Abstract:
IntroductionÉric Satie was a French classical music composer born in May of 1866. He composed several music pieces that did not fit the contemporaneous musical standard once he did not follow the orthodox rules of composition and harmonic expression.ObjectivesTo analyse Erik Satie personality traits and possible psychopathological findings.MethodsA narrative review was performed using Google Scholar database.ResultsHis music, as it occurs in most musical composers, was said to translate his own personality and state of mind at the time. He was described as an eccentric with multiple descriptions demonstrating unstable and explosive personality traits of pride, determination, perfectionism and a hatred for convention that would put him near a Cluster A type of personality.ConclusionsAlthough some authors conclude that Satie could be diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome I believe that his specificities represent more of personality traits than pathological findings.DisclosureNo significant relationships.

Abstract:
The study on scraping the Google Search Engine via the SerpAPI and automatically generating a dataset of the temple name, location of the temple, temple description, the state of India, longitude and latitude coordinates, and distance from the major cities in India is demonstrated. The workload orchestration is controlled by Google Composer in Apache Airflow. Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE) categorizes applications into microservices under each container. The docker image is created in the GKE control plane, API scheduler segments the granular levels of microservices in the DevOps operation of GitHub, Jenkins. YAML provides the configuration of the pod, of GKE carrying multiple containers, of the main type of input for Kubernetes configurations. Python application creates the YAML for GKE configuration data to define the Kubernetes object and the business rule. The Google native artificial intelligence VertexAPI picks the keyword of the temple name and the location of every state in India. The SerpAPI application digitized the Hindu temples in India for the complete project life cycle for requirement gathering, design, development, and deployment in Google Cloud. The search parameters are designed for Google Search Engine for the collection of historians, and architectural details of the Hindu temples in India. The Google Search application uses the Google Compute Engine, Big Query, Google Kubernetes Engine, Cloud Composer, and big data services of Data Fusion, Dataproc, and Dataflow. The solution uses Google cloud services of Web Hosting, Load balancing, Google Storage, and the compute engine performance tuning in Big Query optimization. The Google search results are in JSON format of every state in temple details and a python application parses the facts on the Search API algorithm. The temple images are visualized in Python Application and integrated for the data visualization of Google inbuilt Google Studio.

Abstract:
In the wake of the controversy surrounding the new AI chatbot application, ChatGPT, I wonder how Logie would seek to include this new technology in his work. I ponder this because, throughout the book, Logie presents compelling evidence for why the concepts of invention, composition, and internetworked writing should be embraced and not feared. While some denounce the application and take to social media to disparage the possible negative impact on students, creativity, and composition, ChatGPT, I believe Logie would argue, would be a powerful tool we can implement to become "composers." He believes that through cloud computing services we are now more apt to collaborate, use, remix, and create rhetorical modes that extend far beyond the formulaic argument, therefore we are composers. So, Logie applies the idea of a composer as someone who is a "prosumer" (Toffler). This composer is media literate and transforms traditional rhetorical canons into multimodal compositions such as memes, Google Docs, and digital collages. However, his overarching argument is that internetworked writing tools have democratized writing through that same offering of innovative outlets. His book is arranged in a way that walks the reader through this argument.

Abstract:
In this paper, we have taken a use case in the healthcare domain for the determination of factors for an accurate range of HbA1c in diabetics’ treatment. Google Search Engine Application Program Interface (API), SerpAPI@ is evaluated for the execution of Compute engine in Google cloud. As a service in Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), the Compute Engine gives the accurate value in HbA1c in the work orchestration in Airflow (astronomer) of Apache and Cloud Composer. We have also developed the application layer for every work stream in python and application output is stored in Google Cloud Storage. The accuracy of diabetic range determination is calculated in python as a measure for the healthcare practitioner to provide the right line of treatment for diabetic patients. A python program is developed to connect to the Google Search with a wrapper of SerpAPI in the Google Cloud Scheduler and create the JSON file schema for parameterization of Search Engine API. The results are shared with customers in the healthcare domain. We have also addressed the challenges of diabetic treatment during long-term Covid-19.

