According to farm records, cultured Haliotis midae (50-70 g.abalone⁻¹) were growing 10% slower in winter when compared to summer. This reduction in growth rate also coincided with enlarged gonads. Initial trials showed that there were differences in mean monthly growth rates ranging from 1.97 – 5.14 g abalone⁻¹ month⁻¹, and gonad bulk index (GBI) also varied between months (GBI range: 26.88 ± 12.87 to 51.03 ± 34.47). From January 2012 to December 2012 I collected adult oysters from two intertidal populations on a monthly basis in the Coos Bay estuary, Oregon for histological analysis of their gonads. Gametogenesis and spawning occur seasonally from May through September, when water temperatures exceed 14.5&deg C, with brooding oysters found from July through September. Oocyte diameters increased significantly from May to June, and from June to July within oyster populations at Haynes Inlet and Coalbank Slough, respectively. Male gametogenesis initiated in May at Haynes Inlet and in June at Coalbank Slough.

lin-28 was first characterized as a developmental timing regulator in Caenorhabditis elegans. Loss of lin-28 function (lin-28(lf)) mutants skip the hypodermal cell fates specific to the 2nd larval stage. Here, we studied two aspects of lin-28 which had not yet been investigated. First, we show that lin-28(lf) mutants exhibit reduced fertility associated with abnormal somatic gonadal morphology.
