Abstract:
The nature of note-taking is a renewed subject of scholarly inquiry – whether in service of humanistic eloquence, Baconian scientific practice, an aid to memory, or an early stage of writing. Messy notebooks give us access to a range of organisational strategies for managing knowledge, many of them improvisational, many evolving out of older humanistic practices. This chapter analyses the surviving evidence of Nehemiah Wallington’s four decades of devotional note-taking. Wallington exemplifies the godly practices of non-elite, lay cultures, but he does so as both an early adopter and a sustained practitioner. Two elements of his observational method emerge in ‘An Extract of severall passages in my life’: a juxtaposition of organizational schemes – one chronological, the other topical – and a habitual commitment to the bound blank book. Collectively and over time, his books constitute a memory palace – with size and colour of covers and pages operating mnemonically. By attending to such texts, we can also achieve a fuller understanding of early modern reading and writing practices.

Abstract:
This chapter explores the politics of church life among Congregational gathered churches during the English Revolution. In contrast to studies that view gathered church life at this time as too fluid and unsettled to be meaningfully analysed, it outlines the social relations and ecclesiastical structures that shaped the ‘mixed’ church polity of Congregational churches, arguing that these structures defined the corporate and personal experience of their members. In a close analysis of the transactional debate and conflict apparent in two case studies, focusing on the politics of Congregational church life at Norwich and Bury St. Edmunds in the 1640s and 1650s, it concludes that these politics were formative and creative. They determined a church’s beliefs, practices, identity, and communal life in a process best understood as denominational formation. This chapter therefore provides a method for studying religious experience within other institutional churches established both in this period and more generally.

Abstract:
The differences between the ways professional historians understand and practice the discipline of history and how these textbooks do are the focus of this chapter. These curricula proudly differentiate themselves from other histories; they reject them as secular and instead make history a narrative of God’s actions and judgments. They trace God’s successive providential relationships with His chosen people. Faith, they contend, not only allows the historian to discern the godly and the sinful, largely through biblical exegesis, but also to judge the past by the standards of current evangelical and right-wing Christianity and the political and economic policies it promotes. History becomes a means of religious and political proselytization and propaganda. These textbooks differ profoundly in argument, epistemology, method, notion of causation, and use of evidence from the professional practice of history.

Abstract:
Religious exit is a distinct point on the horizon of separatist activity. For religious communities, separation has been a method to protect a religious order that was under assault and a tool to create the material conditions necessary for a spiritual ideal, a godly kingdom on earth, beyond the bounds of a sinful America. This chapter analyzes discourses of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. From its beginning, the Church has faced tremendous pressure to assimilate into and separate from American culture. Brigham Young displayed the Church’s view of secession when he declared in 1845, “When we go from here we dont calculate to go under any government but the government of God.” Over the next century the Church and Utah integrated into America as a distinct religious group and showed that Young’s declaration was premised on a false choice, as they successfully utilized secession to advance integration.

Abstract:
The experiences of Edward Bowles were typical of godly clergy who lived through the mid seventeenth century. A supporter of Parliament’s cause, he was appointed chaplain to a regiment of foot in the early months of the civil war. In the next decade, Bowles ministered at York, where he corresponded with Oliver Cromwell’s spymaster John Thurloe. Despite his support for the Protectorate, Bowles saw the restoration of Charles II as the surest method of reaching a political and religious compromise, and, with it, peace and stability. In the final year of the Commonwealth, he actively mediated discussions between General George Monck and Thomas, Lord Fairfax, who were then preparing to declare for a free parliament at Westminster. Despite his active support for the Restoration, Bowles, with other Presbyterians, suffered exclusion in its immediate aftermath. And yet, dying on the eve of the infamous ‘Black Bartholomew’s Day’ in August 1662, he did not quite live long enough to see the ejection of hundreds of his fellow Nonconformist ministers from their livings....
