Abstract:
The comprehensive development in Saudi Arabia forced the private sector to bring foreign employees to assist in accomplishing this development. The number of foreign employees reached to six million people according to the late statistics. This huge number of people exerted pressure on the public free medical facilities that forced the government to issue a decree that instructs private sector to use private medical facilities for their foreign employees. The private sector dealt with this decree in different ways according to the perception of the company from providing full medical coverage for their employees to providing nothing. This has created a problem to many foreigners in which they have to pay for their medical needs. The government, then, issued a new decree that is the mandatory medical insurance. This decree requires the private sector to provide full medical coverage for their foreign employees. This decree will have an impact on the construction companies (contractors) and the cost of the construction projects. This paper presents results of a study conducted to identify the impact of the mandatory medical insurance on the construction contractors in Saudi Arabia. The methodology used was to prepare a questionnaire that investigates the objectives of this study and distributes it to the contractors. The questionnaire includes many aspects among them the impact of this decree on the company performance and the competition between contractors; how this extra expense being dealt with; and the impact on the employee. The questionnaires were distributed to 150 construction contractors and 90 questionnaires were collected. Results of the study reveal the impact of the mandatory medical insurance on the construction contractors in general and according to their classifications. In addition, the study presents the current practice implemented by contractors to provide medical care for their foreign employees.

Abstract:
The success of a company needs employees who are competent, experienced and strong. Islamic insurance companies certainly require employees who have knowledge about insurance in accordance with Islamic sharia principles. In the case of the Islamic insurance company Bumi Putera Palembang in 2015 to 2016 there are 40 insurance policyholders who worked in a government agency to terminate the employment relationship between the insurance and policyholders. This is because there is no transparency related to monthly installment payments that should be proven by a deposit or proof of receipt of payment in full by the field agent to the policy holder. This is not in line with the principles of Islamic insurance, namely avoiding the elements of gharar, maysir and usury. Islam emphasizes aspects of justice, likes and likes and togetherness faces risks in every effort and investment pioneered. This aspect is the concept offer to replace gharar, maysir and riba that have been happening in conventional institutions. The focus of research is on the competency of agents (wakalah) in the sharia Islamic Bumi Putera insurance company in the city of Palembang. The result is obtained from the conclusions of six indicators and evidenced by the table of productive reports of agents related to product marketing that human resources in agents /wakalah Bumi Putera Syariah Life Insurance have not described competency and professionalism. This can be seen from the lack of insurance products sold, attitudes to field issues and the achievement of the target customers determined by the company.

Abstract:
Research on creativity as an attitude, thinking ability, and creative behavior developed in the education sphere is profoundly related to positive things. Meanwhile, the research for negative creativity or the allegedly dark side of creativity is still very limited both in education and in the industrial world. This study examines the influence of internal factors (personality and intelligence) and external factors (organizational climate and organizational culture) on positive and negative creativity. The sample comprised 180 government employees in a ministry office and 150 private employees at a well-known insurance company in Jakarta. The results of this study show that for government employees, positive creativity mainly influenced by internal factors, namely the openness personality type, and none of the external factors affects. Simultaneously, negative creativity influenced by external factors, particularly the goal-oriented organizational climate, and none of the internal factors affects. On the other hand, private employees have various positive creativity influenced by internal factors (such as extraversion personality and neuroticism) and also external factors (the culture of cooperation and customer orientation). In contrast, negative creativity influenced by external factors of the organization, specifically the internal process that runs within the organization.

