There is much concern in South Africa about the poor performance of learners in mathematics, particularly in geometry. The participants of the research were 147 learners from three high schools in a rural area in the south of KwaZulu Natal, South Africa. It has always been said ‘Knowledge is Power' and that knowledge is gained through education, an idea as old as humanity. Learners acquire life skills such as cognitive ability, interpersonal, psychosocial, and social skills that help learners in decision making, problem solving, critical thinking, creative and effective communication. These skills are learnt through the numerous subjects within a curriculum. Dewey's assertion is that education is life itself, but it focuses on the examinations, yet life depends on the examination outcomes. This chapter focuses on how learning institutions use tests and examinations to grade learners which affects their future. The examination process causes anxiety due to lack of relevant information, inadequate preparation, and overloaded curriculum content. The pressure to achieve a certain level of excellence, family pride, academic recognition, and social mobility is stressful. The chapter will also explore the sources of stress, the levels of stress and stress management tactics.

This research reveals that now, almost 20 years later, a number of doors, walls, and windows still inhibit certain students from equal access and participation to the computing clubhouse and provides data from Ontario, Canada indicating that females make up only 26%, 21%, and 15.7% of student enrolled in the Grade 10, Grade 11, and Grade 12 high school courses, respectively. In recent decades, high-stakes school reforms and draconian budget cuts have constrained the autonomy of public school teachers in developing multi literacy approaches with emergent bilingual learners (e.g., English-only laws, high stakes testing). This chapter describes the community and multimodal instructional practices of two urban elementary school teachers/ researchers, developed in the context of a professional development initiative. Using critical, sociocultural conceptions of literacy and qualitative methods of investigation, the paper investigates different aspects of the teachers' writing instruction (i.e., community involvement; genre-based instruction; digital literacy; and multimodality); it also explores how the writing processes of focal bilingual students incorporated these practices. Findings show that this approach positioned bilingual learners as agentive text makers. In addition, the second-grade students developed a heightened awareness of audience and context. Implications are discussed, including the pressing need for teacher collaboration, robust school-university partnerships, and innovative multimodal approaches to literacy.

This chapter discusses how 11th and 12th grade high school students taking college classes for credit, called dual enrollment students, are empowered and actively engaged when evolving mobile technologies such as socrative.com and remind.com are used in the college classroom. Classroom Response Systems, Peer Instruction, and the Flipped Classroom have all become widely known and growing instructional strategies used to promote active learning and enhance student engagement in the college classroom. Socrative.com is used as a Classroom Response System to provide students voice in the learning context. Peer instruction facilitated through the use of socrative.com allows for the engagement of learners and is shown to empower students in the classroom to engage in and control their own learning. Effective communication outside of class is necessary in a flipped classroom. Abstract:
This chapter is drawn from a PhD study that employedStudent Team’sAchievement Divisions as a learning technique to enhance learners’ intrinsic motivation inTechnology Education within a South African multicultural school. The authors over the years observed learners’ actions, and interactions in Technology classes and realised that some of the learners find it difficult to engage in behaviour that arises within themselves -an aspect known as intrinsic motivation. Most learners in the Technology class, registered no concerns in obtaining low scores or failing the subject. However, a minority of the learner population obtained high achievement scores and maintained interest throughout lessons. This study explored the development of the ZPD in a cooperative learning context. The authorsusedSTAD, as a cooperative learning technique, in motivating learners intrinsically to increase their participation in class activities. The study explored STAD in1) closing the gap between pedagogy and content knowledge, and 2) intrinsically motivating learners to develop high levels of achievement in the subject of Technology. This study employed the Bricolage design in gathering data from two Grade eight Technology classes over a six-month period. The findings indicated that the learning environment cultivated learners’ development, curiosity, and positive attitude toward Technology.

Abstract:
I thought it would be relatively easy for me, with my six-year background of high school teaching and tutoring of math and physics, to co-op in the OC classroom with my first-grade son. I was both right and wrong. Indeed, my teaching experience and professional knowledge as a graduate student in child psychology helped me design activities suitable for first- and second-grade children. However, in terms of philosophy of teaching and organization of learning activities, my experience with traditional schooling was more harmful than helpful. My previous experience prepared me for delivering a lesson to a whole class or an individual. I was used to controlling children’s talk, which was supposed to be addressed only to me, and my students had learned early on in their schooling that they could talk legitimately only to the teacher and only when it was allowed by the teacher. The teacher was supposed to be the director, conductor, and main participant in classroom interaction. In the OC, I was shocked to discover that this traditional format of instruction was actively discouraged by teachers, co-opers, and children. This kind of teaching was not supported by the children in their interactions or by the classroom structure, with its small-group organization, children’s choice of groups, and nonsimultaneous rotation of the children from group to group. However, I did not know how to teach any other way. At the beginning of the school year I planned an activity that I called Magic Computer. It was designed to teach the reversibility of addition and subtraction as well as reading and computational skills, and it had worked beautifully with first- and second-graders in the past. The activity involved moving a paper strip that carried “computer commands” (“Think of a number. Add five to it. Take two away from it,” and so on) through an envelope with a window, to see one command at a time. The commands were designed so that addition and subtraction compensated for each other; therefore, the last message was “You have got your initial number!” The children’s job was to discover addition and subtraction combinations that cancel each other out and write them down on the paper strip, line by line.
