Abstract:
This paper proposes that living Seleucid kings were recognized as divine by the royal court before the reign of Antiochus III despite lacking an established centralized ruler cult like their fellow kings, the Ptolemies. Owing to the nature of the surviving evidence, we are forced to rely heavily on numismatics to construct a view of Seleucid royal ideology. Regrettably, it seems that up until now much of the numismatic evidence for the divinity of living Seleucid rulers has not been fully considered. I argue that the evidence from silver coinage produced in the name of the Seleucid kings presents a version of the official image of the reigning king and that images which portray the king as divine reflect central acceptance of the king's divinity. This is clear from the epithets on the coinage of Antiochus IV and his successors, but I will argue that the same principle holds for all earlier Seleucid kings. Thus coinage with divine images of Seleucid kings provided one of the mechanisms through which the royal court transmitted the divine nature of the kings to the population. As we will see, in the case of Antiochus Hierax, local considerations also influenced the numismatic representation of the king. This blurring of boundaries between the local veneration of the king, which has long been accepted as normal civic practice in the Greek city-states and in non-Greek temples, and the royal images of the divine king calls into question the strict division between civic and centralized ruler cults. The reflection of local cults within royal ideology can be seen as a manifestation of a negotiating model of Seleucid power that relied heavily on a dialogue with a wide range of interested groups. This article argues that the inconsistencies in the development of an iconography of divine kingship before the reign of Antiochus IV is a manifestation of the same phenomenon.

Abstract:
Abstract Neo-Assyrian letters are a broad and interesting corpus of data to investigate how ancient Assyrians dealt with the manufacture of statues, the shaping of royal and divine effigies, and the final arrangement of sculptures. This paper aims to analyse the ritual and practical aspects of the making of images in the Neo-Assyrian period with reference to this corpus of letters, which reveals how Assyrian kings, officials and sculptors worked together for this purpose. It explores the role of the personnel involved, the process of the creation, and the final display of statues. Based on the interplay of texts and archaeological data, the study reveals the intense activity of making statues of gods and kings in Assyria, with the administration supervising both projects for new statues and the maintenance of already existing ones.

Abstract:
Paul's speech on the Areopagus represents the most developed narrative portrayal of Paul's missionary preaching to a gentile audience in the New Testament. As such, it provides indispensable data for interpreting the relationship between Paul's Gospel and the religions of the Roman Empire. This study sets out to interpret the political referents of the Areopagus speech by investigating (1) the relationship between the Hellenistic Jewish icon parody and deified political authority; (2) the hybrid media of gods and kings; and (3) the art of safe speech in Greco-Roman antiquity. Put another way, this study interprets the Areopagus speech's attitude toward empire by investigating its strategies of resistance along with its objects of resistance. New Testament Scholars have long noted the influence of the Isaianic icon parody upon the composition of Paul's speech on the Areopagus. The relationship between Paul's idol polemic and the Hellenistic Jewish icon parody, however, remains poorly understood: when the literary culture of early Judaism re-contextualized Isaiah's polemic amid the hybrid iconography of ruler cults, the referent(s) did not remain static or politically innocuous. This study animates the political dimension of the Hellenistic and Roman Jewish icon parodies' allusive objects of resistance through a detailed analysis of the dynamic relationship between gods and kings in the epigraphic record, the peri basileias literature and the system of benefaction underlying visual honors conferred on gods and kings. The integration of gods and kings in shared cult media and anthropomorphic representation placed the Hellenistic and Roman Jewish icon parodies in a new hermeneutical context one that did not critique religion sensu stricto but simultaneously resisted the iconic spectacle underlying the deification of political authority. In order to classify the icon parody as a type of Jewish resistance literature, a correlative concern of this study is to interpret the Hellenistic- and Roman-Jewish icon parodies within the broader contours of Jewish literary resistance movements that sought to polemically and apologetically defend Jewish conceptions of monotheism, monarchy and representation. In contrast to scholars who appeal to synthetic rhetorical devices to discern so-to-speak "antiimperial rhetoric" in the New Testament, this study suggests that Luke's composition of the Areopagus speech reflects a stronger relationship with the Wisdom of Solomon's polemic against gods and kings (Wis 13:1-15:19) than has heretofore been recognized, along with Greco-Roman orators' conviction that critiquing the ruling power with blunt speech (????????) was both unacceptable and artless, especially in contexts where the speaker's safety was in doubt. The conclusion of this study suggests descriptors for the political attitude of the Areopagus speech and presents Paul's polemic against idols as an alter-cultural rather than antiimperial confrontation with the philosophy of religion. This confrontation has implications for gods, kings and benefactors, whose visual honors are incompatible with the worship of the one God incarnated in Israel's crucified Messiah<br>Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2015.<br>tm2016<br>New Testament Studies<br>PhD<br>Unrestricted

Abstract:

Abstract:
Thesis (MDiv (Old and New Testament))--University of Stellenbosch, 2006.<br>One of the challenging questions for the religious people is whether theocracy is still relevant in a pluralistic society like the South African society. In this assignment I argue that theocracy is relevant for all times. It can just change form as the context changes to adapt to new circumstances. To test this assertion, this study concentrates on the study of Old Testament views regarding theocracy in different contexts. This is done by comparing the narratives of kings Saul, David, Solomon and Rehoboam as told by the Deuteronomist and the Chronicler. The focus is on how contextual influences are reflected in their telling of the stories of these kings and thereby also purport a certain form of theocracy befitting their particular contexts. The study then concludes that theocracy is relevant for all times but the change in context should be taken into consideration.