Abstract:
Abstract Introduction There has been a rise in workplace health promotion programs (WHPP)’s in the U.S., designed to improve a variety of employee health behaviors such as exercise and nutrition. Yet, relatively few focus on the third pillar of health: Sleep. Methods The CDC collected data from a nationally-representative cohort of companies in 2017. Participants in this Workplace Health in America study completed online surveys reporting the type of WHPP offerings at their worksite and characteristics of their worksite, including occupational field (e.g., agriculture, management, wholesale/retail), workforce size (i.e., small: <100; moderate: 100-499; and large: 500+) and company type (e.g., non-profit, profit-private, profit-public, government). We identified factors associated with an increased likelihood of sleep-focused WHPP using logistic regression adjusted for company size and type. Analyses were weighted for nationally-representative estimates. Results Of the N=2,843 companies that provided information, N=261 (11.74%) reported having a sleep program. Worksites with large workforces (OR=4.8, p<0.0005), for-profit public companies (OR=9.0, p<0.0005), in wholesale/retail (OR=3.8, p<0.0005), and those with employer-subsidized full health insurance (OR=12.7, p<0.0005) were more likely to have a sleep-focused WHPP. Other predictors included more long-standing WHPP programs (6 years, OR=4.4, p<0.0005), the presence of employee health in the company’s mission (OR=4.5, p<0.0005), leadership buy-in (OR=3.5, p=0.007), and an annual health promotion budget >$50,000 (OR=11.3, p<0.0005). Conclusion In general, workplaces with higher budgets, more well-established health promotion programs, and a mission to promote workplace health are more likely to include a sleep program. Also, publicly-traded companies and government were more likely than private companies to have a sleep program. Future research may consider defining barriers among small business and non-profit organizations for implementing sleep-focused workplace health programs. Support T32HL007901

AbstractObjectiveTo examine whether a worksite nutrition programme using a low-fat vegan diet could significantly improve nutritional intake.DesignAt two corporate sites of the Government Employees Insurance Company, employees who were either overweight (BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2) and/or had type 2 diabetes participated in a 22-week worksite-based dietary intervention study.SettingAt the intervention site, participants were asked to follow a low-fat vegan diet and participate in weekly group meetings that included instruction and group support (intervention group). At the control site, participants received no instruction (control group). At weeks 0 and 22, participants completed 3 d dietary records to assess energy and nutrient intake.SubjectsA total of 109 participants (sixty-five intervention and forty-four control).ResultsIn the intervention group, reported intake of total fat, trans fat, saturated fat and cholesterol decreased significantly (P ≤ 0·001), as did energy and protein (P = 0·01), and vitamin B12 (P = 0·002), compared with the control group. Intake (exclusive of any use of nutritional supplements) of carbohydrate, fibre, vitamin C, magnesium and potassium increased significantly (P ≤ 0·0001), as did that for β-carotene (P = 0·0004), total vitamin A activity (P = 0·004), vitamin K (P = 0·01) and sodium (P = 0·04) in the intervention group, compared with the control group.ConclusionsThe present study suggests that a worksite vegan nutrition programme increases intakes of protective nutrients, such as fibre, folate and vitamin C, and decreases intakes of total fat, saturated fat and cholesterol.

Abstract:
Lack of awareness of workers is one of the factors causing work accidents that have occurred. This cannot be done as it should, so there are still frequent work accidents involving construction project workers. In the Bogor region itself, the issue of work safety is also a special concern of the government in realizing development. The method used by the author in this study is a descriptive legal normative research method, the implementation of work safety protection for construction project workers in Bogor City is still not running optimally, this is due to the absence of an agreement between workers and employers. Because in general construction project workers only have a working relationship with third parties outside the construction company. So that the participation of the government is needed to resolve work safety issues for construction project workers. The legal consequence arising from the absence of a work agreement for construction project workers is that they do not receive work health and safety insurance, other than that the wages received do not correspond to what has been provided by the company, because there is a third party tasked with coordinating these workers, so construction project workers do not have legal protection as mandated by law.

Abstract:
AbstractRecent media reports have revealed a substantial number of highly-paid senior civil servants and BBC presenters have been using “off payroll” arrangements and personal services companies to reduce the tax paid on their earnings. This article examines the tax and National Insurance contribution (NIC) savings that can be had by carrying on economic activity through a company rather than as an unincorporated business or an employee. These savings derive from a combination of favourable tax and NIC rates on companies, and can be further increased through family income-splitting arrangements, as witnessed in the case of Jones v Garnett. Several possible reforms to address the distortions and inequity in the present tax and NIC regimes in favour of companies are considered, including amendments to the IR35 “disguised employment” regime and the anti-income-splitting rules known as the settlement provisions. Applying the new statutory general anti-abuse rule, which the Government plans to introduce in Finance Act 2013, is another possible approach. The preferred option, however, is to deal with the root problem and pursue closer alignment of the tax and NIC treatment of activity carried on in different legal forms.

