Abstract:
This thesis investigates the narrative strategies of Jeanne Goosen, as employed in her short novel, Louoond. I regard this text as an excellent example of modern Afrikaans prose, and particular reference was made to her previous novel: Om 'n mens na te boots which indicates similarities to the text under scrutiny. Chapter One is a close reading of the first chapter of the novel, in order to identify certain prominent codes, and also to determine what the text itself prescribes. My presumption is that the text determines how it should be read, that no single, predetermined strategy can be rigidly applied to it. Thus I formulated my own individual possible reading from the first chapter, and I view it throughout as mere "speculation", since this possible reading remains only a possibility. Chapter Two contains the theoretical background that is necessary for a scientific study of this kind. I followed mainly the strategies of Roland Barthes and Jacques Derrida, who are pioneers in the post -modernistic theory. It was particularly important to investigate the role of the narrator: the narrator in Louoond presents herself as a writer, therefore it is the process that is paramount. In Chapter Three the code of writing, as identified in Chapter ʺOneʺ of Louoond, is followed closely throughout the text. In Louoond, which is metatextual, violence is textually inherent, and also part of the process of writing. This violence is definitely also part of the South African situation as it is signified in the novel. Throughout the narrator is in a state of tension about her own role in the ʺrevolutionʺ - in which also her own text is a revolution in language, but always within the NOW of South Africa. Chapter Four concerns itself mainly with the role of the woman as narrator, as muse, as primary protagonist. I discuss the code of woman in relation to prominent feminist writers, but it remains in context of the text. Each issue is in the first place determined by the text, the text therefore determines which feminist issues will be investigated. The South African situation, and specifically the Afrikaner situation, serves throughout as intertext for Louoond, as with the code of writing. Other intertextual references are important, because the text is never independent from anything outside itself, and could not exist in such independence. Music plays an important role, with Callas as muse and as fellow female artist, while George Sand functions as fellow writer. Woman, independent of man, is put forward as creator. In my reading, the text remains in the first place a fabrication/imitation of the South African reality, and the fInal scene reaffirms the ʺfinal catastropheʺ that is indicated in the motto as a ʺcondition of controlled hysteriaʺ

Abstract:
* * * The novel Ons is nie almal so nie (1990) by Jeanne Goosen is presented in a realistic (or traditional) narrative form. In feminist terms this narrative form is referred to as patriarchal or phallocentric. As such, the text differs radically from the narrative mode in which the author's previous texts are presented. This shift invites an assessment of the text within a framework of feminist theory and criticism. Moreover, it indicates the need for an investigation into the relationship of feminist literature and scholarship to the dominant male voice of traditional discourse. It is stressed that each of the feminist theoretical positions reveals the unreservedly political purpose of all feminist writing. It is further suggested that patriarchal power exists in institutions and social practices, not merely in individual intentions. Patriarchal power is therefore not a part of immutable nature, but open to effective theoretical analyses and practical change. Due to their preoccupation with patriarchal power, feminist literary theories are often criticised as being blind to issues of race and/or class. It is recognised that feminist literary theory must transcend the issue of sexism; that its future lies in a far more articulated dialogue with materialism. The express purpose of the marxist-feminist critical position is to take into account questions not only of language and gender, but also of class and race. Goosen's text is particularly receptive to an exploration of these interrelated problems.

Goosen, Pieter. "Efficient monitoring of mine compressed air savings / by P. Goosen." Thesis, North-West University, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/9660.

Abstract:
In 2011 South Africa's main electricity supplier, Eskom, experienced a peak electricity demand of 89% of their total installed generation capacity. The high utilisation rate makes it difficult to perform essential maintenance on the system. Eskom implements Demand-Side Management (DSM) projects in various industries, in order to reduce the demand and to ensure sustainable electricity supply. The mining sector consumes 14.5% of the total amount of electricity generated by Eskom. Mine compressed air systems can consume as much as 40% of a mine's total electricity requirements. This makes mine compressed air systems an ideal target for DSM. Electricity load seems to be reduced, but many DSM savings are not sustained throughout the project lifetime. An existing project feedback method of a specific Energy Services Company (ESCo) includes the manual collection of data from the mines and manual generation of reports. These reports show energy savings of the DSM projects to help the ESCo and their clients to improve and sustain the performance of the projects. A great amount of man-hours is used which results in large time delays in the feedback-loop. In order to address this, the need for a new automatic feedback reporting system was identified. This study mainly focusses on the development and implementation of a new method to monitor DSM savings on mine compressed air systems. It includes the reliable collection of data from mines, processing and storing of the data in a central database and generating savings reports. This is done automatically on a daily basis. In order to complete the feedback-loop, the reports are verified and emailed to clients and ESCo personnel on a daily basis. The new reporting system is implemented at a number of mines. Four of these project implementations are used as case studies to measure and interpret the effectiveness and value of this system. It saves a significant amount of man-hours and proves to be of great value in the sustainability of DSM project savings. Both Eskom and mining companies benefit from the efficient monitoring of mine compressed air savings.<br>Thesis (MIng (Computer and Electronic Engineering))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2013.

