Ahmed, M. A. "An experimental study of the reading comprehension ability of sixth grade Iraqi primary school students." Thesis, Swansea University, 1991. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.635860.

Abstract:
This investigation focuses on reading comprehension among sixth grade pupils in Iraqi primary schools. It examines students' performance in this activity alongside the opinions of pupils, teachers, and parents in the Baghdad area towards the main factors which may influence the performance of pupils in learning reading comprehension in positive, or negative, ways. The first two chapters put the problems of teaching learning/reading comprehension in Iraqi schools into context, examining the general difficulties facing the teaching of Arabic and the emphasis given to the study of Arabic in the curricula, the philosophy, and the organization of primary schools in Iraq. Chapter three examines general theories of language learning, in particular behaviourist and mentalist approaches, whilst chapter four considers the nature and importance of reading together with some of the variables influencing reading ability. A more detailed review of the literature on the skills of reading aloud, and of 'silent reading' is undertaken in chapter five. The hypotheses and methodology of this investigation are set out in chapter six. The investigation involved the administration of four tests of silent reading to 400 sixth grade primary school pupils, equally divided by sex and environment. Subsequently, the opinions of pupils, teachers, and parents were sought on the problems of teaching/learning silent reading. The researcher's hypotheses were that significant differences exist in pupils' peformance in terms of environment and sex. Chapters seven, eight, nine, and ten present the results of the pupils' tests and of the questionnaires to pupils, teachers, and parents. The general findings are that: (a) significant differences exist between the performance of urban and rural pupils, but differences between the sexes are not statistically significant; (b) significant differences in urban/rural terms are also found in the results of the questionnaires, and these differences of perception and attitude may help to explain the variations in the standard of performance previously found. The final chapter includes the interpretation of the general findings together with recommendations designed to overcome some of the factors which may influence negatively the process of the learning and teaching of reading comprehension in Iraqi primary schools, also suggestions for further studies which could be carried out in this field.

Hutto, Selina Nease. "The Lived Experiences of Hispanic Mothers of Primary Grade Students within the Home and School Relationship." Thesis, Piedmont College, 2015. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3688014.

Full text
Abstract:

The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of Hispanic mothers of primary grade students with regard to the home and school relationship. The Hispanic population accounted for over half of the growth of the total U.S. population between 2000 and 2010 (Ennis, Rios-Vargas, & Albert, 2011), and Hispanic enrollment in schools increased from 15% to 20% of total enrollment in the U.S. (U.S. Census Bureau, 2013). With an increasing number of Hispanic students in U.S. public schools, it is important to understand how mothers of Hispanic students view education, schools, and teachers.

This study included three focus groups and seven in-depth individual interviews. Participants described their individual experiences with and perceptions of their interactions with school administrators, staff, and teachers; their relationships with their child's school, staff, and teachers; and how they work with and help their child with school related issues. Three primary themes emerged: (a) Affective Responses, (b) Relationships, and (c) Mothers' Engagement and Advocacy with the Teaching and Learning Process. Each mother's story gave a voice to the disconnect felt between their Hispanic homes and the American school. The mothers shared feelings of trust, fear, communication gaps, confusion, and frustration as they described their lived experiences.

The overall aim of this study was to contribute to the field of education by providing useful suggestions to enhance the home and school relationship. Some of the suggestions included: holding a monthly or bi-monthly forum for mothers to voice concerns, coordinating Hispanic bilingual mothers to serve as volunteers for the school year, providing homework examples and instructions in Spanish, and offering tutoring classes to specifically teach Hispanic mothers how to help their children with school at home. Literature supports a dissonance between the dominant school culture and the Hispanic home culture with neither side understanding the values and norms of the other (Wortham, Murillo, & Hamann, 2002). This research may be used to provide strategies for schools to communicate effectively with Hispanic mothers and increase their engagement in both the school and their child's education.

