The Björkdal gold deposit is located in the eastern part of the Skellefte district, northern Sweden. Twenty thin sections from four production areas in the open pit and four drifts from the underground mine were analysed for mineral association and grain size distribution of gold. In this dissertation, I have verified that the striking purple color of the intermetallic compound AuAl2, also known as purple gold, originates from surface plasmons (SPs). This contrasts to a previous assumption that this color is due to an interband absorption transition. The existence of SPs was demonstrated by launching them in thin AuAl2 films in the Kretschmann configuration, which enables us to measure the SP dispersion relation. Yafei Wu’s PhD project has explored different ore-forming aspects of a world-class Chinese orogenic gold deposit. The results show that orogenic gold could be sourced from either metamorphism or magmatism. Silica has an important role in gold transport. Gold zoning in pyrite records both fluid conditions and local kinetics. Gold significantly redistributes during pyrite replacement. This research focuses on generating, isolating, and characterizing nanophase gold clusters with diameters below two nanometers. In this size regime, the metal cores exhibit electronic and optical properties very different from those of colloidal and bulk gold, arising from quantum size confinement. The unoccupied molecular orbitals of the cores are known to accept electrons, analogous to a capacitor, but with discrete electrochemical potentials.
