Abstract:
Almost 10 years after the attack on World Trade Center Sept. 11 2001, Osama bin Laden was shot and killed on May 2 2011 in Pakistan. How was this event framed by the media with regards to the global war on terror? This study compares two different American newspapers – the New York Times and the New York Daily News – and how they framed the war on terrorism in the Middle East from May 2 to May 15 2011. By analyzing the framing in a perspective of the four functions of framing theory: define problems, diagnose causes, make moral judgments and suggest remedies, we found considerable differences in each papers frames. Through a qualitative text analysis of the opinion pages in these two newspapers, using three themes as a base, we found a number of differences. While the New York Times contained a form of open discussion about problems and remedies, New York Daily News takes an emotional and moral approach. These differences in content may affect the opinions of the readers. We speculate that the more open and suggestive nature of the New York Times, also opens the minds of the readers enabling them to form opinions in a liberated sense. Thus the more closed, emotional and moral nature of the New York Daily News may have greater impact on an individual’s ability to form its own opinions and moral values.

Wilkins, Christina. "God is (un)dead : religion and identity in post-9/11 vampire narratives." Thesis, University of Southampton, 2015. https://eprints.soton.ac.uk/388834/.

Abstract:
Cultural narratives have long played a valuable role in mediating difficult and politically sensitive topics. Investing metaphorical tropes with cultural significance offers audiences the opportunity to consider new perspectives and prompt important discussions. One of these tropes that has become ever more prominent in the last decade is that of the vampire. This thesis is concerned with the questions of how the figure of the vampire is used in modern narratives, and how it has changed from previous incarnations, particularly in American narratives. The rise of the modern vampire coincides with the aftermath of 9/11 and it is this link that is primarily explored here. Through an examination of three texts, Being Human, True Blood and The Strain, these chapters construct an argument for the vampire as a key figure in post-9/11 narratives and imbued with a religious significance. Being Human establishes the difference between the UK and US interpretation of the figure through a direct comparison of an original series and its American remake. This highlights the religious aspect to the figure, along with reinforcing the Americanisation of the vampire, discussed in relation to the series. With this established, the argument moves on to True Blood, looking at patriotism, terrorism and the presentation of the ‘other’ onscreen in the series. Particularly, it posits the vampire in True Blood as being representative of the Muslim other, providing a unique method for discussing post-9/11 issues of religion and identity. The argument then moves on to looking at The Strain, which presents a more explicit link between vampires and 9/11, and argues for a need for narratives that do this. By looking at theoretical research on the issues raised in the texts, particularly those of trauma and faith, it highlights a change in perspectives. Ultimately, the exploration of these texts shows a valuable use of the vampire in working through the trauma of 9/11, a need for an American vampire and the importance of religion (in its many forms) in cultural narratives.

Uhde, Bernhard. "Is God dead? The Nietzschean phrase about the death of God” and the vitality of monotheisms in the Modern Age." Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú - Departamento de Humanidades, 2014. http://repositorio.pucp.edu.pe/index/handle/123456789/113123.

Abstract:
Currently, the great monotheistic religions –Judaism, Christianity and Islam– may seem anachronic. Judging from their principles and rituals, they appear to belong to the Middle Ages. This seems to be confirmed by a brief consideration of the history of Western science, certainly marked by first philosophy, and by its division into its three periods: ancient, medieval and modern. The One, recognized by Plotinus as the necessary condition of all multiplicity, and which religions identify with God, may be considered the principle of medieval thought. Alongside Descartes, modernity replaced this principle, and by the end of this period Nietzsche claimed that God is dead! God remains dead! We have killed him!” But, is God dead? If the Modern Age, which started with Nietzsche, has killed God, does it mean that monotheistic religions have also been deprived of life and vitality? Or do they continue to live thanks to a free and self-determined assent to a living God that can be thought in relation to the world and to men and women?

