Abstract:
PurposeThis study tests whether environmental awareness affects firm creation by using Google Trends data and a novel region-level data set from Italy.Design/methodology/approachForward-looking entrepreneurs drive firm creation. The authors hypothesize that more environmentally conscious entrepreneurs will emerge as environmental awareness rises, increasing the number of green and energy firms. The authors test the prediction using Google Trends data and a novel region-level data set from Italy.FindingsThe authors find that not only the number of green and energy-innovative firms but also that of all innovative start-ups increases with rising environmental consciousness. The results imply some “innovation spillover” effects from green sectors to other industries with rising environmental awareness.Originality/valueThe paper hypothesizes that as environmental awareness rises, more environmental-conscious entrepreneurs will emerge, which would increase the number of green and energy firms. Robustness and falsification tests are also offered.

Abstract:
We analyze whether and how internet searching impacts stock price informativeness. Using the 2010 Google withdrawal in China as a quasi-natural experiment, we establish a causal effect between internet searching and stock price informativeness using a difference-in-difference framework. We find that firms with higher Google search volume experience a 10% decrease in stock price informativeness after the Google withdrawal. The negative effect of the Google withdrawal on stock price informativeness is pronounced in firms with more retail investors, larger state-ownership, and poor analysts’ earnings forecasts. Our results suggest that retail investors can benefit from internet searching to collect and process firm-specific information more efficiently.

Abstract:
Firms compete intensely in sponsored search. Their bidding strategies hinge on understanding who competes with whom, how they compete, and how consumers react to competing advertisements. In this context, we investigate how firm competition impacts consumers’ click-through behaviors in search advertising from a strategic group perspective. Using search results from Google and consumers’ clickstream data, we found strong negative externality for competitors within the same strategic group relative to competitors across strategic groups: firms reap fewer click-throughs when an advertisement of another firm from the same strategic group is also displayed in search results, relative to when other displayed advertisers are not from the same group. This indicates that when competitors from the same strategic group are likely to appear in the results of a sponsored search auction, the focal firm would be better off avoiding head-to-head competition in the auction. However, we did not find empirical evidence of such firm behaviors, suggesting myopia or the inability of firms to avoid such competition. We also show that when multiple firms from the same strategic group appear in search results, the closer the focal firm is located to such competing firms, the more click-throughs the firm accrues. This suggests that firms should stay close to their within-group competitors when they compete in the same search auction. Further, our empirical results indicate that firms are indeed doing so. Using another set of data from Google AdWords reports, we show that our findings are also robust to multi-keyword bidding scenarios. These findings represent the first attempt to understand the impact of strategic groups in search advertising and provide interesting implications for advertisers and search engines.

Abstract:
The Triple Helix model of innovation systems is widely diffused. The fundamental idea of the model is that ‘university’ can play an enhanced role in innovation in knowledge-based societies and that the three helices – ‘university’, ‘industry’ and ‘government’ – interact in order to produce innovation and therefore regional and national economic growth. This is, however, only one model among several different systemic approaches for explaining regional differences in innovativeness. While the triple helix model emphasizes the role of the university for regional innovativeness, the other systemic approaches call attention to either industry or government as having the lead role in innovation. Further, the triple helix model is developed and primarily explored from a macro-level perspective and not from a firm-level perspective. Finally, while the theoretical value of triple helix interactions are reasonably confirmed, there are still gaps in the triple helix concept, and the practical value is only just beginning to realize its potential. From a firm-level perspective, the purpose of this article is therefore to test the applicability and practical value of the triple helix model when exploring the formation and growth of firms using the case of Google Inc. Useful when exploring a firm’s formation and growth, the triple helix model forces the exploration to start even before the entrepreneur enters the scene, which provides a more holistic picture of firm formation. The three helices were all found to play important but changing roles in the different phases of firm formation and growth. The Google case contributes further understanding of the nature and historical evolution of interactions between the three helices, thereby filling some gaps in the triple helix concept. The Google case also identifies a number of mechanisms for interaction and the important role of the bridging organizations that connect the helices and contribute to the development of interactions. Finally, the concept of ‘spaces’ proved relevant and useful, although in the perspective of a firm, the concept has a broader meaning and exists on different levels.

