Abstract:
Classical Gorani literature is believed to be the oldest Kurdish literary tradition which under the patronage of the Ardalans developed into a “literary koinè” in the seventeenth and the eighteenth centuries. However, despite its antiquity and significance in the history of Kurdish literature, it has remained largely under-studied. It is against this backdrop that I offer an overview of Gorani literature, its history of development, and main literary characteristics in this article. Through extensive text analysis I examine the classical Gorani poetry for its major genres and forms and predominant themes and images. I study Gorani oral and written literature and their interactions, and the role it played in Kurdish poetic modernisation in the twentieth century.Abstract in KurmanjiMîrasa edebî ya ErdelaniyanEdebiyata goranî ya sunnetî wek kevntirîn kelepora edebî ya kurdî tê hesibandin, ku bi patronaja xanedana Erdelaniyan di sedsalên hevdeh û hejdehan de şiklê “koinèyeke edebî” wergirt. Abstract:
The beauty of old age. Poetic image of passingin Goran Petrovic’s proseThe aim of the article was to present the beauty of aging heroes living in adreamlike and idealized worlds of Goran Petrovic’s prose, and to reveal the mechanism of beautifying the aging process itself by reffering to folklore, playing with stereotypes, and using strongly metaphoric language. Presented paper focuses on Petrovic’s interesting ways of showing the beauty hidden in old age, also pointing to forgetting names and words as the most important determinant of aging what indicates aclose connection between human existence and language ontological status of language.Lepota starosti. Abstract:
The article identifies the ways/procedures of revisionism in poetry. Not only does the exclusion of the poetry of Goran Babić from the national corpus not correspond with its poetic complexity and value, but it is also ethically inconsistent. Revisionism follows a national identity path according to which literature with clearly expressed views on socialism cannot fully exist within the history of poetry. Politics has taken the place of poetics.

Abstract:
Studying recent films from the former republics of Yugoslavia, Andrew Horton examines how film-makers depict important issues and themes of the times through humor. Focusing particularly on Goran Paskaljevic's award-winning Cabaret Balkan (1998), which is set in Belgrade during the Bosnian War and weaves a variety of narratives "framed" within a cabaret, Horton places these recent films in a larger context of Yugoslav culture. He draws connections between Balkan comedy and a Yugoslav tradition of satirical theater and poetry, where humor——particularly laughter, dark and joyous——is used to illustrate pressing social and political issues.

Ghaderi, Farangis. "The emergence and development of modern Kurdish poetry." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/22267.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis challenges the traditional literary criticism’s definition of modern poetry and the explanation of its emergence as a radical break with the past in the 1930s and 1940s and conducted by Abdula Goran, “the father of modern Kurdish poetry”. In traditional criticism, the classification of poetry is based on its formal features and modern poetry is characterized by abandoning the classical metrical system (aruz), and employing syllabic meter and free rhyme schemes. However, guided by Lotman’s theory of literary change, this thesis offers a more nuanced approach to the study of modern poetry and examines its emergence as a process of literary change that unfolded through the oeuvre of several poets, starting from the late nineteenth century and culminating in the 1940s. Exploring the process of the poetic change in time and investigating the mechanism of the transformation, three stages of transformation are identified which are represented by the works of Hacî Qadirê Koyî, Rehîm Rehmê Hekarî, and Pîremêrd. A close reading of the works of the selected poets reveals a gradual move from the classical norms and conventions of poetry and a successive introduction of new perspectives, rhetoric, and literary devices into the poetic system. This thesis argues that modern Kurdish poetry emerged in response to the advent of modernity and nationalism in Kurdish society. The study argues that modern poetry was the literary form which accompanied the emergence of Kurdish nationalism, a phenomenon which can be equated with the role played by the novel in Europe. Poetry played a significant role in constructing and disseminating Kurdish nationalism, making it intelligible to uneducated people. The examination of the evolution of modern poetry in this study has revealed lesser known aspects of the formation and the development of Kurdish nationalism and has brought to light the neglected contribution of Kurdish religious intellectuals.

Samsom, Ridder H. "Tungo za Mzee Kimbunga: Haji Gora Haji." Universitätsbibliothek Leipzig, 2012. http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:bsz:15-qucosa-97759.

Full text
Abstract:
Haji Gora Haji (1933) is a Swahili poet from Tumbatu. Some people in Zanzibar call him `The Old Hurricane´ after the title and the first poem of his anthology Kimbunga (1994 Dar es Salaam: Taasisi ya Uchunguzi wa Kiswahili) that made him well-known all over Taniania. While making a living from the sea, as a fisherman, porter in the harbour, sailor and transporter of cloves, he has been composing, since 1955, a large amount of ngoma and taarab songs, riddles, tenzi and mashairi, short stories and, recently, a short novel. This paper discusses metaphors and images that are characteristic of Haji Gora`s work, the way in which they reveal his identity and how they have been put in terms of contradictions and oppositions.
