Abstract:
Juan Goytisolo is among many contemporary writers who have reflected on Cervantes in some of their works. We find these reflections not only in his creative writing but also in his essays, where his interest in different facets of the Islamic world is evident. It is noteworthy that Goytisolo relates to Cervantes both in his own poetics and in his existential choices. On the one hand, his works aim to destroy Spain's historical and literary tradition, but on the other, thanks to Cervantes, they recover a bond with Spain and his roots. The genetic bond that links Goytisolo with Cervantes was developed in an essay in his Crónicas sarracinas (1981), chronologically contemporary with his novel Makbara (1980). In both works Goytisolo elaborates on the problematic relationship between the Islamic world and the West. The two aspects analyzed here are: the political one, in which a parallel is drawn between the “Grand Turk”/Christendom dichotomy and the two contemporary ideological blocks; and the vital one, because both Cervantes and Goytisolo have had direct experience of the Islamic world.

Abstract:
This study deals with the concept of marginalisation in the politico-economic and socio-cultural exclusion in Juan Goytisolo's triology : Señas de identidad, Reividicación del Conde don Julian and Juan sin Tierra, published in a context of extreme violence, dictatorship, injustice and arbitrary unrest of Franco's regime. It deals with the structural, ideological and artistic analyses of the trilogy. It focuses on the analyses of the sacred destruction of spain's, moral and political values imposed by the dictatorship of the rich class to men in the south, the emigrated, those excluded by the society and poses fundamental problems of man: the right for liberty, the absence of communication between races and social classes (Black African slaves deported to an Spanish colonial plantations in Cuba. The work articulates itself on the social, economic, political, cultural and metaphical domains. It deals with the aberration of human thought, pitiless unveiling of the ideology and problematises human destiny. It focuses on literary and philosophical thought from major Spanish writers of the medieval age to the 21st century and even some French and American writers such as Ernest Hemingway. And lastly, the study sets out to give meaning to life in Goytisolian triology by immortalising it in the capitalist and third world countries where man have, until recent times, been crushed by extreme repression. Thus, the objective of the writer is to construct an ideal society, of an Eden or an egalitarian world

Davis, Stuart. "Juan Goytisolo and the institution of the Hispanic canon." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2003. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/4411/.

Abstract:
This thesis aims to study the ways in which literary canonisation occurs and how the academic institution is an integral part of the canonisation process. It takes as its focus the work of the Spanish writer Juan Goytisolo, who has been publishing since the 1950s and is universally considered an important figure in contemporary Hispanic literature. After contextualising recent debate concerning the literary canon, I discuss the influences and paradigm shifts that have conditioned reception of Goytisolo’s work, bringing him to prominence both inside and outside Spain. The study then addresses the strategies that the author himself uses in his novels to encourage debate and criticism by the institution. Whilst the second and third chapters analyse the distance between reader and novel, focusing on the difficulty of understanding both form and content in Makbara, the following two chapters study Goytisolo’s desire to situate his work in the canon through autobiographical and intertextual references. Analysis is both metacritical, in its examination of critics’ assumptions, and also textual, through its focus on Goytisolo’s novels. To conclude, the thesis demonstrates the symbiotic relationship of the academic institution and the writer, with the literary canon as the key that unlocks their common history.

Abstract:
Goytisolo is a key figure in 20th century spanish literature. He exhibits a sound knowledge of the Arabs and their culture. Arabs, whose lives seem to be less worthy than other peoples, are contemplated through a long series of stereotypes. Goytisolo defends the wave of violence which led the Arab world to be accused of all the evil. He reminds western countries of some of the cruellest episodes in human history. He goes on to suggest that some views on Islam are wrong, since they depart from ideas and values which are inherently western and cannot be easily translated anywhere else. The simple message of Islamic beliefs makes it easy to understand the strong bonds among Muslims and the spread of the cult thoughout fourteen centuries. The great "Yihad" means to Muslim believers an inner struggle against their own selfishness. It is a wish to change the world.