Abstract:
This study investigated the effects of a cross-age tutoring programme on the tutors' self-esteem. The study also examined the effects of the programme on the tutors' attitudes to computers. A case study approach was used to answer the following questions: 1. Does the self-esteem of tutors increase when they tutor in a nonacademic subject area e.g. teaching others to use computer games? 2. Do the changes in self-esteem generalise to other areas or are the changes specific to the subject area of the tutoring? 3. Do the tutors' attitudes to computers change when they teach younger children how to use computer games? Twelve tutors, from three A.C.T. primary schools, were trained as tutors. Girls from Years 5 and 6, with low self-esteem (measured using the Coopersmith Self-esteem Inventory), were selected to teach girls from Years 1 and 2 how to use computer programmes. Self-esteem was assessed pre- and post- tutoring using the Coopersmith Self-esteem Inventory, concept maps and teacher's ratings. Computer attitudes were assessed pre- and post- tutoring using the Bath County Computer Attitudes Survey and concept maps. A post-tutoring questionnaire provided information, from the tutors, about the tutoring programme. The case study approach allowed analysis of each student's experience in the programme. The criteria used to evaluate the effectiveness of the programme were the differences in the pre- and post- tutoring measures of self-esteem and computer attitudes and the tutors' responses in interviews. Self-esteem increased for eleven of the tutors. Making a contribution, feelings of increased competence, a sense of belonging and positive feedback were the factors that appeared to enhance the tutors' self-esteem. All tutors were more confident with the computer at the end of the programme, and in six cases there were increases in the computer attitude survey scores.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to investigate the extent to which Constructivist Learning Environment (CLE) aspects exist in primary level 4th and 5th grade Science and Technology Courses in Turkey as perceived by students and their teachers. Secondly, the study aimed at finding out whether perceptions of students on CLE differ according to certain demographic variables. Finally, the study attempted to explore the extent to which the perceptions of teachers on administrative support have a relationship with their perceptions on CLE. Subjects of the study involved 1143 primary level 4th and 5th grade students in Turkey during 2006-2007 school year from 6 socio-economic development groups as determined by State Planning Department and their 264 teachers. Data were collected in 2006-2007 Spring semester through administration of two questionnaires to the students and the teachers. Data analysis was carried out through both quantitative (repeated measures ANOVA, frequencies, means, standard deviations, MANOVA) and qualitative analysis techniques. The results of the study indicated that students and teachers perceived the current learning environment to be often constructivist. In addition, the results revealed that perception of CLE differed according to socio economic status and technology use of students. Lastly, the results revealed that there is a significant but low correlation between teachers&rsquo
perceptions on CLE and their perceptions on administrative support they received. The results revealed that students should be provided with more facilities and teachers be provided with more in-service training opportunities.

Full text
Abstract:
碩士
臺中師範學院
數學教育學系在職進修教學碩士學位班
91
Abstract The perception of an area is the numerosity within a closed boundary and involves the process of recognizing a geometric shape and numerosity. The recognition characteristics of gifted students include an abundance of knowledge, good powers of memorization, learning ability, reasoning skills, high comprehension ability, and integration ability. Thus, when gifted students construct a concept of areas, they have a concept structure consisting of a sequential order of concepts. This is the subject of this study. This study used paper and pencil tests composed of item relation structure analysis administered to gifted fifth and sixth grade students as test subjects to investigate their concept structure of trapezoid areas. From the study, the following points were discovered: 1. Conservation concept of trapezoid area: The concept structure of gifted students in the fifth and sixth grades consists of a single conceptual branch. The concept of cutting a figure into segments, moving the cut segments on a plane, and recombining them is referred to as the lower concept. The concept of cutting a figure into segments, moving the cut segments either up or down, and recombining them is referred to as the upper concept. 2. Standard measurement of trapezoid area concept: The concept structure of gifted fifth and sixth graders is divided into two conceptual branches and an independent concept. With regards to the size of a measurement unit (a square) as it relates to concept structure, the size of a square which is 4 square centimeters is independent of and has no relationship with a square which is 1 square centimeter. 3. Unit iteration measurement of trapezoid area concept: The concept structure of gifted fifth grade students consists of a single conceptual branch. The concept structure of gifted sixth grade students consists of 3 conceptual branches. The concept structure of gifted fifth grade students consists of measurement units that cover different shapes. Using measurement units that consist of one layer covering an area is regarded as the lower concept. Using measurement units that consist of two layers that cover an area is regarded as an upper concept, and using measurement units that consist of 3 layers to cover an area is regarded as the uppermost concept. The concept structure of gifted sixth grade students consists of using measurement units that cover different shapes. A small number of units is regarded as the lower concept, while a large number of units is regarded as the upper concept. 4. Straight line measurement of trapezoid area concept: The concept structure of gifted fifth grade students uses the concept of drawing a trapezoid as the lowest concept, from which the upper concepts are derived. For gifted fifth graders, there are 3 concept branches each composed of 2 concepts and another 3 concept branches each composed of 3 concepts. The concept structure of gifted sixth grade students uses the standard concept of drawing a trapezoid as the lowest concept, leading to the upper concepts. For gifted sixth graders, there are 3 concept branches each composed of 2 concepts and 6 concept branches each composed of 3 concepts. The pass rate of fifth graders was better than that of sixth graders for the concept of a trapezoid area formula, the inclusion relationship of a trapezoid area and the concept of drawing a trapezoid. 5. Estimating trapezoid area concept: Estimating the actual area of trapezoids was difficult for gifted fifth and sixth grade students. The concept structure consists of the lower concept, which involves using measurement units and estimating the number of units in a figure. This lower concept leads to the upper concept, which estimates the area of the trapezoid.

