Abstract:
Immunostimulatory drugs in recent years are widely used in Parasitology. Also, homeopathic drugs such as Cina have anti-helmintic and immunostimulation properties. We studied the possibility of using immunostimulating and high dilutions drugs during parasitological disease treatment. Two experimental parasitological disease models (trichinelosis and cutaneous leishmaniosis) were used. Trichinellosis caused by gastrointestinal nematode Trichinella spiralis occurs in humans, domestic and wild animals. Leishmaniasis is a disease caused by parasites of Leishmania genus. It is spread by certain sandflies types bite. The disease can present in three main ways. We used 2 leishmania in vitro models and experimental mice cutaneous model. The cutaneous form presents skin ulcers, while the mucocutaneous form presents skin, mouth, and nose ulcers. For estimation of immunostimulatory efficacy, size of leishmanioma, presence of leishmania in the ulcer, and treatment time were analyzed. This study aimed at to assess the protective efficiency of homeopathic drug such as Cina C6cH and interferon 2 and inductors of interferons of types 1 and 2 interferon, against experimental trichinosis and leichmaniosis. An assay was carried out on 50 white outbred mice. These were divided into three groups of ten mice each. Group 1 was injected with interferon inductors (2.16 mg/mouse in 0.2 ml sterile saline, intramuscularly); group 2 - desoldering dissolved in water Cina C6cH one time a day per os. The group 3 received interferone-a2b; and the group 4 was injected 0.2 ml of sterile 0.9% NaCl. The group 5 was only for leishmaniasis. After a 48 hours regimen, the groups 1-3 were inoculated with a dose of 80 ± 5 units of T. spiralis larva per mouse. After 90 days of trichinellosis incubation, and during one year of leishmaniasis process the mice were euthanized and dissected for evaluation. Maximum protection was obtained in mice immunized with interferon-a2b and its stimulatory, as T. spiralis detected larvae in animals was 733.5±25.1 larva/animal. Cina C6cH immunized group presented 2840.5±183.3 larva/animal. This was less than control group (4485±430.6 larva/mouse). Also mice with leishmaniasis had fewer ulcers during treatment with immune stimulating. Ulcers sizes were 0.46+0.05 (group 3); 2.2 +0.5 (group 2), and 3.2+0.8 (group 5). Leishmanial amount in the ulcer was 3.1 +0.7(group 3), 3.6 +0.4 (group 2), and 3.7+0.3(goup 5). The time of the treatment in the 3-d group was 19.2+0.9 and more than 40 days in all group (2,4,5). So, based on this, we consider it advantageous to continue the study of immunostimulatory drugs in the complex treatment of trichinelosis and leishmaniosis.

Abstract:
AbstractObjectivesThe quality of management of hyperuricemia has remained sub-optimal owing to unavoidable toxicities, limitations, and dearth of novel advances. Homeopathy has remained under-researched in hyperuricemia. We investigated the clinical effectiveness of three treatment regimens – individualized homeopathy (IH), Urtica urens mother tincture (UUMT), and both (IH + UUMT) along with lifestyle modifications in a sample of 90 patients with hyperuricemia.MethodsAn open, randomized (1:1:1), 3 parallel arms (IH, UUMT, and IH + UUMT), pragmatic trial was conducted at National Institute of Homoeopathy, Kolkata. Outcome measures were serum uric acid (primary), Gout Assessment Questionnaire version 2 (GAQ2, secondary), and Measure Yourself Medical Outcome Profile version 2 (MYMOP2, secondary); all measured at baseline, and after 3 and 6 months. Intention- to-treat sample was analyzed to detect group differences by unpaired t tests.ResultsAttrition rate was 8.9% (IH: 3, UUMT: 3, IH + UUMT: 2). Groups were comparable at baseline. Reductions in serum uric acid over 3 months were comparatively higher (p=0.057) in the UUMT group than others, however, the differences were narrowed over 6 months (p=0.119). Per protocol analysis of serum uric acid level revealed similar trend of significantly higher reduction in the UUMT group than the other two (3 months: p=0.001; 6 months: p=0.007). No significant differences existed in reductions of GAQ2 scores among the three groups. Few significant differences were detected in MYMOP scores over 3 months favoring IH against others (symptom 2, p=0.001 and wellbeing score, p=0.002), and also over 6 months favoring IH + UUMT against others (symptom 1, p<0.001).ConclusionAlthough all three therapies showed similar improvements, the IH + UUMT group had more positive direction of effects than IH or UUMT alone; however, no definite conclusion could be arrived at. Further trials are warranted with larger sample size. Trial registration: CTRI/2018/05/014026.