Abstract:
Continuous changes along with the increased pressure to perform may result in feelings of distrust, strain in interpersonal relations, psychological strain, fatigue and tension, all affecting the well-being of employees. Tracking and addressing the effectiveness of employees in the work context in areas that could impact on the standard of their services is important. Burnout and work engagement are specific focus areas in this regard. To measure burnout and work engagement, it is important to use reliable and valid instruments. However, there is a lack of empirical research systematically investigating burnout and work engagement in South Africa, as well as serious limitations, including poorly designed studies, a lack of sophisticated statistical analyses and poorly controlled studies. Furthermore, South Africa is a multicultural society and therefore, when burnout and work engagement measures are applied to different cultural groups, issues of equivalence become important. The objectives of this study were to standardise the MBI-GS and UWES for employees in an insurance company and to determine equivalence for each instrument, to determine the occupational stressors experienced and demographic differences in terms of the experience of occupational stressors and to test a causal model of work wellness consisting of burnout, work engagement, job demands, job resources, health, optimism and intention to leave. The research method for each of the three articles consists of a brief literature review and an empirical study. A cross-sectional survey design was used. An availability sample (N = 613) fiom employees in an insurance company was taken. The Maslach Burnout Inventory - General Survey (MBI-GS), Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES), Life Orientation Test - Revised (LOT-R), An Organisational Stress Screening Tool (ASSET), Job Characteristics Scale (JCS) and a biographical questionnaire were administered. The statistical analysis was carried out with the help of the SAS program and AMOS. The statistical methods utilised in the three articles consisted of descriptive statistics, Cronbach alpha coefficients, inter-item correlations, Pearson product-moment correlation coefficients and structural equation modelling methods. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was also utilised to determine differences between the subgroups of the sample. Structural equation modelling confirmed a three-factor model of burnout, consisting of exhaustion, cynicism and professional efficacy. The three-factor model of work engagement represented the data quite well after certain items had been replaced due to semantic differences. The MBI-GS and UWES both showed acceptable internal consistencies. Construct equivalence for different language groups were confumed for the MBI-GS and UWES. The continuous exposure to things like change, competitiveness and rivalry may result in feelings of stress. Stress may have a negative impact on the health and well-being of individuals. Physical and psychological ill health was found to be the major outcome of stress for employees. Commitment moderated the effect of occupational stress on ill health. Specific occupational stressors indicated in an insurance company had to do with performance management, job characteristics, redundancy of skills and remuneration. Biographical factors (i.e. department, level, years' experience) had an impact on the experience of occupational stressors. A one-factor, four-factor and three-factor wellness model was tested. The three-factor model, comprising exhaustion and cynicism loading on burnout and a combined work engagement (vigour and dedication) dimension, provided the best fit with the data. The causal model of work wellness provides support for the COBE model, assuming job demands and job resources. A lack of job resources increases the levels of burnout of employees, as well as the intention to leave the organisation. The availability of job resources increases the levels of work engagement. Employees who experience excessive workloads are likely to develop high levels of burnout which, in turn, may lead to health problems. Recommendations for future research were made.

