Abstract:
The 2018 Swedish general election saw the largest collective polling error so far in the twenty-first century. As in most other advanced democracies Swedish pollsters have faced extensive challenges in the form of declining response rates. To deal with this problem a new method based on search query data is proposed. This thesis predicts the Swedish general election using Google Trends data by introducing three models based on the assumption, that during the pre-election period actual voters of one party are searching for that party on Google. The results indicate that a model that exploits information about searches close to the election is in general a good predictor. However, I argue that this has more to do with the underlying weight this model is based on and little to do with Google Trends data. However, more analysis needs to be done before any direct conclusion, about the use of search query data in election prediction, can be drawn.

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to examine how Swedish compound nouns are translated by the machine translation program Google Translate. In order to conclude what main types of mistranslation occur, different texts were first translated by the program; all compound nouns were then listed and analysed, and the mistranslated compound nouns were categorised in accordance with the manner of mistranslation. The study was also working from a hypothesis that the frequency of a compound would affect the chances of getting a correct translation. To test this hypothesis, queries were run in a Swedish corpus to get an estimation of how frequently used the compounds are. The results show that mistranslations could be categorised into four different types, and that the most common types of mistranslation were omitting part of the compound, and translating reoccurring compounds inconsistently. The hypothesis that compounds with high frequency in the corpus would be correctly translated, while compounds with low frequency would be incorrectly translated, could not be conclusively confirmed or refuted. Although there was some indication of a link between frequency and translation accuracy, the connection was not clear enough to claim that there is a correlation.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The English translation of the Swedish compound fönsterbräda into windowsill, or the proper noun Danmark into Denmark makes perfect sense. But how about the compound fossilbränslefri as simply fossil fuel or the name Mälaren as Lake?  All four of these translations have been produced with the help of automatic machine translation. The aim of this paper is to present the expanding field of application of machine translation and some issues related to this type of translation. More specifically, the study has looked at Google Translate as one of the most commonly used machine translation systems online, and how it responds to the two linguistic categories that were selected for this small study: compound nouns and proper nouns. Besides analyzing these categories, two different text types were chosen: general information articles from a local authority website (Stockholm City) and patent texts, both of which belong to the expanding field of application of Google Translate. The results of the study show that in terms of compound nouns, neither of the text types proved to be significantly better suited for machine translation than the other and neither had an error rate below 20 %. Most of the errors related to words being erroneously omitted in the English output and words which were incorrectly translated in relation to context. As for proper nouns, the patent texts contained none and subsequently no error analysis could be made, whereas the general information articles included 76 proper nouns (out of a total word count of 810). The most prominent error related to the Swedish version not being maintained in the English output where it should have been, e.g. translating Abrahamsberg as Abraham rock. The errors in both of the linguistic categories had varying impact on the meaning of the texts, some of which distorted the meaning of the word completely, and some which were of minor importance. This factor, along with the fact that the reader of the text influences how the comprehension level of the text is perceived through their language and subject knowledge, makes it difficult to evaluate the full impact of the various errors. It can, however, be said that patent text could pose as a better option for machine translation than general information articles in relation to proper nouns, as this text type is likely to contain no or very few proper nouns.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to explore the lived experiences of Korean "goose" adolescents who attempt to adjust themselves to academic and social environments in Canada. In this study, Korean goose adolescents are defined as those who come to English-speaking countries for a few years to seek out better learning opportunities; their fathers usually stay in Korea to earn money and provide economic support for their families, whereas the mothers take their children abroad to study (Choi, 2005b). Using an interpretive phenomenological analysis (IPA), the researcher conducted semi-structured and in-depth interviews with four Korean goose adolescents residing in Toronto. Findings revealed that these goose adolescents underwent significant adjustment difficulties. Despite their success in academic areas, they encountered various problems on a social level, due to both English language and cultural differences. However, they sought to develop adjustment strategies by obtaining practical assistance from co-ethnic groups: Korean churches and family members. They also attempted to change themselves into active, open-minded and independent learners. Although they still faced challenges and lacked sufficient support, they showed overall satisfaction with living and studying in Canada.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree Master of Technology: Electrical Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2012
The introduction of the IEC 61850 standard in substations for communication networks and systems by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) in 2003 provided the possibility for communication between devices of different manufacturers. However, the advent of this standard also brought about many challenges associated with it. The challenges introduced by this fairly recent standard of communications in Substation Automation Systems (SAS), and the need for the development of cost effective IEC 61850- compliant devices, motivated the decision of the Centre for Substation and Energy Management Systems within the Electrical Engineering Department of the Cape Peninsula University of Technology to focus on the implementation of the IEC 61850 standard using an embedded hardware platform. The development of an IEC 61850 embedded application requires substantial knowledge in multiple domains such as data networking, software modelling and development of Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs), protection of the electrical system, system simulation and testing methods, etc. Currently knowledge about the implementation of the IEC 61850 standard usually resides with vendors and is not in the public domain. The IEC 61850 standard allows for two groups of communication services between entities within the substation automation system. One group utilizes a client-server model accommodating services such as Reporting and Remote Switching. The second group utilizes a peer-to-peer model for Generic Substation Event (GSE) services associated with time-critical activities such as fast and reliable communication between Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs) used for protection of the power network. The messages associated with the GSE services are the Generic Object Oriented Substation Event (GOOSE) messages. The use of GOOSE messages for protection of the electrical system is very important in modern substations. Detailed knowledge of the structure of these messages is important in instances requiring fault diagnosis to determine the cause of mal– operation or to address interoperability concerns or when developing custom IEC 61850- compliant devices with limited functionality. A practical protection application (overcurrent) case study is presented where GOOSE messages are exchanged between a commercial IED and an IEC 61850-compliant controller based on an embedded platform. The basic data model and software development of an actuator node for a circuit breaker is proposed using an IEC 61850 communication stack on an embedded platform. The performance of the GOOSE messages is confirmed to be as per the functional behaviour specified, and per the IEC 68150 standard in terms of the temporal behaviour required. This thesis document tables the methods, software programs, hardware interfacing and system integration techniques that allow for the development and implementation of a low cost IEC 61850-compliant controller unit on an embedded systems platform for the substation automation system. The overcurrent case study distributed between a commercial IED (SIEMENS Siprotec device) and the actuator application developed on an embedded platform for this project (DK60 board) is in compliance with the IEC 61850 standard and utilizing GOOSE messaging is successfully completed both in terms of functional and temporal behaviour. This novel research work contributes not only to the academic community, but to the international Power Systems community as a whole. Keywords: IEC 61850 standard, IEDs, GOOSE message, software modelling, software development, substation automation systems, communication stack, embedded systems, actuator.