This study is a comparative study based on how Fredrich Nietzsche and his God is dead may be significant for how developers and consumers perceive cookies in the browser. The goal of the study is that through Fredrich Nietzsche's eyes examine how cookies death affect the browser and with that knowledge problematize the use of cookies in webapplications. The study is based on the question: How are cookies perceived as a being with power at its disposal? By looking at how cookies are currently being used for purposes other than the basic idea they once had, it is possible to see how cookies reliability today is doubtful. Cookies that have long dominated the development of applications on the Internet appears today in many forums as a threat to privacy and security. Cookies that were once a symbol of security and robust applications is undergoing a change and therefore can no longer serve as a meaningful vehicle for the whole world of Internet users. The study demonstrates that no pro or con arguments can be made that alone will tell if we are to retain cookies or not. However, God is dead serve as an approach to consider cookies as a holder of power because the developers as well as consumers are affected by the death of cookies.

A historiografia do teatro brasileiro, pouco a pouco, vem ganhando novos contornos e novas análises.

Abstract:
Where the Dead Remain is a murder mystery set in a Post-Katrina New Orleans where the gods, magic and monsters of various world mythologies actually exist. The story follows a week in the life of Jude Duboisson, a once magician who is struggling with the loss of his magic and the life he had known in the wake of the storm, as he is pulled out of his torpor and into the affairs of the mighty once again. He is tasked with discovering who murdered Dodge Renaud, the fortune god of New Orleans. What he discovers, though, are some surprising truths about the fundamental nature of things: about loss, about New Orleans, and about himself.

Livaniou, Krystallia. Thesis, Paris 4, 2012. http://www.theses.fr/2012PA040003.

Full text
Abstract:
Greek folk songs are infused with a profound religiosity that appears both as a framework and as a means of action. The folk poet has a multidimensional relationship with the God of the Bible and of the Old Testament and makes saints and angels active and recurrent personalities in his texts; they evolve in parallel with the heroes, and their destinies intertwine. Charos is a mythical figure that plays a fundamental role throughout the songs. A mythologically and symbolically sophisticated personality, Charos is the pillar of the lament songs. His ambiguous relationship with the divine determines his relationship with man, and makes him a separate being. Both incarnation of evil and agent of death, his rich historical journey reveals his many faces, as well as his links with some heroic and ambiguous figures such as Digenis or Tsamados. Nature and the animals hold a significant role, characterised by a profound sacredness, and they accompany man in all aspects of his personal and social life. Their ability to transform and their role as announcers in the ballads, place the animals on the front of the stage and grant them a major role in the unfolding of the action. The poet attaches particular importance to the social aspect of the sacred by exploring the notion of divine betrayal but also that of obedience of man to his god. Monastic life and the clergy, as well as religious diversity, become objects of social criticism, and a source of humour. Folk songs preserve an important number of myths by adapting them, that have a literary presence in the Hellenic territory: the myths of Tantalus, Calypso and Adonis belong to them. The ancient heritage of the public expression of grief, of the redemption of the dead and of the hero's tomb, forms the basis of folk philosophy and makes death a true crossroads of cultures

The aim of this mini-dissertation is to map out the nature of these contested knowledges of the Prestwich Street dead, and to describe and analyse the struggles of dominance and resistance these different ways of knowing gave rise to. My argument throughout is that out of the clashing of these knowledges emerged a frontier - a discursive space of conflict and turbulence that came into being with the surfacing of the dead, and dissipated with an official decision to prevent basic anatomical research on their skeletal remains. If this discursive battle and this frontier opened up the post-apartheid public sphere to new and emergent (South) African identities, then it also closed down the public sphere with the further entrenchment of particular disciplinary identities and formations, namely archaeology, physical anthropology, development, and heritage resources management.

Mutemererwa, Anderson Mufudzi. "A nonparametric approach to productive efficiency measurement : an application of bootstrap DEA to gold mining." Thesis, University of Hull, 2007. http://hydra.hull.ac.uk/resources/hull:12789.

