Pinto, Ricardo Leite. "A censura e as publicações periódicas infanto-juvenis no Estado Novo : o papel da Comissão Especial para a literatura infantil e juvenil e da Comissão para a Literatura e Espectáculos para Menores (1950-1968)." Doctoral thesis, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10451/37925.
Full textThe present investigation seeks to bring to light "a fragment of lost history" in the “Estado Novo” that occurred in the 1950s and 1960s: the collision between child and youth journalism, born of private initiative and “Censura” 's action, within the authoritarian framework of the salazarist political regime. It is a question of determining the moment when the Estado Novo became aware of the need to domesticate "comics", which overwhelmingly took over the children's and youth periodicals .The strategy was based on two pillars: the first was the establishment of specialized structures for child and youth censorship, the “ Comissão Especial para a Literatura Infantil e Juvenil” 1950 and 1952 and the “ Comissão para a Literatura e Espectáculos para Menores” between 1953 and 1974, and the second, the definition of "codes" - "Instruções sobre Literatura Infantil" - and guidelines with jurisprudential nature that sought to give coherence to censorial acts. But the campaign of moralization carried out by the “Estado Novo” takes on another meaning if it looks at the international context, with particular emphasis on USA, UK, France and Spain. This perspective will give another dimension to the Portuguese censor who can be seen and sees himself as a universal censor. The most significant data points to a strategy that sought to work in two directions: intimidation for national publications and repression for foreign imports. But the aim of delegitimizing "comics" was not as successful as one of the most important partners in the moralization campaign, “Mocidade Portuguesa”, worked as eventually helping comics cultural recognition. The final balance allows us to say that the child and youth censorship moment ended up having among us a contained expression that did not prevent the gradual cultural affirmation of comics in the 60s and 70s, similarly to what happened in the rest of the world.