Goosen, Johannes Christiaan. "Comparing generalized additive neural networks with multilayer perceptrons / Johannes Christiaan Goosen." Thesis, North-West University, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/5552.

Full text
Abstract:
In this dissertation, generalized additive neural networks (GANNs) and multilayer perceptrons (MLPs) are studied and compared as prediction techniques. MLPs are the most widely used type of artificial neural network (ANN), but are considered black boxes with regard to interpretability. There is currently no simple a priori method to determine the number of hidden neurons in each of the hidden layers of ANNs. Guidelines exist that are either heuristic or based on simulations that are derived from limited experiments. A modified version of the neural network construction with cross–validation samples (N2C2S) algorithm is therefore implemented and utilized to construct good MLP models. This algorithm enables the comparison with GANN models. GANNs are a relatively new type of ANN, based on the generalized additive model. The architecture of a GANN is less complex compared to MLPs and results can be interpreted with a graphical method, called the partial residual plot. A GANN consists of an input layer where each of the input nodes has its own MLP with one hidden layer. Originally, GANNs were constructed by interpreting partial residual plots. This method is time consuming and subjective, which may lead to the creation of suboptimal models. Consequently, an automated construction algorithm for GANNs was created and implemented in the SAS R statistical language. This system was called AutoGANN and is used to create good GANN models. A number of experiments are conducted on five publicly available data sets to gain insight into the similarities and differences between GANN and MLP models. The data sets include regression and classification tasks. In–sample model selection with the SBC model selection criterion and out–of–sample model selection with the average validation error as model selection criterion are performed. The models created are compared in terms of predictive accuracy, model complexity, comprehensibility, ease of construction and utility. The results show that the choice of model is highly dependent on the problem, as no single model always outperforms the other in terms of predictive accuracy. GANNs may be suggested for problems where interpretability of the results is important. The time taken to construct good MLP models by the modified N2C2S algorithm may be shorter than the time to build good GANN models by the automated construction algorithm<br>Thesis (M.Sc. Abstract:
Thesis (MA (Afrikaans and Dutch))—University of Stellenbosch, 2005.<br>The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between eroticism, violence and death as it occurs in Jeanne Goosen's short story collection, ' n Gelyke kans. The research is based upon the hypothesis that these stories express in a particular manner the transgressive role of eroticism in breaking through social conventions and barriers. As a possible framework for discussion reference is made in the first place to George Bataille's theories on the subversive nature of eroticism, Julia Kristeva's semiotic and pre-Oedipal theories, and Mikhail Bakhtin's notion of the carnivalesque. Subsequently a reading strategy was designed by means of an in-depth analysis of ten stories from the collection in accordance with general formalistic principles. The conclusion is reached that Goosen with non-judgmental sympathy exposes man's inborn, continuous search for the illusion of perfect happiness. This state of bliss is sometimes achieved by the violent "incorporation" of the beloved/desired “other", and the final outcome is a concomitant and inevitable decline into an unwholesome, destructive, and fatal erotic power play.

Goosen, Leilani. "Criteria and guidelines for the selection and implementation of a first programming language in high schools / L. Goosen." Thesis, North-West University, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/226.

Abstract:
The choice of a first programming language is critical for fostering problem solving skills and remains a concern in programming instruction that should be taken into account during discussions on the Computer Science curriculum. Criteria that should be considered in selection, therefore, need to be established. Few precedents exist for the implementation of such a language, and guidelines for this process ought to be introduced. This study aims to institute valid criteria and guidelines for the selection and implementation of a first programming language in high schools. Criteria for selection were established and guidelines for implementation introduced through a literature study, after which the validity of these was tested empirically. Care was taken to ensure the relevance of criteria, which were established regarding the development of thinking and programming skills, requirements for the programming language and its software development environment to make it appropriate for learners, new tendencies in programming, issues influencing programming used in practice, affordability, training and resources, and programming for various purposes. Guidelines were introduced for the implementation of a first programming language in high schools regarding appreciating teachers' roles in implementation, issues surrounding pilot testing, considering cost implications at macro-implementation level, introducing a new curriculum, and guidance, support and assessment. The validity of selection criteria and implementation guidelines identified was empirically verified within the South African context, in that all items in a questionnaire based on criteria and guidelines received averages rating these as 'fairly important'. Effect sizes designating practical significance for differences between 0 the reported importance and application/usage of criteria and guidelines and 0 the use of implementation guidelines as regarded by groups consisting of policy makers and teachers respectively indicate a need for more careful consideration of what is important and practical in the world of the teachers who implement a selected language. Key terms: selection criteria, implementation guidelines, first programming language, high schools, Computer Studies, curriculum development, curriculum implementation, curriculum dissemination<br>Thesis (Ph.D. (Education))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2004.