Abstract:
The hubristic behaviour of vain and selfish individuals, who aspire either to compare themselves to the gods or to succeed them to the domination of the Cosmos, provokes a series of atrocious tortures inflicted by the Olympians to men and women, to humans and mythical creatures, to heroes, kings and even to other gods equally. The present PhD study examines the iconography of a variety of types of Divine Punishment in the Greek and Roman art and the occidental painting (15th-19th centuries). It analyses the interaction between the various works of art and the ancient, mediaeval and modern literary sources. It pinpoints the resemblances between the ancient themes and certain biblical or chivalrous episodes. It focuses finally on the influence wielded by the iconography of divine punishment in politics, society and religion, both in Antiquity and in modern times

Perry, Meghan Joy. ""Where Everything Goes to Hell": Stephen King as Literary Naturalist." Thesis, North Dakota State University, 2012. https://hdl.handle.net/10365/26751.

Abstract:
In his bestselling nonfiction book about the horror genre, Danse Macabre, author Stephen King lists among his idols "the great naturalist writer Frank Norris" (336). While King primarily writes horror fiction, he has often noted his indebtedness to early American literary naturalists. As these naturalist writers have been such an influence in King's life and writing, it seems logical to explore whether King himself, in addition to being a horror writer, can also be considered a literary naturalist. By looking at ideas of both early and contemporary American literary naturalism, I explore how a variety of King's works utilize the most central tenets of naturalism, including realism, determinism (biological, environmental, and technological) and the seeming paradox of free will within determined environments. I also look at how King's horror can be compatible with, and even expands on, the definition of traditional literary naturalism.

Abstract:
Doctor of Philosophy<br>Department of History<br>Robert D. Linder<br>In England, 1532‐1649 was an era during which questions about obedience to rulers dominated ethical discussions. Most English people also respected biblical authority for governing certain behaviors. Obedience was central to the monarchy’s survival and the Bible was central to reformation of an English Church laden with medieval accretions. St. Paul’s Epistle to the Romans 13:1‐7 was the most important biblical passage for understanding the Christian’s relationship to civil authority during this period, and interpreters had such high regard for biblical authority that the backing of this passage was crucial to the acceptance of any political theory that involved ideas about obedience or disobedience. Though eisegesis was not out of the question as a technique among these interpreters, societal and political circumstances motivated most exegetes to examine the text more closely than they might have if St. Paul’s meaning had been irrelevant. These conditions led to creative handling of the text that permitted the exegetes to continue to submit to biblical authority while advocating their varied opinions on obedience to civil authority. Some interpreters moved outside the constraints of traditional views of monarchy and obedience to develop a theory that God mediated his call to rulers through those who elected them. Acceptance of this theory finally brought about rejection of divine right monarchy, as symbolized by the execution of Charles I in 1649. By too quickly concluding that these English expositors merely sought biblical justification for their views after the fact, scholars have failed to appreciate how Romans 13 positively shaped Reformation views of the Christian’s relationship to the state. As the title suggests, this study will examine the discernable shift from seeing Romans 13:1‐7 as a text that commands non‐resistance to rulers to one that not only permits disobedience, but requires it. Thus, Romans 13 is not simply an influential political text, but stands as the most important political text of the period under consideration. This dissertation supplies a needed analysis of representative exegesis of Romans 13:1‐7 during this critical period of English history and considers the influence of these expositions on the development of republian ideals.

Abstract:
Motivated by applications such as stock exchanges and spectrum auctions, there is a growing interest in mechanisms for arranging trade in two-sided markets. However, existing mechanisms are either not truthful, do not guarantee an asymptotically-optimal gain-from-trade, rely on a prior on the traders' valuations, or operate in limited settings such as a single type of good. We extend the random-sampling technique used in earlier works to multi-good markets where traders have gross-substitute valuations. We show a prior free, truthful and strongly-budget-balanced mechanism which guarantees near-optimal gain from trade when the market sizes of all goods grow to infinity at a similar rate.