Abstract:
碩士
臺中師範學院
語文教育學系碩士班
91
The Influence of Read-Aloud Instruction to The Primary School Sixth-grade Students ABSTRACT The purpose of this research was to investigate the influence of read-aloud instruction to the elementary school sixth grade students, and compare the difference in ability of reading comprehension between the ordinary students and contestants, both accepted read-aloud instruction. This research was based on experimental research method. There were 158 students of an elementary school in Taichung involved in this experiment. Twenty-four of them were stratified random sampling to accept read-aloud instruction. Among these students, four were competitors and the others were not. A pre-test and a post-test were applied to all the students before and after read-aloud instruction. The following conclusions were obtained according to test results and relative information: 1. Comprehension ability of sixth grade students could be obviously promoted by read-aloud instruction: No significant difference was found between the students who accepted read-aloud instruction and those who did not in the pre-test; however, the comprehension ability of the students who accepted read-aloud instruction did better in the post-tests. 2. Comprehension ability of the ordinary students and contestants, both accepted read-aloud instruction, was significantly different: Comprehension ability of the contestants performed better than the ordinary ones, both in pre and post-tests. 3. Comprehension ability of the ordinary students was in progress obviously after accepting read-aloud instruction. 4. Comprehension ability of the contestants was not obviously in progress before and after accepting read-aloud instruction, probably because they already had the high ability. According to the results of this research, some suggestions were as follows: 1. Suggestions for schools and education al officials: The language ability of the pre-service teachers should be enhanced in order to promote their students’ ability of reading comprehension. 2. Suggestions for elementary school teachers: Promoting the self read-aloud ability was significant for teaching. Teachers must be aware of characters of students to design multifaceted learning actives, to make read aloud involved in language educations. 3. Suggestions for future research: The range of sampling could be extended to apply the methods of investigation and interview for the future research. Key Words: read aloud, read comprehension , phonological awareness

碩士
國立臺中教育大學
教師專業碩士學位學程
104
Algebra is a core of math education, it does help students not only to realize the math concepts and problem solving strategies, but also explain and create the math model. But, algebraic teaching is thought to be taught in junior high school as the focus. America rechecked the algebraic teaching in school, they thought it not a subject in junior high school, and it should be kept learning continuously. Therefore, it were put into primary school curriculum guidelines in USA ,England ,Singapore , Mainland China, and Japan. And the Ministry of Education in Taiwan also took into action in grade 1-9 curriculum since 2000. To develop the algebraic topic from competence indicators of grade 1-9 curriculum, We can find that using textual mark to indicate the relations between two quantities could be emphasized from lower grade students. The researcher think that it is beneficial for second grade students to increase graphical representation learning to strengthen the semantic resolution of students’ concept analysis and complex condition statement in word problems. This research use balance representation, line segment representation , capacity representation as the cognitive scaffolding for student undergo algebraic thinking, and take the second grade students in one primary school in Taichung. To discuss the difference after learning algebraic thinking with graphical representation, the main conclusion are as follows: 1.Balance, line and capacity representation did the significant elevation for students’ learning algebraic thinking. 2.For different type of add and subtract word problems, we can choose adequate representation type to learn. 3.Algebraic thinking teaching can be implemented from lower grade student. 4.Algebraic thinking teaching can enhance the solving problem ability for students. 5.Computer animation help students to figure out the relationships of quantities varying in algebraic thinking Keywords: algebraic thinking, representation, add and subtract word problems.