Abstract:
The fusion of AI and music making is changing how music is created, as machines can be programmed to create music on their own or with the help of the composer. This paper aims at outlining the history of algorithmic processes in composing music, with a focus on the current AI technologies such as machine learning and deep neural networks. New paradigms in deep learning like recurrent neural networks, generative adversarial networks, and reinforcement learning are explained in coordination with famous AI-generated music platforms like MuseNet by OpenAI, Magenta by Google, and Aiva. Uses include film music composition and game music production to individual music generation and music as medicine. However, because AI in music is still growing, the technology stuns some fundamental ethical questions ranging from creativity, authorship, and emotions. Finally, this paper evaluates the future of AI in music composition, which lies in helping humans enhance music creation beyond the limitations of music thinkers.

Abstract:
Ensuring vehicle security and preventing unauthorized driving are critical in modern transportation. Traditional driver identification methods, such as biometric authentication, require additional hardware and may not adapt well to changing driving behaviors. This study proposes a real-time driver identification system leveraging a Machine Learning Operations (MLOps)-based platform that continuously re-trains a deep learning model using vehicle Controller Area Network (CAN) data. The system collects CAN data, converts them into Markov Transition Field (MTF) images, and classifies drivers using a ResNet-18 model deployed on the Google Cloud Platform (GCP). An automated pipeline utilizing Pub/Sub, GCP Composer, and Vertex AI ensures continuous model updates based on newly uploaded driving data. Our experimental results demonstrate that models trained only on recent data significantly outperform those incorporating historical data, highlighting the necessity of frequent retraining. The intruder detection system effectively identifies unregistered drivers, further enhancing vehicle security. By automating model retraining and deployment, this system provides an adaptive solution that accommodates evolving driving behaviors, reducing reliance on static models. These findings emphasize the importance of real-time data adaptation in driver authentication systems, contributing to enhanced vehicle security and safety.

Abstract:
This book explores the ways to teach the literary works of William Clark Falkner and William Faulkner to ESL (English as a Second Language) students in today’s digital environment. William Faulkner’s great-grandfather, William Clark Falkner, wrote romantic literary works, and William Faulkner critically uses the motifs of his great-grandfather’s works to establish his literary world. Applying Mikhail Bakhtin’s dialogical theory, this book theoretically explains how these two authors imagine the social formations of the American South differently in their literary works. The coined term, social combination—which is defined as the individuals’ mutual effort to have equal relationships for a certain time—is used as a key term to examine how these two authors depict the characters’ personal relationships. William Faulkner employs his characters’ social combination as a resistance against the American South’s romantic illusions that are represented by William Clark Falkner’s literary works. William Faulkner’s historical perspective is beneficial for today’s ESL students, who explore their new egalitarian formations in their digitally expanded world. The last part of this study outlines how an American literary teacher can connect the works of William Clark Falkner and William Faulkner when teaching ESL students by using today’s digital environment. Using three digital platforms—Moodle, WordPress, and Google Drive—a teacher composes egalitarian relationships among class members and inspires students’ autonomous discussion on these two authors’ works. Through these activities, ESL students are expected to comprehend that the literature of the American South is not only the historical development of the foreign region, but the phenomenon that is connected to their own social formations.

Abstract He had started writing songs at seven, and only a year after so urgently declaring his life intentions to Daisy Barber, he set Mother Goose verses to music and composed one act of an opera, The Rose Tree, with a libretto by Annie Sullivan, the family’s well-read cook. At fourteen, he was enrolled in the first class at the newly opened Curtis Institute in Philadelphia. As well as becoming a composer, he turned out to be a good singer and a fine pianist: bis recording, made at twenty-five, of his own setting of Matthew Arnold’s Dover Beach is a classic monument in phonographic history, and the one with Leontyne Price of his Hermit Songs attests to his finely honed skill at the keyboard.

