Esta dissertação pretende analisar a inserção de grupos de oração carismáticos no meio universitário. Pretende-se questionar o senso comum “douto” presente neste meio que afirma que esta inserção pode ser vista como questionadora da composição moderna (laica) da universidade. Reforça esse questionamento a análise das articulações que esses grupos vêm realizando, o que permite encontrar mais modernidade nesses grupos e menos laicidade na universidade. Os universitários que participam desses grupos não apenas rezam, cantam e pregam, também procuram falar e se envolver com a ciência, o mundo do trabalho e a participação política. Não seriam estes elementos pilares constitutivos de nossa universidade? Desse modo, a medida em que acionam dispositivos próprios da universidade legitimam sua inserção, sem ter que dever nada para a universidade, que é por eles assimilada.
L’objectif de celle dissertacion est analyser l'intégration des groupes de prière charismatique dans le milieu universitaire. L'objectif est discuter le sens commun “douto” présent dans l’université, lequel affirme que cette intégration peut être considérée comme remise en question de la composition moderne (laïque) de l'université. Renforce cette question l'analyze de l’articulacion que ces groupes réalisent, ce qui permet de trouver plus modernité aux groupes et moins de la laïcité dans l’université. Les universitaires qui participent ces groupes ne sont pas prié seulement, chanté et de prêché, mais aussi ils sont parlé et cherché à s'impliquer avec la science, le monde du travail et la participation politique. Ne serait pas ces éléments piliers constitutifs de notre université? Ainsi, quand ils ont rapporté dispositifs propre de l'université légitimé son insertion, sans avoir à être quelque chose de l'université, qui est assimilé par eux.

Abstract:

The VizzAnalyzer Framework is a stand-alone tool for analyzing and visualizing the structures of large software systems. Today, it has its own limited Swing based GUI lacking a professional look & feel. Furthermore, the effort needed to extend the VizzAnalyzer with new features like automatic update, progress monitoring, help system, and integration of the Eclipse Java and C/C++ AST API is high.

In order to improve current limitations and ease the future maintenance effort we refactored the VizzAnalyzer to be a plug-in to the Eclipse platform. We removed the burden of GUI development from the authors of the VizzAnalyzer replacing the Swing GUI with a SWT based GUI, which utilizes the rich feature set provided by the Eclipse Platform. Furthermore, the we did not only provide existing features of the VizzAnalyzer as loading and binding graphs, a complex system to load dynamic plug-ins functionalities for analysis, retrieval and visualization. We implemented an update and help manager, allowed for an easy use of third party plug-ins, which are available for Eclipse, and provided product branding.

We propose that the newly created VizzAnalyzer 2.0 solved the aforementioned limitations and provides a good foundation for the future evolution of the VizzAnalyzer tool.

This master thesis documents our how the VizzAnalyzer 2.0 has been developed and implemented for the Eclipse platform, and how developers shall use the new VizzAnalyzer version.

Abstract:

L’objectif de ce travail est la modélisation du gout ; plus précisément un des buts est la prédiction du profil sensoriel donne par un individu goutant un plat ; l'individu étant déjà connu par les résultats d'une série de dégustations exécutées auparavant. Mesurer le gout d'un plat est une activité combinée qui consiste d'une part à gouter le plat préparé et d'autre part à exprimer les perceptions éveillées. Le modèle d'un plat est lié à la recette à partir de laquelle il a été préparé. Ici ; les recettes sont exprimées dans un langage, cordon bleu, que nous avons développé, qui ressemble à un langage de programmation. Ainsi, les recettes sont représentées de façon manipulable et compréhensible. Pour mettre au point le modèle de gouteur nous avons utilisé la pratique de l'analyse sensorielle et nous utilise un certain nombre d'expériences dans le domaine des profils sensoriels. Les recettes, en cordon bleu, nous permettent de calculer ce que nous appelons le profil sensoriel de l'ordinateur. Le profil sensoriel (pour un plat) d'un gouteur est calculé à partir du profil sensoriel de l'ordinateur qui est perturbé en utilisant des connaissances préalables sur le gouteur. La comparaison des profils sensoriels estimés aux résultats expérimentaux (limites à 5 recettes et 11 assesseurs) indique qu'on peut les prédire avec une bonne précision, meilleure qu'une moyenne. De plus, l'analyse des résultats indique les profils sensoriels calculés par ordinateur sont de meilleurs prédicteurs que les individus eux-mêmes, dont les réponses changent avec le temps.