Abstract:
Background: The word miasm means an infection. Hippocrates was the first who use the term "miasm" which has its origins in the Greek word for taint or fault. He anticipated that certain infectious diseases were transmitted to humans by air and water tainted by miasms. Hahnemann thought that the life power is infected by certain factors and this infection creates the disease. Dr. Hahnemann has recognized three special forms which he has designated as PSORA, SYCOSIS AND SYPHILIS. Which are recognized as ‘Miasm’ Objectives: The objective of the study is to understand the Expression of Sycosis miasm in Today’s Era. Methods: This Prospective study includes 50 cases that were randomly selected which had predominantly sycotic expression irrespective of age, sex and religion. The symptoms in the case were analyzed for the sycosis expressions. Investigation was carried out as and when required as per the case. The remedy was selected on the basis of totality of symptoms. The remedies were used in various potencies with repetition of doses as per the requirement of the case. The Homoeopathic remedies were selected from Standard Homoeopathic Pharmacy, Response was analyzed into 3 criteria: Mild Improvement, Moderate Improvement, Status quo, Left the treatment. Results: 50 cases of sycosis expression, both the genders of different age and different family background were analyzed and examined for response the homeopathic treatment. Expression of sycosis miasm was observed more in 31-40 years of age group. In general, sycosis predominantly seen in Male 26 cases. The common mental expression which was easily found out was dominating nature and desire for company and most peculiar was anger, which was expressed in different-different ways e.g., Anger at trifles, anger when contradicted, with abusive language or even throwing things when angry. In physical expression craving for such as sweets and spices. This miasm has aggravation at night in the research it is observed majority complaints of sycosis aggravated at night. The prominent disease conditions observed were hypertension 16%, renal calculi 12%, and diabetes mellitus 9%, hemorrhoids and hypothyroidism 7%, and gout, BPH, DNS, ovarian cyst, fibroids 5% respectively. The medicines selected on the totality of symptoms including miasmatic expression gave moderate improvement in 32% of cases where as mild improvement was observed in 40% of cases. The medicine found to be effective were anti-sycotic medicines like Medorrhinum, Nat. mur, Calc.carb, Apis etc. Lycopodium was prescribed in 20% of cases. Conclusion: From our study we would like to conclude that sycosis is flourishing miasm in many directions in this world. Along with it, it is most mischievous and difficult to conclude on mental aspect. Because we cannot grab sycotic person from their mind. Here I have made an effort to find out the common features of sycosis in this era which we can effortlessly find out and get from people. Keywords: miasm, sycosis

Abstract:
Abstract Background Cineraria maritima has a long history of use in the treatment of cataract and other eye-related problems in the homeopathic system of medicines. High oxidative stress is one of the major underlying causes of cataract which results in the precipitation of natural protein present in the lenses with aging. This research has been carried out to determine the anti-cataract activity of C. maritima by performing various antioxidant techniques such as 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl, nitric oxide, hydrogen peroxide, and studies in oxidative stress–induced ex vivo cataract model. Results Results of the study conducted in the ethanolic extract of aerial parts (leaves and stems) of C. maritima revealed the presence of various phytoconstituents such as alkaloids, phenols, flavonoids, etc. Total phenol and total flavonoid content was found to be 6.31 ± 0.06 % w/w and 2.14 ± 0.09% w/w respectively, which revealed that the plant contains a good amount of these compounds and hence possesses good antioxidant activity. Furthermore, IC50 values obtained from all the methods gave strong evidence regarding the antioxidant potential of this plant. Anti-cataract activity was also investigated using goat eye lenses and promising results were obtained which speak voluminously about its anti-cataract potential and support its well-prescribed use. Conclusion Results obtained with this study clearly supported the significant antioxidant potential and anti-cataract activity of this plant. Further, this plant demands great attention for the development of suitable novel dosage forms for the effective treatment of cataract.

