Abstract:
In my thesis, I argue "against the grain," asserting that the war over authenticity among first-wave and second-wave-Asian-American writers is in fact a red-herring argument. The diversity within Asian American literature--be it nationalist, multiculturalist, or globalist--is initiated by a subversive kernel borne out of Asian American writers' frustration at the manner in which Asians had, up until now, been portrayed in popular culture. This thesis will pay particular attention to how Chinese American writers, namely Frank Chin and David Henry Hwang, contest the emasculated stereotype of Asian American identity by reclaiming historical agency, demanding representational authenticity, and urging for political equality in their literature. Following a discussion of Charles Taylor's location of the originality of identity in dis/re-covery, this thesis will commence with a Freudian and Benjimanian analysis of history in Chin's Donald Duk (1991) and Hwang's Golden Child (1996). This thesis then examines the role of Chinese literature in the composition of Chinese American literature, especially in Donald Duk, Gunga Din Highway (1995), FOB (1983), and Dance and the Railroad (1983). I ascertain that the similarities/differences yielded between the "ur-myth" of Guan Gong, a general warlord who served under Liu Bei during the Three Kingdoms era, and the Asian American depictions of Guan symbolically indicate Chin and Hwang's political beliefs on how Asian American literature should be interpreted in a post-civil-rights-movement era. To continue exploring the matrix of Asian American identity in a multicultural context, I contend that post-hyphenated identity is a conscientious performance of self by drawing on Chin's The Chickencoop Chinaman (1972) and Hwang's Yellow Face (2009) as examples.

The Dong-Gong-Guan (East Palace Officer) System in (Eastern and Western) Han Dynasties had been immature; however, through the amendments and reinstitution in Wei-Jin Northern and Southern Dynasties, the Dong-Gong System in Tang Dynasty was complete and vast with the function as if a miniature of the Court. In Tang Dynasty, the heir apparent used to be specified without a firm foundation, leading to the repeated establishment and cancellation thereof. The constant political struggles have hereby impacted the afterward development of the Dong-Gong System. The Court in Sung Dynasty inherited the political system in Tang Dynasty, so the central official system resembled that in Tang Dynasty. However, the Court in Sung Dynasty took the Dong-Gong-Guan System in Tang Dynasty as the mirror and learnt from the political intervention of Dong-Gong on politics and pertinent affairs in Tang Dynasty, so the Court adopted the different educational foci and design ideas for heirs apparent and thus abolished the Dong-Gong System used in Tang Dynasty. This paper inquires the educational policies and objectives for heirs apparent in Northern Sung Dynasty at the perspective of imperial succession attitudes to realize the property of the crown prince system in Northern Sung Dynasty and further to discourse the imperial educational ideas, design contents and enforced manners for heirs apparent. The heir apparent accepted Tsong-shue (classical learning) and Tzu-Shan Tang (good quality) education in the childhood for future political succession. Hence, the imperial educational ideas for the heir apparent from classical education and good-quality education to the succession to political powers were handled by the imperial educational officers. First, the educational foci for heirs apparent in Northern Sung Dynasty stressed the Confucius classical books and character education instead of practical political training. Second, the political significance of setup for future political succession is explored by the service engagement of Dong-Gong-Guan (officers) and the source of courtiers. Finally, heirs apparent in Northern Sung Dynasty had been educated in Dong-Gong for an extreme short term since the educational foci stressed non-political training. That is, only few concurrent functional officers / officials aided materially the heir apparent at the moment of setting up the crown prince. At other times, Dong-Gong posts were granted as the awards from the imperial grace and deemed as the official present system for key courtiers to occupy the posts in the Court of which the objectives include the imperial control over courtiers and encouragement and rewards for officers and officials, and the channel for lower courtiers to advance qualification for spreading a road to official career for offspring. This paper expects to present deeper political realization of Dong-Gong-Guan in Northern Sung Dynasty and thus contributes to the institutional history of Northern Sung Dynasty.

