Abstract:
Abstract. Background: In a goalkeeping task that entailed intercepting fast-approaching balls, the present research examined whether training under conditions more intense than those of a subsequent test yields a performance improvement. Methods: Fifty participants (38 males) carried out the goalkeeping task in two conditions: In the progressive-intensity condition, participants carried out three training sessions with increasing intensity (i.e., balls shot at increasingly faster speeds) that exceeded that of a pretest and a posttest; in the fixed-intensity condition, participants also carried out three training conditions but at a fixed intensity equal to that of both the pretest and the posttest. Results: Performance in the goalkeeping task improved from pretest to posttest equally under the two intensity conditions. Similarly, performance on a different task that required fast responses to visual targets also increased from pretest to posttest, likewise equally for the two intensity conditions. Conclusions: Overall, these results challenge the common belief in sports that more intense training than a subsequent test is beneficial for performance.

Abstract:
Physical abilities are essential to goalkeepers in soccer but the involved cognitive abilities for these players have only recently become the focus of extensive research. In this study, we investigated the role of different aspects of attention in a basic goalkeeping task in soccer. One hundred participants assumed the role of a goalkeeper in immersive virtual reality (VR) and carried out a task that entailed blocking balls shot towards their goal. In addition, they carried out two computerized tasks each assessing different attentional abilities: the Attention Network Test provided scores for three well-established networks of attention, namely the alerting, the orienting, and the executive control. The Whack-a-Mole task evaluated inhibitory control, by measuring performance in a classic Go/No-Go task and tapping on response inhibition. A regression analysis revealed that all three attention network scores contributed to performance in the VR goalkeeping task. Furthermore, performance in the Whack-a-Mole task correlated significantly with performance in the VR goalkeeping task. Overall, findings confirm that cognitive skills relating to attention play a critical role in the efficient execution of soccer-specific tasks. These findings have important implications for the training of cognitive skills in sports.

Abstract:
The purpose of the current article is to review findings from the visual anticipation literature with a particular focus on penalty kick goalkeeping in Association football. We give a brief introduction to the area of research before providing reviews of two recent studies. First, we focus on the applied implications of a study that examined the effect of deception and non-deception penalty kick strategies on goalkeeping performance. Second, we consider further limiting factors on the accuracy of goalkeeper visual anticipation through examination of the relationship between goalkeeper action capabilities and the timing and accuracy of goalkeeper responses. Finally, the implications of the results are considered with recommendations for coaching practices aimed at improving visual anticipation skills.

Abstract:
This review evaluates previously published findings relating to the needs of a football goalkeeper during match performance. Whilst there has been much interest in some aspects of goalkeepers training, performance analysis and needs analysis, these have been from closed skill penalty situations or reported as comparisons with outfield players. This paper identifies important demands, assesses the implications for coaching and as a result highlights where the focus for effective future research should be to further enhance the development of goalkeeping performance.

Abstract:
In sports science, the link between the experimental protocol and the subject's behaviour in real condition is a key issue. Virtual reality enables to examine this topic because of the reproducibility of situations and the total control of animated humanoids in situations similar to the real world. This study aimed to analyze the influence of the degree of perception-action coupling on the performance of handball goalkeepers in a virtual environment. 8 national handball goalkeepers were asked to react to the actions of a virtual handball thrower in two conditions: a perception-action uncoupled condition (defined as a judgment task) and a perception-action coupled condition (defined as a motor task). In the judgment condition, goalkeepers were asked to make a perceptual judgment with their hand in their own time after the virtual throw; in the motor task condition, goalkeepers had to react in real-time to the virtual throwing motion. Results showed that percentage of successful response was higher in the motor task condition and radial error (distance between the ball and the closest limb when trial was unsuccessful) was lower for the same condition. Implications of our findings are discussed, as well as suggestions for further research..

Abstract:
Medicine balls have traditionally been used to develop upper body strength through catching and throwing exercises. Medicine ball training is also designed to enhance power, strength, flexibility and agility. In addition, they are used for abdominal strength gains and rehabilitation exercises for various injuries to the upper torso.
