This thesis addresses the tasks of place discovery and place recognition - learning and recognizing places significant to a user - by analyzing GPS location and GSM cell tower data collected from the user's mobile phone. Location provides valuable context into the user's environment, and place-discovery and recognition algorithms enable human-centric systems to communicate with the user in human terms. In this thesis, we introduce a novel two-phased approach to place-discovery and recognition that combines the advantages of GPS and GSM cell data. We design and implement a system that produces a compact travel summary from the user's daily GPS logs. We then use computational geometry to investigate the aspect ratios of GSM cell coverage polygons as an optimization to place recognition. Finally, we conclude by presenting a one-month empirical study to demonstrate the effectiveness of our two-phased approach, and identify a set of anomalies in our experiment that can direct further development of place-discovery systems.

Abstract:

This report studies a low cost hardware platform for Fleet Management Services, FMS. The platform manages vehicle data, positioning and wireless communication. The core of the platform is a new kind of ‘intelligent’ GSM modem, called a GSM module. A GSM module is basically a stripped down mobile phone that allows embedded third party application code and has an IP-stack. The report reviews the modules available on the market today and presents experiences from the implementation of a prototype based on the Aplicom A12 module. The main conclusion is that the concept is feasible though the modules' limited performance must be considered in the design.

Abstract:

School bus routing and scheduling are among the major problems because school bus transportation needs to be safe, reliable and efficient. Hence, the research question for this thesis is to answer how to transport students in the safest, most economical and convenient manner. The objective of this thesis is to create a GIS based school transport management system which helps in bus-stop allocation, design fastest and safest bus routes with AVL facility. This thesis also aims to investigate how a school transportation management system may improve the transportation security. The result from this study has helped to develop a school bus routing and scheduling prototype model for Sujatha High School, Hyderabad. This prototype model will help the school transportation management to design shortest and fastest school bus routes and they can also allocate bus stops, which will help them in selecting the pick-up stops for the students and staff, according to their concentration in the areas. This thesis has also, through literature study, investigated how a school transport management system can improve the transportation security. For the time being, there is a general belief that ICT contributes to improving the security, although a quantification of such improvements are lacking. The user interface application has been developed by using VBA and ArcGIS 9.1 Network Analyst provided by Environmental Science Research Institute and it has been evaluated by GIS users.

Abstract:
The Retail industry is facing a big challenge, competition from e-commerce that is taking market shares. This poses a problem for shopkeepers and therefore also for property owners. Today various people agree that the retail industry will need to undergo major changes to keep attracting customers. Many stores today become more like showrooms where people test products that are then bought online. When this happens, the shop's purpose changes from sales to being more like marketing for the brand. Today, a stores rent is determined at a fixed amount or based on sales, but if the store becomes a marketing site, it may be more relevant to charge based on how many people see the store. Using a new technique called geotracking, you can get accurate data on how many people pass outside a store. Geotracking is a collective term for different approaches to trace people's geographic position through their mobile phones. It works by measuring radio waves as the phones broadcast. The purpose of this report is to investigate whether geotracking can be used as a basis for determining rent. To answer this, the report has been divided after three, for geotracking, basic conditions. These are technology, rent determination and integrity. The result of the study shows that there is a need to optimize the rent determination of stores to meet future challenges. It also shows that the three basic conditions for geotracking can be met, why it is advisable to use geotracking when determining rent for a shop space.

Abstract:

Abstract:

For emergency service providers, giving their service in least time shows their best performance. Emergency hospitals will be at their best if the ambulance reaches the site in Golden hour where life of injured persons can be saved. Ambulance uses the road network to reach the accident site. Today there are many GIS based systems being developed for routing of ambulance using GPS and other real-time technologies. These systems are useful and play a major role in solving the routing problem. But now roads are so congested that it difficult for the Ambulance drivers to travel and reach the accident.