Abstract:

The thesis is a short novel, Food of the Gods, followed by a critical afterward and bibliography.
In Food, four graduate students, all to varying degrees perverse, come together in a cabalistic union. Bored and desperate, they begin to transgress a series of taboos, eventually performing communal acts of aggression, murder, and even cannibalism. Frank West, one of the students, is the novel's narrator and questionable moral center. It is through his confession that the four's "monstrous deeds" are filtered through.
Thematically, Food examines the potential for evil in individuals, as well as the group dynamics which encourage such acts of violence to erupt.
The required critical afterward looks at cannibalism as a literary trope in Food and Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness, discussing how the athropophagous act can be read as a symbolic one, simultaneously creating and destroying boundaries between various dichotomies (such as eater/eaten or self/other) related to notions of identity.

Hsp90 reveals phenotypic variation in the laboratory, but is Hsp90 depletion important in the wild? Recent work from Chen and Wagner in BMC Evolutionary Biology has discovered a naturally occurring Drosophila allele that downregulates Hsp90, creating sensitivity to cryptic genetic variation. Laboratory studies suggest that the exact magnitude of Hsp90 downregulation is important. Abstract:

The notion of tapu in eighteenth century Polynesia was all-pervasive: a system of fluid boundaries and thresholds in the landscape pertaining to islands, bodies and objects. The thesis aims to isolate a body of Austral god images from within the London Missionary Society collection and think through this corpus in terms of its materiality - complex assemblages of whalebone and ivory, wood, feathers, hair, tapa and sinnet bindings. Approaching these god images as tapu vessels which trap potency and confer mana, an analysis oftheir assembly and use by ritual' experts or tahu 'a, allows us to explore the way in which they were specifically designed to breach thresholds during ritual procedure. The collection is also significant as amaterial index of the dramatic sociopolitical and cultural shifts which followed the establishment of the London Missionary Society in the region. Critical analysis of missionary sources within the archive allows us to recover aspects of the complex encounters between islanders and missionaries which were often fraught, tense and certainly volatile. Details ofthe acquisition of these god images by London missionaries in the first two decades ofthe nineteenth century allows us to reconfigure the parameters of a series of accepted assumptions about idolatry and iconoclasm in central Polynesia and contests the notion that the conversion of the Austral Islands in particular was a straightforward transition to Christianity. Having established a set ofhistorical and contemporary frameworks for understanding these objects, the thesis finally explores the series of distinct thresholds through which these objects have moved since they were collected and sent to England and thinks about how contemporary display can be used as a critical means of recovery. In this way objects, their histories and display become a means ofre-addressing the missionary encounter in all its rich complexity allowing us to re-assess its resonance for Polynesians and Europeans today.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis have been performed at JIT Mech in Robertsfors. JIT Mech is one of a few companys in Sweden that is working with aluminum welding on thick materials. The background to this bachelor thesis is the problems caused when welding thick aluminum compared to welding on thin aluminum. The work positions is tearing on the workers and because of that JIT Mech is interested in mechanizing the production. The purpose of the bachelor thesis is to look at different weldingproducts that on different levels would mechanize the welding production. The purpose of the preliminary study is to gain a basis for furthering the efficiency of the aluminum welding process to increase profitability, as well as improving the working environment for staff working in hot and uncomfortable situations. To solve the task, an observation study of production, as well as the interview of welders and supplier of the products have been made. A theory is written to review how aluminum welding works and explain what is problematic with it. The comparison of the products is made with the greatest importance to how much the work environment can be improved depending on the level of mechanical welding equipment. A brief description of the products has been made, then a more detailed description of how much the products would change and improve welding production and remove static and weary workpositions for the welders compared with the current situation. Advantages and disadvantages have been developed for the welding products that gives a picture of how much they would improve the production. The conclusion was made that Fronius Flextrack 45 Welding Carriage is the best option for JIT Mech to invest in, as it improves the working environment while being the most affordable. At the beginning of the work, it was planned to evaluate more products what was then impolemented, but after the project it was limited to only three products to simply keep the work within the timeframe. An important part of the welding process is to keep the weld hot throughout the welding to avoid tension and cracks in the material. It is not included in the evaluation as it is difficult to change that process. It became clear that there is no product at the moment that would completely automate the aluminum welding, but mechanizing the welding is still a big improvement. To get acquainted with this work taught me a lot about the thought process of development and investment to improve production, and hopefully my opinions can be a tool for future investment for JIT Mech.

