Dantis, Trudy Mary. "Journeying with God: spirituality and participation in faith related activities among Catholic youth in Whangarei : a thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Philosophy in Social Work in the Social Policy and Social Work Programme, School of Health and Social Services at Massey University." Massey University, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10179/1036.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the spirituality and participation in faith-based activities of young Catholics in Whangarei, New Zealand. Six youth aged 16-17 years have shared their experiences in several areas of Catholicism such as religious attendance, Catholic identity and Catholic faith, morals and values, peer group socialisation and religious commitment. Using a qualitative mixed-methodological approach with the underlying philosophical stance of interpretivism, the intent of the study is to discover ways in which these young Catholics integrate their faith into their daily lives and make meaning out of it. It also compares the religious beliefs and values of Catholic youth in Whangarei to those reported worldwide. The findings reveal many similar themes to those from international studies. Although all of the participants in this study possessed a distinct sense of ‘spirituality’ and being ‘Catholic’ was a very important part of their identity, not all of them seemed to consider it practical to live out their Catholic beliefs. Similarly, although they did not face any insurmountable challenges in practicing their faith in daily life, only a few of them had strong convictions about their faith and, like their peers in other countries, only a few could concretely list the core Catholic beliefs. Concepts of moralistic therapeutic deism were found to affect half the participants while nuances of moralistic relativism were also prevalent. Results also showed a growing disinterest in attending Mass, participating in the sacrament of Confession, leading an active prayer life, being a part of church youth activities and some difficulty in finding similar peer group support. Overall, the findings presented in this thesis suggested that the participants involved in the study could be separated into two groups on the basis of their differing spiritual levels and commitment to the Catholic faith The findings suggest a need for Catholic youth in Whangarei to be supported in their spiritual development in order to help them grow in their Catholic faith. Accordingly, the main recommendations are for community-based services such as providing a variety of youth programmes/groups to engage young people and finding ways to facilitate the secure engagement of youth in a dialogue about their faith and religion, in order to spiritually encourage, nourish and sustain them at whatever stage they might be at.

RIU, EMMANUELE. "Dante, Pietro Lombardo e le "Sententiae". Un dibattito intorno a natura, peccato originale, grazia, libertà e predestinazione nella "Commedia"." Doctoral thesis, Università degli studi di Genova, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/11567/1006856.

Full text
Abstract:

Ulugia-Veukiso, Analosa. "What's God got to do with sex? : exploring the relationship between patterns of spiritual engagement and the sexual health activities of Samoan youth : a thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Masters in Public Policy at Massey University, Auckland, New Zealand." 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10179/783.

Full text
Abstract:
What’s God got to do with Sex? Exploring the relationship between Spiritual engagement and the sexual health activities of Samoan youth. Improving the health and social wellbeing of Pacific youth is a key priority for the New Zealand Government. When the Pacific youth population’s sexual health is compared with that of other ethnic groups in New Zealand there are clear disparities. At the same time, spiritual engagement is frequently noted as protecting young people from engaging in health-risk taking behaviours. Objectives: This study determines whether a relationship exists between patterns of spiritual engagement and the sexual health activities of Samoan attending secondary schools in New Zealand. Does going to church or rating spiritual beliefs as important influence the sexual health activities of Samoan youth? Method: This research analyses data from ‘Youth 2000’, a youth health and wellbeing survey conducted in 2001. The survey was conducted with approximately 10,000 New Zealand secondary school students which included 646 Samoan and 5219 New Zealand Europeans. Nine sexual health activities were explored. Data relating to spiritual engagement and the sexual health activities of Samoan and New Zealand European students were extracted from the survey, measured and compared. Results: A significant proportion of Samoan youth have not had sexual intercourse. Just under a third of Samoan students (32.1%) have had sexual intercourse, with the average age of first sexual intercourse around 14 years. Findings reveal that the spiritual engagement variables: church attendance and the importance of spiritual beliefs have mixed influences on the different sexual health activities of Samoan youth. Conclusions: This study reinforces the central importance of spiritual engagement in the lives of many Samoan secondary school students. Government policies and interventions require an understanding of key health behaviours and their related risk and protective factors specific to New Zealand youth.

Marshall, Timothy R. "The death of God in Hegel's philosophy : love, speculation, dialectics, and the unification of absolute extremes." Thesis, 2022. http://hdl.handle.net/1959.7/uws:68099.

Full text
Abstract:
The majority of recent Hegel scholarship on the death of God focuses on issues such as the cultural problems of subjectivity and agnosticism about religion and philosophy that Hegel diagnosed in his day, the reality status of the God who has purportedly died, the notion of tragedy in the death of God, the mutability or plasticity of the God who dies, and other related themes. This thesis takes a different approach to Hegel on the death of God, one which focuses on the unification of opposites as central to Hegel’s account of the death of God, more specifically the unification of the most extreme opposites of God and death in love. I provide a close reading of Hegel’s remarks on love as unification beginning in The Spirit of Christianity and its Fate and ending in Hegel’s final 1831 Lectures on the Philosophy of Religion: Volume III: The Consummate Religion. In-between this early and late work, I situate the remarks on the death of God at the end of Faith and Knowledge and The Phenomenology of Spirit and argue that the unification of opposites found in speculative philosophy and dialectical reason is deeply connected to his notion of love brought out more explicitly in his work which addresses religion more directly. I argue that the death of God for Hegel is the highest and most extreme instance of spirit at the heart of his philosophy, namely the unification of opposites, in which love, speculation, and dialectics all play a role.