In this thesis present study area is studied and problems faced by emergency service providers on road network are identified. In this thesis GIS/GPS/GSM based prototype system has been developed for routing of ambulance on road network of Hyderabad city (AMS). This prototype is designed such that it finds the accident location on the road network and locates the nearest ambulance to incident site using the real-time technologies (GPS/GSM). AMS creates the fastest route from nearest ambulance to accident site, and from there to nearest hospital. Congestion on roads during peak hours is considered, and the fastest route on both major and minor roads is created.

In this thesis AMS user interface has been developed using VBA, ArcGIS (network analyst). This Ambulance management system has been developed using software engineering model rapid prototyping model and has been evaluated by GIS users

Full text
Abstract:
The wildlife tracking market can be regarded as a niche market in the worldwide tracking industry. The methods considered for RF wildlife tracking are limited to techniques that can be reconciled with the cost, size and power consumption limitations required by this application. For this reason the primary method of wildlife tracking till recently was still based on an RF beacon transmitter fitted to the animal and a mobile manually operated tracking device that is equipped with a RF receiver. This method of tracking is very time consuming, as the animal is tracked by physically searching for it in the wild, which mostly limits the tracker to focus on one animal at a time. Another method that found limited use in wildlife tracking is GPS positioning combined with communication by means of satellite telemetry. This method of tracking is very expensive, the physical size of the tracking device limits the usage of this system to large animals, and there are to date not an efficient power source to drive this system for a desired period of time without putting undesired stress on the animal. Recent advances in the world of wireless communications resulted in the widespread use of RF tracking based on mobile transceivers that communicate not with a mobile tracking device or with satellites but with the beacons of a fixed installed wireless network. The primary method of positional tracking used in this industry is GPS location based on triangulation, with data communication by means of GSM or an alternative network of fixed RF transmitters. Using the communication capabilities of GSM networks as basis for wildlife tracking enables a level of efficiency, flexibility and cost-effectiveness that cannot be matched by the earlier approaches. As this new approach to wildlife tracking has not been applied in practice before as an integrated part of wildlife management systems, the need existed to investigate the design, development, production and support of a wildlife tracking system that is based on these advances in technology. The results of this method of tracking opened up a whole new dimension in wildlife tracking for research, security and wildlife management, based on the fact that GPS is a global means of determining positional data and GSM is a globally accepted means of data transfer that is expanding each day.

Abstract:
In today's information society, concepts like smart cities and IoT (Internet of Things) are hot topics. All imaginable devices should be connected to the internet and "things" should communicate with each other. For smart city visions to be realized, new demands are put on several existing technologies, and new technologies are being developed to replace or supplement the old ones. This report focuses on comparing older technologies with new ones within the areas of positioning and wireless communication. Traditional GPS (Global Positioning System) is compared to Wi-Fi based services and GSM (Global System for Mobile communications) is set against the Sigfox network that is specially developed for IoT applications. A measuring device is constructed by electronics modules and a smartphone to collect data in different geographic areas and environments. From the collected data, results can show how positioning services relate to each other and how coverage can be expected by communication technologies. An indication is also given of how the energy consumption can be expected when using the different technologies. Finally, conclusions are given on how combinations of technologies can be used and what pros and cons arise with the selected combinations. This facilitates component selection in a product development phase.