Abstract:
Today, Industry 4.0 technologies, such as Big Data analytics and mobile technologies, are forcing firms to seek new ways to create and deliver customer value. We argue that the Android project, one of the most successful open-source digital platforms, reflects a new business model in the age of digital transformation. In the Android community, application developers create and sell applications for the Android operating system provided by the open-source firm (Google), and share the profit with Google. Such an open-source strategy forces the open-source firm to give up the profits from selling the operating system to customers. A firm generally chooses an open-source strategy to increase its user network size. Using the concept of creative intensity, or the speed of idea generation, we offer a new explanation regarding the benefits of an open-source strategy in the age of digital transformation. We investigate how to enhance creative intensity and profit on the open-source digital platform. Our model suggests that an open-source strategy effectively manages the diminishing value of ideas and, thus, facilitates the dynamic capability of an open-source firm.

Abstract:
This study investigates the impact of environmental performance on firm profitability in Vientiane Capital, Lao PDR. Data from 419 firms were collected using an e-questionnaire distributed through a Google form. The results indicate a need to increase awareness and acknowledgment of clean activities among surveyed firms. While there is a positive trend towards energy-saving practices and the provision of designated smoking areas, more efforts are required to encourage the wider adoption of reusable practices and prioritize proper waste management. Regression analysis reveals significant impacts on firm profitability, with firms having regulations for environmentally friendly practices, acknowledging clean activities, providing free space for waste sorting or disposal, and having designated smoking areas experiencing notable increases in profitability. However, the impact of energy-saving policies on profitability is not significant, potentially due to insufficient implementation. The study recommends implementing and enforcing effective energy-saving policies, strengthening eco-friendly regulations, encouraging waste management and recycling practices, and catering to customer preferences to enhance firm financial performance. These measures can contribute to a more sustainable and environmentally responsible business landscape in Vientiane Capital, Lao PDR.

Abstract:
A rapid increase in environmental concerns has prompted firms to engage in green innovation. This study aimed to analyze and synthesize theories that explain the effect of green innovation and financial performance on increasing firm value and financial performance on increasing firm value. This study uses a qualitative approach with the literature review method, which is an approach that examines and synthesizes previous research by selecting relevant literature, conducting analysis and mapping and interpreting literature synthesis. This study examines 25 articles from Google Scholar, Mendeley Search, Emerald insight and Harzing’s Publish or Pherish. This study maps the theoretical basis, other explanatory variables and research results from the previous literature. The underlying theories include the signaling theory and legitimacy theory. The synthesis of the research results shows three types of research results. The first is research which explains that green innovation has a significant positive effect on increasing firm value. Second is the research group which explains that green innovation has a significant positive effect on increasing firm value. The third is the research group which explains that financial performance significantly affects increasing firm value. The contribution of this research provides a conceptual framework that provides direction for future research.

Essa tese busca demonstrar a existência e o lugar que a infoespoliação ocupa nessas dinâmicas de acumulação, tendo como plano empírico-analítico a empresa de internet Google Inc<br>Parallel to the emergence, development and popularization of the internet was the advent of companies, products and services specifically geared to sectors involving information technology. This resulted in the development of new work processes, new consumer markets for material and symbolic goods as well as new forms of capital accumulation. Unlike radio or television, whose operation (from a technical standpoint) involves a single active sender and many passive receivers, the internet demands that the end user actively interact with the mechanisms of communication. Therefore, marketing goods online (whether tangible or intangible) requires these users-consumers-communicators to objectify their intents. This peculiarity, in turn, has given internet companies the ability to know the steps taken by users as they navigate online, extracting from the very act of navigating the internet critical input for capital accumulation: metadata (or information about information). Metadata has been widely used as a monopolistic means of production to serve capital reproduction, an aspect referred to here as info-spoliation. This thesis seeks to demonstrate the existence of infospoliation and the place that info-spoliation occupies in these dynamics of accumulation using the internet company Google Inc. as an empirical-analytical basis

Abstract:
AbstractA relatively small number of global Internet giants—Google, Apple, Facebook, Amazon, Microsoft, and Netflix—have come under intense and ongoing fire for precipitating a twin crisis of journalism and the media, destroying democracy, and centralizing control over the Internet. In response, a new wave of Internet regulation is now in the making in one country after another. This chapter agrees that a forceful response to the platforms is overdue but raises concerns that the case against GAFAM + has become orthodoxy, anchored in cherry-picked evidence and a tendency to see these firms as the cause of all perceived woes. I also argue that while attempts to regulate digital platforms by the standards of broadcasting regulation may be politically expedient, this approach rests on superficial analogies. It also ignores the fact that the media industries have developed in close proximity to the vastly larger telecoms, consumer electronics and banking firms since the mid-nineteenth century. The last sections of this chapter offer four principles of structural and behavioural regulation drawn from this history as guides for a new generation of internet regulation today: structural separation (break-ups), line of business restrictions (firewalls), public obligations and public alternatives.