Since the development of National Taiwan University in 1928, Gong-Guan, located at the city centre of Taipei, has been regarded as a place with significant cultural disposition and liberal tendency. In the 1990s, the area around National Taiwan University has become a magnate for not-for-profit organizations, independent bookstores and cafes. Such place with charming streetscapes and hybrid cultures has consequently turned into a favorite destination in Taiwan for intellectuals and cultural elites. For a long time, the cultured class has held a special place identity towards Gong Guan. Nevertheless, in 2004, the ‘cultural landscape planning project’ initiated by planning professionals created a new place identification ‘Wing-Raw-Den’ to redefine their own sense of place. It attempts to absorb progressive rhetoric such as ‘public sphere’, ‘heterogeneous space’, ‘resistant site’ and ‘earthly utopia’ to demonstrate their place identity as a whole. As a result, grounded on critical cultural geography, this research tries to problematize such assumed place identity among these groups to discover the multiple layers in the place and identity constructing process with social, spatial and historical aspects. The first part of the thesis initially deals with the plentiful place representations. Through textual analysis, it reviews the varied place meanings defined by different groups through time. Furthermore, it analyses the prevalent place images of ‘resistant site’ and ‘Western-like café society’ by revealing its’ politics of representation. Through such analytical process, it deconstructs how the place is being projected as nostalgia and modern in time and juxtaposed between East and West in space. The latter part of the work focuses on the individual agents and cultural communities who practice their lifestyles in Gong-Guan/Wen-Raw-Den and transformed it to their own relational space. Moreover, this research tries to distinguish the exclusiveness accompany with the identity constructing process, and how the place gradually became a field to perform specific habitus of the cultured class. Subsequently, it poses the problems and risks the prevailing attitude to regard Gong-Guan/Wen-Raw-Den as a multi-cultural and tolerable place may arouse. Finally, I will investigate how the agents’ place identities change with their life process. By examining their acting subject construction projects, we have the chance to comprehend how Gong-Guan/Wen-Raw-Den works as a symbolic place through their journey to pursue an ‘alternative self’, and then being sublated by the agents themselves.

In the Taiwanese folk religion, dang-ki (literally youth diviner) or lingjis (literally spiritual diviner) serves as the spirit medium between gods and humans. Mysterious and mysterious, dang-ki gains certain supernatural powers by means of being possessed by gods. The subject of the present study is the Wu-ji Guanhuang Gong located in Banqiao of New Taipei City, Taiwan. The study investigates shared characteristics of the believers, the belief development and organization system which result from the change of society, and the influence of charity events on believers. In the modern society, dang-ki has transformed into something else. The abbot of Banqiao Wuju Guanhuang Gong, Xinquan Shen, leads his believers to do charity work, which is another way of ego-transcending spiritual practice. With bands bourgeoning in Taiwan, it becomes more and more popular for consumers to go to Live house shows. The paper is focused on the lifestyle of Live house goers in the Gong Guan Area of Taipei. Located in the business district and next to National Taiwan University, Gong Guan area has become the most dynamic place for Live house shows in Taiwan. This paper tends to use the idea of the Creative Milieu to exam the relationship between Gong Guan area and the development of Live house shows. According to Plummer’s Lifestyle theory and K-mean clustering, the research categorizes the consumers in Gong Guan area into four groups: Experiencing BOBO group, Participating LOHAS group, Network OTAKU group and Urban Elite group. The research shows that the lifestyle of Live house goers in the Gong Guan Area of Taipei is diverse. In addition, the area of Gong Guan is the epicenter of creative power. The government should take the factors such as the surroundings, supporting industries and the exchange of human recourses into consideration when executing the international pop music center project. By doing so can it upgrade the development of Taiwan’s pop music industry. Last, Live house not only provides many opportunities for independent bands to perform, but also inspires creativity and increases its possibility of development. When Taiwan bands’ reputation grows internationally, we should take more seriously the development of Live house. With the goal of creating a better performance space for Live house, the paper aims to offer marketing advice for related businesses and to remind the government of paying more respect on Live house industry.

Abstract Taipei is becoming a prosperous and populous city, the traffic problem in Taipei is serious increasingly. We may resolve the bottleneck of traffic problem only to rely on the Mass Transit System which is an important and effective rapid transit system. Nevertheless, the large number of passengers brings the problem of safety, which also challenges the authorities of government. To evacuate the passengers in accidents is the most important issue to be attended and will be discussed in this thesis. There are a series of norm and standards about the fire and smoke control in rapid transit system in Taipei. In the thesis, we use the computational fluid mechanics ( CFX code ) to simulate the flow in the stations, in which the effects of platform doors are considered. According to different fire locations, we can review the standard smoke control currently used by TRTS, and examine whether it is correct and effective or not. We also examine the effects of platform doors based on some smoke control scenarios. We offer methods to resolve disadvantageous cases. “The control of selective opening platform doors” is an example which turns out to be very efficient in terms of smoke evacuation.

Process of local industry development of “Golden Town” in Gong-guan township, Miao-li county was droved by both leisure industry and community empowerment. The community empowerment was led by the local industrialists, they organized the non-profit “association of community empowerment for Golden Town”. In about 2003, the development of the region also reached a peak. However, to 2005, the Provincial Highway No. 72 to have transport service, people who went to scenic areas of Da-hu and Tai-an needed not to pass the region, and the most powerful industrialist quit the association at the same period. This made a great impact on regional business environment, and the community and government tried hard to hope to maintain their livelihood. This study take a empirical research of qualitative analysis, first of all through the literature review. Then I take both in-depth interviews and focus group with community organizations, public departments, local industrialists and academia who understand the community. Finally I make some record of field observations and communication with local people. After all fieldwork, I get the conclusion that development of “golden to, but also the excessive dependence on, to cause a rapid decline. The opportunity of Re-emergence is the public sector resources and restructuring strategy of the association, this has yet to be closer public-private partnerships forming, to become another kind of mechanism of cooperation. To re-create the “Golden-Town” require both public sector and the association jointly cooperation.

