Abstract:
Around two hundred years ago Goethe made the statement: ‘Let us not seek for something behind the phenomena – they themselves are the theory’. This would appear to be the antithesis of the claim of certain contemporary schools of epistemological thought, that a ‘theory’ is a construction of the human mind. Yet Goethe’s scientific aims are resonant with a present day ecological need: to find a form of ‘nature study’ which springs from a desire to care for things rather than merely to explain them, which can help to create a harmony between human and non-human nature. Goethe’s approach is phenom

My thesis explicates and defends what I term an implicit Goetheanism present in the philosophy of Walter Benjamin. It begins by examining Benjamin’s early critique of the Kantian and neo-Kantian concept of experience and argues that a Goethean theory of the primal phenomenon provides the phenomenological model for Benjamin’s radical transformation of the neo-Kantian Idea. I analyse the importance of Goethe’s aesthetics of science for Benjamin’s critical development of Early German Romanticism and suggest that Goethe’s tender empiricism provides the intellectual backdrop to Benjamin’s later mat

Gérard de Nerval's French translations of Goethe's Faust are key works in Franco-German cultural relations, but they have been mythologised; this thesis presents a nuanced view of works that continue to be the principal conveyors in France of arguably the foremost work of German literature. Less well known than his translations, Nerval's own Faustian dramas the Faust fragment ([1827(?)]), Nicolas Flamel (1831), and L'Imagier de Harlem (1851) have received little scholarly attention and yet reveal much about his, and indeed other French, interpretations of Faust. The influence of Faust on Tennyson begins around 1824, reaches a remarkable level of intensity in 1833-34, and continues, intermittently, until 1855. The 'Introduction' argues that in nineteenth-century Britain, Faust was a central text, which influenced dozens of authors from Shelley to Wilde. A major problematic concerning Goethe's West-östlicher Divan is the possibility of a mystical interpretation of this cycle of poetry. In this work, we will re-examine the question of mysticism in the Divan and argue that a mystical reading of it is indeed possible, provided that the exact coordinates of this mysticism are explicated and demonstrated as operative in the composition of the cycle.