A presente dissertação consiste em um estudo do romance Deuses americanos de Neil Gaiman levando em consideração suas conexões a outros textos bem como inserções de diversos textos provenientes de outros trabalhos na prosa do romance. A proposta de leitura do texto de Gaiman segundo este trabalho utiliza os conceitos de intertextualidade e arquétipos de forma a analisar a relação entre a trama de Deuses americanos às várias utilizações de textos cuja escrita “original” não é atribuída ao autor do livro inseridos (ou referenciados) na prosa do romance. Embora o objeto de estudo seja comumente visto como um livro difícil de ser categorizado dentre de um certo gênero, a proposta desta dissertação é demonstrar que o movimento e o fluxo contínuo de discursos (textos) e estilos na prosa do romance remonta a uma visão de um estrangeiro sobre os Estados Unidos e como o país foi criado: ou seja, que ele é não somente um ponto geográfico de confluência de muitos povos, mas também de muitas crenças e culturas que, de um modo ou outro, trouxeram os seus deuses consigo. A análise do uso de intertextos, intratextos e arquétipos no romance está estruturada em três capítulos centrais: o primeiro contextualiza os mitos que aparecem no romance e discute a questão de gênero literário do livro, além do conceito de América no texto de Gaiman. O segundo capítulo examina o uso de mitos por Gaiman em relação a outros trabalhos, tanto os manuscritos antigos de crenças pagãs quanto instâncias mais modernas de mito e alegoria, além de estudar as conexões entre Deuses americanos e outros textos escritos por Gaiman de acordo com o conceito de intratextualidade proposto por Affonso de Sant’Anna. Por fim, o terceiro capítulo se concentra no uso pontual de intertextos no romance, organizando-os entre alusões literárias, referências à cultura pop, além de estudar o conflito entre a era digital e o antigo reinado da fé religiosa, sem deixar de investigar o uso de arquétipos e apropriação na prosa do romance. O trabalho, assim, tem como objetivo verificar a alegação de que a qualidade intertextual do romance é essencial tendo em vista sua trama e cenário, bem como a afirmação de que ele redefine o conceito da América do final dos anos 90 como um espaço multicultural, dinâmico e mítico.
This thesis consists of a study of Neil Gaiman’s American Gods in the light of its connections to other texts as well as the punctual insertions of various texts from other works in the novel’s prose. The proposed reading of Gaiman’s text employs the concepts of intertextuality and archetypes in order to further analyze the relation of the plot of American Gods to the various uses of texts - that were not originally written by the book’s author – which are inserted (or alluded to) in the novel’s prose. Although the object of study is generally seen as a book that is hard to brand within a certain genre, this thesis’ approach to the novel demonstrates that movement and the continuous flow of speeches (texts) and styles in the novel’s prose comprises an outsider’s view of America and how the country came into existence – that is, that it is the geographical conflux not only of many peoples, but also of many beliefs and cultures, which in some way or other brought their gods with them. This examination of the use of intertexts, intratexts and archetypes in the novel is structured in three main chapters: The first chapter contextualizes the myths that appear in the novel and discusses the issues of genre and the concept of America in Gaiman’s text. The second chapter analyzes Gaiman’s use of myths in relation to other works – the original manuscripts of ancient beliefs as well as modern instances of myth and allegory – along with the connections between American Gods and Gaiman’s other works according to Affonso de Sant’Anna’s concept of intratextuality. Finally, the third chapter focuses on the punctual uses of intertexts in the novel, breaking them down into literary allusions, references to pop culture and the conflict between the digital era and the age of religious faith, and the use of archetypes and appropriation in the novel’s prose. At the end of the work, I aim to assert my belief that the intertextual nature of the novel is essential to its plot and setting, and re-defines the concept of late-90’s/early 2000’s America as a multicultural, dynamic mythical space.

