Syftet med uppsatsen ”Plikt och elände” var att sätta 1900-talets statare och deras levnadsförhållande i fokus genom att jämföra det muntliga berättandet av en före detta statarunge med tre skönlitterära verk. Verken skrevs av Ivar Lo-Johansson och ingår i den så kallade ”statarskolan” (kollektivistiska berättelser), i Ivar Los fall ofta baserade på hans egna upplevelser från barndomen. Uppsatsens analys omfattar ämnen som statarnas boende, flyttarna, kvinnornas utsatthet, maten med mera. Resultatet visar att den muntliga källan och romanerna stämmer bra överens i beskrivandet av statarlivet.

This chapter traces the transformation of the five slain missionaries from admirable but tragic victims to martyrs and paragons of evangelical spirituality. The American evangelical press emphasized the triumph of faith in the face of death, and critics were silenced. The men’s story was published in the widely circulated Reader’s Digest, and Elisabeth Elliot, widow of one of the slain missionaries, wrote Through Gates of Splendor, published in 1957 and featuring all five men as case studies of true holiness. It became an immediate bestseller and the defining missionary martyr narrative for American evangelicals during the second half of the twentieth century. Two biographies—one of Jim Elliot, the other of Nate Saint—quickly followed. All three books encouraged the sense of calling that led waves of young people into full-time Christian work, on the mission field or at home.

This chapter introduces two women and two closely affiliated organizations that would play a significant role in missionary contact with the Waorani. The women were a missionary, Rachel Saint (sister of slain pilot Nate Saint), and Dayomæ, a young Wao woman who was Rachel Saint’s language helper. The two organizations were the Wycliffe Bible Translators, a group raising funds and recruiting personnel to translate the Bible into the languages of tribal peoples, and the Summer Institute of Linguistics, which supervised the work of linguists and Bible translators recruited by WBT abroad. Both groups were founded by W. Cameron Townsend, a controversial religious entrepreneur committed to Bible translation as key to successful missionary work. In 1957 Rachel Saint and Dayumæ were introduced to American audiences through an appearance on the television program This Is Your Life. A second version of the “auca epic” began to emerge.

The epilogue provides an update on the Waorani and missionaries from about 1995 to 2015. For most of this time, Steve Saint, Nate Saint’s older son, was the face of American evangelical involvement. Saint criticized a dependence on missionaries that he said was destroying the Wao church. With Mart Green and others, Saint used a film, The End of the Spear, to introduce a new generation of Americans to the Ecuador missionary martyr narrative. In Ecuador, young Waorani juggled ethnic identity and the pressures of modern life. The failure of the Yasuní-ITT Initiative jeopardized the biodiversity of Wao lands. The Wao political organization, renamed Waorani Nationality of Amazonian Ecuador, struggled for legitimacy. Never more than 20 to 25 percent of the population were professing Christians as young Waorani struggled to find the meaning of faith for themselves. The long-term future remains uncertain.

When U.S. President George W. Bush first met Russian president Vladimir Putin, he praised him as “an honest, straightforward man who loves his country.” Bush indicated that, more than a decade after the Cold War ended, it was “time to move beyond suspicion and towards straight talk.” Thereafter, both presidents established a good working relationship based, in part, on candor and frankness. Putin’s speech at the Munich security conference did not please his hosts, but it had the virtue of clarifying important differences. Similarly, his speech to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO)–Russia Council meeting in Bucharest was forthright and blunt. The compromise language of the Bucharest Declaration—Georgia and Ukraine “will become members of NATO”—was a personal rebuke to the Russian leader, for he had made it clear that NATO expansion to these countries was a “red line” for Russia. Two years earlier Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov warned publicly that Georgia and Ukraine joining NATO could lead to “a collossal shift in global geopolitics.” But those promoting NATO membership for both believed the Russian position amounted to anachronistic sphere-of-influence thinking, and they were determined to prevent what they described as a “Russian veto” on NATO expansion. Putin’s remarks on Georgia in Bucharest—discussed in chapter 4—attracted few headlines. His alleged comments on Ukraine, however, were viewed with alarm at the time by some and considered ominously prophetic by many after 2008, and especially so in the spring of 2014. According to an unnamed NATO country official, an irate Putin turned to Bush and said: “George, you do realize that Ukraine is not even a state. What is Ukraine? Part of its territory is Eastern Europe but the greater part is a gift from us!” Putin reportedly then indicated that should Ukraine join NATO, the state may cease to exist. Russia would then tear off Crimea and eastern Ukraine from the rest of the country. Six years later it appeared Russia was doing precisely this.

Abstract:
Both the OSCE and the EU got involved in the management of the Georgian-South Ossetian conflict considering it as a testing ground for their capacities to act as security actors and easier to deal with in comparison with the other unsolved confrontations in the Post-Soviet area. By this way, they disregarded the root causes of the conflict and then proved unable to deploy the necessary resources to respond to the security expectations of the two sides, especially since the regional geopolitical environment switched from cooperation to confrontation between Russia and an expanding NATO presence. Following the 2008 War, the EU is left as the only mediating player on the ground but is not recognised as such by the SO side supported by Russia while Georgia has thwarted the possibilities of conflict resolution adopting a punitive ‘Occupied Territories’ narrative.

Throughout his career Nat Cole was always eager to try new things; even when he had perfected the King Cole Trio into one of the greatest jazz ensembles of all time, he was never content to let anything become formulaic. He got an indication of where his future would lie with his enormous unprecedented success with two new ballads, “For Sentimental Reasons” and “The Christmas Song.” He also made his formal concert hall debut at this time, in theaters and also classical music venues, including Carnegie Hall. By the end of 1947, changes in both his professional and personal lives meant that his first wife, Nadine Robinson, and his musical partner, Oscar Moore, were out of his life.
