An early career as a theatre director had a fundamental, life-long impact on film director Joseph Losey, a factor consistently underestimated in critical and academic assessments of his filmmaking. This study regards Losey's film output as a cohesive whole, challenging commentators' habitual practice of dividing the director's career into discrete, often incongruous, chronological phases; in place of a

Abstract:
The relationship between dietary nutrient inputs, particularly energy and protein, and their partition between fibre, meat and other non-meat components in British fibre producing goats was studied in a series of four experiments. Experiment 1 indicated that increasing dietary energy concentration from 10.2 to 11.9 MJ ME/kg dry matter (DM) significantly (P &'60 0.05 to 0.001) improved liveweight gain, feed conversion efficiency, carcass weight, cross sectional area of M.longissimus dorsi , and increased fat thickness over N.serratus dorsalis . Values were also increased in the carcass for diss

The project of this thesis is to begin the task of re-assessing the notion of personhood, particularly in respect of its role in the Christian doctrine of the Trinity, in the light of post-structuralist critical theory. Taking Jacques Derrida's critique of western thought as its starting point, the author attempts to undertake a deconstructive reading of the notion of pesonhood and its conceptual background through the texts of philosophy and theology. In Chapter 1 the author portrays, in the style of cultural criticism, the central themes of Hebrew and Greek thought, and tradition has dominat

The aim of this thesis was to investigate decision-making in the management of minor illness, in the context of symptoms associated with analgesic use. In 2002, a cross-sectional survey was mailed to a random sample of the Scottish population (n=3000) asking about their use of medicines, particularly over-the-counter (OTC) analgesics. In 2004, qualitative interviews with 24 respondents asked about how and why people manage symptoms of minor illness associated with analgesic use in particular ways. The thesis examines the existence, or otherwise, of labour market segmentation in the UK labour market. Three different hypotheses are investigated. The existence of two self-contained labour market sectors, the difference in the wage and employment mechanisms across the two sectors and the lack of employee mobility among them. The first two hypotheses are investigated using cross-sectional data from the fifth wave of the British Household Panel Survey (BHPS) in the context of a switching regression model with endogenous selection and known sample separation. In a series of short term, laboratory-based experiments, the interaction between Gaeumannomyces graminis var. tritici (Ggt) and the antagonist Pseudomonas corrugata lux in the wheat rhizosphere was studied. The pseudomonad had been chromosomally huxAB marked, providing luminescence as the basis of measurement. During initial in vitro characterisation of the interaction between the Ggt and P.corrugata hix, the antagonist was observed to luminesce more in areas of colonies nearest to the fungus, possibly suggesting that signalling had occurred. Diphyllobothrium dendriticum and D. ditremum have a wide distribution in the trout of Scottish lochs, although no specific trends in their overall distribution have been observed. The seasonal recruitment trends and development of infections with Diphyllobothrium spp. pleroceroids in wild rainbow trout, in one particular Scottish loch, were monitored regularly for the period 1986 to 1989. Infection varied between these years, but in 1987 intensities from March to November reached their highest levels in November when sampling ended. In the first three decades since the granting of political independence to France's former African colonies, the novel form has been appropriated by postcolonial authors and articulates the possibility of a new relationship between the centre and the former margins. Fictional narrative has become central to the (re-) negotiation of power, authority, class and gender in a postcolonial African society. This thesis is a socio-historical study of selected texts which examines the re-writing of the African past and the appropriate of narrative voice by the inhabitants of marginal sites. Close readi

Abstract:
Quorum sensing using N-acyl homoserine lactone (N-AHL) signal molecules is a cell density-dependent mechanism which allows bacterial cells to co-ordinate their behaviour in concern with their own population size. Previous studies have indicated that the pathogenic fungus Gaeumannomyces graminis var. tritici (Ggt) secretes a homoserine lactone that promotes gene expression in the potential biocontrol bacterium Pseudomonas corrugata. The aim of this thesis was therefore to investigate the role of N-AHL signalling in interactions between these two organisms. It was demonstrated that Ggt does not

This thesis is an attempt to identify the problems bound up with the grace-responsibility tension in Paul's writings and to point out their significance for understanding the Christian life within the structures of his thought. We have tried to examine 'three main issues' in order to get a general picture of what Paul has taught in relation to the question of the grace-responsibility tension. This enables us to ascertain whether Paul's teaching discloses a consistent pattern of thought, or whether it includes differences in emphasis of elements of discord.