The principal objective of this study is to comprehend the learning achievements of primary school students in knowledge, attitude and behavior in soil and water conservation through the related teaching activity. It is anticipated that the obtained results are of great help for primary schools to move forward environmental education for disaster prevention. A total of 50 fifth-grade students in two classes of a primary school in Yun-lin County were tested. All the 50 students were divided into two groups; one is an experimental group with 26 students who received an extra soil and water curriculum, and the other is a control group with 24 students who only received general curricula. Findings from questionnaires surveys and statistical analyses showed that the knowledge, attitude and behavior in soil and water conservation did not differ in students’ gender, but they significantly differed in students’ previous environmental protection experiences and family social and economical status. This revealed that the students’ family background and previous environmental protection experiences can improve the knowledge of soil and water conservation learning achievements. In addition, findings from post-tests showed that the experimental group was better than the control group in the knowledge, attitude and behavior in soil and water conservation. The comparative findings of pre-tests and post-tests of the experimental group showed that the latter was superior to the former in the knowledge, attitude and behavior in soil and water conservation. Accordingly, a conclusion is made that the related teaching activity can improve the students’ knowledge, attitude and behavior in soil and water conservation.

Abstract:
碩士
國立屏東師範學院
國民教育研究所
91
Abstract The goals of this study are: 1. to know the types of rhetorical devices appeared in Chinese textbooks for grade 1 students of primary school; 2. to know the distribution of those rhetorical devices in Chinese textbooks of different versions; 3. to know the distribution of those rhetorical devices in Book I and Book II of Chinese for grade 1 students of primary school, and 4. to draw conclusions from the study results and submit suggestions for the reference in compilation of Chinese textbooks in the future. To attain the above goals, this study adopted the content analysis method and use the textbooks published by publishers such as Jen Lin, Kuang Fu, Nan Yi, Kang Hsuan and Han Lin for grade 1 students of primary school as the subjects of this study. The “Table of Types of Rhetorical Devices” revised by the researcher was used as a study tool to make analysis on rhetorical features of Chinese textbooks for grade 1 students of primary school. The study results are as the following: 1. In Chinese textbooks for grade 1 students of primary school, there are two kinds of rhetorical methods. One is “adjustment of ideograms”, which includes 7 kinds of rhetorical devices such as metaphor, symbolism, metonymy, contrast, imitation, exclamation, and hypothesis. They appeared in the Chinese textbooks 312 times in total. And the other one is “a design of graceful style”, which presented in 6 kinds of rhetorical devices such as climax, analogy, chain effect, antithesis, inlay, and palindrome and appeared in the textbooks 408 times. The latter appeared more frequently than the former. 2. In Chinese textbooks for grade 1 students of primary school, “repeation” appeared with the highest frequency (34.44%) and “symbolism” with the lowest frequency (only 0.28%). While the use of “hyperbole”, “quotation”, and “trope” were not found in those textbooks. 3. Among the five different versions, the rhetorical devices appeared with the highest frequency were found in Han Lin’s version, while the lowest frequency were found in Kang Hsuan’s version. The most types of rhetorical devices appeared in Han Lin’s version, and the least types of rhetorical devices appeared in Nan Yi’s version. 4. The rhetorical devices appeared 505 times altogether in Book II of the Chinese textbooks for grade 1 students of primary school, which was more than double times of Book I. In the aspect of types of rhetorical devices, there were only one difference between Book I and Book II in the use of “Symbolism” which was not found in Book I. This study submits the following suggestions according to the study results: 1. Suggestions for editors of textbooks: In terms of rhetorical devices, hyperbole and metaphor can be increased. Besides, the diverse styles of writing as well as various figures of speech should also be used. For opportunity of practice, the textbooks must be able to provide immediate practices. 2. Suggestions for teachers: In attitude, teachers must attach more importance to rhetoric teaching. In professional knowledge, teachers must possess the knowledge of rhetoric and teaching ability. In teaching, they may teach their students with “rhetoric combining reading and writing”. 3. Suggestions for future studies: The other aspects of rhetoric can be used as subjects of studies. Moreover, the researchers can also carry out their studies on the teaching methods of rhetoric or the correlation between rhetoric and writing ability. As to the subjects of studies, they can be expanded to students in other grades. As far as the tool of study is concerned, the rhetorical devices used in this study can be modified for the need of study in order to make the studies more perfect. The researchers may use interviews or questionnaire method to understand a teacher’s teaching, or just walk into the classroom to carry out their experimental studies. Abstract:
碩士
國立新竹教育大學
數理教育研究所科學教育教學碩士班
104
Abstract This is a cross-grade study which explores the influence that grade level and gender on students’ understanding of the burning and the current situation of alternative conceptions. The research samples were taken from fifth and sixth graders at four urban public primary schools in Hsinchu City , Taiwan. There were a total of 585 participants (318 male students and 267 female students), 278 of which were fifth graders and 307 of which were sixth graders. A two-tier diagnostic instrument of conceptions about ‘burning’ was employed. The data analysis methods included descriptive statistics, logistic regression and frequency. The important discoveries of this study are as follows: 1. Grade levels had a significant influence on students’ understanding of burning, removing combustible materials and isolating comburents. The higher the student’s grade level was, the better their understanding of the concept of ‘burning’ was. 2. While gender did not have any significant influence on students’ understanding of the concepts of combustible materials, ignition points, isolating comburents and temperature decreases, gender did have a significant influence on students’ understanding of the concepts of comburents and removing combustible materials. Male students performed better in the concept of comburents while female students fared better in the concept of removing combustible materials. 3. In regard to the learning of concepts related to ‘burning’, students found it less difficult to understand the concept of burning. However, it was harder for these students to understand the concepts of ignition points, isolating comburents, comburents and temperature decreases. The concept of removing combustible materials was most difficult to comprehend. 4. There were some shared alternative conceptions among students of different grades and gender regarding the major concepts of each chapter. Below are the major types of alternative conceptions:   (i) The concept of combustion: The most common misconception was the idea that because burning a rock would increase its temperature, if the burning time is long enough, the rock will start to burn. (ii) The concept of comburents: The fifth graders students generally believed that carbon dioxide supports combustion since carbon dioxide consists of oxygen. The sixth graders and both male and female students generally believed that carbon dioxide supports combustion since carbon dioxide consists of oxygen; and that carbon dioxide supports combustion as air, which consists of carbon dioxide, supports combustion. (iii) The concept of burning: The most common misconception was the idea that burning must involve the ignition of fire as materials do not burn in the absence of fire; and that burning must involve the ignition of fire since fire can increase the temperature. (iv) The concept of removing comburents: The most common misconception was the idea that blowing at a burning candle will put out the candle as the exhaled air generates carbon dioxide which encircles the fire. (v) The concept of isolating comburents: The most common misconception was the idea that soil or sand can be used to put out fires as soil or sand can enclose the fire so that it cannot burn because of the lack of space. (vi) The concept of decreases in temperature: The fifth and sixth graders as well as the male students generally believed that water can be used to extinguish fires in general, fear of water because the fire is a natural phenomenon; and that the water can be used to extinguish fires in general, because the water itself does not burn. The female students generally believed that water can be used to extinguish fires in general, fear of water because the fire is a natural phenomenon. This system architecture is mainly to build a system by which parents can keep abreast of their children's performance status; in the past, it was often only by the results of the paper to see their children's single subject performance; and because some parents do not have time to record every time of the child's performance, let each test scores only point performance, but cannot have the overall effect. Therefore, the system adopts the Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 to build the database system of examination scores and course tutoring, and uses Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 as the interface of program development tools to record all results of each student to the computer, so that parents can through the computer, mobile phones and other vehicles keep abreast of their children's performance situation. In 21st century, the era of computers and networks have been advanced to the wireless network technology and 4G telecommunications network technology. People have access to the Internet anytime and anywhere to access the website and download information, or engage in related work. Portable mobile devices improved from the large size of the specifications into a small mobile smart devices, and these vehicles allow people to go out more portable, more convenient to access information. "Cloud computing technology" saves a lot of equipment and cost, and has more extensive range of applications. Therefore, the network with the cloud technology integrated with school education and class management is indeed necessary.