Abstract:
Re-presentation is a critical artistic method for revealing the depresented, i.e. deliberately hidden, strategic origins of a designed visual object. Shifting between two voices, one observational, the other critical speculation, this work attempts to perform a re- presentation of the Google Earth (GE) virtual model of a public park in Greater London. The writing uses Shoshana Zuboff’s dispossession cycle as a framework for understanding the role of networked, surveillant, robotic images in the corporate acquisition and control of human behaviour. The chapter presents traces found within GE, a familiar robotic vision of everyday life, that point to the depresentation, or deliberate obfuscation, of their role as algorithmically composed aesthetic objects in the project of sustaining and extending the power of surveillance capitalists. Examples of aberrations of photogrammetry, as well as particular forms of anecdotal visual information, are at first puzzling, later suspicious. Observations from virtual and physical navigations raise questions around surface, friction, and embodiment that point to the disembodied flows of personal information back to the surveillance capitalism giant Google.

Abstract:
Complex networks are networks whose structure is irregular, complex and which evolves over time and are used in various branches of science and technology, such as in biochemistry, in the study of interactions in quantum field theory, in the study of IT processes, topologies in geographical databases and also on the web, in social networks such as Facebook and Linkedin and in the Google model. The term “complex” itself derives from the Latin cum (together)—plexus (intertwined), “intertwined together”: it highlights that a complex network system is composed of a set of parts connected and “intertwined” in such a way that the result (the effect produced) is different from the sum of the constituent parts. Therefore, the behavior of a complex system cannot be inferred by a simple analysis of the elements that compose it, but it is necessary to carry out a systematic examination of the interactions that are generated between them and the constraints that determine their operation. In this chapter we show how the probability of intersections for the Road Network Analysis (RNA) can be useful. We use a geometric probabilities approach for transportation planning operations. We show the utility of the probability of intersections in the determination of a classification rule for raster conversions in Geographical Information System (GIS) and GRASS GIS.

Dr. Googol should tell you right up front that he can never be certain as to the accuracy of Omar’s tales. During the past 10 years his stories have evolved into highly embellished tales, composed of myth and truth, perhaps more of the former than the latter, depending on his mood. Abstract:
Abstract:
SHORT PAPER. “Under the Bay” is an augmented reality project where anyone can use their cell phone like a microscope and reveal invisibilities in our world and marine life. When they do a series of animated stories between humans and non-humans emerge. Images, sounds, and stories are affected by live data streamed in from sensors located in the largest estuary in North America. Sensors in the Chesapeake Bay relay live pH, oxygen, temperature, etc. (figure 9). Similar to the water itself, color, speed, audio fluctuate with the water and marine life, making “Under the Bay” a data-driven narrative with eight scenes that tell a story of a world beneath the marine surface, and the exciting but frail health of estuaries and oceans worldwide. The two projects discussed here, “Under the Bay” (2022) and “What is the Shape of Water?” (2020), are part of Lisa Moren’s series of cross-species artworks aimed at diminishing human-centered exceptionalism. The collaborations began in 2019 when Lisa was the inaugural Artist-in-Resident at the Institute for Marine and Environmental Technology (IMET). There, she met researcher and marine biologist, Dr. Tsvetan Bachvaroff (Tsetso) and the two immediately shared a like-minded vision to develop a project that exemplified phenomenal exceptionalisms in micro-organisms. In this paper we argue that novel strategies in nature emerge when a complexity of matter is intermingled with conditions of differentiation. We explain and identify differentiation in art and architecture, symbiosis in biology, and the “wobble” in physics as core principles for new forms and creative strategies to emerge. The outcome is focused on the unusual and significant diversification of dinoflagellate microbes in the Chesapeake Bay and oceans worldwide. Tsetso directed the live organisms, science and data analysis for the augmented reality project. Stories are written and told by Lisa, who produced and art directed the animation and AR scenes. The sound score is by electronic composer Dan Deacon. Dr. Marc Olano led the software engineering and development with John Boutsikas, for the AR app in IOS and Google Play.

