Baynes, Thomas Gordon. "Tennyson and Goethe's Faust." Thesis, University of Bristol, 2014. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.683393.

Full text
Abstract:
The influence of Faust on Tennyson begins around 1824, reaches a remarkable level of intensity in 1833-34, and continues, intermittently, until 1855. This can be demonstrated by drawing attention to the numerous verbal echoes of Goethe's drama - and the close thematic links to it - that are discernible in at least two dozen of Tennyson's poems, including several of the greatest. The 'Introduction' argues that in nineteenth-century Britain, Faust was a central text, which influenced dozens of authors from Shelley to Wilde. However, the widespread perception of Goethe's drama as immoral and irreligious fostered a deep-seated desire to modify or re-interpret it. This twofold response is also broadly characteristic of Tennyson's engagement with Faust, so my six chapters fall into two contrasting groups of three. Chapters One to Three are concerned with the ways in which his deep admiration for Goethe's drama shaped many of his poetic responses to the death of Hallam. Chapter One examines the link in Tennyson's mind between the loss of his friend and the Gretchen tragedy in Faust: Part One. Chapter Two deals with 'Ulysses', which expresses a Faustian need for forward movement. Chapter Three considers the influence on Tennyson of Part Two (most notably, in The Princess). The remaining chapters are concerned with the more negative side of Tennyson's response to Faust. An increasing ambivalence towards Goethe's drama can be detected in his three major poems on religious doubt (which provide the subject of Chapter Four), as well as in some of his Nature poetry (Chapter Five). And in a small group of works about saints and sinners, his attitude towards Faust is overtly antagonistic (Chapter Six). The 'Conclusion' notes that Goethe's drama was a source for at least three of Tennyson's long poems, and that it also left its mark on all four of his earliest dramatic monologues. Faust can be said, therefore, to have exercised a far-reaching influence on Tennyson's achievement.

Ditters, Mareike. "Goethe's Divan - Model for a Multicultural Understanding." Bachelor's thesis, Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna, 2019. http://amslaurea.unibo.it/17443/.

Full text
Abstract:
In the face of strong migration flows and multiculturalism on the one side and Islamic terrorism and neo-fascist populism on the other, a mutual understanding between immigrants and German citizens, regardless of their cultural background is necessary. Who would serve this purpose better than Goethe, the pride and joy of German literature, and his later work the West-East Divan, an archetype of religious tolerance and open-mindedness? This paper deals with the positive and critical representation of Islam in the Divan, with the relationship of Islam and Christianity and the political exploitation of Goethe and his importance for the multicultural discourse in Germany. It becomes clear that Islamic principles can be positive models for the German society and that they are quite similar to the Christian belief. The common representation of Goethe can be a dangerous instrument in the hands of neo-fascism,but his significance for the German identity cannot be ignored but must be used in a positive way. Reading Goethe can be an important step toward more contemporary German migration literature.

Mehdizadeh, Hossein. "Mystical motifs in Goethe's "West-ostlicher Divan"." Thesis, McGill University, 2014. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=123034.

Full text
Abstract:
A major problematic concerning Goethe's West-östlicher Divan is the possibility of a mystical interpretation of this cycle of poetry. Opinions regarding this issue range over a wide spectrum, covering the extremes of a total rejection of such an interpretation and a thoroughly Christological/Christian reading. In this work, we will re-examine the question of mysticism in the Divan and argue that a mystical reading of it is indeed possible, provided that the exact coordinates of this mysticism are explicated and demonstrated as operative in the composition of the cycle. Our interpretive/hermeneutic framework will be based on the speculative metaphysics of two Islamic mystics/philosophers, Muhieddin Ibn 'Arabi and Shahabeddin Suhravardi. We will attempt to show that this framework not only helps us overcome the seemingly irreconcilable worldly/mystical dichotomy in the interpretation of the Divan, it will also offer us new insights regarding the symbolic meaning of each individual text in question as well as the internal unity of the entire cycle. After an exposition of the main problematic, a review of the relevant background and sources of inspiration in the composition of the Divan, and a summary of the basic tenets of the type of mysticism - called in this work speculative mysticism or Oriental theosophy interchangeably - which we will apply as our basic hermeneutics, we will interpret one representative poem of the Divan in each chapter of this work from the perspective of this speculative system. We will thus demonstrate a one-to-one correspondence between a set of crucial elements in the poems of the Divan and a constellation of fundamental ideas and notions in speculative mysticism of the two above-mentioned mystics. We will thereby argue not for a direct influence of the schools of thought of those thinkers on Goethe and on the Divan, but for a commonality of mystical vision that overcomes a vast historical, geographical and cultural distance. This will finally lead us to consider the West-östlicher Divan as an example of the genuine cultural and spiritual dialogue between the Orient and the Occident.<br>Ce qui rend le West-östlicher Divan de Goethe problématique est le potentiel d'accorder à ce cycle de poèmes une interprétation mystique.

