Full textThis thesis results from a ten years search about human presence and arrangements of natural caves. First, our assumption stood out clearly with prejudices often repeated about caves, allways and anywhere frigtening people and keeping them abroad. Now, caves had full place in traditional development of limestone countries and montains. In so far as there was an actual interest, nobody never hesitated in going underground nor in facing great difficulties and risks. In the first two chapters are collected elements of proof and the human presence in caves is looked at in all its various bearings : shelters-caves, caves arranged to forteresses and maturing cheese places, caves turned in sanctuaries and so on. . . Third chapter deals with underground tourism, where interface caves as they were perceived by local populations able to catch a little money with visitors, and underground landscapes contemplated by urban travellers. Genesis of this touristic ressource had narrow links with progress of cave science, history of sensibilities and needing in touristic attractions around spas. Fourth and fifth chapters forsake daily presence in caves and take an interest in scientific and patrimonial status of caves : as varius sights of caves were discovered, progressively grows the care of their protection. Around 300 caves and pot-holes are today protected in France by several laws and status here studied

Full textThrough this clinical analysis of mallarme's work, we shall endeavour to register the various fates of an ideal framed by a literary dream but that, at the same time, would bang the impossible barrier. Along this route from dream to disillusion, faith to art, quest for absolute, lead the poet to have an experience about limits, in which he borders on death and madness. If the subject jeopardizes himself by doing this experience that gives to understand a passion for emptiness, to accept the poetical hazard is eventually, too, what allows the narcissical rebuilding. Thus, through a quite elaborated defensive strategy, challenging the risk and resorting to different time and space, mallarme succeeds in managing - and even holding- this gap between the real and the ideal, bafflinghis own desire. This essay is, therefore, questionning the creator's enjoyment, which firstly cancelled in mallarme's work, surfaces back in a roundabout way, through sublimation

Full textThis thesis aims to read the German romantic poet Novalis in the light of negative theology. To establish its influence on his work, this thesis begins with a recount of Novalis’ religiosityin the context of his age, based on three hymnals with which he was familiar (respectivelyLutheran, Roman Catholic and Moravian). After outlining Christianity at the end of the 18thcentury, it analyzes the evolution of Novalis’ religious feelings throughout his life, and theperceptible change which occurs from the great Christian year 1799 and beyond. The core ofthe thesis deals with the dialectic, linguistic and poetic strategies inherited from negativetheology in Novalis’ literary works, as well the relationship between speech, imagery and theabsolute. It describes the motives of descent, night, contemplation, reciprocal gazes, andmirrors and dreams as an access to a new form of knowledge, which ceases to be conceived asa way upwards to illumination, but as a gradual darkening downwards. At a crossroadsbetween post Kantian philosophy and Christianity, Romanticism reclaims the inheritance ofGerman mysticism and reverses the path leading to the absolute: this thesis finally argues thatmirrors, dreams and endarkenment are key motives identifying a speculative family of authorsamong Romanticism. Thus it proceeds by comparison to highlight first the paradigmaticchange occurring between Baroque, the Enlightenment and Romanticism, then the persistenceof that very specific mental configuration throughout the 19th Century, in the works ofseveral authors belonging to German, French and English Romanticism

Full textThe set objective of this thesis is to present the travel as the ultimate metaphorical interpretation of life and existence in the works of Benjamin Fondane (1898-1944), Adonis (1929) and Roberto Mussapi (1952). Through their critical and theoretical essays and particularly through their poetic works, we decipher their own perception of travel. This analysis is based on concepts defined by the German philosopher Hans Blumenberg and particularly his theory of ‘metaphorology’. Navigating the elements of land, sea, air and fire – these four quintessential pillars of man’s ‘mental map’– we ultimately discover the different possibilities of the real travel as well of the metaphorical one, a travel which ultimately gets shipwrecked. This work is as much a reflection on the travel as it is a ‘reconstruction’ of the poetic journey. While exposing its most preferred constructs, the myths enriching them and its scope in relation to universal knowledge, the travel becomes not only a metaphor of our existence but also the looking-glass through which ‘poetic wisdom’ becomes revealed. This thesis suggests connecting links between the philosophical “logos” and poetical “mythos”, two traditionally opposing sides with the resulting conclusion that life is indeed a journey and man is its helpless and bound traveler