Abstract:
Thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree Master of Technology: Electrical Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology 2014
The IEC 61850 standard, “Communication networks and systems in substations” was promulgated to accommodate the need for a common communication platform within substations for devices from different vendors. The IEC 61850 standard proposes a substation automation architecture that is Ethernet-based, with a “station-bus” for protection devices within the substation and a “process bus” where raw data from the voltage and current transformers are published onto the data network using a device known as a Merging Unit. To date, most of the standardization efforts were focused at the station bus level where event-triggered messages are exchanged between the substation automation devices, commonly referred to as Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs). These messages are known as Generic Object Oriented Substation Event messages. Equipment from vendors to accommodate the “process bus” paradigm, however is still limited at present. The Centre for Substation Automation and Energy Management Systems was established within the Electrical Engineering Department at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology with one of its objectives being the development of equipment either for simulation or real-time purposes in compliance with the IEC 61850 standard. In order to fulfil this long-term objective of the Centre, an in-depth understanding of the IEC 61850 standard is required. This document details the efforts at acquiring the requisite knowledge base in support of the educational objectives of the Centre and the research project implements a simulation of a merging unit which is compliant with the functional behavior as stipulated by the standard. This limited functional implementation (i.e. non-real-time) of the merging unit, is achieved through the development of a virtualized data acquisition node capable of synthetic generation of waveforms, encoding of the data and publishing the data in a format compliant with the IEC 61850-9-2 sampled value message structure. This functional behavior of the virtual sensor node which was implemented has been validated against the behavior of a commercial device and the sampled value message structure is validated against the standard. The temporal behavior of the proposed device is commented upon. This research project forms the basis for future real-time implementation of a merging unit.