Seery, Georgina. "How individual differences influence employees' experiences of major organisational change in a large UK insurance company." Thesis, Cranfield University, 2002. http://dspace.lib.cranfield.ac.uk/handle/1826/4592.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines employees' experiences of major organisational change, with an emphasis upon examining how the personality traits Neuroticism and Extraversion, and the personality disposition Work Locus of Control, influence these experiences. The perspective of employees, who are the main recipients of major change initiatives, is not well represented in the literature. Also, despite calls for research that addresses process and context, existing literature on the role of individual differences in relation to organisational change tends to be aprocessual and acontextual. The present research seeks to overcome these shortcomings by adopting a longitudinal, real-time, qualitative approach. The research elicited employees' perceptions of change as a major change programme unfolded, and examined emerging patterns of employees' experiences in relation to contextual and individual difference factors. The research presents a picture of organisational change as unpredictable and emergent. The research findings demonstrate that employees' experiences of change are varied and suggest that these experiences are influenced by many factors at the personal, group and organisational levels. The research shows that a change 'event' will elicit different types of feelings and responses from the same individual over time, as the event unfolds. Patterns of experience were found which suggested that personality factors, and combinations of these factors, influenced the way aspects of change were perceived by employees, and these perceptions appeared to influence employees' responses to change. The present research contributes towards the change management literature by confirming the view that change is 'messy', emergent and unpredictable, and by presenting evidence to show how employees contribute towards the emergent nature of this process. The research contributes towards the work psychology literature by adopting an approach that contextualises research participants' responses, and presents an account of change as an unfolding process. By focusing upon perceptions, the research is able to offer explanations of how individual differences might influence employees' experiences of major organisational change.

Botha, Leon Gerhard. "The psychological contract and job insecurity of temporary employees contracted to a health insurance company / by L.G. Botha." Thesis, North-West University, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/689.

Full text
Abstract:
Extensive research on the experience of the psychological contract and job insecurity of temporary employees has taken place internationally. However, no studies were conducted in South Africa focusing on the psychological contract and job insecurity of temporary staff employed by a Temporary Employment Service Provider. There has been a proliferation of firms involved in Temporary Employment Services since 1983 in South Africa and the industry has grown exponentially since 1996. To accomplish the objectives of this article, literature and empirical research was used. A survey questionnaire was used to assess the demographic information and to measure the experience of the psychological contract and job insecurity as to determine the correlation and difference in experience by temporary personnel in a South African health insurance company. A cross-sectional design was used to asses interrelationships among variables within the target population (N= 149). The psychological contract questionnaire determined the personnel's experience of specifically employer obligations. Further objectives included determining the degree to which the psychological contract is related to job insecurity levels, their involuntary or voluntary status and their demography. A further objective was to make recommendations regarding the same to the Temporary Employment Industry. The results showed that work promises, work atmosphere promises and management promises were largely perceived to be kept and organisational promises were half kept. Factors of job insecurity related strongly to factors of the psychological contract, particularly job insecurity factors relating to threats to present tenure and optimism of future tenure. The literature study has shown that voluntary status has a moderating effect on job insecurity but the empirical study has shown that this effect was marginal in this case study. Demography was not found to show a significant difference on the employees' psychological contract and only showed a relation to job insecurity on face value. Several recommendations related to the findings were made to Temporary Employment Service Providers.

Abstract:
With more than 400 companies to choose between, the Swedish insurance sector is gigantic. The competition is fierce, and the insurance companies have to fight over customers and market shares. Our purpose with this dissertation is to analyze which insurance relevant factors determine which company the private consumer chooses. This dissertation has a quantitative research method, a positivistic philosophy and a deductive approach. Our study indicates that the following factors have a positive influence on insurers in their selection of insurance companies : Low price, high quality insurance service, professional staff, high accessibility and strong trademarks. Bank employees also tend to have influence on insurers in their selection of insurance companies. This study selectively focuses on the Swedish market, leaving room for further research in a global perspective. Additional research regarding companies selection of insurance companies may therefore be interesting. Research has traditionally focused on the existing customers, and how to keep them. In contrast, research concerning how people choose their insurance company has been limited, both nationally and internationally. We believe this dissertation may be of value for insurance companies because the knowledge of the factors may be important for attracting customers.