Abstract:
Waterbirds with their specific habitat and food requirements varying during their annual cycle (Riffell et al. 2003; Taft and Haig 2006) are able to indicate the wetland diversity and quality due to their rapid responses on changes in environment (Delany 1999; Fernández et al. 2005; Amat and Green 2010). Remarkable land cover changes and climate warming led to significant shifts in distribution and abundance of many waterbird species across Europe in recent decades (Delany et al. 2006; Fox et al. 2010; Lehikoinen et al. 2013; Pavón-Jordán et al. 2015). To understand the dynamic of migratory birds in space and time and to assess effects of global conditions as well as local conditions of individual sites during their annual cycle there is need of international monitoring and research. Since the start of International Waterbird Census in 1967 both increasing and decreasing trends have been recorded in nearly fifty percent of waterbird species in Western Palearctic (Delany et al. 2006, Wetlands International 2016) and they consequently have affected trends in particular countries, including the Czech Republic. Wetland sites in the Czech Republic are generally situated on the edge of wintering range of most waterbird species (Gilissen et al. 2002), however the prevailing increase in abundance of waterbird species has been recorded here in recent decades (Musil et al. 2011). Though, the considerable growth of winter temperatures has not been noticed in the Czech Republic (Klein Tank et al. 2002; Musilová et al. 2009; Dušek et al. 2013), and the accessibility of the wetland sites, due to their freezing, varies year to year. Hence, we can assume that waterbirds have likely began using the alternative habitats with available food resources, i.e. cold-weather refuges, probably regardless of their conservation status (Musilová et al. 2015). Special protection areas were implemented to Czech legislation in 2004 to protect migratory birds (Birds Directive 2009/147/EC). So far there has not been tested the effectivity and impact of legislative protection on wintering waterbird species. Moreover, some previous studies indicated that SPA network do not match the species distribution pattern (López-López et al. 2007; Briggs et al. 2012; Albuquerque et al. 2013), so this issue urgently calls for scientific research. The second part of the thesis focused on Greylag Geese, whose abundance has rapidly grown across the Europe in recent decades (Madsen et al. 1999; Fox et al. 2010), and that have become ideal model species to observe their responses to habitats and climate changes as well as their reactions to human disturbance (Fox and Madsen 1997; Ramo et al. 2015). This requires appropriate knowledge of geese distribution, abundance and their behaviour. Since 1930s, when the geese started to be ringed in the Czech Republic, the ringing intensity have markedly varied and have been reflected in numbers of recoveries. In last ten years the intensity have increased (Podhrazský 2010). However, complex of the historical data until 2002 (Cepák et al. 2008) and recent data have not been analysed so far. In the light of recent shifts in wintering ranges and migration phenology of many goose populations these analyses require increased attention. Furthermore, the satellite monitoring of geese is coming to detect more detailed information about behaviour of individuals.

Abstract:
The widespread use of smaller, less expensive, and more capable mobile devices, has opened the door for more complex and varied mobile computing applications. Additionally, manufacturers are increasingly equipping these handheld devices with every type of wireless connectivity and sensors that can be explored for providing more complex services. In recent years, several techniques for location estimation have been developed, providing different degrees of accuracy. Some of these solutions require the installation of specific hardware in the environment, while others explore the existing infrastructure. In particular, it is possible to explore the existing communication infrastructure to build a location system relying on signal strength measures. However, while several systems already exist to locate users based on different approaches, there is no single one that is good for every situation while providing high accuracy, low cost and ubiquitous coverage. Not only that, but very few research has been made regarding on how a group of users can cooperate to improve accuracy or reduce energy consumption while using the location system. This work presents the Unified Cooperative Location System, a modular and extensible location system. Its modular design can use every available technology on each device and different algorithms for location estimation. This approach allows to provide location services with high availability by relying on different technologies. It also allows to reduce the energy consumption on devices by sharing the responsibility of executing energy-heavy operations. The system also includes an information exchange mechanism, allowing devices to gather location information from nearby users, like GPS or Wi-Fi, which would otherwise be unavailable for some. The results of our experiences show that the possibility of exchanging GSM information provides a practical solution for location estimation based on multiple GSM signals, thus significantly increasing location accuracy with this technology.

Abstract:
GPS has long been used for accurate and reliable outdoor localization, but it cannot operate in indoor environments, which suggests developing indoor localization methods that can provide seamless and ubiquitous services for mobile users. In this thesis, indoor localization is realized making use of received signal strength fingerprinting technique based on the existing GSM networks. A room is defined as the minimum location unit, and support vector machine are used as a mean to discriminate the rooms by classifying received signal strengths from very large number of GSM carriers. At the same time, multiple sensors, such as accelerometer and gyroscope, are widely available for modern mobile devices, which provide additional information that helps location determination. The hybrid approach that combines the GSM fingerprinting results with mobile sensor and building layout information using a particle filter provides a more accurate and fine-grained localization result. The results of experiments under realistic conditions demonstrate that correct room number can be obtained 94% of the time provided the derived model is used before significant received signal strength drift sets in. Furthermore, if the training data is sampled over a few days, the performance can remain stable exceeding 80% over a period of months, and can be further improved with various post-processing techniques. Moreover, including the mobile sensors allows the system to localize the mobile trajectory coordinates with high accuracy and reliability