Abstract:

Gods, Have Merced! chronicles the struggle of Jose Merced, a Santeria priest, with the city of Euless, Texas, where he has been residing for 17 years in an effort to overrule an ordinance that bans the most critical element of his faith: animal sacrifice. As the city officials justify the ban on the basis of public health, Merced thinks he is merely a victim of selective code enforcement aimed a restricting his freedom of religion. Local and national media covered the lawsuit he filed against the City of Euless, and Merced seems ready to take the fight over animal sacrifice to the United States Supreme Court. He wants American justice to give his African-originated religion recognized in a city where people seem uneasy about a practice that brings back the historic fears of Voodoo and its popularly assumed malefic practices. The film explores the complex structure of Santeria, its African roots, its renaissance in the Americas and the very controversial issue of animal sacrifice in the US.

Jardins botânicos são instituições que visam a pesquisa, o estudo e a conservação vegetal, e estão cada vez mais abertas ao público. O Jardim Botânico do Rio de Janeiro, uma das mais antigas instituições científicas do país, tem na dimensão educativa um importante elo de ligação com o público. As escolas são parte significativa do universo de visitantes, que a cada ano e para a qual, foram criados projetos específicos de educação ambiental. Este estudo teve por objetivo examinar as relações do Jardim Botânico do Rio de Janeiro com o público escolar, através de observações de práticas educativas desenvolvidas na instituição, e de entrevistas realizadas nas escolas, com professores que levam suas turmas para visitas ao Jardim. Os dados obtidos na pesquisa permitem identificar questões que favorecem e outras que dificultam a aproximação entre esses dois universos, Jardim e escola, o que pode contribuir para a construção de uma possível parceria.
Botanical Gardens are institutions increasingly open to a public that seeks to study and preserve flora. The Botanical Garden of Rio de Janeiro, one of the oldest scientific institutions in Brazil, has created an important bond with the public through its educational activities. Schools, for which specific environmental educational projects have been created, are a significant portion of the universe of visitors, which is increasing every year. The present study has the purpose of examining the relationship between the Botanical Garden and the school public, by means of observation of the educational practices developed by the institution, together with interviews conducted with the teachers who bring their students to the Garden. The data obtained in the research allowed the identification of elements that favor, as well as those that hinder, the approximation of these two universes, The Botanical Garden and the school, thus contributing to the development of an effective partnership.

Abstract:

Heart failure (HF) and gout are common medical conditions that lead to significant morbidity and mortality in Canada and the US. We conducted a population-based nested case-control study to investigate the associations between gout, allopurinol use and HF outcomes using administrative data from the province of Quebec. Our analysis demonstrates that a history of gout is associated with increased HF readmission and death in HF patients (adjusted RR 1.63; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.48-1.80). We also show that chronic allopurinol use, a common medication for gout, is associated with reductions in adverse outcomes in HF patients with a history of gout (adjusted RR 0.69, 95% CI 0.60-0.79). Due to the observational nature of our study, residual confounding due to unknown or unmeasured confounding could still bias our findings. Herein, we present a novel method to estimate and control for such confounding by estimating the confounding risk ratio during the null induction time. Use of this method is illustrated using an example from the literature and we discuss the assumptions, limitations and statistical considerations of our method.
L'insuffisance cardiaque (IC) et la goutte sont des conditions médicales fréquentes qui sont des causes importantes de morbidité et de mortalité au Canada et aux États-Unis. Nous avons entrepris une étude populationelle « case-control » avec des données administratives de la province du Québec pour investiguer l'association entre la goutte ou l'allopurinol avec le prognostic de l'IC. Notre analyse démontre qu'un antécedent de goutte est associé à une hausse du taux de réadmissions à l'hôpital pour l'IC et une augmentation de la mortalité parmi les patients avec IC (RR ajusté 1.63; 95% CI 1.48-1.80). Cependant, nous demontrons que la prise d'allopurinol est associée à une réduction de la réadmission à l'hôpital pour IC et une diminution de la mortalité (RR ajusté 0.69, 95% CI 0.60-0.79). Comme notre étude est observationelle, les facteurs confondants qui ne sont pas disponibles ou qui sont inconnus peuvent biaiser nos résultats. Nous présentons une nouvelle méthode qui permet l'estimation et le contrôle de ces facteurs confondants basée sur l'estimation du « confounding rate ratio ». Nous présentons un example utilisant cette nouvelle méthode, et nous discutons les suppositions, les limitations et les considérations statistiques de cette méthode.

