Abstract:
Colloid displacement lithography is proving to be very effective in the designing of nanometer scale electronic devices. Precise control of the structure of matter at the nanometer scale has brought a revolutionary change in science and technology. The use of these nanometer scale devices ranges from the diagnosis of various diseases to cell repair to ultra strong materials. This research focused on optimizing the conditions for gold colloid particle adsorption for colloid displacement lithography, an expansion on gold colloid particle manipulation techniques using a scanned probe microscope.

Abstract:
This dissertation of master s degree presents the results and discussions related to the synthesis, characterization, and stability of a new colloidal system containing gold nanoparticles (AuNP) dispersed in castor oil. In parallel, the stability of the system against agglomeration, after addition of other organic solvents in the medium was evaluated. In collaboration with the Laboratory of Optics and Materials of the Institute of Physics of the Federal University of Alagoas, the non linear optical properties of the new colloidal system were evaluated. The colloids were synthesized via wet che

Abstract:
This thesis deals with guided self-assembly of gold nanoparticles from their colloidal solutions onto silicon substrates and possible employment of nanoparticles for detection of biomolecules. It was found that by adjustment of solution pH and surface chemistry modification by means of electron beam irradiation it is possible to facilitate nanoparticle deposition to patterns with almost single particle precision. Spectroscopic ellipsometry was then employed in analysis of self-assembled layers of nanoparticles and its combination with a theory of effective medium approximation has proven the a
