Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
This research has analyzed the horizontal positional accuracy of basemaps Bing Maps, Google Maps and ESRIs World Imagery when used as an online spatial reference within a Geographic Information System for the municipality of São Paulo. The methodology was based on criteria defined by Brazil Federal Decree 89817/84 and in the analysis proposed by Merchant (1982). The accuracy analysis was developed observing the discrepancies between coordinates of selected 240 points from the 1:1000 digital map of São Paulo compared to corresponding points in the three basemaps, (coordinate directions North and East were considered separately). The Google Maps basemap for the city of São Paulo was divided in two (ortophoto mosaic for the central area and satellite images mosaic in the remainder peripheral areas), due to the considerable differences in their accuracy patterns. In order to classify each basemap as per Federal Decree 89.817, we have defined a scale in which only 10% of discrepancies were above the LMAS90 and the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of the discrepancies sample was equal to 60,8% of LMAS90. The final selected scale was the smallest (less detailed) of those obtained in each of the processes. The statistical analysis was based on the test of bias error and by a test of precision. Because the three basemaps have presented biases, the final scales defined by the precision test were not considered in the results, for it is difficult to eliminate biases in these basemaps when used in a GIS. We have obtained the following final scales to class A of the Brazilian Decree: Google Maps (area covered by satellite images): 1:12.400; Google Maps (area covered by ortophotos): 1:3.588; Bing Maps: 1:10.881 and ESRIs Word Imagery: 1:8.420. In conclusion, (a) the three products with scales around a 1:10.000 present accuracy to be used as basemap in GIS for urban planning studies and (b) Google Maps (area covered by ortophotos, scale around 1:4.000) can be equally used for planning studies, as well as urban services manager, due to its greater accuracy. The key limitations for the use of such basemaps as spatial references in GIS was the inclination of features which are distant from the image or ortophoto nadir (off-nadir effects) and the consequent shadowing of adjoining areas. However, this limitation is almost irrelevant to the scales defined for the basemaps in the accuracy analysis.

Abstract:
American Kestrel Nest Box Programs have been established since the mid 1960’s. The population of American Kestrels (Falco sparverius) along nest box trails has decreased by 47 percent since their original implementation. There are existing technologies that can help in the location of prime kestrel habitat (open fields with conspicuous perching locations) along highways, which reduces the amount of labor in searching for new box locations. These technologies can also help increase the efficiency of monitoring and maintaining kestrel nest trail programs. This study provides an example of how Google Maps can be implemented into a kestrel trail and explains the multiple benefits of the integration.

Abstract:
Context: Smartphone is gaining popularity due to its feasible mobility, computing capacity and efficient energy. Emails, text messaging, navigation and visualizing geo-spatial data through browsers are common features of smartphone. Display of geo-spatial data is collected in computing format and made publically available. Therefore the need of usability evaluation becomes important due to its increasing demand. Identifying usability requirements are important as conventional functional requirements in software engineering. Non-functional usability requirements are objectives and testable using measurable metrics. Objectives: Usability evaluation plays an important role in the interaction design process as well as identifying user needs and requirements. Comparative usability requirements are identified for the evaluation of a geographical information system (Google Maps) on personal computer (Laptop) and smartphone (iPhone). Methods: ISO 9241-11 guide on usability is used as an input model for identifying and specifying usability level of Google Maps on both personal computer and smartphone for intended output. Authors set target value for usability requirements of tasks and questionnaire on each device, such as acceptability level of tasks completion, rate of efficiency and participant’s agreement of each measure through ISO 9241-11 respectively. The usability test is conducted using Co-discovery technique on six pairs of graduate students. Interviews are conducted for validation of test results and questionnaires are distributed to get feedback from participants. Results: The non-functional usability requirements were tested and used five metrics measured on user performance and satisfaction. Through usability test, the acceptability level of tasks completion and rate of efficiency was matched on personal computer but did not match on iPhone. Through questionnaire, both the devices did not match participant’s agreement of each measure but only effectiveness matched on personal computer. Usability test, interview and questionnaire feedback are included in the results. Conclusions: The authors provided suggestions based on test results and identified usability issues for the improvement of Google Maps on personal computer and iPhone.