Abstract:
A manufacturer of any kind of product has to be in contrast to competitive to survive on market. A major point to win a customer over is the arrangements of costs. In investment goods industry asset cost are just the tip of the iceberg. Most of their costs accrue by use. Because of that it is important to overview the whole costs of the product life cycle. Product life cycle costs describe the cost of a product over its whole life. This includes all expenses from development, production and use to recycling and refers to manufacturer and customer equally. The majority of costs are determined in the stages of product development. As a manufacturer of complex investment goods (e.g. machine for production) the question of new development investments has to be answered. There are three important dimensions to consider. These dimensions concern the right part of product for improvement, the right kinds of costs and the owner of these costs. In detail they have to decide which part of product should be improved to get the main effect concerning reduction of life cycle costs. But in that case it is also important to know what kinds of costs of the chosen part have to be reduced (for example energy cost, cost for maintenance or repair). The third dimension in case of product life cycle costs aims at the owner of the cost, manufacturer or customer. This is a problem when new developments cause savings on one side but expenses for the other. In that context the best leverage of these combinations is searched for which means that exactly this kind of costs has to be identified, whose savings get the biggest benefit in relation to necessary expenses. This paper presents an approach to address this problem. For the pre-selection of possible functions established methods derived from product development are used in this context. Afterwards a procedure of quantification is presented. Calculation and rating of new defined management ratios provide the biggest leverage in order to reduce the product life cycle costs. This approach represents an instrument for manufacturer’s business of investment goods to make decisions about their future investments in the field of product development.

After that, he moved to the capital with the king, and it is believed that he performed there. According to the legend, Cheoyong, who came in late at night after performing, found that the god of smallpox was with his wife, sang and danced without anger. The god, who saw Cheoyong's behavior, said he would not invade the place where his image was painted, so his portrait later served as an amulet to prevent disease and ghosts. After that, Cheoyong has left somewhere and his dances and songs remained as Cheoyongmu(dance of Cheoyong) and Cheoyongga(song of Cheoyoung), settling down as a Korean folk art. Cheoyong is seen as a sogd performer who escaped from the political turmoil in China when looking at his appearance, his profession, and the situation at the time, which was not familiar to Koreans.

Abstract:
The strategic communication goes beyond the area of public relations and focuses mainly on strategies that create, develop, and control the success of an organization. Strategic communication also includes traditional practices of institutionalized organizational communication to use the messages much more easily when interacting with internal and external stakeholders. Wishing to find a better strategy to programme any internal or external communication, the organizations develop different kinds of strategic plans meant to support the management process, starting with the mission and vision statement and ending with the evaluation of achieved goals. The following example - Integrated Strategic Communication (ISC)- shows the ways the integrated strategic communication can be reached in Romanian organizations.

Abstract:
This paper presents the study of application of a self-made turbine blade pyrometer to measuring rotating turbine blade temperatures in a bed testing aeroengine. The study includes the temperature measuring principle and the pyrometer system; Installation and adjustment of the double ball-floating type configuration optical head which goes through four different high temperature bulkheads; Measurement of three kinds of temperatures (the average blade temperature Ta, the average peak blade temperature Tap, and the maximum peak blade temperature Tmp) for all rotor blades of the turbine first stage. The experimental data analysis reveals that the first attempt of application of this pyrometer is successful. The measurement errors in the temperature range of 550–1200° C are within ±1% of calculated blade temperatures.

Abstract:
Globalization pressures lead companies of the capital-intensive goods industry to follow the example of the automotive industry and develop global platform-based products. One of the most difficult task is to cover all kinds of local standards, laws, and regulations within the platform. Supplementary strong variations in the purchasing power of customers, education of work forces, and availability of technology or mere fashions in local markets have an impact on regional business processes. Thus, undesirable and unplanned redesigns become necessary during the localization of a global product family into its regional markets. Hence, this paper discusses a platform process, which incorporates life cycle and value chain thinking into the product structuring process. This process is supported by a Component Box platform model offering robustness for component re-use and flexibility for local differentiation. Moreover it facilitates the collaborative product development by an enhanced transparency throughout the entire process.

Abstract:
The debate about the “just price” has ancient origin and returns forcefully to the scene when, in the event of crises of various kinds, there is a rapid and significant increase in prices of given goods or services. In this article it is examined the problem of whether price increases of such a nature could, or should, be considered illicit under EU competition law. The central part of the article reviews different theories on what a “just price” should be and focuses on the idea that a price is “just” when it functions as index of relative scarcity in free markets. It is claimed that such a function deserves protection by EU law. Therefore, price adjustments in response to shocks cannot and should not be considered illegal: it is unacceptable to sanction private firms by attributing them the wrong of not having substituted, at their own expense, for the exercise of a public function (that of making sure that price increases do not put at risk solidarity and other constitutional principles).

Abstract:
The Primary Cooling System (PCS) of a research reactor circulates coolant to remove the heat produced in the fuel or irradiation device. The core outlet coolant contains many kinds of radionuclides because it passes the reactor core [1]. As N-16 among them emits a very hard gamma ray, it not only causes radiation damage to some components but also requires very heavy shielding of the primary cooling loop. Since its half-life is 7.13s, its level can be effectively lowered by installing a decay tank including an internal structure to provide a transit time [2]. To ensure that the N-16 activity decreases enough before the coolant leaves the heavily shielded decay tank room, perforated plates are installed inside the decay tank. The perforated plates are designed to disturb and delay the PCS flow. Normally, when a flow from a relative narrow inlet nozzle goes out to an enlarged tank, it becomes a complex turbulent flow inside the tank. In addition, the PCS flow is frequently changed from zero to a normal flow rate owing to the research reactor characteristics. Thus, the integrity of the perforated plate shall be verified with the pump operation and shutdown condition.