Full text
Abstract:
In this dissertation the technical efficiency in gold mining is investigated. To the best available knowledge, this is the first such study on gold mining, whether on a localised (one country) or for a cross-section of countries. Since the work by Farrell (1957), much work has been done using nonparametric methods such as DEA. Although extensions in DEA technique, such as bootstrapping have been available for some time, their use has been limited in comparison with the number of overall DEA studies carried out. In this dissertation both DEA and bootstrap DEA are applied to two gold mining cross sectional samples, one on Zimbabwe consisting of thirty-four mines, and the an international one which also included some Zimbabwean mines which comprise fifty-nine observations. The main reason for carrying out the study is an interest in gold mining in general and its importance to Zimbabwe in particular. As will be noted in Chapter 2, the economic development of Zimbabwe has been linked, to a varying extent over the ages, to its growth of the gold mining sector. The results of the dissertation provide some useful insights into the relative performances of gold mines and also some characteristics of the Zimbabwean gold mining sector. The main results indicate that gold mining is characterised mainly by technical efficiency dominating scale efficiency. This is particular relevant when the Zimbabwean mines are compared with their international counterparts. Zimbabwean mines are found to be relatively technically efficient but less so when overall efficiency is considered. In fact they have the lowest overall efficiency scores in the international sample. The results also indicate that mines from the so-called developed mining economies, Australia, Canada, the US and South Africa are the benchmarks in terms of optimal operations. It is mines from these countries which define the overall efficiency frontier. The results of both the samples highlight potential shortcomings in applying DEA and bootstrap extension to gold mining, both for single country and for cross-country cases. Additionally, there are possibilities, with adequate data, of relating country-specific characteristics to differences in overall efficiency among countries. Finally there are indications that including mineralogical factors such as the recovery rate in the production technology has an effect on technical efficiency. Mines with low recovery rates tend to exhibit comparatively higher technical efficiency. The study does have some limitations, mainly because of lack of data. In particular, there were problems in coming with attributing the contribution of capital services to efficiency with the result that a different measure for the flow of capital services is used for each sample. In addition, the two samples are for different time periods. This limits comparative analysis.

Abstract:
Children with severe, prelingual deafness experience considerable problems in reading and learning to read. Moreover, it has been widely reported that the deaf rarely develop in reading beyond a reading age of nine years. The research reported examines these claims and provides evidence that: (1) deaf children do acquire higher-order, top-down, reading skills; (2) deaf children possess undifferentiated story schemata in both reading and non-reading story situations and these limit their top-down processing of whole stories; and (3) deaf children can acquire more differentiated story schemata and can learn to use these to read more 'schematically' at the whole-passage level. The elements of a model for the reading of the deaf are presented and its implications for the teaching of the deaf are discussed. It is suggested that in teaching the deaf to read, emphasis should be placed upon their top-down reading strengths.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis starts by an analysis of backward stochastic differential equations (BSDEs) with jumps driven by random measures possibly of infinite activity with time-inhomogeneous compensators. Under concrete conditions that are easy to verify in applications, we prove existence, uniqueness and comparison results for bounded solutions for a class of generators that are not required to be globally Lipschitz in the jump integrand. The rest of the thesis deals with robust valuation and hedging in incomplete markets. The focus is on the no-good-deal approach, which computes good-deal valuation bounds by using only a subset of the risk-neutral measures with economic meaning (e.g. bounds on instantaneous Sharpe ratios, optimal growth rates, or expected utilities). Throughout we study a notion of good-deal hedging consisting in minimizing some dynamic risk measures that allow for optimal risk sharing with the market. Hedging is shown to be at least mean-self-financing in that hedging errors satisfy a supermartingale property under suitable valuation measures. We derive constructive results on good-deal valuation and hedging in a jump framework using BSDEs with jumps, as well as in a Brownian setting with drift uncertainty using classical BSDEs and with volatility uncertainty using second-order BSDEs. We provide new examples which are particularly relevant for actuarial and financial applications. Under ambiguity about the real-world measure, a worst-case approach under multiple reference priors leads to good-deal hedging that is robust w.r.t. uncertainty in that it is at least mean-self-financing uniformly over all priors. This yields that good-deal hedging is equivalent to risk-minimization if drift uncertainty is sufficiently large.