The study of the image of a general and a warrior in the novel of "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" Figures studied: ZhuGe Liang and Guan Gong ABSTRACT ZhuGe Liang and Guan Gong were the two characters presented potently in the novel of "Romance of the Three Kingdoms". ZhuGe Liang was highly reputed for his “unprecedented wisdom”, and was regarded as “the most accomplished chancellor ever found in Chinese history". Guan Gong was renowned for his “exceptional integrity”, whose deeds have cast profound influence on Chinese generation after generation. He was respected as “the most impressive general ever found in Chinese history”. The impact of a book on the contemporary is occasional; it would have been rare to find a book, if not some saintly books, that can have lasting influence for thousands of years. It is none other than the classical novel--” Romance of the Three Kingdoms” that can have this particularly attribute of everlasting popularity. ZhuGe Liang was a military and political talent with remarkable capabilities. At 27 years old, he analyzed the overall Chinese political status with the famous "Longzhong Plan". He fought against Cao Wei using the unification strategy with Eastern Wu in the Battle of Red Cliffs, after which, the "Three Kingdoms" was formed. During a southern war, they captured and released seven times General MengHuo of southern China in order to stabilize the situation in southern China. Their military strategies were greatly admired even by their enemy SiMa Yi. In contrast with the official historical records, "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" highlighted more dynamically the outstanding character of ZhuGe Liang as a military strategist.Guan Gong was the benchmark figure as a general in the Three Kingdoms as his fame rose throughout China, Cao Cao in fear of his power, thought of shifting its capital to another place. Guan Gong's well-known righteousness made CaoCao treated him respectfully in Cao's camp. Yet Guan Gong still faithfully tried to look for his lord, LiuBei after riding for thousand miles and went through all kinds of interventions in his path. His righteous and royal character was much more prominently presented in this novel and Chinese opera than in historical records. ZhuGe Liang died in his prime time before he witnessed the victory in wars, and his LongZhong Plan had never been fulfilled. Guan Gong died of its pride in dignity, and was assassinated in Mai City. Both of them were highly acclaimed by generations behind for their royalty to the state of Shu-Han and their lord. It is regretful to see that their visions have never been able to come to fulfillment. The novel is all about the immortal values found in setting good virtuous act, accomplishing ideals and upholding edifying sayings.

Abstract:
According to Mann, the state infrastructure power is "the institutional capacity of a central state, despotic or not, to penetrate its territories and logistically implement decisions." From the perspective of state-building, this paper investigates the change of the state infrastructure power from the Maoist time to the Post-Mao period with the case study of the Industrial and Commercial Administrative Office (ICAO) in Guang Zhou city. The paper illustrates the following three arguments.
First, different from the perspectives which focus on the change of the authoritarian or communist factors in China, the state-building studies give us fresh perspective to outline the change of the state infrastructure power from the Maoist time to the Post-Mao period. In the case study of the ICAO in Guang Zhou city, the state fell short of fiscal revenue to finance the ICAO. The self-supply funding system of the ICAO hindered the formalization of the ICAO and rendered the ICAO to pursue revenue increase, which led to the arbitrary charges of the market management fee and distorted the function of the ICAO. Since 1990s, the state tried to check the ICAO's orientation of pursuing revenue increase by launching reforms to change the funding system of the ICAO and promoting the institution-building of it. Despite the limitation of the reform measures, the state enhanced its agent-monitoring capacity under the circumstance of disappearance of political movement and ideological bindings.
Second, the state-building effort of the rulers, the shortage of the fiscal revenue and the path-dependence are three outstanding factors which influence the change of the state infrastructure power from the Maoist time to the Post-Mao era. In the case of ICAO, the rulers takes efforts to extend their power to penetrate the society and monitor their agents. In order to achieve the objective of market control, the rulers established the ICAO and tried to enhance the agent-monitoring capacity. The shortage of the fiscal revenue baffled the rulers efforts to widely set up ICAO and restricted the formalization of it. Furthermore, the path dependence impacts on the development of the state infrastructure power. When the self-supply funding system of the ICAO was established, new problems and resistance arose from the funding system prevent the rulers to reform it.
Third, the state infrastructure power influences the relationship between the state and society. The state infrastructure power not only shapes how the ICAO deals with different market subjects, it also works on the coping strategies different market subjects take to protect themselves from the investigation and penalty of the ICAO. By taking the social control capacity and agent-monitoring capacity of the state into consideration, we could better understand the interaction between the ICAO and different market subjects.