Abstract:
What began as simple homepages that listed favorite Web sites in the early 1990’s have grown into some of the most sophisticated, enormous collections of searchable, organized data in history. These Web sites are search engines—the golden gateways to the Internet—and they are used by virtually everyone. Search engines, particularly Google, log and stamp each and every search made by end-users and use that collected data for their own purposes. The data is used for an assortment of business advantages, some which the general population is not privy too, and most of which the casual end-user is typically unfamiliar with. In a world where technology gives users many conveniences, one must weigh the benefits of those conveniences against the potential intrusions of personal privacy. Google’s main stream of revenue is their content-targeted “AdWords” program. AdWords—while not a direct instance of personal privacy breach—marks a growing trend in invading personal space in order to deliver personalized content. Gmail, Google’s free Web-based e-mail service, marked a new evolution in these procedures, scanning personal e-mail messages to deliver targeted advertisements. Google has an appetite for data, and their hundreds of millions of users deliver that every week. With their eyes on moving into radio, television, print, establishing an Internet service provider, furthering yet the technology of AdWords, as well as creating and furthering technology in many other ventures, one must back up and examine the potential privacy and intrusion risks associated with the technological conveniences being provided.

Abstract:
Search engines in general, and Google Scholar in particular, are co-producers of academic knowledge. They have a profound impact on the way knowledge is generated, transmitted, and distributed. This chapter first explores how Google Scholar works as a human-technological system in order to analyze the site's technology in combination with its inscribed usage and its actual use and users. The chapter then scrutinize the complex power relationships of digital networks with Google at its epicenter. Following Manuel Castells's (2009) proposal to “unwire” the construction of academic knowledge through the coded dynamics of search engines, the author examines the larger legal and political-economic implications of the platform's architecture and organized structure. Combining these two layers of analysis should inform an enriched type of information literacy.

Abstract:
Twenty-one grades 6-12 students were interviewed to learn about their experiences participating in a fully synchronous virtual learning environment at a public charter school in California, USA. Students take seven 50-minute classes four days a week and seven 30-minute classes the fifth weekday using the Zoom platform and Google Classroom. One-third of participants were students with disabilities, one-third English language learners, and one-third possessed neither designation. This study identifies several themes regarding the benefits and drawbacks of an entirely synchronous learning experience for secondary students. The participants make recommendations for their general education, special education, and English language development teachers, including strategies to engage secondary students more effectively, assessment suggestions, curriculum design ideas, advice about organizing Google Classrooms in ways that are supportive of student needs, and exhortations about what teachers should not do when planning and implementing synchronous online learning.

Abstract:
Today, the added value of geoinformation for crisis management is well known and accepted. However, experiences show that disaster management units on local administrative levels in the developing world often lack the use of Geographic Information Systems for analysing spatial interrelations and making their own maps. Various studies mention the shortage of financial resources, human capacity, and adequate knowledge as reasons for that. In recent years publically available virtual globes like Google Earth™, Microsoft® Bing™ Maps 3D or Nasa World Wind enjoy great popularity. The accessibility of worldwide high resolution satellite data, their intuitive user interface, and the ability to integrate own data support this success. In this chapter, the potential of these new geospatial technologies for supporting disaster preparedness and response is demonstrated, using the example of Google Earth™. Possibilities for the integration of data layers from third parties, the digitization of own layers, as well as the analytical capacities are examined. Furthermore, a printing module is presented, which supports the production of paper maps based on data previously collected and edited in Google Earth™. The efficiency of the proposed approach is demonstrated for a disaster management scenario in Legazpi, a Philippine city exposed to several natural hazards due to the vicinity to Mayon volcano and the annually occuring typhoons in the region. With this research, current technological trends in geospatial technologies are taken up and investigated on their potential for professional use. Moreover, it is demonstrated that by using freely available software general constraints for using GIS in developing countries can be overcome. Most importantly, the approach presented guarantees low cost for implementation and reproducibility, which is essential for its application in developing countries.