Recently, the most of domestic construction executive department by “insurance “execute the risk management. Since the construction insurance system has implemented for many years, already had the certain result, and also obtains each department approbation. However the international terrorism and the domestic natural disaster have higher frequency, the reinsurance company withdrew from the domestic market. Our insurance companies are lacking the risk transfer object; the aspiration insured the construction insurance to be lower. It caused many large-size publish construction can’t buy the policy recent year, even if can buy the policy, the deductible and fee rate are increasing largely, obviously unreasonable phenomenon. Consider the government administration, if the public constructions execute delay and budget increase, what it affects all the people’s benefit, is it reasonable? Therefore, when the government execute the public constructions, avoids to buy the policy difficulty, higher fee and deductible, indemnify with dispute and so on disadvantageous factors, affect the construction executive and all the people’s right seriously. So we use the insurance theory about “Captive Insurance” to set up a “Construction Captive Insurance Organization” by the government. It only ensure the risk during the construction, and the insurance fee of the construction insurance from the insurance company, all save to this organization. If the construction accident occur, the organization is responsible for compensate. It must to program each kind of positive risk management actions at the same time, and according to impels.

Abstract Using the merger and acquisition of life insurance company by the non-financial institution as the research subject, collecting data through questionnaire survey, applying independent t test and linear regression analysis, this research investigated the impact of working environment change, personality traits and demographic variables on the organizational commitment of employees after the merger and acquisition. Our results found that, 1.After the merger and acquisition, demographic variables (gender, age, education, marital and other variables) have no impact on employees&;#39; organizational commitment. 2.Employees, who have more personality traits with internal locus of control, have higher organizational commitment after the merger and acquisition. 3.For the working environment indicators, after the merger and acquisition, the increasing of job content and the decreasing of job security and development will reduce employees’ organizational commitment. The rest of other working environment indicator variables, such as: salaries and benefits, firm system, job resources, change of personal relationship are irrelevant to employees’ organizational commitment.

AbstractIn this chapter I analyze the impact that Directive 2016/97 has on insurance companies. The new requirements for employees who distribute the insurance policies of the insurance company increase the protection for customers. In addition, these new requirements lead to a reform of the governance system of the insurance company. New policies, new procedure manuals are necessary to carry out the distribution of insurance by the insurance company. Therefore, I will study the new legal requirements and their impact on the Spanish regulations.

Abstract The Austrian social security system covers a broad range of social risks, most of them via a compulsory social insurance system that usually ties eligibility to current or former legal employment. Nationality is of minor importance once legal employment has been achieved and, for tax-financed benefits like child benefits and minimum-income guarantee, legal residence in Austria can be proven. With almost one of five employees in Austria being foreign-born, Austria ranks high in terms of foreign participation on the labour market. While reforms under the previous Government were aimed at restricting migrants’ access to (full) benefits, it is open if the coalition formed in January 2020 will pursue a more moderate path in this regard.

This chapter describes a simulator used by accounting students to mimic the official process of filling out a Personal Income Tax form. According to the Portuguese law, this form describes the amount of the employees’ Personal Income Tax withheld within a company, which must be submitted periodically to the Portuguese Tax Administration. This process is accomplished through an E-government tool accessed by only authorized company staff, which makes it impossible for accounting students to use it. This presents an obstacle for students who are learning about accounting because they cannot experiment with the “real” process in the courses they are studying. By using the proposed simulator that imitates the behavior and interface of the official tools, students can “learn by doing.”

In this chapter the author discusses how and when cases should be used or not, during short-term educational programs, either company tailored or open enrollment, and designed for midlevel and executive level managers. Reflecting on personal experiences of case-based teaching in short-term programs, the author shares two cases. One was an extremely successful integration of an extensive Harvard Business School case study into a company-tailored executive educational program conducted for a leading Russian insurance company, with about 200 participants (branch general managers who were leading teams of about 1000 employees and branch HR managers). The other was a contrasting story of failure. The cases are supplemented with reflections and summaries of lessons learned, along with frameworks for successful planning and delivery of case-based short-term educational programs.

