Abstract:
David Chalmers thinks his iPhone exemplifies the extended-mind thesis by meeting the criteria that he and Andy Clark established in their well-known paper (1998). Andy Clark agrees. This chapter takes this proposal seriously, evaluating the case of the GPS-enabled smartphone as a potential mind extender. It is argued here that the “trust and glue” criteria enumerated by Clark and Chalmers are incompatible with both the epistemic responsibilities that accompany everyday activities and the practices of trust that enable users to discharge them. Prospects for revision of the original criteria are

Abstract:
The gap between the promise of the Constitution and the reality of life for most South Africans is a significant problem that requires urgent attention. This book explores that gap — its causes, its meaning and its implications. On the face of it, the Constitution provides for the security of all the people in South Africa and it does this in many compelling ways. Yet the majority of the population are socially, economically, physically and psychologically insecure. This gives rise to troubling questions: What is the nature and extent of the gap between the constitutional promise of security a

Growing unease in the scientific community has stimulated reception of classical authors as Karl Jaspers. By drawing on existential philosophy Jaspers has given GP a depth which allows reflecting the methodological premises of psychopathology. Anthropologic phenomenology of Edmund Husserl was received with scepticism by Jaspers as was V. v. Weizsäcker’s psychosomatic medicine and Mitscherlich`s psychoanalysis. Jaspers refined mainstream psychopathology by understanding their nature and defining precise criteria. Delusion and psychotic symptoms are examples. The observation of patient`s and psy

The writing of this book was triggered by a twofold desire: to bridge the unacceptable gap between the positive rules of the international law governing armed hostilities and actual state practice, and to reduce the humanitarian suffering caused by this reality. The current law does not seem to be optimal in balancing the different interests of states’ militaries and the humanitarian agenda. As summarized in this concluding chapter, in response to this challenge, this book offers a new paradigm based on reality that may elevate the humanitarian threshold by replacing the currently problematic

The reduction of mental phenomena to neurochemistry and neural connectivity is a theoretical position called “greedy reductionism.” Although reduction can be an illuminating research strategy, it should not be used to downplay research at mental levels or to promote theories of mental disorder that give primacy only to neurochemistry and neuroconnectivity. Although mind depends on brain, mental activity has emergent properties that cannot be explained reductively. This explanatory gap may help explain why neuroscience and cognitive science provide an incomplete model of the mind. This chapter

One of the critical challenges in relationship science is translating the “science” of relationship research into the “practice” of clinical intervention. One of the major issues in this challenge is determining when something “works” or, more specifically, identifying the central criteria from which to evaluate the findings of research and determine that an intervention is ready for clinical use. This seemingly simple task is complex given that relationship science research is based on the interaction among client factors, therapeutic influence, and specific change mechanisms that lead to mea

This book uncovers the best practices to remedy these inequities, optimize performance, and benefit both genders. In compiling and analyzing 2011–2012 data on women leaders across all major sectors in the United States, author Tiffani Lennon, JD, uncovered proof that women are outperforming men–yet salaries and positional leadership roles are disproportionate to the performance and accomplishments of women in nearly all secto

Abstract:
This book advances the theory that a potential leading export sector—in this case, the oil sector—is capable of inducing economic growth even in peripheral countries where the product line is primary in nature. In Venezuela the oil sector has contributed directly and indirectly to the development of the country’s overall economy, particularly from 1936 to 1973, when that sector met the criteria of a leading sector, i.e., one that expands rapidly and obtains a large specific size relative to the economy as a whole. The worldwide controversy surrounding its first publication in 1988 and concurrent death threat against its author, Salman Rushdie, paradoxically led to a narrow understanding of The Satanic Verses, which focused on whether it is insulting to Islam and whether it should be banned. And despite piecemeal attention to its epistemic intricacies by students of postcolonial literature in the aftermath, The Satanic Verses’ essential opacity has never been sufficiently met. The Unknown Satanic Verses Controversy on Race and Religion now responds to this gap through painstakingly detailed attention to