Abstract:
AbstractTropical forests are being disturbed by deforestation and forest degradation at an unprecedented pace (Hansen et al. in Science 342:850–853, 2013; Bullock et al. in Glob Change Biol 26:2956–2969, 2020). Deforestation completely removes the original forest cover and replaces it with another land cover type, such as pasture or agriculture fields. Generally speaking, forest degradation is a temporary or permanent disturbance, often caused by predatory logging, fires, or forest fragmentation, where the tree loss does not entirely change the land cover type. Forest degradation leads to a more complex environment with a mixture of vegetation, soil, tree trunks and branches, and fire ash. Defining a boundary between deforestation and forest degradation is not straightforward; at the time this chapter was written, there was no universally accepted definition for forest degradation (Aryal et al. in Remote Sens 13:2666, 2021). Furthermore, the signal of forest degradation often disappears within one to two years, making degraded forests spectrally similar to undisturbed forests. Due to these factors, detecting and mapping forest degradation with remotely sensed optical data is more challenging than mapping deforestation.

Abstract:
This article addresses the different levels of pricing strategies for an online knowledge market. Based on the best practice from Google Answers, an online knowledge market is modeled as a marketplace where consumers ask and researchers answer questions to make knowledge transactions. Consumers optimally price their questions to obtain answers, and a firm maintains the online knowledge market by determining the optimal price allocation to researchers. Our study identifies two types of consumers, spin-off and mainstream, based on whether additional utilities will be derived from the market. In addition, we investigate how the firm can use minimal and maximal posting prices to regulate the knowledge market.

Abstract:
Abstract Steve Jobs, the departed co-founder of Apple Computer, returned to the corporation in 1996/7 and led a three-stage redevelopment that culminated in the late 2000s diversification into mobile phones. Apple was in decline when Jobs became CEO in 1997, so he had to finish a cost-cutting turnaround while beginning the redevelopment. The first stage of the redevelopment used both a cultural and a structural transformation. The second stage was an early 2000s diversification into mobile-tech music, specifically the iPod mobile music-player, iTunes software, and the cyberspace iTunes Music Store. The third stage of Apple’s redevelopment was the diversification into mobile phones. With the 2007/8 arrival of the iPhone and cyberspace App Store, Apple had completed its reorienting renewal: the corporation was now a largely mobile-tech firm. The chapter’s final and comparative section examines the Google corporation’s developmental diversification into mobile-phone software, starting with the 2005 acquisition of Android.

Abstract:
Data is the most valuable resource. We have a lot of unstructured data generated by the social media giants Twitter, Facebook, and Google. Unfortunately, analytics on unstructured data cannot be performed. As the availability of the internet became easier, people started using social media platforms as the primary medium for sharing their opinions. Every day, millions of opinions from different parts of the world are posted on Twitter. The primary goal of Twitter is to let people share their opinion with a big audience. So, if the authors can effectively analyse the tweets, valuable information can be gained. Storing these opinions in a structured manner and then using that to analyse people's reactions and perceptions about buying a product or a service is a very vital step for any corporate firm. Sentiment analysis aims to analyse and discover the sentiments behind opinions of various people on different subjects like commercial products, politics, and daily societal issues. This research has developed a model to determine the polarity of a keyword in real time.