We study relations between special elliptic isometries in the complex hyperbolic plane. A special elliptic isometry can be seen as a rotation around a fixed axis (a complex geodesic). Such an isometry is determined by specifying a nonisotropic point p (the polar point to the fixed axis) and a unitary complex number a, the angle of the isometry. Un grand nombre de données expérimentales sur le système gustatif périphérique suggèrent l'existence de sites récepteurs multiples, de faible affinité et de faible spécificité, responsables de la détection et de la discrimination parfaite d'un nombre illimité de molécules organiques. Selon cette hypothèse, un site récepteur gustatif peut lier de nombreuses molécules, de même qu'une molécule peut interagir avec plusieurs types de sites récepteurs. L'analyse statistique des estimations d'intensité, réalisées par plusieurs dizaines de sujets humains pour diverses molécules, permet de calculer des distances intermoléculaires biologiques, deux molécules «étant d'autant plus proches qu'elles interagissent avec des sites récepteurs communs. Au cours de cette étude, les propriétés de liaison hydrogène et d'interaction hydrophobe ont été cartographiées sur la surface d'accessibilité au solvant de 14 molécules organiques sapides, afin d'identifier des motifs communs a plusieurs molécules, potentiellement complémentaires de certains sites récepteurs gustatifs. Dans ce but, les 14 molécules ont été découpées en 240 fragments, chacun possédant en moyenne 3 zones d'interactions potentielles. Un indice de correspondance à été défini pour évaluer l'analogie de deux fragments correctement superposés. Les 75 fragments les plus représentatifs des 14 molécules ont tous été superposés deux à deux. Le tri du résultat des 2775 comparaisons a permis de déterminer 12 groupes distincts de fragments. Ces 12 types de fragments ont été utilisés pour calculer des distances intermoléculaires structurales. Nous avons alors recherché la combinaison de fragments réalisant le meilleur accord entre les distances biologiques et les distances structurales. Le résultat final est un sous-ensemble de 7 types de fragments parmi les 12, rendant au mieux compte des distances intermoléculaires biologiques (p<0,001). Ces 7 types de fragments sont de bons candidats pour être complémentaires d'autant de sites récepteurs gustatifs distincts

Questa tesi si propone di analizzare la raccolta poetica The Wind Among the Reeds del poeta anglo-irlandese William Butler Yeats, pubblicata per la prima volta nel 1899. I primi tre capitoli intendono contestualizzare la raccolta in relazione alla vita e all’opera di Yeats, al periodo che avrebbe portato alla sua maturazione e pubblicazione, e alla critica yeatsiana, la quale ha spesso considerato The Wind Among the Reeds e la così detta “early poetry” di inferiore livello artistico rispetto alla “mature poetry” novecentesca. Nel quarto ed ultimo capitolo – che costituisce altresì il fulcro dell’intero lavoro – ci si è soffermati sull’analisi testuale della raccolta. Questa sezione ha messo in evidenza il profondo legame tra l’apparato esterno e la struttura interna del (macro)testo, sottolineando l’importanza di ogni singolo elemento della raccolta nel concorrere alla coerenza semantica e simbolica di un’opera d’arte che costituisce un esempio della maestria poetica yeatsiana.
This dissertation deals with an analysis of the poetry collection The Wind Among the Reeds written by the Anglo-Irish poet William Butler Yeats and published for the first time in 1899. The first three chapters aim to contextualize the collection within Yeats’s life and work, the period leading to its development and publication, and the yeatsian criticism that often regarded The Wind Among the Reeds and the so called “early poetry” as a minor aspect of Yeats’s literary production, if compared to “the mature poetry” of the ‘Nineties. In the fourth and last chapter – which constitutes the core of the whole research – we focused on the textual analysis of the collection. This section has shown the deep relation between the external and internal structure of the text, underlying the relevance of all the elements constituting the collection and establishing the semantic and symbolic coherence of a work of art which is representative of Yeats’s poetic virtuosity.

