Abstract:
This article explores tl1e aristotelia n friendship in King 's The Body to answer two questions: 1) how is friendship described in Stephen King 's The body?; 2) what kinds of friendships are  desscribed in Stephen King s The body? Aristotle grouped friendship into tlueefriendship based on utility ,friendship based on pleasure, andfoendship based on goodness. The research method applied was qualitative descriptive. The result of the analysis showed Gordie, Chris, Teddy and Vern performed friendship based on utility and lfriendship based on pleasure while Gordie and Chris perfonned in the friendship based on goodness because only both of them who always stayed to gethe r and shared goodness in their relationship , the y encouraged one another in good things. Chris showed his love and care to Gordie by the way he pushed Gordie to join the collage course and leave the gang because tlle gang will only drag him down.

Abstract:
This article explores cultural constructions of hockey, violence, and masculinity through a close examination of one of the game’s most successful and prominent players in the postwar period, Gordie Howe. By combining skill and scoring ability with toughness, physicality, and a willingness to fight when necessary, Howe epitomized many qualities of the ideal hockey player over the course of his lengthy professional career, which extended from 1946 to 1980. In particular, this study focuses on media coverage of Howe’s highly publicized fight against Lou Fontinato of the New York Rangers on February 1, 1959. Using Canadian and American newspapers and magazines as the primary research base, we analyze media representations of Gordie Howe in the context of ideals and anxieties related to North American masculinity following the Second World War. Historians have identified this period as a time when Canadian and American manhood was perceived to be in decline. We argue that Howe demonstrated a combination of controlled violence and humble manliness suggested by his early nickname in the Detroit press, the “Bashful Basher.” Howe’s rational and expert application of violence – especially in contrast to the emotional Fontinato – firmly established his masculine credentials within the culture of hockey, while positioning him more widely as a “modern” yet rugged role model for masculine renewal in postwar Canada. Howe’s example of gentlemanly masculinity normalized and celebrated a culture of fighting in hockey while establishing a standard of conduct for superstar players that persists to the present day. At the same time, cultural constructions of Howe’s manhood contributed to the entrenchment of a dominant version of heroic, white, heteronormative hockey masculinity in Canadian life.

Abstract:
Transportation infrastructure decisions contribute to social, economic, and health inequities in the U.S. Health Impact Assessments (HIAs) may improve understanding of potential strategies to mitigate adverse effects on quality of life from planned developments. We use the Gordie Howe International Bridge (GHIB), currently under construction in southwest Detroit, MI, as a case study to examine 15 years of community mobilization, which resulted in community benefits that included an HIA. We describe community engagement processes, household survey methods, and select findings of the baseline HIA, with a focus on their application to inform recommendations to promote quality of life. Baseline HIA results indicated significantly higher self-reported asthma rates among children living within 500 feet of trucking routes. Residents reported substantial economic (e.g., decreased home values), health (e.g., adverse outcomes, lack of health care access), and environmental (e.g., air pollution) concerns related to the GHIB. We discuss specific recommendations, based on HIA results, to reduce adverse impacts of the GHIB. These recommendations will inform ongoing community benefits negotiations. This case study provides lessons for community, academic, and government partners conducting HIAs, especially during building and operation of major infrastructure, and discusses their potential role in improving community engagement opportunities towards environmental justice.

Abstract:
AbstractThis article introduces and discusses a short correspondence that took place in November 1931 between Gershom Scholem and Jacob Gordin. Gordin was a Russian-Jewish philosopher of religion, an expert on Hermann Cohen, and a founding figure of the postwar Paris School of Jewish Thought. The initial motivation for the correspondence was Scholem’s wish to produce a critical edition of the 17th century kabbalistic work, Shaar Hashamayim by Abraham Cohen Herrera, for which he asked for Gordin’s help. A close reading of Gordin’s response to Scholem and Scholem’s belated response to Gordin highlight the respective views of these thinkers regarding the relationship between kabbalah and Western philosophy in the modern era, and in German idealism in particular. The article is followed by a translation of the correspondence.

Abstract:
This present research is composed of a presentation of Gore ot uma (1825), by Russian playwright Aleksandr Griboedov, and of the universe in which it was written, as well as a first step in attempt of translating the masterpiece into Portuguese. This first translation embodies the dilemmas inherent to the greatness of the language and, therefore, the first step, for a translation of the masterpiece into Portuguese, follows the path of the signified, in order that, in the future, the signifier, rich and complex, may be focused. Afterwards, we take the path of Russian Theater from the Eighteenth century to the beginning of Nineteenth century, its neoclassical universe, and, in the end, in Gorie ot umas transfigurations to the classical patterns, essentially the conflicts originated by actions that work, in the two main plots, in a equal manner.

Zacharias, Erica Ashley. "Gordon Matta-Clark's photographic spaces." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/38192.