Abstract:
Weather index insurance plays an important role in helping farmers avoid their economic loss from weather risk. There is increasing numbers of pilot areas of weather index insurance in China while the studies show its take-up has been disappointing low in many other developing countries. This study aims to explore the status of weather index insurance and its processing problems in China through the factors influencing farmers’ willingness to pay for Low-Temperature Index-based Mandarin Orange Insurance in Nangfeng County. The Fuzzy-Set Qualitative Comparative Analysis is conducted for the influencing factors, including strike level, premium, pay-out, planting cost, effect of low temperature, insurance claim process, trust in insurance and government subsidy. The result shows the combination of expensive premium, low payout, high planting cost, low government subsidy and distrust in insurance company causes farmers’ unwillingness to pay for Low Temperature Index-based Mandarin Orange Insurance, among which distrust is core factor. Expensive premium, low payout, high planting cost and low subsidy from government are main influencing factors.

Abstract:
When an enterprise becomes insolvent, it affects the partners (suppliers) of the company, the State and has a significant impact on the employees. The issue of the protection of workers' rights is one of the most important aspects in situations where the employer is declared insolvent. The country can develop its own employee protection system in case of company’s insolvency. In this article, based on the statistical data for the period 2003 – 2019, the author analyses the situation in Latvia. The aim of the study is to analyse the existing employee protection mechanism in Latvia, which the State implements with the help of state entrepreneurial risk fee. Two ways of protecting the rights of employees or satisfying claims are distinguished: a privilege system and a guarantee system. Latvia chooses the guarantee system. In this article, based on the statistical data obtained, it is proved that the model chosen by Latvia is financially successful although creates a negligible burden for entrepreneurs, and its benefits are significant because, in line with the situation of Latvia, sufficient financial resources are accumulated each year and employees' claims are covered to a certain amount according to regulations in enactments, as well as the Income Tax and Mandatory State Social Insurance Contributions are paid from these requirements covered by the guarantee fund. The author considers that the State may act as an intermediary or insurer in the insolvency situations of an undertaking in order to protect employees and, in particular, the State budget from covering unforeseeable costs.

Abstract:
Abstract In Japan, the fundamental disaster management plan was modified after a heavy rainfall event in 2015. According to the updated plan, the transfer of flood disaster risk to non-life insurance is promoted by the Japanese government. Thus, the importance of flood risk modeling for the insurance industry has increased. Winds are expected to become even stronger, resulting in higher storm surges, when the central pressure of the typhoon is intensified. Furthermore, it is possible for an insurance system to experience peak risk when such damage occurs simultaneously. Hence, refining the assessment method of storm surge risk is very important. An insurance company to which storm surge risk is transferred needs to assess not only the infrequent risks, for managing the risk of the company, but also the expected value of the estimated loss, for evaluating the insurance premium. However, only a few studies have assessed storm surges by stochastic approaches. In this study, storm surge losses along the coast of Tokyo Bay are predicted using the output of a stochastic typhoon model for 10,000 years. Storm surge losses due to 600 typhoons potentially causing storm surge damage for 10,000 years are calculated. Exceedance probability curves (EP curves) of estimated storm surge loss for each asset are created. Expected loss and the loss of representative return periods are evaluated based on these EP curves. We successfully determined the expected loss with a small calculation load.

Abstract:
The global Business Intelligence (BI) market grew by 10% in 2013 according to the Gartner Report. BI has been the top implementation priority for organizations for many years now. Today organizations require better use of data and analytics to support their business decisions. Internet power and business trend changes have provided a broad term - Big Data. To be able to handle it and leverage a value of having access to Big Data, organizations have no other choice than to get proper systems implemented and working. However traditional methods are not efficient for changing business needs. Long time between project start and go-live causes a gap between initial solution blueprint and actual user requirements in the end of the project. This article presents the latest market trends in BI systems implementation by comparing Agile with traditional methods. It presents a case study provided in a large telecommunications company (20K employees) and the results of a pilot research provided in the three large companies telecommunications, digital and insurance. Both studies prove that Agile methods might be more effective in BI projects from an end-user perspective and give first results and added value in a much shorter time compared to a traditional approach. Organizations often do not have a clear vision of BI requirements. Thus users ask for changes just before a BI product readiness, which Agile ensures in contradiction to traditional methods.