Abstract:
碩士
亞洲大學
資訊工程學系碩士在職專班
105
It should be seen as a part of personality education. Children’s money matters are not a single independent disciplinary issue, The middle grades of primary school is the most plastic and educational period and, more importantly, a critical period for establishing self-concept and seeking peer recognition, while high-grade students, as adolescents, will face physical and mental development. If children's attitudes and ideas towards money can be understood, it will be able to lead children to have a correct understanding of money, cultivate the correct view of consumption and financial awareness at an early age. Appropriate monetary values should be a must for consumers, an emotional education goal for consumer education, and are also important to understand the children's money attitudes and consumer behavior. In this study, empirical research found that the attitude of primary school students to money is at a low level. From the financial point of view, financial habits and financial behavior scores were low, showing primary school students' financial habits and financial behavior were not yet well developed. In terms of spending, money was mainly used in entertainment and food, followed by supplies, and finally books. As to the relationships between the demographic characteristics and consumption decision-making and financial awareness, the children of different ages and grades showed significant differences in concepts of money with the older and higher-grade children showing more awareness. Different genders showed significant differences in consumption attitudes, with males stressing more on rational consumption compared with females. Gender, age and grade had significant differences in consumption concept, consumption motive and consumption category, financial management habits and financial behavior. The older, the higher and higher-grade the children were, the stronger financial sense they had. In the relationship between money attitudes and financial behavior, there was a significant positive correlation between the money view and whole values of primary school students and their financial management habits and financial behavior. There was no significant correlation between money source and financial management habits and financial behavior. In the relationship between consumption decision-making and financial behavior, there was a significant positive correlation between primary school students' consumption view and financial management habits and financial behavior, and students with rational consumption view had stronger financial management habits and financial behavior. While the consumption motive and consumption direction had significant correlation with their financial management habits and financial behavior.

Govender, Kistensamy. "An exploration of the reading choices of grade 4 learners in a public primary school in KwaZulu-Natal." Thesis, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10413/1134.

Full text
Abstract:
The advent of technology, especially the electronic media, heralded a new era of communication. Together with this boom came a host of reading challenges that has affected the learner and learner performance in the classroom. In the PIRLS report (2006) an emergence of a “non-reading” culture was noted as a result of poor performance by learners in South Africa. This research aims to explore the reading choices of grade 4 learners and why they choose to read what they read. The research was conducted at a public primary school in the Chatsworth region in KwaZulu Natal. This research used the qualitative case study approach which is set within the interpretivist paradigm. The main source of data generation was the semi-structured interviews of five learners and their respective parents. In addition to this method, two structured observations were conducted: observations of the reading- for- pleasure lessons and the LRE lessons. To conclude the data collection, a case scenario, where the learners created their own reading room, was used. This multi-pronged approach was adopted to fill in the information gaps and omissions that arose from the interviews. The analysis of the data indicates the following: girls read more frequently than boys, newspapers form the bulk of the reading at home, billboards are an interesting addition to their reading list, girls are intrinsically motivated. Findings show that the electronic media require higher levels of literacy skills to access the highly- textual society of the workplace. It becomes imperative that reading be motivated, taught and encouraged. The definition of literacy by the school and the home should be revisited and reviewed so that learners are not disadvantaged. Furthermore, the teachers and the librarians will thus have a greater degree of flexibility in selecting reading materials for the classroom and the library respectively. It becomes vitally important that we heed the warning of Alvermann (2001, p. 680) who argues that “the possibility that as a culture we are making struggling readers out of some adolescents who for any number of reasons have turned their backs on a version of literacy called school literacy is a sobering thought”
Thesis (M.Ed.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, 2009.

And, withal, this research investigates the correlation among the student's Internet experience, rumor distinguishing education, search strategy, and their answer to the experiment tasks. In order to analyze the rumor researching pattern which are used by these students, two rumor identification tasks were given; one is true, and the other one is false. The students were asked to search information on the Internet and write the answer down on a paper. The students' Internet searching behaviors were recorded by software from beginning to end. There are 69 valid samples in this experiment. From the questionnaire, these 69 students have similar Internet usage experience, academic achievement, and critical thinking skills. The result of this research shows the students who had rumor distinguishing education are skeptical to new information, and they do not blindly believe the new information given to them. In the mean time, they are capable of discerning the rationality and usability of the information from the Internet while doing the rumor researching tasks. However, the students who have never done the rumor distinguishing education are tend to believe new information given to them, and they hardly evaluate the authenticity of the information from the Internet. They can not utilize the tools to distinguish rumors. Further more, they can be misled by bogus information on the Internet. In the information explosion era, rumor distinguishing education is crucial. How to implement this education is an important research topic in the future.

