There are two general strategies for achieving Open Access (OA) to scholarly communication, the gold road and the green road. The largest and authoritative gold road OA database is the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) indexing all the standard OA journals meeting the DOAJ criteria of inclusion. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the contribution of Indian publications to the global OA movement. The analysis of the present study was done based on a total dataset of 289 research publications of Indian OA journal as imported from the DOAJ database. The findings of the study revea

Open access (OA) is an alternative business model for the publication of scholarly journals. It makes articles freely available to readers on the Internet and covers the costs associated with publication through means other than subscriptions. This article argues that Gold OA, where all of the articles of a journal are available at the time of publication, is a disruptive innovation as defined by business theorist Clayton Christensen. Using methods described by Christensen, we can predict the growth of Gold OA. This analysis suggests that Gold OA could account for 50 percent of the scholarly j

The traditional subscription-based publishing system of scholarly journals is in crisis, and open access has been suggested as an alternative model. However, participants in the traditional publishing system are engaged in a debate on its feasibility as a replacement for subscription-based journals. As the gatekeepers who determine what is published in scholarly journals, editorial boards play an important role in scholarly communication. However, although there are some studies of their role in scholarly publishing no major study has focused on their role in influencing journal access poli

The Open University of Mauritius (OUM) pioneered the design and delivery of a MOOC, ‘Sustainable Development in Business’ in 2019, in collaboration with the Commonwealth of Learning (COL), as part of COL’s strategy for “increasing access to learners on environmental awareness”. This MOOC facilitated access to SDG materials to a global audience where participants would learn from each other: challenges, lessons and good practice. There were two intakes in 2020 and 2021 as the world was battling against Covid-19. With more than 13,000 registered participants in the four runs of the MOOC (May 201

Abstract:

Abstract:
As part of ARL’s Research Library Impact Framework initiative, a team at the University of California (UC) Berkeley Library studied the relationship between faculty’s attitudes toward open access (OA) and their OA publishing practices, including the roles of funding availability and discipline. The project team compared UC Berkeley faculty’s answers to questions related to OA from the 2018 Ithaka S+R Faculty Survey with the faculty’s scholarly output in the Scopus database. The study focused on gold OA articles, which usually require authors to pay article processing charges (APCs) and which a

Abstract:
In 2022/23 Higher Education Progression Partnership (Hepp) piloted a multiple intervention programme (MIP) for learners in Years 8 to 10. Three interventions were delivered, aiming to provide participants with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to make informed decisions about progression to higher education. Evidence suggests that such sustained interventions are more impactful on increasing HE access, as well as enabling Hepp to conduct more robust evaluation. As a pilot study, we were aiming to test any measurable change in outcomes. We aimed for a wide variation in programme configurati

Open Access allows for the online sharing of scholarly work without the barrier of subscription paywalls. Open Access adds value to research, to the economy and to society. The outputs from publicly-funded research should be publicly available to researchers, but also to potential users in education, business, charitable and public sectors, and to the general public. Ensuring unhindered access to publicly funded research enables the University to affirm its place among the global research community by sharing its knowledge for the benefit of society.
