Abstract:
As cereal grain markets become more quality conscious, there is a continuing need to identify and distinguish between varieties. This handbook supplements the books listed below with descriptions of sixteen recent wheats, two triticales, one barley and nine oat varieties. The original handbooks give full explanations of the characteristics used to describe the varieties of the respective cereals.

Full text
Abstract:
With the continuing improvement of wheat, there is a need to provide assistance in the identification of newly registered wheat varieties. Sixteen such wheats are described in this Supplement according to the characters explained in 'Australian wheat varieties: identification according to plant, head and grain characteristics', Second Edition, by R. W. Fitzsimmons, R. H. Martin and C. W. Wrigley (CSIRO: Melbourne, 1983). In addition, descriptions of eight Australian triticales are provided in this Supplement as an appendix, in view of the increasing popularity of this close relative of wheat.

White, Erick. Contemporary Buddhism and Magic. Edited by Michael Jerryson. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199362387.013.34.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter provides an overview of the general substantive, formal, and social characteristics of that diverse assemblage of practices, objects, and actors identified as magical within contemporary Buddhist religious cultures. After critically reflecting on the concept of “magic,” the chapter first rethinks and re-describes the substantive character, social uses, and cultural idioms of Buddhist magic against the grain of scholarly discourses about religion and magic. The chapter then reviews changing academic approaches to the study of magic by Buddhist scholars. Finally, it explores some of the debates about magic in contemporary Asian societies and how these are embedded in social, economic, and political developments, which have transformed not only understandings of Buddhism but also the organization, practice, and consumption of activities defined as magical in the modern era.

Full text
Abstract:
Managing policy networks has become a major focus of both scholars and practitioners. The key characteristics of policy networks that shape their management are: trust, diplomacy, and reciprocity. The chapter identifies the conditions under which networks succeed and fail. It discusses four sour laws of network governance: managing the mix, the problem of many hands, the holy grail of coordination, and local ownership. It discusses the challenge of central agencies managing network portfolios, rather than individual networks. It identifies five central dilemmas: top-down versus bottom-up, organizational glue, rules of the game, collaborative leadership, and storytelling. The chapter concludes with five plausible conjectures on how to build and keep a network.

Abstract:
Society relies on agricultural commodities to feed and clothe the world’s population and play an important role in the economy as well as the financial markets. Unlike other commodities, agricultural commodities (grains and oilseeds, dairy, and softs) have unique characteristics that may include seasonality, perishability, and production dependent on weather conditions. Further, these products are an important part of international trade and are crucial in providing food security to ensure a stable supply of food worldwide. Financial investments within the agriculture industry have increased over the last several decades due in part to the commercialization of food production, the introduction of agricultural commodity index funds, and the increased investment in futures markets. This chapter introduces the major agricultural products, discusses price determinants and how to invest in agriculture, and highlights the differences between agricultural commodities and other commodities.

The main objective of this project is to be produce copper reinforced metal matrix composite (MMC) layers using micron sized AlN particles via friction stir processing (FSP) in order to enhance surface mechanical properties. Micro structural evaluation using Optical Microscopy (OM) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) indicated that an increase in traverse speed and a decrease in rotational speed cause a reduction in the grain size of different groove width (0,0.4,0.8,1.2 mm) of stir zone (SZ) for the specimens friction stir processed (FSPed) without AlN particles. It was found that upon addition of AlN particles, wear properties were improved. This behavior was further supported by SEM images of wear surfaces. Results demonstrated that the micro composite produced by FSP exhibited enhanced wear resistance and higher average friction coefficient in comparison with pure copper. Tensile properties and fracture characteristics of the specimens FSPed with and without AlN particles and pure copper were also evaluated. According to the results, the MMC layer produced by FSP showed higher strength and lower elongation than pure copper while a remarkable elongation was observed for FSPed specimen without AlN particles and been greatly developed by the use of AlN. Association of Scientists, Developers and Faculties, 2016.