Abstract:
This paper presents the results of implementing the Flipped Learning Agile (FLA) methodology as a general framework to manage courses and to encourage proactive learning for students in higher education levels. Flipped Learning is used in combination with Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) to encourage the student in the self-learning process. It is proposed the integration of an Agile Methodology that includes the use of Scrum and Kanban methodologies, by means of sprints for task scheduling and using a board for activities status, into a Flipped Learning (FL) environment. The proposed FL environment is composed of applications such as YouTube, Google Classroom, and Google Drive. The Scrum methodology was designed for 4 sprints, each one for a week-long. Before applying the FLA methodology, a Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ) was applied in a group of Electrical Circuits students at the University of Guadalajara. To examine the self-regulated learning process, the performance of the students was analysed before applying the FLA methodology; the same MSLQ was carried out after implementing the FLA methodology. The analyses of the last MSLQ show that the implementation of the FLA methodology, by means of the integration of the Agile methodologies of Scrum and Kanban into a flipped learning environment, encourage the self-learning strategy for higher education level students.

Abstract:
Often we discuss about student's educational needs and wishes. What about teacher's needs and/or wishes in terms of educational system functional rules? Simply the teachers should sometimes use paper and students should always use computers or others devices for the same material or task? We think not. But we estimate they both needs a minimal package of teaching and learning tools for a well-structured learning management system (LMS) that will compose a reliable and decent virtual learning environment. Successfully distance learning imply a well-organized pedagogical approach and, subsequently, a structured learning environment. In this perspective, if we struggle to improve the results, we consider that both teachers’ and students’ perspective must be taken into account. We agree that the students must have all the tools that they need to learn. But for this purpose, the teachers should also have the essential tools for managing the learning process. If we demand why the LMS's are not entirely accepted as good learning environments, a good reasons seems to be even the lack of this minimal technical tools for managing teaching-learning processes. This paper emphasizes the teachers’ experience of the most utilized learning management systems (LMS), in both technical and pedagogical perspective. First, in technical perspective, we focus on the strengths and weakness of some commonly used LMSs: Moodle, Blackboard, Google Drive and Google Scholar, Sakai, Joomla LMS, Wordpress LMS. Second, we struggle about pedagogical demands for an ideal LMS: we outlined some of the most useful tools for teacher as didactic process manager, as they result from a survey on some existing software applications (the most used LMS's). We tried to propose the most necessary tools for teachers and students in order to cover the entire teaching and learning process. Also, we propose an “ideal” LMS, completed with functionalities imposed by the pedagogical and administrative norms.

Abstract:

Abstract:
A 2019 survey conducted by the Associated General Contractors of America, prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, found that construction firms across the country are struggling to fill open positions. Eighty percent of survey respondents indicated they have difficulty filling jobs in occupations that are essential to highway construction. This includes heavy equipment operators, cement masons, and iron workers, among others. This workforce shortage in California will become more problematic as public agencies and their contractors seek to implement projects funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL), also known as the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA). In California there are 1,536 bridges and over 14,220 miles of highway in poor condition. The IIJA will invest $4.9 billion in the state for highway-related infrastructure projects. The research team conducted a literature review of three economic sectors that have faced or are facing similar labor shortage issues. The three sectors are agriculture, technology, and healthcare. Informal interviews were held to help explore and validate findings from the literature. Agriculture labor recruitment strategies offer some potential solutions to similar issues in highway construction because of the cyclical nature of work in each—the agricultural cycle of agricultural crops and the project cycle of construction. Solutions include foreign worker programs, employee referral programs, and improving working conditions. In the technology sector, there has been some success in filling specialized-skill positions with workers who have trained in online, modular skill training provided by large companies such as Google or Microsoft. Leading highway construction firms could form a public partnership to develop and provide similar trainings for the highway construction skills in demand. The healthcare sector has been addressing a shortage of low-skill workers for a longer period of time and offers the broadest potential solutions. There has been some success in finding workers using policies for tuition reimbursement and incentivizing seasoned professionals to become instructors for programs that provide in-demand skills. The hiring checklist for highway construction composed in this report is high-level, so it has broad applicability. The steps were informed by research into the comparative sectors. They offer a hiring process that is proactive to anticipated projects and aims to increase retention and reduce turnover.

Whitaker, Stephen. Rocky intertidal community monitoring at Channel Islands National Park: 2018–19 annual report. National Park Service, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.36967/2299674.