Abstract:
One recent quote for the role of CEOs and other C-Suite executives on the innovation of a firm is: "Innovation executives are not expected to be the innovators, but the great ones can facilitate ideation processes effectively to generate great ideas" (Soloman, 2005). This paper explores the role of CEO/Top Executive participation in innovation in modern business. At the turn of the 20th century, there were many great inventors who also became successful businessmen. They founded and played key management roles in firms that created the backbone in the infrastructure and business growth of the country. Thomas Edison (GE), Alexander Graham Bell (AT&amp;T) and the Wright Brothers (Aircraft) are just a few that come to mind. However, as the 20th century wore on, America's big business organizations became more bureaucratic with CEOs and executives leaving entrepreneurship and innovation primarily to their R&amp;D divisions (e.g., Bell Labs and RCA Labs) and to outside organizations that could be acquired if necessary. However, recent trends indicate that this may be changing. This paper looks at today's state of innovation and examines the current role of innovation as it pertains to CEO and Top Executives. This subject of CEO/Executive innovation is approached with a view of: (1) examining if the spirit of innovation is alive at the CEO level; and (2) if it is, determining if today's CEOs/Executives are contributing to innovation in U.S. major firms. A literature review addresses some of the authors and academicians who have contributed current major ideas concerning innovation. Joel Barker is a futurist who has spent his career focusing on paradigm shifts and innovation. A famous MIT professor, Clayton Christensen, was another who developed and documented key ideas in innovation that are now mainstream e.g., the theory of disruptive innovation. Lastly, most graduate books on Business Strategy address innovation in a separate chapter and describe the latest ways that a firm can embrace innovation to be successful. Much insight into this topic was gained by examining a recent Forbes list of Executive Innovators (Forbes 2019). At the top of the Forbes list are found some common names of U.S. CEOs and Executives. Quite a few have recently displayed a healthy penchant toward reaping the benefits of innovation. Included in the list were: Sundar Pichai at Alphabet (Google); Jeff Bezos at Amazon; and Elon Musk at Tesla. Three major recent CEOs who epitomized the best in the successful harnessing of innovation over the past 30 years are also discussed in some detail: Steve Jobs (computers and other related fields), Edward Whitacre (Telecommunications) and E. Hunter Harrison (Railroads). While examining these leading CEO/Executives, deregulation in the United States economy was identified to be a potential important construct that may well have influenced positively the changing role of modern CEOs and top Executives in innovation. It is concluded that all innovation does not necessarily have to be driven by intrapreneurs within a firm or acquired from outside a firm. In fact, CEOs are more active today in driving innovation than at any time since the earliest 20th century. It appears that innovation at the CEO/Executive level has been revived and is far from being defunct!! Future CEO and Top Executive position hires should be examined with innovation in mind. At a minimum criterion for selecting a new CEO or Top Executive needs to include how well they have delivered innovation in their past executive assignments, as well as what ideas they have for generating innovation in their new job. Recommendations are also made as how to further research this topic to provide definitive factors that are driving innovation at the CEO and Executive levels today. Such research on innovation should not be limited to just technological innovations, but needs to be expanded to include innovations in such functional areas of business as marketing, operations, procurement, R&amp;D etc. Lastly, future research could also be undertaken in innovation using techniques such as data analytics. A data-centric technique could be employed which would focus on using machine learning algorithms to identify themes that are driving the recent upsurge in CEO and Executive innovation.

Abstract:
The process of scientific discovery is something like a walk near Freswick Castle. I assume you’ve never been there. (Neither have I, but a friend has.) Freswick Castle stands at the end of Scotland’s northeast end, at the mouth of the Burn of Freswick in the district of Caithness. As of this writing, it is unlisted in Google Maps, and I had to manually scan the coast to find it. Outside the castle is a simple, unlabeled structure that doubles as a biochemical parable. The castle itself is narrow and three stories tall, with orange shingles and gray stone, set on an arc of narrow beach between hills to the north and cliffs to the south. The building is approximately the cruciform shape of a shrunken cathedral, with the rightward wing moved to the top of the structure so it resembles a lowercase f. If you wander the grounds near Freswick Castle, you will discover a stone wall in the wind-blown waves of yellow- green grass, worn but still standing firm like Hadrian’s Wall. From above, it is a period preceding the castle’s f. Let’s approach this as a scientist, with measurement. From the castle side, this structure resembles the circular stump of a roofless tower, eight feet tall and twice that wide. The stones are ancient sand, compacted and weathered, stained different shades of red from iron deposited millions of years ago, but the mortar is new. But inspection is not enough—we should go in. Walk around to the other side, and an opening appears, as shown in Figure 2.1. The structure is not a closed circle, but it is a spiral wall open to the sea, and to you. Inside, a small stone bench invites you to sit. A window slit next to the bench is an eye to the outside. Surrounded by a jigsaw of rocks, you can hear the echo of waves all around and watch the blue-gray sky above. If the spiral’s opening is a mouth, then you are Jonah in the whale. You are both inside and outside at once.