Abstract:
The pandemic has negatively affected the financial sector, as well as the real sector of the economy, both losses and credit risks in the financial market have increased on the background of the economic activity slowed-down. In 2019, the credit activity was high, however after the spread of the virus the activity slowed down significantly. This is natural, as due to the suspension of production –organizing, the unemployment has increased. Volume of the direct foreign investments has decreased by 42 %. Government of Georgia has developed an anti-crisis plan, important part of which is about the mitigation of deteriorated living conditions caused by the unemployment, whereas the National Bank of Georgia has pursued monetary and fiscal policies for the purpose of mitigation of negative influence of COVID-19 on the country’s financial sector and for the stimulation of the country's economy. In general, saving the business is considered as a priority. The current situation in the banking, insurance and stock markets and their role in the fight for maintaining the economic stability are analysed in the present article. It is important to note that, the insurance sector is the part of the economic, which did not need financial assistance in a difficult situation, but due to the common socio-economic situation, diseases caused by the stressful conditions of the population, it was necessary to make significant changes in the list of the insurance services. This, to the extent had led to some unforeseen costs, which had affected the financial conditions of the companies. According to the evaluation of the credit rating company -Fitch, the trustworthy policy implemented by the National Bank of Georgia, had played an important role in the maintenance of the financial stability and Georgian sovereign rating remained unchanged, at BB level, however, what parameters and in what area was the rating maintained and how the positions of the main players in the financial market have been changed, are the main directions of the article's research.

Abstract:
The result of the wider application of new digital skills is an increase in productivity as a basis for the growth of Latvian companies in the global market and an increase in material well-being in the market as a whole. In turn, the growth and competitiveness of companies is based on the ability to create and sell demanded, knowledge-intensive products and services on the basis of science, integrating into increasingly higher value-added global chains. Many companies are facing economic difficulties during the COVID- 19 crisis and have to suspend or significantly reduce their operations and staff. However, for some companies, the crisis has also given them the opportunity to reorient their operations to the digital environment, both in serving customers and in organizing the company's operations. The data obtained during the study show that the majority of entrepreneurs predict a decline in customer solvency and the emergence of new digital technologies in the market. Entrepreneurs think they should make more use of the latest technologies (forms of digital sales and communication with customers), new forms of cooperation in company communication (forms of digital communication with employees) and plan to introduce remote and / or semi-remote work. Entrepreneurs expect that the biggest challenges after the crisis caused by the pandemic will be the acquisition of new leadership skills and the acquisition of new digital technologies, as well as attracting investment. Unfortunately, the data of the study show that the majority of entrepreneurs did not use the support programs of state and local government institutions, but assessed the support measures developed by the government as very fragmented. The aim of the research: to assess the changes in the planning region at companies in different sectors in Riga planning region and to develop proposals to increase business productivity and competitiveness. Research methods: statistical data collection, business survey and in-depth interview.

Abstract:
The North American energy pipeline system represents a security challenge. Taking a holistic view of the problem allows the operator to construct and implement a strategy systematically. The solution involves a multi-disciplinary approach using a combination of business tools and technology to provide enhanced protection, and rapid restoration and recovery in the event of an attack. • Mapping of “high consequence” areas, including pipeline segments near population centers, water resources, or environmentally sensitive regions, will allow energy companies to more logically allocate security resources, but there may remain vast stretches of pipeline where physical barriers are impractical. • Formal decision analysis techniques can be effectively used to assess potential threats, analyze vulnerabilities, prepare contingency plans and set priorities. • Hardware elements of the solution will draw heavily upon technological innovations, including the use of active earth observation imagery and sophisticated sensing equipment for surveillance and early detection. • Strategic planning exercises will allow operators to think through the problem before a threat occurs and to put in place resources to react to a threat and to respond, restore, and recover from an attack. This is particularly true in coordination across a region. The expanding effort to safeguard the continent’s energy infrastructure will rely upon a greater level of (1) government-industry cooperation, particularly in the areas of data and information collection/analysis/dissemination, (2) technological adaptation/innovation, including greater use of sensing and surveillance technologies, (3) the development of financial and insurance products that fit the specific needs of energy asset owners and operators, (4) communication with key constituencies: customers, suppliers, regulators, law enforcement agencies, and financial markets, (5) customized training for employees, (6) government supervisory and enforcement authority to inspect and penalize companies that do not implement the appropriate level of security, while providing a due diligence safe harbor for those that are proactive; and (7) an unwavering commitment to protect vital assets, human, physical, and otherwise. It is critical that pipeline security programs focus on long-term, sustainable solutions that are customized to fit the specific needs of particular energy asset networks. The paper contains a specific example of pipeline infrastructure management system and display screen examples.