Abstract:
The productive chain of the sugar-energy sector is of great importance to the development of the country, reaching almost 2% of PIB. An important contribution of the sugar-energy sector to the current Brazilian economy is relative to the production of renewable energy. In Brazil\'s primary energy matrix, renewable energy accounts for an important 46.9% share compared to 6.1% that the OCDE countries consume, and is even larger than the share of renewable energy consumed in the world (13.2%). Of the 46.9% of Brazilian energy consumed, 18.8% is derived from sugarcane, followed by 13.9% hydroelectric power and 10.2% coal. The increase in technical efficiency is a relevant factor for the competitiveness of the sector and, although Brazil occupies a prominent position in the production of bioenergy, the sugar and ethanol mills have been facing a crisis culminating with a retraction of the production and the closing of several industrial plants. Industrial technical efficiency is the main performance indicator of a sugar and ethanol plant, and can be translated as the percentage of cane sugar that is recovered and processed into sugar, ethanol and other products. Thus, given the current crisis of the sector, increased competition and optimization of productivity, productive units need to increase their efficiency in relation to the use of inputs. In order to contribute to the improvement of the efficiency and competitiveness of the sugar and ethanol plants, the general objective of this thesis was to propose a good operating practice that will contribute to increase the technical efficiency of the plants. To that end, the methodological procedures used involved a quantitative and qualitative approach. In the first step, the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) technique was used, together with the quintile analysis and truncated multilinear regression, so that it was possible to perform an analysis of the information from the database used and provided by a company in the region of Piracicaba. In a second moment, a case study was carried out at a mill considered efficient in the region of Ribeirão Preto, state of São Paulo, and an interview with two experts on sugar and ethanol production processes aimed at understanding why certain plants are more efficient than others. Finally, the information from both stages was cross-referenced and analyzed, leading to the proposal of good operational practices, which are likely to increase technical efficiency and consequently increase competitiveness in the sugar and ethanol plants.

Trost, Travis Darren. "The fourth gospel as reaction to militant Jewish expectation of kingship, reflected in certain dead sea scrolls." Thesis, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/1985.

Full text
Abstract:
The discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls has provided an opportunity to reexamine the formation of the Gospel of John. This study will utilize Dead Sea finds coupled with other Second Temple literature to examine how the Gospel of John portrays Jesus as being a king. The approach of this study to use a narrative approach that builds on the Gospel of John as a finished text. The contribution of a source critical approach is not disparaged but the narrative approach will allow the Johannine community to be seen in the context of the immediate post-Second Temple era. The limited literacy of the probable first audience of this text suggests that a narrative approach will best be able to understand the background to the formation of the Gospel of John. A central contention of this study is that the Gospel of John was composed after the Jewish Revolt and after the Synoptics. Thus it deserves the appellation of the Fourth Gospel and is called such in this study. The Fourth Gospel was composed at a time when Roman interest in anything connected to Judaism was sure to attract special interest. Thus the portrayal of Jesus as the Davidic Messiah needed to be handled carefully. The imagery of the new David found in 4Q504 compared with the imagery of Jesus being the Good Shepherd becomes an important part of the argument of this study on whether this Gospel portrays Jesus as being the Davidic Messiah. Jesus as the Good Shepherd showed Jews that Jesus is the Davidic Messiah without overtly offending Roman sensibilities. Furthermore evidence from Christian and Jewish sources indicates that an interest in a Third Temple was still stirring between the Jewish and Bar-Kochba Revolts. The Fourth Gospel shows Jesus as the Davidic Messiah who replaces the Temple because the Good Shepherd was the perfect sacrifice.