Full text
Abstract:
Channel Islands National Park includes the five northern islands off the coast of southern California (San Miguel, Santa Rosa, Santa Cruz, Anacapa, and Santa Barbara Islands) and the surrounding waters out one nautical mile. There are approximately 176 miles of coastline around the islands, about 80% of which is composed of rock. The diversity and undisturbed nature of the tidepools of this rocky coastline were recognized as special features of the islands in the enabling legislation. To conserve these communities unimpaired for future generations, the National Park Service has been monitoring the rocky intertidal communities at the islands since 1982. Sites were established between 1982 and 1998. Site selection considered visitation, accessibility, presence of representative organisms, wildlife disturbance, and safety. This report summarizes the 2018–2019 sampling year efforts (from November 2018 to April 2019) and findings of the Channel Islands National Park Rocky Intertidal Community Monitoring Program. Specific monitoring objectives are 1) to determine the long-term trends in percent cover of key sessile organisms in the rocky intertidal ecosystem, and 2) to determine population dynamics of black abalone (Haliotis cracherodii), owl limpets (Lottia gigantea), and ochre sea stars (Pisaster ochraceus). Objectives were met by monitoring percent cover of core species in target intertidal zones using photoplots and transects, and by measuring size frequency and abundance of black abalone, owl limpets, and sea stars using fixed plots or timed searches. Twelve key species or assemblages, as well as the substrate, tar, have been monitored twice per year at 21 sites on the five park islands as part of the rocky intertidal community monitoring program. Fixed photoplots were used to monitor the percent cover of thatched and acorn barnacles (Tetraclita rubescens, Balanus glandula/Chthamalus spp., respectively), mussels (Mytilus californianus), rockweeds (Silvetia compressa, and Pelvetiopsis californica (formerly Hesperophycus californicus), turfweed (Endocladia muricata), goose barnacles (Pollicipes polymerus) and tar. Point-intercept transects were used to determine the percent cover of surfgrass (Phyllospadix spp.). Information about size distribution (i.e., “size frequency” data) was collected for owl limpets in circular plots. Size distribution and relative abundance of black abalone and ochre sea stars were determined using timed searches. The maximum number of shorebirds and pinnipeds seen at one time were counted at each site. The number of concession boat visitors to the Anacapa tidepools was collected and reported. All sites were monitored in 2018–2019. This was the third year that we officially reduced our sampling interval from twice per year (spring and fall) to once in order to streamline the program and allow for the implementation of additional protocols. Weather conditions during the site visits were satisfactory, but high wind coupled with strong swell and surge limited or prevented the completion of some of the abalone and sea star searches. The percent cover for most key species or assemblages targeted in the photoplots was highly variable among sites. Mussel (Mytilus californianus) cover remained below average at Anacapa and Santa Barbara Islands. Record or near record low abundances for Mytilus were measured at Middle West Anacapa (Anacapa Island), Harris Point (San Miguel Island), Prisoner’s Harbor (Santa Cruz Island), and Sea Lion Rookery (Santa Barbara Island) sites. The only site that appeared to have above average Mytilus cover was Scorpion Rock on Santa Cruz Island. All other sites had mussel cover near or below the long-term mean. Qualitatively, Mytilus recruitment appeared low at most sites. Both rockweed species, Silvetia compressa and Pelvetiopsis californica (formerly Hesperophycus californicus), continued to decrease markedly in abundance this year at the majority of sites compared to combined averages for previous years. Fossil Reef and Northwest-Talcott on Santa Rosa Island, Sea Lion Rookery on Santa Barbara Island, and South Frenchy’s Cove on Anacapa Island were the only sites that supported Silvetia cover that was near the long-term mean. No sites exhibited above average cover of rockweed. Extremely high levels of recruitment for Silvetia and Pelvetiopsis were documented at many sites. Most sites exhibited marked declines in S. compressa abundances beginning in the early 2000s, with little recovery observed for the rockweed through this year. Barnacle (Chthamalus/Balanus spp.) cover fell