Muller, Peter Max. "The Bauhaus and Weimar : rereading Goethe's Faust." Virtual Press, 1993. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/864944.

Full text
Abstract:
The addition to the College of Architecture and Design Weimar, the former Bauhaus Weimar, consolidates the two existing buildings designed by Henry van de Velde into a new complex with 40,000 sf of existing building and 100, 000 sf of new structure. The new facility contains a 300 seat auditorium, library, lecture and seminar rooms, administrative offices, cafeteria, photo lab and gallery as well as extended studios and offices.Contrary to the brief of the competition which only requires an addition for the Department of Architecture, the position taken here, proposes an interweaving of the Art and Architecture Departments. The Bauhaus interweaves these two schools in the same way as the definition of art and architecture have come to include each other. The additional structure integrates therefore the idea that the building is used both by architecture and art students.Since the project is for a College of Architecture and Art, I believe the new College of Art and Architecture must confront the challenges of current thinking; the search for a new integration of concept and form it must move over the deconstructive approach by achieving a complexity not as a contradiction but as an acceptance of the duality of existence. This interelationship is represented in the famous play "Faust". Written by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe who spent almost 60 years (and most of them in Weimar) working on this piece, the play raises diverse and contradictory questions: 1. of knowledge, 2. of identity and 3. of morality in terms that reflect the 'doubleness' of all beings in nature. Faust becomes important when we recognize the memory of such themes in Weimar. The pieces, and hence, the structure of the play are not composed as a narrative but as an dialogue of different stories. The development of the design parallels the play in which the play becomes the concept and the concept becomes the play; several events - each centered on one major event- provide the scenes for the building.<br>Department of Architecture

Abstract:
Robert Schumann's dramatic music remains, for the most part, undiscovered and therefore performed infrequently. Genoveva, Das Paradies und die Peri, Manfred, and Scenen aus Goethes Faust are comprised of some of Schumann's most beautiful music from his last stylistic period. Schumann envisioned a national German opera that had a complete union of text and music and a plot based upon the supernatural and mythical German legends. His lofty aspiration was to raise the dramatic music of his time to the high standards of the literary culture. Composing dramatic music for Goethe's Faust was a challenging endeavor for Schumann. Scenen aus Goethes Faust was a project that he struggled with from 1844-1853 because of both the text and the grand scale of the piece. One purpose of an analysis of the structure and content of Schumann's Scenen aus Goethes Faust and Goethe's poetry is to facilitate the solo vocal performer's interpretation. Utilizing selected scenes from Scenen aus Goethes Faust; "Scene im Garten" from Part I, "Sonnenaufgang," and "Mitternacht" from Part II and "Hier ist die Aussicht frei" from Part III, this research paper will define important recurring musical motives, assess Schumann's usage of contrasting vocal genres and their relationship to the unfolding drama, explore important vocal performance issues for the baritone and soprano soloists and investigate the manner in which Schumann uses the orchestra to depict and communicate the meaning of Goethe's text. Schumann's method of setting Goethe's text will also be examined, as the ability to comprehend the poetic text was of primary importance.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the development of an anorexic discourse in Goethe's Die Wahlverwandtschaften. Chapter 1 investigates anorexia as a cultural signifier and its relationship to non-clinical and non-medical disciplines. I then submit that female self-starvation serves a structural and a thematic function in WV. In Chapter 2, I argue that Ottilie's arrested female development illustrates the central, concept (elective affinities) of the novel. Chapter 3 examines food as a non-verbal system of communication in the narrative. Here, I demonstrate that Ottilie's eating disorder denies her subjectivity while it signifies and affirms the dominant social institutions depicted in the novel. Chapter 4 examines Ottilie's oscillation between corporeality and bodilessness. Her physicality is always associated with instability. The disappearance of her flesh allows for the passive reflection of masculine identity. In Chapter 5, I analyze the representation of Otttilie's death and demonstrate that her corpse allegorizes the construction of subjectivity in the narrative. In closing, I argue that Ottilie is an empty signifier in the novel, onto which the plot is imposed. Her anorexia functions as a sign for the process of narration and is a condition of the novel itself.