As global location systems offer only restricted availability, they are not suitable for a world-

which can be considered globally working in contrast to formerly developed technologies. For

the creation of an innovative approach, an evaluation of the previous efforts has to be made.

As a result of this assessment, a newly developed solution is presented in this thesis that uses

the Global Positioning System (GPS) in connection with the database correlation method

involving Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) fingerprints. The database

entries are generated automatically by measuring numerous GSM parameters such as Cell

Identity and signal strength involving handsets of several different providers and the real

Wood, Nicholas Stephen. "Assessing the marginal cost of freeway congestion for vehicle fleets using passive GPS speed data." Thesis, Georgia Institute of Technology, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/34798.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the marginal cost of congested travel to a variety of businesses by observing time spent in congestion and estimating excess labor costs based upon the relevant value of time. The fleets in the scoping study represented commercial deliveries of goods and services, government agencies, and transit systems. Observations on limited-access expressways within the 13-county Atlanta metropolitan region were used in the analysis. Vehicles were monitored by using a passive GPS assembly that transmitted speed and location data in real-time to an off-site location. Installation and operation during the observation period required no interaction from the driver. Over 217 hours of good freeway movement during 354 vehicle-days was recorded. Rates of delay, expressed as a unit of lost minutes per mile traveled, were calculated by taking the difference in speeds observed during congestion from an optimal free-flow speed of 45 mph and dividing that by the distance traveled per segment. The difference between the 50th and 95th percentile delay rates was used as the measure for travel unreliability. Daily average values of extra time needed per fleet vehicle to ensure on-time arrivals were derived, and the median buffer across all fleets was 1.65 hours of added time per vehicle. Weekly marginal costs per fleet vehicle were estimated by factoring in the corresponding driver wages or hourly operation costs (for transit fleets). Equivalent toll rates were calculated by multiplying the 95th percentile delay rate by the hourly costs. The equivalent toll per mile traveled was representative of an equal relationship between the marginal costs of congestion experienced and a hypothetical state of free-flow travel (under first-best rules of marginal cost pricing). The median equivalent toll rates across all fleets was $0.43 per mile for weekday mornings, $0.13 per mile for midday weekdays, $0.53 per mile for afternoon weekdays and $0.01 per mile for weekday nights and weekends.

The percentage of use of motorcycles has increased compared to that of automobiles. Most likely, this number will continue to increase annually due to several factors: mobility, flexibility of circulation and a lower fuel consumption. However, the main problem of motorcycle riding entails a higher risk of casualities compared to automobiles. The safety of the driver and passengers, when involved in an accident, merits our attention. It is, therefore, necessary to find solutions capable of preventing or helping minimize the number of mortality which may occur daily. A greater attention to road safety measures assisted in reducing the number of accidents, however, when these occur, the rescue squads take some time to arrive. Everybody knows that in these situations, every single second can make a difference. This is the problem that this author wishes to solve. This project is based on the development of a system for motorcycles with the ability of recognizing an accident. This system sends an alert (SMS) with information of the location of the occurrence (GPS). The system operates in isolated places with little or no traffic at all. It was equipped with a wireless technology to be used in most models of motorcycles. There were also introduced interfaces, which allow the monitoring and the recognition of information on the accident and the driver in real time.

