Abstract The genomic organization and mRNA expression of the human GNAL gene on chromosome 18p11.2, a region that has been associated with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, was determined. The GNAL gene was shown to span over 80 kb and consist of twelve exons, and its structure was very similar to adenyl cyclase stimulating G protein GSα. The start site of transcription was revealed by 5'-RACE. Two polyadenylation signals were found, and 3'-RACE assay was used to verify the functional site. At the imprinted mouse Gnas locus, expression of Nesp in the growing oocyte is required for methylation of the downstream Nespas-Gnasxl DMR and ExonlA DMR; resulting in silencing of Gnasxl and ExonlA, and expression of Gnas on the maternal allele. This thesis developed a novel adaptive methodology for the optimal design of additional sampling based on a geostatistical model that can preserve both multivariate non-linearity and spatial non-linearity present in spatial variables. Biological agents have been employed in a series of experiments to evaluate their efftcacy,in control of the citrus nematode and Liohippelates eye gnat in the Yuma mesa area. Steinernema riobravis, an entomopathological nematode, considered climatically adapted to western Arizona temperatures, was selected from commercially available sources. Sclerotinia sclerotiorum is a pathogen of crops grown in the muck soil regions of Quebec. Soil baiting tests indicated that the sclerotia of S. sclerotiorum are attacked and destroyed by the larvae of Bradysia coprophila and mycoparasites. Sclerotia with rinds partially damaged by the larvae were found to be more susceptible to mycoparasitism by Trichoderma viride. Increasing the organic matter content and porosity of soils resulted in increased damage to sclerotia when larvae were present.
