Yet, the continuity of modern Goju-ryu with respect to its katas (forms) and these historical sources has never been established. Therefore, we employed a statistical technique to examine the relationship between the classical katas of modern Goju-ryu. It was reasoned that there would be continuity across all katas of modern Goju-ryu if they indeed came from a similar source. The results were insightful and suggest the possible origins of Goju-ryu katas.

Abstract:
12 Goju-ryu and 24 Kyokushinkai kata (forms) widely practised today were analysed for blocking and counter-offensive techniques. A statistically significant preference was found for blocking in Goju-ryu kata and a significant preference for counter-offensive techniques in Kyokushinkai kata. The kata from both styles were seen as fostering nonviolence in their practitioners, however.

Tradition often seems as though it is a safeguard against change. However, the reality is that a resurgence of nationalism fed an anti-Chinese bias and an effort to assimilate Okinawan culture; both affected karate. With economic hardships in Okinawa and a desire to popularize karate, traditions did change. Some teachers sought ways to preserve traditional Okinawan martial arts within this changing political landscape. But at what cost?