Abstract:
The sustainability of a potable groundwater supply in the regional aquifer of Indian Wells Valley, California, is threatened by overdraft and by induction of contaminated upper aquifer waters into the lower, regional aquifer. A three layer MODFLOW groundwater model is developed in GMS (Groundwater Modeling System) to enhance understanding of the hydro logic flow regime and to serve as a groundwater management tool. The steady-state model is calibrated with water level measurements collected during 1920 and 1921. Water level data spanning several decades are used in transient model calibration. Calibration is by trial and error adjustment of the transmissivity with subsequent recharge refinement. Model simulated heads agree with observed heads in most regions within ten feet, except for the southwest, which may require additional field investigation. The model suggests that less than 5000 acre feet/year of recharge may supply the valley, compared with previous model estimates of 9840 acre-feet/year.

Today there are a big need for a system that delivers overview of all available units for different municipalities and shipping- and security companies due to the increasing requirements for efficiency. The purpose with this graduation thesis is to find out which systems that is suitable to use while developing cost-effective software for positioning and to produce a prototype for such solution. This assignment has been done at the request of PocketMobile Communications AB. PocketMobile is a company that are specialized on delivering modern mobile software solutions and systems to companies with their own vehicle fleet or mobile workers. This master thesis can be split into two separate parts, the theoretic- and the practical part. The theoretic part includes producing a number of functional requirements in cooperation with PocketMobile and comparing the available systems against the function requirements. The practical part deal with the development of a prototype that demonstrates the software recommended. The development tools that best matched the functionality requirements when the selection was made in May 2007 were Map24 and OpenLayers. The system that was selected to use while developing the prototype was Map24, because this product matches all of the requirements and it is also suited for professional usage regarding support, scalability and reliability. Map24 also have some advanced functions like ability to route plan for example. The prototype that has been developed is web based and the graphic design is similar to Google Maps.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Global Positioning System (GPS) is a satellite-based navigation system that has been used widely both in civilian and military for positioning, navigation, timing and other position related applications. The hardware-based GPS receivers provide the least user flexibility. Thus, it is necessary to have Software-based GPS receivers for easy and quick implementation, simulation and analysis of algorithms. Software-based GPS receiver processes the GPS signal at the radio frequency or intermediate frequency depending on the hardware configuration of the receiver. In this development of the acquisition and tracking processes of the software receiver, the front-end device that converts the radio frequency signal from the antenna to an intermediate frequency is the Mitel 2021 GPS receiver board. An analog-to-digital (A/D) converter then digitizes the output signal from the RF front-end. The data is then processed using MATLAB programs to achieve acquisition and tracking of the GPS signals. The software GPS receiver can perform acquisition and tracking using different parameters and threshold values. This flexibility of operation allows weaker signals to be tracked and processed. In this software receiver design, the focus is on the acquisition and tracking of L1 band C/A code GPS signals used by most civilian applications. The purpose of this thesis is to develop the acquisition and tracking algorithms to extract the navigation data bits from the raw GPS signals. The navigation data bits provide all the necessary information to compute the pseudorange between the receiver and the visible satellites and determine the receiver location. Both MATLAB simulated GPS data and realistic GPS signals from a GSS 6560 simulator are used to verify the performance of the acquisition and tracking programs. The acquisition program is capable of locating the beginning of the C/A code and the carrier frequency to within the desired accuracy. From the output of the acquisition program, the tracking program can decode the navigation data bits. The tracking algorithm implemented is based on the block adjustment of synchronizing signal (BASS) method.

Abstract:
The main idea of this scrutiny is to outline the scope of taxable income from individual activity in Lithuania. The survey deals first with questions of notion of individual activity in Lithuanian personal income tax law, then with the calculation rules and principles, characteristics of taxable income, also declaration of income from individual activity is discussed. If income from individual activity must be taxed, first individual activity shall be determined. Individual activity varies from employment relations, i.e. when a person does his actual work under the subordination of someone else and gets renumeration. Also accasionally actions do not constitute individual activity. Income from individual activity form income of class B. Taxes from such an activity shall be declared, calculated and paid by the taxpayer until the first of May of next year. Income of Lithuanian resident received in foreigh country are not taxed by Lithuanian laws rather by that country where it was earned.