Abstract:

This research was conducted to determine the effect of homoeopathic treatment on acute gout patients. Putterman (1994) conducted a research study on the effect of the homoeopathic remedy Colchicum autumnale in gout, and found partial improvement in the clinical picture of gout. No research has been conducted in South Africa on the efficacy of homoeopathic medicines in acute gout patients. This study focused on the homoeopathic Law of Similars, where a single most similar homoeopathic remedy was chosen according to the unique characteristic symptoms displayed by each participant suffering with acute gout. This was a qualitative study that used ten subjects who presented within five days of acute gout and participated in the fifteen-day study period. Participants that complied with the American College of Rheumatology (formerly American Rheumatism Association, ACR) criteria for gout were selected. Serum uric acid tests were taken on day 0 and day 6 to assess hyperuricemia. On day 0 a thorough case history and examination was taken followed by administration of the indicated remedy. Treatment efficacy was evaluated on day 1, 3 and 6, based on daily subjective impression of participant involvement, objective analysis and comparative analysis of serum uric acid. Re-examination for relapses or rebound attacks followed on day 15. In a study using allopathic remedies in acute gout, resolution of all acute gout symptoms occurred at an average of 8 days using indomethacin and 7 days using triamcinolone (Alloway et. al., 1993). In this study using homoeopathic similimum treatment, resolution of all acute gout symptoms occurred at an average of 6 days. One episode of a rebound gout attack occurred and serum uric acid decreased in 80% of patients. Homoeopathic similimum prescribing is an effective alternative treatment for acute gout. Although more research is required, the preliminary findings of this study suggest that the correct homoeopathic similimum treatment is an effective treatment for the symptoms of acute gout.

Abstract:
Dissertation thesis submitted in partial compliance with the requirements for the Master's degree in Technology: Homoeopathy, Technikon Natal, 2001.
The aim of this placebo-controlled study was to investigate the homoeopathic simillimum treatment of acute arthritis in primary gout in terms of the illness intrusiveness scale, blood uric acid levels using the uricase conversion method as well as the Acupulse Homeostat machine. For this study 30 patients suffering from primary gout were required. The patients were obtained by advertising in local newspapers and at retirement homes. Patients were included in the study if they presented with six of the seven criteria taken from the American Rheumatism Association's criteria for acute arthritis of primary gout. The patients were randomly divided into two groups: a treatment group, receiving homoeopathic simillimum treatment and a control group, receiving a placebo. Two follow-up consultations were scheduled at two week intervals. Data was obtained by means of a questionnaire (completed by the patient), readings from the Acupulse homeostat machine and a blood uric acid test. This data was collected at all three consultations. Data entry and analysis was done using the SPSS statistical package. Due to the small sample size, data obtained from the questionnaire was statistically analyzed using non-parametric methods. The Mann-Whitney Unpaired Test was done to compare the treatment and placebo groups. Results showed that there was no significant difference between the groups. The Wilcoxon's Signed Rank Test was done to compare data within groups. The only significant difference was found within the treatment group between the first and second consultations as well as the first and third consultations. There was significant improvement with regard to active recreation. The tests were performed at a = 5% level of significance. Data obtained from the Acupulse Homeostat machine as well as the blood tests were analyzed using parametric tests because of the fact that they were continuous variables (regardless of the small sample size per group). In the case of both variables, comparison between the treatment and placebo group was made using the Two-Sample Paired T-Test and comparison within groups