Abstract:
The use of geographical data is increasing in real world applications and due to this, Geographic information systems (GIS) are a growing interest area for research nowadays. Today, GIS is combined with the World Wide Web (WWW) to provide information to a lot of people. Web-based GIS applications have gained popularity because of their easy use and simplicity. Through browsers, web-based GIS applications can display maps with features like buildings, forests, roads and even traffic. Furthermore spatial data can be analyzed and large amounts of data can be viewed on small screens by zooming and panning the map. So having all the above features, effective web-based GIS applications should be designed in a way that they should be easy to use and understand for users. Usability evaluation is becoming an important part of Interaction Design to find out the user´s needs and requirements. In this study two web-based GIS applications (Google Maps and MapQuest) are evaluated to find out usability problems. To accomplish the main goal of this study, different techniques are used. Special criteria are adopted for usability evaluation of these two web-based GIS applications. Usability tests have been performed with six graduate users and questionnaires were filled out by these users. Interviews were conducted with six users to validate the results. The authors have provided a number of suggestions based on the problems that were identified in this study for Google Maps and MapQuest to improve the usability of these applications.

This thesis demonstrates the design and implementation of creating a web based geographic information system. The system is built by adapting the Google Maps API library and building a web server to display and explore agricultural data.

Throughout history, different tools have been invented to help people navigate in space. The different tools use different modes of representation as abstractions of 3-dimensional space. Two of the representations used in Google Maps, a modem wayfinding technology, are the 3D geographic model mode and the street view panorama mode. In this thesis, we explore the wayfinding behaviors of people in those two representations by performing experiments. We find that each representation mode is advantageous for a different type of city structure (e.g., regular grid vs. irregular streets). Each representation mode is also preferred by people according to their spatial processing type preference and the wayfinding task type they perform. After evaluating our findings from the experiments, we propose a design of a new representation with facade images augmenting a 2D satellite map. We believe this design incorporates the advantages of both representations studied.

This is a survey of different techniques that may be used for embedding geographicdata into web pages. Different models of GIS communication are examined and a testsubject in the form of an application is implemented and evaluated. The test application (‘StudentKarta’ eng. ‘Student Map’) lets students submit theirresidential data and shows their position as pins on an embedded Map.An expire date is used to let the pins fade away and disappear. The application uses the popular Google map engines to display the geographicalpresentations. Both 2D (Google Maps) and 3D (Google Earth) are used and the pinsare rendered by using bitmaps and 3-models.

Abstract:
The history of census in Brazil shows that the worry with the territorial component in statistical surveys appeared in the 1940 Census. For the first time the Brazilian Institute for Geography and Statistics (IBGE) tried to describe aspects of the geographic reality, of interest for the assembling operation in cartographic basis a complex task due to the great extension of the Brazilian territory and mainly in relation to the quality of the cartographic material available at that time. Nowadays in our country the demands for more detailed and geographically positioned data grow governors and majors, planning institutes at municipal and state levels, owners of more autonomy and new responsibilities after the 1988 Constitution depend today as never before on the census to define their public policies based on up-dated data on the population under their jurisdictions.Nevertheless the demands for date linked to the position come also from other areas which range from the non-governmental and private sector of the Federal Government increasing the importance of census and by consequence the results of the researches. To respond to the great demand, the IBGE continuously implement the so-called Territorial Base, which is an integrated data system of geographical nature and alfa-numerical and it is the main requisite for the warrant of the adequate cover of the census operations. Due to this new scenery, IBGE started the elaboration of maps of the territorial base through digital means during the preparation actions for the 2000 Census, facing difficulties concerning the integration of urban and rural areas and the low quality of mapping data in cadastral scale, available in less developed areas once the institution does not produce in a cadastral scale. The methodology proposed aims at improving the quality of Urban Sectors Maps MSU, using the Google Earth images, from the software Micro Station 95, peripheric and applicative of conversion available at IBGE, with the establishment of a new routine of work for the production and replacement of the maps of the urban sectors, in order to guarantee a greater territorial representativeness of statistical data for dissemination.