Abstract:
In Anbetracht globaler ökologischer Krisen und regionaler Konflikte besitzt die Thematik von Goethes Faust und Alexander von Humboldt eine erstaunliche Aktualität.<br>In the article “Identity and difference between Goethes Faust and Alexander von Humboldt” the issue of how much Faust is contained in Humboldt and in which way Goethes Faust has to be related to Alexander von Humboldt is discussed. Here the connection of activity, knowledge and vision as well as the relationship between humans and nature are central to the examination. Goethe and Humboldt were greatly influenced by the enlightenment. Their ideas and visions show us today that modernity is an incomplete project. In Goethes Faust the question of the essence of mankind is posed because there is a hint of Faust and Mephisto in each human. With Humboldt those principles acted among other things as a driving force for greater productitivity and the extraction of knowledge. Even though Faust did not fail in his bet with Mephisto, on the other hand he also did not win. Humboldt, however, would have won the bet. Considering the global ecological crisis and regional conflicts today the idea of the relation of Goethe´s Faust and Humboldt has an astonishing relevance.

Aljumily, Refat. "The anonymous 1821 translation of Goethe's Faust : a cluster analytic approach." Thesis, University of Newcastle upon Tyne, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10443/3158.

Full text
Abstract:
This study tests the hypothesis proposed by Frederick Burwick and James McKusick in 2007 that Samuel Taylor Coleridge was the author of the anonymous translation of Goethe's Faust published by Thomas Boosey in 1821. The approach to hypothesis testing is stylometric. Specifically, function word usage is selected as the stylometric criterion, and 80 function words are used to define a 73-dimensional function word frequency profile vector for each text in the corpus of Coleridge's literary works and for a selection of works by a range of contemporary English authors. Each profile vector is a point in 80- dimensional vector space, and cluster analytic methods are used to determine the distribution of profile vectors in the space. If the hypothesis being tested is valid, then the profile for the 1821 translation should be closer in the space to works known to be by Coleridge than to works by the other authors. The cluster analytic results show, however, that this is not the case, and the conclusion is that the Burwick and McKusick hypothesis is falsified relative to the stylometric criterion and analytic methodology used.

Abstract:
Around two hundred years ago Goethe made the statement: ‘Let us not seek for something behind the phenomena – they themselves are the theory’. This would appear to be the antithesis of the claim of certain contemporary schools of epistemological thought, that a ‘theory’ is a construction of the human mind. Yet Goethe’s scientific aims are resonant with a present day ecological need: to find a form of ‘nature study’ which springs from a desire to care for things rather than merely to explain them, which can help to create a harmony between human and non-human nature. Goethe’s approach is phenomenological in that it seeks to uncover things ‘on their own terms’; it is integral in that it embraces both art and science. A Goethean methodology is used to study four Australian native plants: Grevillea buxifolia, Scaevola remosissima, Banksia integrifolia and Kunzea ambigua. It is suggested that Goethe’s way of ‘nature study’ fulfils the contemporary need for a participatory knowing which is responsible for the thing being researched, and various possibilities are indicated for further research and application – in the biological sciences and in disciplines such as architecture, landscape design and environmental education.<br>Master of Science (Hons)