"Experiences of limited English proficient grade eight learners in transition from township primary to English medium secondary schools." Thesis, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10210/1308.

Abstract:
D.Ed.
Apartheid and underdevelopment have shaped the educational system in South Africa. Previously South African public schools have been segregated according to race and separate education systems had been instituted for the four main population groups since the early foundations of educations. Racially mixed schools were prohibited. With the transformation of South Africa to a democratic country, where the African National Congress came to power in 1994, many changes took place. One of these was fundamental changes to the educational system with the admittance of learners of all races to previously racially segregated schools. Many parents from townships welcomed the opportunity to have their children attend schools in urban areas to expose them to education that they perceive to be of a higher standard than that in township schools. This movement of learners from all ethnic groups to English medium schools has necessitated some changes in these schools to accommodate the unique characteristics of learners from diverse cultural, linguistic and socio-economic backgrounds. It is important to note that these learners bring to the classroom languages and cultures previously underrepresented. Learners who come from different cultural or linguistic backgrounds are often seen as environmentally deprived simply because of their “being different” from the dominant culture. These learners begin their schooling with certain lags that may be due to the fact that they have a limited understanding of the language of instruction. These communication difficulties are exacerbated when the learner is confronted with a foreign culture that may cause anxiety and frustration as well as insecurity. This, in turn, becomes the educator’s problem, because learning is impeded under such circumstances. Grade eight learners in transition from township schools may also have added difficulties on account of their required adjustment to changes linked to their developmental phase, namely adolescence. The aim of this study was to explore and describe the experiences of LEP grade eight learners in transition from township schools to English multicultural schools in order to develop an intervention programme for educators and educational psychologists with regard of support for these learners. The research was conducted from the qualitative paradigm. It included a literature review, individual and focus group interviews with learner, their educators and their parents, essays by LEP learners and observation of these learners. A purposive sample of ten learners from each six English medium secondary schools in Gauteng was selected. Data analysis was deductive. Categories of meaning included the following: scholastic performance, emotional factors, behavioural factors, sociological factors, cultural factors, environmental factors, educator attitudes and, finally, transition and adjustment. The three groups of respondents agreed to a large extent on the experiences of LEP learners. An intervention programme, based on the findings of the study, was developed for educators and educational psychologists to render support for LEP learners in order to facilitate their learning and adjustment in multicultural schools. The principal areas of the programme aimed at providing and inclusive, inviting educational approach that will enable learners to feel included and valued in the school, while improving their learning and adjustment.
Prof. J. Abstract:
碩士
國立臺中教育大學
數學教育學系
95
The aim of the research was to study the statistical thinking development of fifth-grade elementary school students. The four constructs of primary statistical concepts: describing data, organizing and reducing data, representing data, and analyzing and interpreting data were studied using the “semi-structured interview” method and a questionnaire of students’ statistical thinking as the research tool to understand the statistical thinking development of fifth-grade students. The case students were three fifth-grade students from a country-side elementary school in Changhwa County. Furthermore, this research was compared with the theoretical framework which was addressed by Jones, Langrall, Mooney, Perry, Putt & Thornton (2000). The results of the performance for each case, compared with the theory of Jones et al., were as follows: First, each case student pondered the information, and distinguished the different types of results from the compound relationship between numbers in the material given students. When evaluating the validation of the results, they were able to provide multiple perspectives. Second, each case student was able to sort and interpreted the data. Besides, they attempted to characterize typicality (middle or mean) in order to interpret majority in the graph. Third, when each case student was asked to finish an uncompleted graph, he or she was able to complete it. With a valid result, they attempted to represent reorganized data. Forth, when each case student was asked to answer questions in the given material, he or she was able to provide many valid explanations and compared with all the data. However, the result was not able to tell any valid message. Although the case students were able to tell the relationship between information, they explained it incompletely. When they were asked to answer questions beyond the given material, their explanation wasn’t complete. Fifth, among the three cases, one had consistent thinking levels, and one had stable thinking levels. Sixth, among the four constructs, the students performed best in the describing data category and the representing data category, but performed worst in the organizing and reducing data category. The study result of the representing data category was corresponding with the theory of Jones et al.’s research. However, according to the result of Jones et al.’s research, the performance of analyzing and interpreting data was least developed in foreign children. The results of this research were able to provide advises for further research and for curriculum builders and teachers on teaching as well as developing instructional program.