Abstract:
‘Thomas Edison’s organizational genius’ uses examples of Thomas Edison’s work to show how he pioneered a highly structured way of organizing innovation. He developed the phonograph, electric light bulb, and electrical power distribution, and improved the telephone, telegraph, and motion picture technology, as well as founding numerous companies, including General Electric. He always pursued several lines of research, wishing to keep options open until the strongest contender emerged. By working on numerous projects simultaneously, Edison hedged his bets so future income streams did not depend upon one development. Further examples of other businesses using Edison’s ideas on workplace, structures, people, creativity, and technology include IDEO, Toyota, 3M, Google, and Amazon.

Abstract:
In public discussions of social media governance, corporations such as Google, Facebook, and Twitter are often first and foremost seen as providers of information and as media. However, social media companies’ business models aim to generate income by attracting a large, growing, and active user base and by collecting and monetising personal data. This has generated concerns with respect to hate speech, disinformation, and privacy. Over time, there has been a trend away from industry self-regulation towards a strengthening of national-level and European Union-level regulations, that is, from soft to hard law. Hence, moving beyond general corporate governance codes, governments are imposing more targeted regulations that recognise these firms’ profound societal importance and wide-reaching influence. The chapter reviews these developments, highlighting the tension between companies’ commercial and public rationales, critiques the current industry-specific regulatory framework, and raises potential policy alternatives.

Abstract:
In this article we outline our practices for the inclusion of electronic translation devices in specialized French language courses and reflect upon the changing landscape of language teaching. We describe how the use of Google Translate can increase students' awareness of linguistic, stylistic, and cultural differences in our culturally and linguistically diverse clasrooms. Although we characterize our didactic approach as action based, we differenciate our use of this approach from its common use in general language courses and point out the usefulness of intellectualizing it based on our use of Google Translate in work-place-oriented courses. Furthermore, we use our experience with action based approaches and translation devices to answer the following questions: why are students still learning languages; what are the language skills that they are interested in; and what is the role of a teacher in this new world of quasi-magic linguistic tools.

Abstract:
In this work, we present the platform Boca a Boca Virtual, a kind of virtual catalog that aims to help self-employed professionals and small businesses to start their presence in the digital environment, promoting their services and products in a simple and fast way. The idea emerged during the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, especially with social isolation, whose concern, from an economic and social point of view, was to allow autonomous service providers and establishments, in general, to continue offering their products and/or services. Through the platform, a consumer can search for a specific product and service within his own neighborhood and city, strengthening the local economy. In addition, Boca a Boca Virtual is integrated with Google Maps, in such a way that registered developments are also indexed by the Google search engine, improving their visibility and potentially increasing more customers. The platform is fully responsive, combining several recent web development technologies. Today it has more than 140 registered enterprises, from more than 30 Brazilian cities.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This paper presents the results of implementing the Flipped Learning Agile (FLA) methodology as a general framework to manage courses and to encourage proactive learning for students in higher education levels. Flipped Learning is used in combination with Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) to encourage the student in the self-learning process. It is proposed the integration of an Agile Methodology that includes the use of Scrum and Kanban methodologies, by means of sprints for task scheduling and using a board for activities status, into a Flipped Learning (FL) environment. The proposed FL environment is composed of applications such as YouTube, Google Classroom, and Google Drive. The Scrum methodology was designed for 4 sprints, each one for a week-long. Before applying the FLA methodology, a Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ) was applied in a group of Electrical Circuits students at the University of Guadalajara. To examine the self-regulated learning process, the performance of the students was analysed before applying the FLA methodology; the same MSLQ was carried out after implementing the FLA methodology. The analyses of the last MSLQ show that the implementation of the FLA methodology, by means of the integration of the Agile methodologies of Scrum and Kanban into a flipped learning environment, encourage the self-learning strategy for higher education level students.

