The present research was based on studying and understanding how the young users work on Facebook their daily presentations through the theoretical propositions of Erving Goffman (1959), who inaugurating the microsociological perspective of the action, adopts theatrical metaphors for the understanding of social interactions as those actions that the subjects display to produce a certain vision of themselves that gives certainty and verisimilitude their presentation. The methodology used was an articulation between virtual ethnography and in-depth interviews, in order to contrast the production of information and also contribute to an integrated module that reconciles different epistemological perspectives to improve the previous views on the object of study. It is concluded that the presentation of itself in Facebook keeps similarities with the presentation in the "real life", in which also perform actions that respond to ritualized practices linked to the circumscribed values of society. However, in the online environment there is a greater degree of control of the impressions in front of the others, although the work of itself becomes complex due to the limits between what is public and what is private

Full textPeople with disabilities are excluded from society because of the negative mark of discrediting received by the social environment - for his appearance or his way of being different - that puts out the standard classifying them as being deviant. In everyday school say whether these brands and they reproduce, not encouraging people with disabilities overcome such a stigma. The research aims to examine how stigma built by students with disabilities influence the process of interaction and inclusion school, studying evidence as it develops the process of stigmatization in the light of school everyday thoughts of Erving Goffman. It is used a literature review of the specific theme, based on studies of Erving Goffman together the empirical research based on the ethnographic experienced by the author in his studies of community, is used as strategies for research, interviews with teachers and 3 comments recorded scenes of daily life through school, 2 public schools in Brazil. In chapter.1 we seek to understand the constructs of Goffman mainly through his academic career in chapter.2 the work focused on understanding the social interaction and mainly defined by the author in question as an order of interaction, where people are authors within of a social scene in chapter 3. the research revolves around the end stigma and how this influences the interaction and the advancement of people with disabilities, finally finishes the work in chapter .4 presenting the analysis of records of interviews and scenes of everyday school life. The selected scenes show the actors involved, the scenario, and the plot of the interactions, identifying the strategies of stigma built by students with disabilities, seeking connections with the inclusive policies and the Brazilian schools. First comes the research identifying the school as a means of socialization and creation of knowledge has an important role in this process of change, although often play the social stigma. The school can help in changing the look that excludes, unmasking some of the masks and own social inclusion; their renewal and their stakeholders should value the differences in construction of new knowledge(AU)

Full text”I AM a Soldier” is an analytical examination of the shifting roles enacted by soldiers in the Swedish Armed Forces as a direct result of specific changes caused by the uniform itself. The Swedish Armed Forces is an organization providing a unique workday for its employees, displaying a strong contrast to those employed in civilian professions. Everyday life in the working environment is also markedly different due to the particular dress code: military uniforms. This study is conducted on the basis that the uniform is a part of the shift that happens between different roles. Qualitative interviews were conducted on six subjects, from the lowest-ranking soldiers to squadron leaders. The central questions were; How do you observe the shift that happens when you go to/leave work? How do you experience this shift, and is there a conflict when it happens? The ideas employed come from Erving Goffman’s dramaturgical theory of the theatre. The results demonstrate that the reflection of the shift in roles is varied, and that there is an interesting change when the shift in roles takes place.

Full textThe purpose of the essay is to study how fact is being constructed in situations where there is a big risk to lose face. The theories of Erving Goffman concerning face as well as the dramaturgical perspective are being used, combined with the discourse analytic theory of Jonathan Potter concerning the construction of fact. The latter is also the research method of the study, with the perspective of social constructivism. The research material is three video clips from different TV-shows – two debates and one audition – where there is a marked risk to lose face. The concepts of Potter are being used as codes in the analysis of the transcribed sequences. The result shows that different methods of fact construction can be used in order to save face in face threatening situations. One strategy is to use fact construction in order to integrate the face threatening information in the line. Another strategy is to avoid that which is threatening to ones face. A failure in the construction of fact can lead to face loss.

Full textThe aim with this study is to get a better understanding through an actor’s perspective on how high school teachers create, act and maintain their role as teachers in the classroom. This study is conducted with the use of interaction theories to be able to explain how teachers choose to act in their interactions with students. The study was performed by using a qualitative method with semi structured interviews and with the help of an interview guide. Five high school teachers that work in the same school but teaching in different subjects were interviewed. The empiricism that we collected has been analyzes by using Herbert Blumers symbolic interactionism and Erving Goffmans dramaturgical perspective on individual roles. The result in the study shows that high school teachers are aware of how they want to be perceived by students. They often react in classroom situation without having actively prepared themselves for the interaction with students. The high school teacher’s conduct in their role as teachers is based on their experience and reactions when they occur in the interaction with students in the classroom.