Abstract:
This chapter builds on prior work on the political economy of location-based services to examine the business of mobile maps, asking the following questions: Who controls maps data? What are these data? Where do these data come from? What is their quality? What does it take to build new mobile maps? What are the motivations for wanting to build new maps? And what are the business and revenue models associated with these maps? The focus of this chapter is an examination of the efforts of one of Google’s key rival firms—Apple—and its struggles to build mapping capacity of its own at sufficient quality to be able to lessen (if not entirely break from) its reliance on Google. Apple presents an interesting case in that, as is well known, it is a major player in other areas of the mobile location services ecosystem, yet took industry pundits by surprise when it announced Apple Maps in 2012.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Kurmann, André, Étienne Lalé, and Lien Ta. Measuring Small Business Dynamics and Employment with Private-Sector Real-Time Data. CIRANO, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.54932/xsph3669.

Abstract:
The COVID-19 pandemic has led to an explosion of research using private-sector datasets to measure business dynamics and employment in real-time. Yet questions remain about the representativeness of these datasets and how to distinguish business openings and closings from sample churn – i.e., sample entry of already operating businesses and sample exits of businesses that continue operating. This paper proposes new methods to address these issues and applies them to the case of Homebase, a real-time dataset of mostly small service-sector sector businesses that has been used extensively in the literature to study the effects of the pandemic. We match the Homebase establishment records with information on business activity from Safegraph, Google, and Facebook to assess the representativeness of the data and to estimate the probability of business closings and openings among sample exits and entries. We then exploit the high frequency / geographic detail of the data to study whether small service-sector businesses have been hit harder by the pandemic than larger firms, and the extent to which the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) helped small businesses keep their workforce employed. We find that our real-time estimates of small business dynamics and employment during the pandemic are remarkably representative and closely fit population counterparts from administrative data that have recently become available. Distinguishing business closings and openings from sample churn is critical for these results. We also find that while employment by small businesses contracted more severely in the beginning of the pandemic than employment of larger businesses, it also recovered more strongly thereafter. In turn, our estimates suggests that the rapid rollout of PPP loans significantly mitigated the negative employment effects of the pandemic. Business closings and openings are a key driver for both results, thus underlining the importance of properly correcting for sample churn.

Lazonick, William, and Matt Hopkins. Why the CHIPS Are Down: Stock Buybacks and Subsidies in the U.S. Semiconductor Industry. Institute for New Economic Thinking Working Paper Series, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.36687/inetwp165.

Full text
Abstract:
The Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) is promoting the Creating Helpful Incentives to Produce Semiconductors (CHIPS) for America Act, introduced in Congress in June 2020. An SIA press release describes the bill as “bipartisan legislation that would invest tens of billions of dollars in semiconductor manufacturing incentives and research initiatives over the next 5-10 years to strengthen and sustain American leadership in chip technology, which is essential to our country’s economy and national security.” On June 8, 2021, the Senate approved $52 billion for the CHIPS for America Act, dedicated to supporting the U.S. semiconductor industry over the next decade. As of this writing, the Act awaits approval in the House of Representatives. This paper highlights a curious paradox: Most of the SIA corporate members now lobbying for the CHIPS for America Act have squandered past support that the U.S. semiconductor industry has received from the U.S. government for decades by using their corporate cash to do buybacks to boost their own companies’ stock prices. Among the SIA corporate signatories of the letter to President Biden, the five largest stock repurchasers—Intel, IBM, Qualcomm, Texas Instruments, and Broadcom—did a combined $249 billion in buybacks over the decade 2011-2020, equal to 71 percent of their profits and almost five times the subsidies over the next decade for which the SIA is lobbying. In addition, among the members of the Semiconductors in America Coalition (SIAC), formed specifically in May 2021 to lobby Congress for the passage of the CHIPS for America Act, are Apple, Microsoft, Cisco, and Google. These firms spent a combined $633 billion on buybacks during 2011-2020. That is about 12 times the government subsidies provided under the CHIPS for America Act to support semiconductor fabrication in the United States in the upcoming decade. If the Congress wants to achieve the legislation’s stated purpose of promoting major new investments in semiconductors, it needs to deal with this paradox. It could, for example, require the SIA and SIAC to extract pledges from its member corporations that they will cease doing stock buybacks as open-market repurchases over the next ten years. Such regulation could be a first step in rescinding Securities and Exchange Commission Rule 10b-18, which has since 1982 been a major cause of extreme income inequality and loss of global industrial competitiveness in the United States.