This paper explores the development and implementation of an in-browser map with the purpose of visualizing large sets of geographic data. The map is implemented into a pre-existing search engine of geographic data. Two mapping frameworks are compared in terms of performance, ease-of-use, and functionality. These frameworks are Leaflet and Google Maps. This paper also explores which issues may arise when implementing these mapping frameworks within a pre-existing ASP.NET project. These aspects were evaluated through performance tests, documentation reading, and compiling experiences gained through implementing the map within the search engine. The experiments show that both Leaflet and Google Maps are viable frameworks to use when developing in-browser maps, but also that they have their pros and cons. Google Maps sports a generally higher level of performance, and a larger set of paid available services. Leaflet is a free, open-source alternative with a large plugin repository, but relies on third-party services for features such as geocoding.

For effective utilization of network infrastructure (NI) there is a need to study on mobility patterns of subscribers.   The aim of the thesis is to simulate the geospatial Telenor mobility data (i.e. three different subscriber categorized segments) and provide a visual support in google maps using google maps API, which helps in decision making to the telecommunication operators for effective utilization of network infrastructure (NI).    In this thesis there are two major objectives. Firstly, categorize the given geospatial telenor mobility data using subscriber mobility algorithm. Secondly, providing a visual support for the obtained categorized geospatial telenor mobility data in google maps using a geovisualization simulation tool.    The algorithm used to categorize the given geospatial telenor mobility data is subscriber mobility algorithm. Where this subscriber mobility algorithm categorizes the subscribers into three different segments (i.e. infrastructure stressing, medium, friendly). For validation and confirmation purpose of subscriber mobility algorithm a tetris optimization model is used. To give visual support for each categorized segments a simulation tool is developed and it displays the visualization results in google maps using Google Maps API.   The result of this thesis are presented to the above formulated objectives. By using subscriber mobility algorithm and tetris optimization model to a geospatial data set of 33,045 subscribers only 1400 subscribers are found as infrastructure stressing subscribers. To look informative, a small region (i.e. boras region) is taken to visualize the subscribers from each of the categorized segments (i.e. infrastructure stressing, medium, friendly).    The conclusion of the thesis is that the functionality thus developed contributes to knowledge discovery from geospatial data and provides visual support for decision making to telecommunication operators.

Abstract:
Urban public green space is a core contributor to cultural ecosystem services in cities, comprising the non-material benefits that people obtain from contact with nature. Due to the many benefits that have been ascribed to it, green space has become subject to debates on justice about its fair distribution and equal opportunities to use it. Teenage girls living in socio-economically challenged neighbourhoods appear to belong to a societal group that is restricted in accessing green space, as well as having less opportunities to influence the governance of such space. Attempting to bring further light to these issues, this study utilises a phenomenological approach in which intersectionality theory is central. It aims to explore how intersections of identity markers, such as age, gender, and place of residence, interact with girls’ lived experiences of green space. It does so by collecting first-person narratives in eight interactive and online interviews with the support of satellite, aerial and street view imagery provided by Google Maps. The result shows the great complexity of urban public green space as a place with room for both feelings of liberty and feelings of exclusion. The girls’ narratives unveil how urban green is an important source for well-being and quality of life, and how connection with nature enables connection with loved ones, the community, and with oneself. Simultaneously, identity markers, such as age, gender, and place of residence, intersect into a synergy of exclusion for teenage girls to fully encounter urban nature. Feelings of urban public green space as a place occupied by others contribute to experiences of it as inappropriate and unsafe for girls to visit in certain places during certain times. This suggests how green space works as an arena for power relations, where the opportunities for girls to benefit from its free use and from cultural ecosystem services decrease under certain circumstances. Narratives and myths that green space is dangerous for girls paint a geography of fear; in which fear of becoming a victim of crime is expressed as a fear of space. This fear increases with preconceptions and self-images that girls are defenceless and weak. Furthermore, these experiences intersect with feelings that their neighbourhoods, and the green wherein, are framed adversely and neglected by planners, politicians, municipalities and the government. Still, the girls express great appreciation and pride over the voluminous public green areas in their neighbourhoods. Despite experiencing less power to influence, they have strong visions and aspirations to impact the design and function of urban nature, which indicates prospects for empowerment and revitalisation of green space. It is concluded that recognising lived experiences of girls is essential when working towards safe and accessible, but also lively and inviting, green space. Furthermore, it is argued that insights from intersectionality is valuable when researching use of green space, as intersectionality is a profoundly spatial concept; in which social categories articulate in relation to place and time, and where power and identity contribute at shaping experiences of green space.