Fantasy Realization Theory (Oettingen 1996) states that people can dwell on their negative reality, fantasize about a positive future, or mentally compare each. When individuals mentally compare, commitment to the goal of achieving their fantasy is influenced by expectations for goal attainability. Consistent with the attitude literature, such expectations can be influenced by the quality of arguments within an advertisement. Merging these ideas, we predicted and found that participants' attitudes toward purchasing a car were influenced by the quality of arguments presented in an advertisement for a car dealership, but only if they mentally compared fantasies and reality.

Die Universitätsbibliothek Regensburg zeichnet sich seit Ihrer Gründung Mitte der 1960er Jahre durch innovative Servicedienstleistungen aus, darunter die Elektronische Zeitschriftenbibliothek (EZB), das Datenbank-Informationssystem (DBIS) und die Regensburger Verbundklassifikation (RVK). Die älteste dieser bibliothekarischen Dienstleistungen ist die Regensburger Verbundklassifikation. Ursprünglich als reine „Haussystematik“ für die Belange der Universitätsbibliothek Regensburg entworfen und auf das damals in Bayern noch neue Konzept eines einschichtigen Bibliothekssystems ausgerichtet, entwickelte sich die RVK zum ersten Erfolgsmodell der Universitätsbibliothek Regensburg mit großer Breitenwirkung. Ein stetig wachsender Anwenderkreis (rund 130 Anwenderbibliotheken) im In- und deutschsprachigen Ausland (Österreich, Schweiz und auch Italien) sowie ein reges Interesse (dokumentiert über die RVK-Mailingliste und die RVK-Anwendertreffen) an der Weiterentwicklung der Systematik belegen dies eindrücklich. Ein Erfolgsfaktor liegt sicherlich auch in dem kooperativen Ansatz und dem damit verbundenen gemeinsamen Gestalten der Systematik – unter Vermittlung der RVK-Koordinierungsstelle an der Universitätsbibliothek Regensburg – begründet: dieser Ansatz findet sich auch in weiteren Leuchttürmen EZB und DBIS wieder. Die Umstellung auf eine webbasierte Darstellung im Rahmen des gleichnamigen DFG-Projekts in den Jahren 1995-1997 bedeutete den ersten großen Paradigmenwechsel in der Geschichte der RVK. Eine weitere Zäsur möchte die Universitätsbibliothek Regensburg nun mit ersten Schritten in Richtung „RVK goes Web 2.0.“ einläuten. Zunächst steht eine Neukonzeption des Webauftritts verbunden mit Elementen des Web 2.0. wie beispielsweise einem auf dem letzten Anwendertreffen als Desiderat genanntes Wiki zur Diskussion von allgemeinen Themen. Das Wiki soll primär dem einfachen Austausch von Informationen von für alle Anwenderbibliotheken relevanten Themen bieten, der Austausch über einzelne Notationen könnte über entsprechende Blogs (mit integrierten RSS-Feeds) verlaufen. In diesem Kontext wird auch die Möglichkeit der Personalisierung („My RVK“) angedacht. Auch im Bereich des noch nicht in allen Fachsystematiken bestehenden Registers soll als web 2.0.-Feature die Darstellung mittels „tag clouds“ integriert werden. Die Universitätsbibliothek Regensburg möchte mit der Weiterentwicklung der RVK-Online die internationale Relevanz der Systematik unterstreichen und die etablierte Marke RVK fördern.

