The byssal threads of marine mussels are elastomeric fibres with a great capacity for absorbing and dissipating energy. Up to 70% of the total absorbed energy can be dissipated in the byssus. Because byssal threads attach the mussel to hard inert surfaces in its habitat, they must combine the need to be good shock absorbers with appropriate matching of Young's modulus between living tissue and a hard sub–stratum such as stone—stiffnesses that can differ by five orders of magnitude. Recent data suggest that improved modulus matching and decreased stress concentration between different portions

Abstract Background Von Willebrand factor (VWF) self-association is key to hemostasis in high-shear regions of the vasculature. Further, in pathologic small vessel thrombosis, VWF can also self-associate, even on an intact endothelium in the absence of vessel injury (Dong et al. Blood, 2002, 100:40339). VWF self-association preferentially occurs between large multimers, which are more sensitive to shear-induced unfolding. This process is regulated by ADAMTS13 proteolysis, which converts circulating ultra-large VWF multimers to smaller, less-adhesive multimers(Sadler. Proc Natl Acad Sci USA, 20

Mechanisms enabling positional identity re-establishment are likely critical for tissue regeneration. Planarians use Wnt/beta-catenin signaling to polarize the termini of their anteroposterior axis, but little is known about how regeneration signaling restores regionalization along body or organ axes. We identify three genes expressed constitutively in overlapping body-wide transcriptional gradients that control trunk-tail positional identity in regeneration. ptk7 encodes a trunk-expressed kinase-dead Wnt co-receptor, wntP-2 encodes a posterior-expressed Wnt ligand, and ndl-3 encodes an anteri

As a product of protein catabolism, urea is moved around the body and through the kidneys for excretion. Although there is experimental evidence for concentrative urea transporters, these have not been defined at the molecular level. The SLC14 family are facilitative transporters, allowing urea movement down its concentration gradient. Multiple splice variants of these transporters have been identified; for UT-A transporters, in particular, there is evidence for cell-specific expression of these variants with functional impact [3]. Topographical modelling suggests that the majority of the vari

Layered structures of conductivity anomalies yield rotated electric fields at reservoir depths as large as source fields at the surface. Active-source electroseismic field tests imaged reservoirs 1800 meters deep. However, the required high-power, dipole sources mediate against these methods finding practical application in hydrocarbon exploration. The species it contains are important for their multiple uses as food (as part of several trophic chains), as vectors of other groups of organisms, for the extraction of substances, and as sentinels ofnatural and induced environmental changes. In this work, a comparative evaluation of the malacological biodiversity associated with different habitats in the Los Petenes Biosphere Reserve in Campeche and in eight coastal water bodies in southeastern Mexico was performed. To obtain data comparable to those that were used in a p

Using real-time spectroscopy and sucrose gradients with radioactively labeled virus, we show at 37°C, the formation of albumin-triggered, metastable uncoating intermediate of echovirus 1 without receptor engagement. This conversion was blocked by saturating the albumin with fatty acids. High potassium but low sodium and calcium concentrations, mimicking the endosomal environment, also induced the formation of a metastable uncoating intermediate of echoviru
