Ground Penetrating Radar is a tool for mapping the subsurface in a noninvasive way. The radar instrument transmits electromagnetic waves and records the resulting scattered field. Unfortunately, the data from a survey can be hard to interpret, and this holds extra true for non-experts in the field. The data are also usually in 2.5D, or pseudo 3D, meaning that the vast majority of the scanned volume is missing data. These OPR systems have difficulties with high clutter level, surface reflections, limited ground penetration and the required fine resolution. Maintenance of aging buried infrastructure and reinforced concrete are critical issues in the United States. Inexpensive non-destructive techniques for mapping and imaging infrastructure and defects are an integral component of maintenance. Ground penetrating radar (GPR) is a widely-used non-destructive tool for locating buried infrastructure and for imaging rebar and other features of interest to civil engineers. Conventional acquisition and interpretation of GPR profiles is based on the arrival times of strong reflected/diffracted returns, and qualitative interpretation of return amplitudes.

Neste trabalho foi realizado um levantamento GPR 4D em laboratório no qual foi simulado o vazamento de óleo de uma ETD - Estação de Transmissão e Distribuição de Energia Elétrica. Os estudos consistiram em derramar 15 litros de óleo em três experimentos: tanque contendo areia seca, tanque contendo areia úmida mais gradiente hidráulico e tanque contendo areia úmida. A wireless data transmission system was developed and implemented for use in real-time 3D geophysical sensing. Server and Client applications were designed to run on a stationary computer and a mobile computer attached to the geophysical sensor, respectively. Several methods for optimizing communication over wireless networks using commonly available hardware were tested and compared, and a scheme for varying the size of transmissions in accordance with the recent performance of the wireless network was chosen.
