During a visit to Palestine in 1853, A P. Stanley, then canon of Canterbury, sent missives to friends as he went along, describing his reactions to the Holy Land. Goldwin Smith, a fellow at University College Oxford, enthused, ‘You have nothing to do but to piece together your letters, cut off their heads and tails, and the book is done.’ Sinai and Palestine (1856) became his most popular work. When the Prince of Wales decided to visit Palestine in 1862 he asked the canon to accompany him: Stanley had been Regius Professor of Ecclesiastical History at the University of Oxford in the late 1850s

AbstractThe Mormon claim that Joseph Smith discovered ancient golden plates buried in a hillside in upstate New York is too often viewed in simple either/or terms, such that the plates either existed, making Smith the prophet he claimed to be, or did not, making him deceptive or delusional. If we assume that there were no ancient golden plates and at the same that Smith was not a fraud, then the task of historical explanation is more complex. Building on a review of the evidence for the materiality of the plates, the paper uses a series of comparisons — between the golden plates and sacred obj

This study focused on evaluating the nutritional characteristics and in vitro true digestibility of apple pomace derived from three apple cultivars: Golden Delicious, Starking, and Granny Smith (Malus domestica Borkh). These apple cultivars were sourced from the local market in Nigde, Turkiye. Statistical analyses, including one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Duncan's test, were employed to assess variations among the apple pomace samples. Results indicated that, except for in vitro true digestibility, there were no significant variations in the chemical composition and total phenolic ma

The aim of this study was to identify different scenic zones in Golden Gate Highlands National Park. A literature study of the different physical aspects that could assist in the identification of different scenic zones in the park was undertaken. From this, it was possible to identify four major scenic zones namely the zone below the Clarens sandstone formation, the Clarens sandstone formation itself, the area above the Clarens sandstone and the mountain crests. This study further placed a monetary value on the different scenic zones as identified by using different elements from the Tra

Abstract In 1921 Viscount Bryce got a begging letter from Arnold Haultain. Haultain had been for years the amanuensis of Goldwin Smith, Professor of History at Oxford and Cornell, unflinching free trader, liberal publicist on both sides of the Atlantic, and towards the end of his long life a successful speculator in Toronto real estate. When he died he got eight pages in the DNB. Haultain had been left not the property in downtown Toronto, but Smith’s copyrights. This chapter moves back in time through a reading of extant retrospective (post hoc) sources to reconstruct how Smith and his family might have materialized ancient golden plates if we presuppose that (a) there were no actual ancient golden plates, and (b) the ancient plates were real for Smith in some nondelusional sense. Explanations of the gold plates down to the present tend to presuppose an either/or choice: ancient golden plates either existed or they did not. If they existed, then Smith was who he claimed to be. If they did not and Smith knew it, then he must have consciously deceived h

Abstract:
There is increased demand for high quality fruit produced and marketed with reduced chemical inputs to minimize toxic effects on human health and the environment. Granny Smith (GS) apple quality is reduced by two major physiological disorders, superficial scald and bitter pit (BP). These disorders cause great loss to apple growers worldwide. Superficial scald is commonly controlled by chemical treatments, mainly the antioxidant diphenylamine (DPA) and/or the ethylene action inhibitor, 1-methylcyclopropene (1–MCP). Both chemicals are ineffective in controlling bitter pit incidence. We proposed