Abstract:
The oil and gas pipeline companies in China are facing unprecedented opportunities and challenges because of China’s increasing demand for oil and gas energy that is attributed to rapid economic and social development. Limitation of land resource and the fast urbanization lead to a determinate result that many pipelines have to go through or be adjacent to highly populated areas such as cities or towns. The increasing Chinese government regulation, and public concerns about industrial safety and environmental protection push the pipeline companies to enhance the safety, health and environmental protection management. In recent years, PetroChina Pipeline Company (PPC) pays a lot of attention and effort to improve employees and public safety around the pipeline facilities. A comprehensive, integrated HSE management system is continuously improved and effectively implemented in PPC. PPC conducts hazard identification, risk assessment, risk control and mitigation, risk monitoring. For the oil and gas stations in highly populated area or with numerous employees, PPC carries out quantitative risk assessment (QRA) to evaluate and manage the population risk. To make the assessment, “Guidelines for quantitative risk assessments” (purple book) published by Committee for the Prevention of Disasters of Netherlands is used along with a software package. The basic principles, process, and methods of QRA technology are introduced in this article. The process is to identify the station hazards, determinate the failure scenarios of the facilities, estimate the possibilities of leakage failures, calculate the consequences of failures and damages to population, demonstrate the individual risk and social risk, and evaluate whether the risk is acceptable. The process may involve the mathematical modeling of fluid and gas spill, dispersion, fire and explosion. One QRA case in an oil pipeline station is described in this article to illustrate the application process and discuss several key issues in the assessment. Using QRA technique, about 20 stations have been evaluated in PPC. On the basis of the results, managers have taken prevention and mitigation plans to control the risk. QRAs in the pipeline station can provide a quantitative basis and valuable reference for the company’s decision-making and land use planning. Also, QRA can play a role to make a better relationship between the pipeline companies and the local regulator and public. Finally, this article delivers limitations of QRA in Chinese pipeline stations and discusses issues of the solutions.

The role of incentives in encouraging workplace HIV/AIDS policies and programs. Population Council, 2004. http://dx.doi.org/10.31899/hiv15.1007.

Full text
Abstract:
This brief examines the role of incentives in encouraging companies in Thailand to adopt workplace policies and programs that address AIDS-related stigma and discrimination and respond to the needs of workers for information and services. The research was a collaboration between the Horizons Program, American International Assurance (AIA), the Thailand Business Coalition on AIDS (TBCA), and AusAID. After the initiative was launched (known as the AIDS-response Standard Organization), TBCA staff built relationships with company managers to explain and promote the advantages of joining. Companies agreeing to implement at least three HIV/AIDS workplace policies would receive a reduction of 5–10 percent off group life insurance premiums from AIA, Thailand’s largest insurance provider, if they were AIA clients. As the initiative evolved, TBCA introduced the additional incentive of a certificate endorsed by the government and awarded at a high-profile public ceremony. For each company agreeing to participate, TBCA offered assistance to enhance their activities, including providing educational leaflets, videos, and a mobile exhibition, as well as condoms, peer education training, counseling and referrals to support groups for HIV-positive employees, and assistance with writing company HIV/AIDS policies.