Full textThis study aims to – through a qualitative method – examine the reliability of Geert Hofstede’s theory of cultural dimensions. More specifically, we are interested in Hofstede’s dimension masculinity/femininity (MAS), which for one tries to explain differences regarding the view on sex and gender between different cultures – a more thorough explanation of MAS follows in the initial chapter of this thesis. There have been several prior studies testing the reliability of MAS; using a quantitative method they have compared media content and advertising in two or more countries, and the results have in most cases legitimized MAS and the theory of cultural dimensions (Wiles, Wiles & Tjernlund, 1995; An & Kim, 2007; Stoica, Miller & Ardelea, 2011). In this study we have compared advertising images published in lifestyle magazines in Sweden and the US using a qualitative text/content analysis. Through examining how gender is constructed in advertising images found in magazines from the two countries, we have found that images published in Swedish magazines contain more non-stereotypical portrayals of men and women than those published in American magazines. When we say more, we don’t mean as in a higher frequency, that would take a quantitative method to determine, but there are more unique themes regarding the construction of gender in Swedish advertising images compared to American. Gender theory and stereotypes have been theoretical foundations of this study, and the actual analysis of images has been conducted using feminist gaze analysis together with Goffman’s (1979) classifications of gender portrayal. The results are not unequivocal since we found similarities regarding gender construction in advertising images in the two countries; however, despite the similarities, there is also a noticeable difference in the construction of gender that can be linked to the theoretical foundation in Hofstedes MAS-dimension.

Full textWorks of art remain a problematic object for sociology, yet they nourish the thoughts of sociologists and, in a variable way, the processes of knowledge that these researchers devote to other objects of study. Occasionally, turning the works of art into a precious analyzer of what escapes from gaze of science allows them to examine their own paradigms. In that case, some evoke the possibility of building a fertile epistemological partnership between art and sociology, a partnership whose challenges are opened and methods yet to be explored and questioned in the same movement. This is the path I have chosen to follow, by exploring the way in which the work of Pina Bausch could help me to reread that of Erving Goffman. Goffman's sociology is often associated with the analogies that the author elaborates to analyze face-to-face interactions - the dramaturgic metaphor that he develops in The Presentation of the Self being the best known. As for Pina Bausch, she became famous as a choreographer by experimenting, in her plays, with different kinds of continuities between the ordinary performances of the interactant and the feats one would expect from an actor on stage. I have considered this "dramaturgic amalgam" as a borderline object of Goffman's metaphors, an object able to set these conceptual devices in motion and put them to a test, in an unusual and fruitful way. Based upon three plays of Bausch, Kontakthof, 1980 and Walzer, this analytical experiment enabled me to explore and analyze the complexity of the Goffmanian text and, following this exploration, to defend the possibility of using art as a reading tool for sociology and the sociological writing

Full textAim and purpose of this thesis is to show how a young Swedish blogging professional, engages in displaying multiple identities online, how these constructed identities are perceived by the readers in the commentary field under the blog entries and affects the ongoing writing process. The chosen focus is on a blogger called Kissie. A hermeneutical Close reading method is used. The theoretical framework is based on Erving Goffmans (2000) thoughts on Impression management within his Dramaturgical perspective theory, about the figurative masks we wear in social contexts. Impression management is applied on the digital communication process in the blogsphere, where the blogger Kissie directs the perceiption of the readers on her page Kissies.se, by writing in a certain way. The study centers on the reactions of the blog readers and how they influence the blog entries on Kissies.se. Conclusions show, it is possible for the blogger to handle multiple personas, but they interfere with each other and their occurrence confuses the readers. Results show that the persona Kissie and the creator Alexandra at some points partly morph into each other and both show in the blog entries. A lack of understanding on how to separate the different texts in the blog entries splits up the readers’ and their responses, because of their unsureness of who to associate the text with. The blog posts might be published by the blog identity Kissie, but the feedback goes straight to Alexandra, the creator of the blog and she is the one who gets the criticism. When her tough mask is put aside, it is likely her sensitive self is exposed in the delicate posts which she publishes. This challenges the reader’s ability to identify the personality of the blog identity Kissie with whom they are familiar with and the whole identity construction process. The crucial part in this case, is the blog readers’ feedback; without their interaction, the identity construction and whole blog communication process is destroyed.

Abstract: The entrepreneur's identity is usually studied in order to assign to this person characteristics thought to be desirable to his functions, thus promoting the notion of entrepreneurial profile. Alternative approaches to the identity of this individual are little used and, among them, Goffman's dramaturgical metaphor (1959) can be beneficial, as it relates human action to the representation of socially constructed roles, as the entrepreneur one. This dissertation aims at understanding how the entrepreneur's role constitutes the personal identity, that is, the subject's conception about himself. Dramaturgical metaphor and micro-analysis serve this purpose, being complementary to the proposed qualitative analyses, enabling greater understanding of the latent content, adding the particular nuances of the interactions and selfrepresentations study to the analysis of verbal communication. The results reveal that the understanding of the individual about the role, perceived social expectations for the entrepreneur role and representation in response to these expectations result in the internalization of values and behaviors of this role, constituting the identity of this individual. The results show yet that the individual assumes the entrepreneur's role seeking approval for their venture, to increase self-esteem and the selfaffirmation of his desired identity to the public. Keywords: Personal Identity; entrepreneurship; entrepreneur's role; symbolic interaction; Erving Goffman; dramaturgical metaphor.