Perumalil, Ranjith Chandy. "Style Transfer For Visual Storytelling A Case Study: The Hindu Mythological Character, Yamah, in the Style of the American Film Director, Tim Burton." Thesis, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/1969.1/ETD-TAMU-2011-08-9879.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis, the concept of style transfer for visual storytelling is introduced. Style transfer for visual storytelling is the process of identifying a definitive style of a source, such as an artist or culture, and applying the features of that style to a target, such as a character which has a different style. As a proof of concept, the style of the American film director Tim Burton is transferred to a character from Hindu mythology, Yamah. The style transfer is done based on the concept of 'Pattern Language' introduced by Christopher Alexander et al., in his book, 'A Pattern Language'. A set of patterns is developed based on the source and target. The target is then designed based on the patterns. The design is then visualized in a suitable medium.

Crilley, Mariah. ""individual yet as one": Performing Deafness and Performing Community in Mark Medoff's Children of a Lesser God." 2013. http://digital.library.duq.edu/u?/etd,162282.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis, I examine the relationship between deafness, women, and performance in Mark Medoff's Children of a Lesser God. The play was a massive popular success, both in its run on Broadway and its movie adaptation. Deafness and deaf people had never been so visible in American hearing culture. More importantly, the play coincided with civil rights movements by people with disabilities, which culminated in the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Disabilities, including deafness, were called into being as part of a national identity. These movements posited self-determination but ultimately relied and thrived on a communal and relational sense of identity. I argue that the play challenges individualistic modes of identification through its protagonist, Sarah, a deaf woman whose "voice" is always translated through the audience. The play overtly and politically calls for a reconceptualization of American identity along the lines of deaf or disability and female identity theories, which typically value community and interdependence over individualism. Moreover, the genre amplifies this call for community.

Greenberger, David Simon. "A comprehensive analysis of reward and punishment in the Rabbinical literature of the middle ages." Thesis, 1995. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/16875.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation concentrates on those factors which form the doctrine of G-dly reward and punishment. In other words, the philosophical approach amongst Jewish thinkers from the Middle Ages to the above subject, which taken together give expression to the doctrine of reward and ptmishment, or at least to the possibility of determining such a doctrine. The definition of correct behaviour is not of interest for pwposes of this dissertation, nor is human judgement of behaviour, even according to a G-dly doctrine; only the A-lmighty's judgement and implementation thereof The following points are of note. Research into the specific approach of one individual philosopher is not the aim of this dissertation, but rather a collective crystallised viewpoint according to various different Jewish philosophers, in order to reach a harmonious formation of the desir~ goal. Hence the details are also important since they assist towards the goal. The views of the philsophers are of interest and not their source, viz. from whom these views were received or by whom the philosophers were influenced, as is usually the case in research. Nevertheless, this aspect is elaborated upon in the introduction to this dissertation, in the style of the customary academic research approach. An analytical comparison is made between the opinions of various authors, taking into account the finer points of their words, as well as between the differing opinions expressed by a single author in his various writings, and conclusions are drawn, the results of which are highly significant. Besides the fact that it is not within our power to adjudicate between the views of the great Jewish thinkers, this is even more true here, due to the metaphysical nature of the subject, which makes logical, rational-realistic judgement very difficult. Nevertheless, some criteria have been established for making such a decision. In summary, this dissertation is an attempt to research many diverse opinions in the treasury of Jewish thought from the Middle Ages, and to extract those opinions from which a complete system of the doctrine of reward and punishment can be built.

