AbstractThis article analyses the implications of the Forced Labour Convention of 1930 on colonial labour policies for road labour carried out under chiefs in the Gold Coast. The British colonial administration implemented a legal application of the convention that allowed the continuation of the existing system of public works. In the Gold Coast, the issue of road labour was most prominent in the North, where chiefs maintained the majority of roads. Indirect rule became crucial in retaining forced labour in compliance with the convention. This article focuses on “hidden strategies” of British

This paper explores the biography of a wagon road located in the First Nations (indigenous) territory of the Stl'atl'imx of the lower Lillooet River Valley in southern British Columbia, Canada. While the road is best known as a route to the Fraser Canyon during the Fraser River Gold Rush of 1858, here I investigate its multiple lives. Adopting themes from symmetrical archaeology, I show that the wagon road was not a passive outcome of colonial action but instead shifted in form and meaning as it interacted with the human and non-human world. Recently, Fourier transform infrared micro-spectroscopy (FTIR) has played a crucial role in the study of heterogeneous reactions in atmospheric chemistry. This includes research on aerosol hygroscopicity, nucleation kinetics, chemical composition analysis of aerosols, and heterogeneous chemical reactions on aerosol particle surfaces. This paper presents a novel approach that introduces a gold mesh during the sampling process, enabling the true spectrum of liquid water to be measured in transmission mode, thereby addressing spectral distortion issues at 3400 cm-1. Although scientific methods are frequently applied in archaeology and are often considered as indispensable, their results do not always agree with archaeological expectations. This can usually be resolved by detailed discussions and by acknowledging the potentials and limitations of the different approaches. To do this it is necessary to accept the competence and experience of each other and, foremost, accept and understand the different methodologies. Here a case is presented, in which such a conundrum could in principle be solved but archaeological arguments are given a priori more weight a

Flying foxes are massing against the darkening sky. These native megabats will find their way to food using their sharp eyes and sense of smell. As I watch, I am reminded of the microbats of another hemisphere. Those blind bats had prompted Thomas Nagel's famous paper, ‘What is it like to be a bat?’

This creature includes the torso of a dressed man with a beribboned crown holding a rhyton-like horn and a coiled fish tail. In recent years, research on highway development in the seasonal frozen region has been progressing. However, research on the evaluation system of green construction for the roads in the seasonal frozen region is still under exploration. China's seasonal frozen region accounts for more than half of its land area, and many roads traverse through it. Given the mutual relationship between highway construction and environmental impacts, it is necessary to set up an evaluation system of green construction for the roads in the seasonally frozen region to avoid more energy waste and environmental dam

Generalization of the obtained materials leads to the conclusion that a significant amount of useful components has been accumulated in the man-made placers of Primorye (south of the Russian Far East), at the same time they pose a considerable threat to the environment. Using the example of the gold mining dumps of the Fadeevsky node, ways to solve this problem are outlined. The essence of the new approach is to implement a scheme of rational environmental management, which allows: 1- to recover precious metals (Au, platinum group elements) and demercurize man-made placers by liquid extraction

In Agenda 2063, the African Union focused on making the use of ocean resources a priority in the new frontier of its blue economy. However, most African countries are still lagging in taking the initial steps of identifying and prioritising blue economy sectors and understanding the risk to sea and ocean health. Many have not developed integrated blue economy strategies and road maps, and this delays the progress and vision for an African blue economy envisaged by Agenda 2063 and 2050 Africa’s Integrated Maritime Strategy. For Africa, however, the blue economy offers greater opportunity beyond

In addition to a well-preserved early Roman gate and road, excavations have uncovered a fourth-century building, a sixth-century Christian basilica, workshops and a late Roman gate. ABSTRACT Wildfires frequently affect the steep hillslopes near El Portal, California (United States), a small community established during the California Gold Rush in the mid-1800s. In addition to the historical significance of El Portal, State Route 140 (SR 140) is a major transportation and economic corridor connecting the San Joaquin Valley to Yosemite National Park (YNP). In 2019, an estimated 4.5 million tourists visited and accessed YNP via SR 140. In the years after wildfires, the burned watersheds produced debris flows during intense rainfall, impacting the El Portal community and moto