Full text
Abstract:
Gordon Matta-Clark (1943-1978) is best known for his experimental “building cuts,” in which he reconfigured whole architectural spaces slated for destruction in North and South America, and in Europe. An extensive scholarship theorizes Matta-Clark’s practice as a critique of his architectural education and a recuperation of the social spaces outside its purview. Today, audiences view Matta-Clark’s building cuts through the two-dimensional media of film and photography, further complicating the original works’ play with temporality and performance. Recent scholarship has seen photography as central to Matta-Clark’s performance-based and sculptural practice. This thesis addresses a gap in scholarship between Matta-Clark’s photography and his ephemeral works. Matta-Clark’s use of photography as document relates to the Land Art practice of exhibiting outdoor works inside the gallery. His photographs also engage in the photoconceptual practice of questioning that very documentary status. I trace three modalities for the photographic within Matta-Clark’s works: image (referent), object (medium), and apparatus (technology). I suggest that the photographic image is historically situated by the latter two categories as an ontologically specific space, at once material and abstract, technological and theoretical. My research draws on theoretical discourses underpinning Modernist architecture. The role of photography is belied in Modernist architectural discourse, a mainstay of Cornell’s architecture program under the leadership of historian Colin Rowe, from which Matta-Clark received a BArch in 1968. I find an unstated connection between photography and phenomenal transparency, a term defined in Rowe and Robert Slutzky’s influential essay, “Transparency: Literal and Phenomenal,” where it is used to describe the abstraction of space in the work of Le Corbusier. I set up a theoretical framework for the conceptual role of photography in Matta-Clark’s practice by being attentive to the relationship between photography and architecture through the photographic slice, the visualized analog to the sculptural cut. I argue that in order to criticize the supposed transparency of both photography and architecture apparent in contemporary art practices and Modernist architectural discourse respectively, Matta-Clark’s work investigated the two media in tandem.

GODDERIS, TOUDIC GODDERIS HELENE. "Les nouvelles de Nadine Gordimer." Angers, 1996. http://www.theses.fr/1996ANGE0014.

Full text
Abstract:
Nadine gordimer, an english speaking south african writer received the nobel prize in 1991. It rewarded the author of ten novels and nine collections of short stories. Scrutinizing her short stories in a narratological approach one is struck by the particular use made of focalization by the author. She confers an important part on the narrator in its relations to the reader and to the author, while compelling the reader to participate in the text through "the character-effect". Along the various collections one notices the evolution of the part granted by the author to the black character on the one hand, to interracial relations on the other hand. The character's function as well as its direct or indirect characterization are examined. Although nadine gordimer is under the influence of the sociological and political background from which she writes, she does not restrict her themes to specifically south-african issues but includes human relations as a whole. Coherence is achieved in each collection by the fact that stories all focus on a leading topic

Talafha, Abdallah M. "Modified Stochastic Sine-Gordon Equation." OpenSIUC, 2014. https://opensiuc.lib.siu.edu/dissertations/973.

Full text
Abstract:
The main focus of my dissertation is the Modified Stochastic Sine-Gordon Equation: utt = 2uxx − ut − sin(|u|^(&gamma)) + b(u, du/dt)dW/dt where &gamma > 0 is the parameter of the power of non-linearity, &delta &ge 0 is the magnitude of non-linearity, &alpha> 0 be the damping parameter, and &sigma the diffusion intensity, on one dimensional domain. We analyze the properties of the solution of the SPDE by the eigenfunctions approach allowing us to truncate the infinite-dimensional stochastic system (i.e the SDEs of Fourier coefficients related to the SPDE), to control its energy, existence, uniqueness, continuity and stability. The analysis relies on the investigation of expected Lyapunov functional of the energy in terms of all system-parameters. We simulate the model with respect to all system-parameters to visualize our conclusions.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT - UTILITY OF THE FATTY ACID OF ERYTHROCYTES AS BIOMARKERS MUSCLE FATTY ACID COMPOSITION IN BEEF - Beef is getting increasing negative attention due its high content on saturated fatty acids (SFA) and trans fatty acids (TFA) and its low content of polyunsaturated fat. were identified as a possible cause of many types of important diseases. Actual human nutritional recommendations establish a limit to saturated fatty acids and trans fatty acids intake. Thus, animal production studies are being developed to try to find production strategies to improve meat’s fatty acids profile. The main goal of the present work is to explore the possibility of forecasting meat’s fatty acids compositions based on fatty acid composition of erythrocytes, enabling ante-mortem monitorisation of target production objectives. Blood and meat samples of 40 male young bull were used to study the fatty acid profile of erythrocytes and muscle lipid fractions. Fatty acids were analysed by gas chromatography and liquid chromatography. Multiple regressions analysis were used to explore the prediction potential of this approach. The results showed that it is possible to forecast some fatty acids composition, such as CLA, 18:1 trans-11, 18:3 n-3 and total de n-3 PUFA, from the information gathered from fatty acids of erythrocytes, particularly when detailed information about the CLA isomeric profile in erythrocytes were used.

Abstract:
<p>This paper discusses the development of project-specific live load models to achieve target reliability levels for the Gordie Howe International Bridge. This new bridge between Windsor, Ontario Canada and Detroit, Michigan USA will have a main span of 853 m (2800 ft), a design life of 125 years, and will experience atypical traffic patterns as a result of customs inspection plazas required at both ends of the bridge. Due to these variations relative to standard practice, large databases of weigh-in-motion data and simulation studies were used to modify the live load models of both country’s codes following the approach of NCHRP 683. The limit states addressed extend beyond the Strength 1 (ULS 1), to include high dead-to-live ratio combinations, and fatigue limit states.</p>