Over the last decades the Vehicle Routing Problem (VRP) has been subject of research of several authors, mainly because of difficulties found in its optimization as well as its application in real-world situations. In the scientific literature there are several proposed solutions for the PRV using different optimization techniques. However, such solutions are rarely transformed into software tools that can be used by end users, for example, micro enterprises. Thus, the focus of the present work was to develop a Web computational tool for vehicle routing, called “SGRV  Sistema de Gestão de Roteamento de Veículos”, which uses Google Maps features and aims to meet the needs of micro enterprises. Therefore, initially it was conducted a literature search about solution methods for VRP, to support the choice of strategy based on genetic algorithms employed in SGRV. Then, a new bibliographic research was made with the purpose of finding free softwares for the VRP solution, which were object of analysis to mark out the development of the SGRV. For the development of this research was used the methodology Design Science Research. A qualitative evaluation of the SGRV was carried out by four microenterprises from different branches, that used the tool for a certain period and, in the end, answered six questions opened from semi-structured interviews. The experiences of these microenterprises were transcribed and the data obtained reveal the effectiveness of the SGRV in the management of its tasks related to the orders and deliveries of products.

Objectivity and neutrality of current makers of online maps is hampered by the fact that the most important of them who form the public opinion are largely commercial giants. Sensitivity of approaches is desirable especially in specific situations involving territorial disputes. The textual part of the thesis brings theoretical insights to the problematics of map makers policies and their preservation or violation. At the same time is describes critical cartography as a current opposition against governmental and cooperative mapping, of which counter-mapping processes are regularly used in art, too. Practical outcome attempts to reflect specific approaches of map makers depending on particular territorial disputes. It takes place mostly in online environment, using the functions of Google Street View or Google Earth and forms of counter-mapping on the OSM platform. The goal is to bring alternative realities complicating map makers policies and governing apparatus to map projects with the international coverage.

Abstract:
Open innovation has been rising in popularity as an alternative to traditional model for organizations to enhance innovation in their products or services. In the past, the innovation processes was time-consuming and costly. It has now become significantly efficient and effective, supported by the advancement of today’s IT such as Internet, Cloud Computing and Big Data. Open innovation has changed the aspect of the innovation source; from closed internal R&D to fully utilization of consumers’ collaboration. Decision to shift towards open innovation strategy has been lying on several areas including motivation, financial direction, and preference of the innovation strategies and business models that fitting the organizational core strategy. This research studied the relation of these areas and its effect; it determined the way IT-organization creates and captures value that were done by opening its product platform. This thesis was conducted to analyze the open innovation approach in an open digital navigation platform, featuring two platforms as case study: Google Maps and OpenStreetMap. The investigation emphasized the utilizing of the open innovation strategy to build its platform where crowdsourcing and open source software as objects highlighted in the research. The data was collected from secondary sources. Research findings suggested that crowdsourcing and open source software strategy are the main strategies of open innovation implemented in IT digital mapping platform to create and capture value. While these strategies have been practiced in both platforms, circumstances (motivation, financial direction, and business strategy) that hovering around the internal aspect of organizations affected the application of those strategies. The implementation results are differ according to preferred business model. The result of this research suggested that a non-profit based organization tends to utilize open innovation to improve the value of their product through consumer collaboration, while a profit based organization adopts open innovation to generate additional pool of revenue through customers’ feedback and input data. The world is becoming smarter with an increase in efficiency of wireless communication resulting in an accelerated use of smart phones. Open source of Android market gave a chance to individuals to freely develop their own applications which could be run easily on Android smart phones. The purpose of this project is to develop an Android application for managing and tracking a user’s shopping information. The Smart tracker is about tracking the user's purchase of clothes and accessories. The main advantage of this Android app is that it helps to remember the size of clothing purchased. When a user shops at a retail store, he feeds the information pertaining to the fitting of the clothes purchased brand wise, whether it is a correct fit or a bit loose/tight. The data thus entered can be retrieved when he decides to make a purchase in the same store in future. This tremendously decreases the user’s shopping time and makes the experience easier as the right size is already known and hence there is no hassle of using trial rooms to see if the clothes fit. In addition to size, Smart tracker also stores the price at which the item was bought and any additional user comments along with the store location. When data pertaining to a purchased clothing item is entered, the app provides the option to append an image of the item either by capturing a picture through the smart phone’s camera or by uploading an image from the gallery. This helps the user recount the item to which the information corresponds. Another important feature is that tracking of purchases for a family can be personalized, i.e., the shopping information of each family member can be stored separately (especially for kids who can't track their own expense). Additionally, the user can also keep track of money spent on each item/brand/family member. Smart tracker also enables user to create a wish list to remember what they (or a friend) liked but didn't buy in a particular store.