Abstract:
General purpose automatic speech recognition (gpASR) systems such as Google, Watson, etc. sometimes output inaccurate sentences when used in a domain specific scenario as it may not have had enough training samples for that particular domain and context. Further, the accent of the speaker and the environmental conditions in which the speaker speaks a sentence may influence the speech engine to recognize certain words inaccurately. Many approaches to improve the accuracy of ASR output exist. However, in the context of a domain and the environment in which a speaker speaks the sentences, gpASR output needs a lot of improvement in order to provide effective speech interfaces to domain-specific systems. In this paper, we demonstrate a method that combines bio-inspired artifi- cial development (ArtDev) with machine learning (ML) approaches to repair the output of a gpASR. Our method factors in the environment to tailor the repair process.

Abstract:
The use of Virtual Learning Environments is widespread in most universities and it is also applied to other educational levels, such as Primary and Secondary schools. In fact, environments such as Moodle or Google Classroom are being essential tools to continue academic activities in those countries that, due to the pandemic of Covid-19, have suspended all classes. In these educational platforms, all the activities carried out by each student are registerd and stored in detail. This information can be extracted as raw data or as indicators developed after automated analysis if the platform has the appropriate tools. In this work, the information extracted for the subject of Engineering Thermodynamics from the last 3 academic years in the Degree in Engineering of Industrial Technologies is presented and compared. The results have been used to detect bad practices and study patterns, in order to improve assessment activities in particular and learning outcomes in general.

Abstract:
There are many aspects that influence the importance of a university. Among these, web visibility is taking advantage of available technology, focusing on the benefits of internet and social media. This paper provides an analysis of the Romanian public and private universities websites, using alexa.com, a tool for website traffic analysis. Moreover, the official social media accounts of universities (Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Flickr, YouTube and Instagram) were analysed, collecting several data such as: the number of likes and followers, the number of subscribers and the number of posts. The analysis was performed using ANOVA and Nonparametric Test for the presence via websites and Spearman and Pearson correlation to assess the correlation between social media and website traffic. In general, public universities from Romania have more visibility and a higher number of links to their websites compared to private ones. Based on the fact that Facebook and site content are often related, it should be noted that activity on Facebook may improve website rankings for Romanian universities.

Abstract:
In this article the subject of Informing through user-centered Exploratory Search and Information Retrieval utilizing human-computer interaction strategies is analyzed. Exploratory Search is a new field that has sprung from the more general Information Retrieval. Informing Science is a trans-discipline which transcends a large variety of fields and seeks how to best inform all the clients of interest. One facet of Informing Science, the process of elucidating the best methods of informing inquiring clientele, is served by user-centered Exploratory Search and human-computer interaction strategies. This work explains a human factors method which allows the comparison of the performance of multiple IR systems and can enhance the comparative topic focused IR search quality. This human factors method also allows the human participants to provide their IR explicit feedback and record these judgments as a gold standard for future comparison. This human factors method is tested by established statistical analysis and allows the statistical comparison of the IR performance of a selection of IR systems. This work also demonstrates the results of this human factors method after testing it upon three leading IR systems, Google, Yahoo and Live Search.

Abstract:
Canada geese, snow geese, ducks, and American coots all have been implicated in agricultural crop and turf damage. Generally, goose, duck, and American coot damage to crops, vegetation and aircraft can be difficult to identify. Usually the damage to crops or vegetation shows signs of being clipped, torn, or stripped. Tracks, feces, or feathers found neat the damage can be used to help identify the species. Damage to aircraft is obvious if the bird is recovered, but if not, and only bird parts are recovered, a scientific analysis is required. Canada geese, snow geese, ducks, and American coots are federally protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act (MBTA), which stipulates that, unless permitted by regulation, it is unlawful to “pursue, hunt, take, capture, kill, possess, sell, barter, purchase, ship, export, or import any migratory birds alive or dead, or any part, nests, eggs, or products thereof.” Generally, geese, ducks, and coots can be hazed without a federal permit in order to prevent damage to agriculture crops and property with a variety of scare techniques. In most cases, live ammunition cannot be used.
