoaking of dry weeds in water for 2 hrs increase the yield but did not improve the gel strength of colloid. Several aspects of effects of the organophosphate pesticide diazinon on the American oyster Crassostrea virginica Gmelin were investigated. Uptake of diazinon directly from water was compared with uptake of diazinon sorbed to either fine sediment or algae; the primary route of assimilation seems to be from the water. Concentrations of diazinon between 0.91 and 2.03 mg/L inhibit shell growth during 96 hours of exposure; there is a sharp threshold of effect for this response which is probably an indirect one caused by lack of food during shell closure. The pedunculated cirripede Pollicipes pollicipes (Gmelin) is of considerable economic importance in Portugal, particularly along the southwest coast. The current knowledge of its biology is poor, as evidenced by the paucity of available literature. Over a period of two years, P. pollicipes populations at Castelejo and Zavial were sampled from different tidal levels at approximately monthly intervals.