Abstract:
In this work, I will analyze several ancient myths, which are bonded by theme of chthonic symbolism. Vegetation cycle, dead and rebirth are topics, which we think were important for ancient cultures and analyzed myths should be a way, how those civilizations interpreted and understood to various aspects of rebirth and periodicity of life. In my effort to better comprehension of various attempts to cycles of vegetation and life, I will analyze several chthonic myths of ancient societies, which I will compare afterwards. Methodology of my analysis is inspired by narrative analysis and studies of folktales made by Vladimir Propp. I am using my own method based on his analysis of characters and their function. I am mostly focusing on characteristic of persons in myth, their role and function and on presence of chthonic symbols. This analysis is used for comparison of specific aspect of researched myths. Outputs of this research are some similarities founded in structure of myths, mostly in characteristic and roles of specific characters. On the other hand, some deities, which were commonly equated for instance by J.G. Frazer, are looking much more different, in their roles in researched myths. Analysis of methodology leads me to belief, that bigger attention to specific myths could be more useful, than...

The purpose of this study was to understand and analyze techniques applied in the taekwondo flyweight women’s division at Asia Pacific Deaf Games Taoyuan 2015 and further analyze the application of the left or right foot during active or passive attack based on the attack and scoring ratio to measure the attack rate, scoring rate, success rate, and to analyze the player’s habitual attach techniques and effects. This study useed video observation methods to record and collect, the results of which were then processed and analyzed to describe the attack, scoring, and success rate of active and passive, left and right foot, front and back foot, as well as six attack techniques during the three rounds of each game. The conclusions of this study were as follows. First, round kicks were the major attack techniques while round kicks and down drop kicks were most frequently applied. Second, the attack on the right back foot was the highest (in frequency). Third, attack format success rate analysis: the active attack success rate was the highest on the left back foot; the passive attack success rate was the highest on the left back foot. Fourth, attacks were mainly composed of round kicks, front kicks, and down drop kicks. Fifth, the success rate of the down drop kicks was the highest, the second and third highest being front fists and round kicks. Sixth, the three-round attack comparison showed that the first and third rounds were the highest (in frequency). Seventh, during the three rounds, the scoring was the highest in round one. Eighth, loss of points was the highest in round two. Ninth, the key to player Peng’s victory was her excellent attack ability.

Abstract:
This thesis is concerned with, in the words of Song of Songs, finding an appropriate answer to Qohelet's vanity - vanity of a human life and things that inherently come with it, as Qohelet himself proclaims in his book. The first chapter introduces the Book of Qohelet and aims to capture the main themes of vanity and transience, while also providing the ways out from this situation, as presented by Qohelet. The second chapter introduces the reader to the Song of Songs book while also describing its content which concerns the interpretation of love between a man and a woman. The third chapter brings forward efforts of the author and the main themes and conclusions of the book are analysed. This allows - in the conclusion of this thesis - to answer the question of whether the love in the Songs of Songs is a possible answer to Qoheleth's vanity - the transience of a human life, as brought out by Qohelet in his work.

Assa, Hirbod. "On some aspects of coherent risk measures and their applications." Thèse, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/1866/7034.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to study several aspects of risk measures particularly in the context of financial applications. The primary framework that we use is that of coherent risk measures as defined in Artzner et al (1999). But this is not the only class of risk measures that we study here. We also investigate the concepts of natural risk statistics Kou et al (2006) and convex risk measure Follmer/ and Schied (2002). The main contributions of this Thesis can be classified in three main axes: Capital allocation, risk measurement and capital requirement and solvency. In chapter 2, we characterize risk measures with the Lebesgue property on bounded càdlàg processes. This allows to present two applications in risk assessment and capital allocation. In chapter 3, we extend the concept of natural risk statistics to the space of infinite sequences. This has been done in order to introduce a consistent way of constructing risk measures for data bases of any size. In chapter 4, we discuss the concept of Good Deals and how to deal with a situation where these pathological positions are present in the market. Finally, in chapter 5, we try to relate all three chapters by extending the definition of Good Deals to a larger set of risk measures that somehow includes the discussions in chapters 2 and 3.
