<p>The philosophy of existentialism pays great attention to the fate of human beings as individualist embodiments. This also becomes a manifestation of human’s freedom which receives less attention due to its exclusion under the strong influence of Hegel’s doctrine essentialist philosophy or system of thought that emphasizes collectivity. The emergence of existentialism itself in turn propagates into the polemical invention of humans upon their God. Abstract Christian existentialism is a stepping stool by which we can approach Dana Gioia’s poems of doubt. Such poems—and here we will consider just one, “The Burning Ladder”—contain “an essentially religious irruption and claim, an agony of faith, the cry of the subjectivity towards its God,” and evince “a revelation of the person and of his anguish in the face of the nothingness which is non-being in the existent, the ‘crack in the existent’ ”; read alongside crucial works of Christian existentialism and mysticism, Gioia’s poem reveals these cracks as rungs on which the faithful lover can c

The death of god, which refers to the absence of god's value, weight, significance, and role from people's life experience, is among the most dominant themes of existential literature, especially that of Sartre. It is heavily investigated in his theoretical as well as creative works, such as Being and Nothingness (1969) and The Flies (1989) as it constitutes the cornerstone of his philosophical views of Existentialism, nihilism, freedom, and responsibility. In this paper I critically examine Brian Leftow's attempt to construct a theistic semantics for counterpossibles, one that can be used to make sense of the fact that propositions, which exist necessarily, nevertheless depend on God as their cause. I argue that the impressive theoretical framework erected by Leftow cannot guarantee an asymmetrical dependence of propositions on God, and ultimately leads to a semantic collapse in which every counterpossible comes out false. I end by defending an alternative account of God and propositions – what I call ‘theistic existentialism’. It is shown how t

This mediation happens in the context of the world – in the existential categories of life. Mediation takes place in this world – in our daily experiences. Frei’s own preference for a “linear” and “cumulative” method built upon the starting point of a realistic narrative reading of the gospels is unpacked and explored. Abstract:
I use Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man to consider the requirements of existentialism to be relevant to racialized experience. Black existentialism is distinguished from white existentialism by its focus on anti-black racism. However, black existentialism is similar to white existentialism in its moral requirement that agents take responsibility so as to be in good faith. Ralph Ellison's invisible man displays good faith at the end of the novel by assuming responsibility for his particular situation. The idiosyncratic development of the novel can be interpreted as an example of the ways in which existentialist values ought to be instantiated through unique individual experience. However, blackness, or any racial identity, is not itself an existential structure because it is not universal. Rather, existentialist requirements for good faith can be applied to racialized situations by both whites and blacks.

Abstract:
After World War II, Black writers and thinkers, from Richard Wright to bell hooks, influenced by French existentialists like Albert Camus and Jean-Paul Satre, adapted existentialism as a way to explain and respond to the African American experience. In his novels, Frank Yerby displays a sophisticated awareness of philosophical ideas, especially absurdism, and theological questions, despite his insistence that his novels could not be “reduce[ed] to a morality play” (Hill, “Interview,” 212). Yerby, in addition to using fiction to debunk historical myth, develops arguments about religion—that religion is invented “nonsense,” and, therefore, not worth killing or dying for, that God, if he exists, is cruel, careless, or distant, and that morality need not hew to an a priori standard. Yerby, then, responded to religious belief and voiced a philosophical response to human suffering (though, not particularly African American suffering) that was shaped by absurdist thought.

Abstract:
John Macquarrie (1919–2007), a Fellow of the British Academy, was the foremost Anglican systematic theologian of the twentieth century. His many books cover a wide range of topics, from studies of existentialist philosophy to expositions of systematic Christian theology, writings on mysticism and world religion, and analyses of ethical thought. Macquarrie was always a theologian of the church, using a philosophical vocabulary that united philosophical idealism, existentialism, and Anglo-Saxon analytical philosophy in an original and fruitful way. His masterpiece was the 1966 Principles of Christian Theology, which works through almost every aspect of Christian doctrine in the light of the concepts of human nature and of God that he had forged from idealism, from Martin Heidegger, and from an increasingly sacramental and mystical approach to Christian faith. In 1970, Macquarrie was offered, without his prior knowledge, the Lady Margaret Chair of Divinity at Christ Church, University of Oxford. He received various honours that testify to the high regard in which he was held both in America and in Britain.

Abstract:
Spark’s characters live out their lives ‘next door to death’, in plots which often turn on those characters’ efforts to control the future beyond their own death by means of wills and legacies. For Sartrean existentialism, human beings live in a world without God, making themselves by their own individual choices. Spark resists this secular framework by building her plots around apparently supernatural events, such as the ‘typing ghost’ who predicts the future in The Comforters and the phone calls in Memento Mori which remind characters they must die. The introduction of the supernatural reveals a world which cannot be comprehended by the kinds of realism to which Sartre’s secular philosophy was committed.