Abstract:

This dissertation makes the connection between the human drive, as described by psychoanalysis, to construct God and the construction of the technological entity, Google. Google constitutes the extension of the early Christian period God to the twenty-first century. From the examination of significant religious and theological texts by significant theologians (Augustine, Thomas, Luther, Calvin, etc.) that explain the nature of God, the analogous relationship of God to Google will open a psychoanalytic discourse that answers questions on the current state of human mediation with the world. Freud and, more significantly, Lacan’s work connects the human creation of God, ex nihilio, to Google’s godly qualities and behaviors (omniscience, omnipotence, omnipresence, and omnibenevolence). This illustrates the powerful motivation behind the creation of an allencompassing physical / earthly entity that includes the immaterial properties of God.

Essentially, Google operates as the extension or replacement of the long reigning God in Western culture. Furthermore, the advent of science and technology through rationalism (as outlined by Nietzsche) results in the death of the metaphysical God and the ascension of the technological God. Google offers an appropriate example for study. Moreover, the work of Jean Baudrillard and Marshall McLuhan will further comment on Google as the technological manifestation of God, particularly in its media formulations. Finally, this dissertation concludes with a review that highlights future research with an exploration that foresees the death of Google from the same rational method of inquiry by which the death of God occurred at the end of the nineteenth century.

Abstract:
The awareness of power consumption is considered to be an important step of driving energy- saving technologies development. With the ‘Smart Grid’ technologies, Sweden has deployed Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) nationwide. How to present and operate the data be collected by AMI devices in an effective and friendly way has become a problem worth to research on. This thesis project aims to provide an energy consumption monitoring system, which integrate power consumption information from AMI, and geographic information from coordinates, for both customers and power companies, practical for the latter one. Based on that, active web map services of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in Swedish market are also been analyzed in this thesis report, in order to investigate the features which may be applied in this system. The energy consumption monitoring system presented in this project is developed on the GIS of Google Maps, web-browser based. With the open Google Maps API for Javascript and WAMP environment support, a working system is given locally. In this project, at a designated Swedish area, Smedjebacken, there are 50 end-users with AMI data periodically recorded at the interval level of one hour for a whole year, and 3 substations connecting part of the end-users, all of them have the coordinates to position. AMI data is used to simulate a real-time scenario to test the monitoring function. Functions of this system are separated into two aspects, customers and power companies. Customers can check their power consumption in many different ways, including latest hour’s consumption, any past single day’s consumption, generate whole year’s consumption column chart, comparing with the average consumption level with a certain range of neighbors. Power companies have global view and access authorities of all customers and substations. In addition, an alarm will be triggered if any of the substation’s power loss is over 5%. As a result of analysis, the advantage lay with Google Map on cost of developing, open API and documentations. In the end, a working monitoring system is given under the simulated real-time power consumption scenario.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis describes the process of analyzing and evaluating geographic services, and the development of map applications for nationwide networks. The project was performed at DGC, a datacommunications-, telephony- and networks operator which distributes customer access across Sweden where consumers are connected to the backbone network. In whole, the task consisted of an analysis regarding the possibilities of address-to-coordinate lookup for established customer sites, displaying the access network in a map interface and developing one or more tools, aimed at supporting order processes. Architecture patterns, use-cases construed from user requests and analysis of external provider services for geocoding determined the design of the solution. Software was partially integrated in existing systems, and partially distributed as stand-alone applications. The product was finalized with a release. Read further to get a description of the monitoring tool, network mapping with KML, dealing with geographic data, and also the process of fetching coordinates for addresses.

Technology should be used in schools as a teaching resource through their ability to interact with simulations, animations and forms of the map, so it is necessary that the teacher qualify for the proper use of this tool.