This dissertation explores parent-gentrifiers’ lived experiences of the school-selection process, including the social networking and the influence of those social networks in their selection of schools. School choice and parent involvement are forms of social capital, and such social capital represents the results of social networking and parental agency. The unknown is how this scenario manifests itself in gentrifying parents’ school-selection process in Atlanta’s Kirkwood and Grant Park neighborhoods. Gentrifying children’s absence in urban public schools is of interest as residential areas integrate, while schools (re)segregate. The research paradigm is interpretivist as it investigates the qualitatively different ways in which people experience or think about a phenomenon (Marton, 1986). Purposive snowball sampling is used to reach 30 eligible participants in two neighborhoods. The methodological approach is qualitative phenomenographic interviews. The research found five options considered by parent-gentrifiers in the school-selection process that are consistent with the previous literature: public school, charter school, private school, homeschool and undecided/not yet. The forms of communication utilized in the social networking were face-to-face, phone, e-mail, social networking sites, and texting. Participants varied by work schedule, neighborhood communication infrastructure, and level of social network in their forms of communication. Parent-gentrifiers’ approaches to school selection included: activating agency, social networking, operating in social spaces, their social agenda with regard to diversity, and their educational agenda with regard to curriculum, instruction, and school characteristics. The results show that while parents espouse racial and socioeconomic diversity, their choices in the option-demand system in Grant Park resulted in racial segregation among the schools. In contrast, the lack of formal options in Kirkwood resulted in racial integration in the public elementary school. The actions interpreted and ideas constructed in the process of selecting schools as a parent-gentrifier are of practical value to district efforts to understand the urban middle-class school-selection process. In light of increasing school segregation and student attrition, continued urban revitalization efforts and the sustainability of those efforts for many major cities in the United States is highly dependent on their ability to regenerate and maintain quality schools that attract the middle-class.

Abstract:

This thesis argues that the iconography on Seleucid coins was created in order to appeal to the various ethnic groups within the empire and thereby reinforced the legitimacy of the dynasty. It first examines the iconography of Seleucus I and argues that as Seleucus became more secure in his rule he began to develop a new iconography that was a blend of Alexander’s and his own. This pattern changed under Antiochus I. He replaced the Zeus of Alexander and of Seleucus with Apollo-on-the-omphalos. At approximately the same time, a dynastic myth of descent from Apollo was created and promulgated. It is argued that in addition to the traditional view that Apollo was readily identifiable to the Greco-Macedonians within the empire he was also accessible to the Babylonians through the god Nabû and to the Persians as a Greek (or Macedonian) version of the reigning king. This ambiguity made Apollo an ideal figure to represent the multi-ethnic ruling house. This also explains the dynasty’s reluctance to deviate from the iconography established by Antiochus I. This thesis continues to explore the role of Apollo and other gods in creating an iconography which represented Seleucid power ending with the reign of Antiochus III. This thesis also incorporates the numismatic representations of the king as divine into the debate on ruler cult. This evidence suggests that the Seleucids may have had some form of ruler cult before the reign of Antiochus III.

Abstract:

Initially, a specific problem in the security of location is presented: that of allowing the subjects of a particular location-tracking system to retain control over the distribution of the information about their location. Prior work in the field of location hiding and traffic flow confidentiality is reviewed and discussed. The social constraints which make the problem interesting and relevant are described, and the trust models and goals of the parties involved in the application area are discussed. The particular set of trust models and goals of interest for the research presented is stated. The general nature of the problem, and the key difficulties in solving it, are identified. Several possible solutions are outlined. One of these solutions is chosen - the use of mix-based remailer networks, with some modifications - and the choice is justified with reference to the factors operating in the application area. The cryptographic mechanisms required to implement this solution are discussed, and protocols are proposed which satisfy the application's basic requirements for users' control over their own location tracking information. More sophisticated requirements are discussed and some examples of mechanisms that could be used to implement them are present, including an 'anonymous certificate of location'. An attempt at formal analysis of these protocols is made; existing formal methods are shown to be inadequate, and a new logic for the analysis of protocols is presented. The new logic is shown to be useful in general, but still not to be able to express fully the concepts required to analyse the protocols proposed here. The solution and protocols chosen are developed into a design for a practical system in the initial application area. The design has been partially implemented and tested. Measurements of the performance of this implementation of the practical system are presented and discussed.