below the long-term means at all islands except Anacapa, where barnacle cover was slightly above average. Endocladia muricata abundances remained comparable to the grand mean calculated for previous years at Santa Barbara, Santa Cruz, and Santa Rosa Islands, while cover of the alga decreased slightly below the long-term means at Anacapa and San Miguel Islands. Black abalone (Haliotis cracherodii) abundances at the islands remain less than one percent of 1985 population levels. Zero abalone were found throughout the entire site at Landing Cove on Santa Barbara Island and South Frenchy’s Cove on Anacapa Island. Above average abundances relative to the long-term mean generated from post-1995 data were observed at all but five sites. Juvenile black abalone were seen at all islands except Santa Barbara. Ochre sea star (Pisaster ochraceus) populations crashed in 2014 at all monitoring sites due to Sea Star Wasting Syndrome, an illness characterized by a suite of symptoms that generally result in death. The mortality event was widely considered to be the largest mortality event for marine diseases ever seen. Beginning in June 2013, the disease swiftly and significantly impacted P. ochraceus (among other species of sea stars) populations along the North American Pacific coast from Alaska to Baja California, Mexico. By the beginning of 2014, P. ochraceus abundances had declined by >95% at nearly all Channel Islands long-term intertidal monitoring sites, in addition to numerous other locations along the West Coast. At various times during the past decade, extremely high abundances (~ 500 P. ochraceus) have been observed at multiple sites, and most locations have supported >100 sea stars counted during 30-minute site-wide searches. This year, abundances ranged 0–13 individuals per site with all but one site having fewer than 10 P. ochraceus seen during routine searches. Insufficient numbers of sea stars were seen to accurately estimate the size structure of P. ochraceus populations. Only two juveniles (i.e., <50 mm) were observed at all sites combined. Giant owl limpet densities in 2018–2019 were comparable or slightly above the long-term mean at seven sites. Exceptionally high densities were measured at Northwest-Talcott on Santa Rosa Island, Otter Harbor on San Miguel Island, and Willows Anchorage on Santa Cruz Island. The sizes of L. gigantea this year varied among sites and islands. The smallest L. gigantea were observed at Otter Harbor followed closely by Willows Anchorage and Anacapa Middle West, and the largest were seen at Northwest-Talcott. Temporally, the mean sizes of L. gigantea in 2018–2019 decreased below the long-term mean at each island except Anacapa. Surfgrasses (Phyllospadix spp.) are typically monitored biannually at two sites each on Santa Cruz and Santa Rosa Islands. Beginning in 2015, all transects at each of the monitoring sites were only sampled once per year. At East Point on Santa Rosa Island, the conditions were not conducive to sampling the surfgrass transects, but qualitatively, percent cover of surfgrass appeared to be near 100% on all three transects. Relative to past years, cover of surfgrass increased above the long-term mean at Fraser Cove on Santa Cruz Island, fell slightly below the mean at Trailer on Santa Cruz Island, and remained approximately equivalent to the mean at the two Santa Rosa Island sites. Overall, the abundance and diversity of shorebirds in 2018–2019 at all sites appeared similar to observations made in recent years, with the exception of elevated numbers of brown pelicans (Pelecanus occidentalis) observed at East Point on Santa Rosa Island. Black oystercatchers (Haematopus bachmani) were the most ubiquitous shorebird seen at all sites. Black turnstones (Arenaria melanocephala) were not common relative to past years. Pinniped abundances remained comparable in 2018–2019 to historical counts for all three species that are commonly seen at the islands. Harbor seals (Phoca vitulina) were seen in the vicinity of eight sites this year. As in past years, harbor seals were most abundant at Otter Harbor and Harris Point on San Miguel Island. Elephant seals (Mirounga angustirostris) were seen at six sites during the year, where abundances ranged 1–5 individuals per location. California sea lions (Zalophus californianus) were common at Santa Barbara Island; 117 individuals were observed at Sea Lion Rookery. Sea lion abundances were higher than usual at Harris Point (N = 160) and Otter Harbor (N = 82) on San Miguel Island. Relative to past years, abundances this year were considered average at other locations.
