The present work has as main objective to point the passages of classic content presented in the medieval novel A Demanda do Santo Graal (portuguese edition of The Quest for the Holy Grail), a novel about chivalry of the first half of the thirteenth century, in order to explain the reason why exist these passages in the novel in question. Another objective is to show how the Middle Ages realize a retaking of values of classical Antiquity. especially with regard to the attitude of the medieval knight: this was the greek hero (or roman hero) as the ideal of bravery, virtue and loyalty; the imaginary of medieval cavalier (or "the imaginary created around of the medieval knight") was practically the same imaginary of greek hero (or roman hero), because of the similarity between the historical and literary context in which they both arose. The theory that underpins this work is the Teoria da Residualidade, created by Robe1to Pontes, critic, essayist and professor of Literature of the Universidade Federal doo Cearà - UFC. During the research, the concepts of imaginary and residual, proposed respectively by the Ãcole des Annales and Raymond Williams, a marxist literary critic, are also present. With regard to the methodology, it must be said that the research was conducted, at first, through readings of classics of the ancient Literature (Homer's Iliand and Odyssey, Vergil's Aeneid and Ovid's Metamorphoses) and portuguese novels about chivalry (Amadis de Gaula and, especially, A Demanda do Santo Graal) and through comparative literature, since there was a work of comparison between these texts. Finally, this research is relevant to the academic community because in mentions, in a medieval and christian novel (A Demanda do Santo Graal), an important aspect of the novels about chivalry: the classic, so much neglected by most scholars which deal with the novels of the breton cycle.

Full textThe thematic cutting of this dissertation are the Vita Apostolica and the sacramental mystery as life meaning and Christian mission for the people of the European Western World during the Central Middle Ages (11th to 13th centuries). The document to be analysed is the German version of the Arthurian romance The Quest of the Holy Grail, whose original German manuscript was compiled by the end of 13th century. The corpus corresponds to the codex 147 pertaining to the Bibliotheca Palatina Germaniae in Heidelberg, and this is no sheer translation of the original Bretonnic version to Middle German (Mittelhochdeutsch). The present source constitutes an original corpus, a properly German text, although linked up to the Vulgate Cycle (Pseudo-Gautier Map Cycle), which corresponds to the first prosification cycle entailing the Grail narratives. This study aims at scruting a central element of the imaginary concerning the historical experience of people of Western European World at the peak the Central Middle Ages. It is the sacrament, and the comprehension of the sacramental meaning of human life in the sphere of immanence builds up a relevant key to understanding and endowing concrete experiences with meaning. This can be achieved by means of aprehending the shaft element concernig their imaginary.

This work is the first step in a long process, which final goal is to develop a method that automatically allows you to go from a non-generic object-oriented program to a generic one. Preferably, support for such a conversion should be implemented in an Integrated Development Environment (IDE). An analogy could be drawn to the factorisation of classes, an operation supported by the most common IDEs today. As a first step in an ongoing process, this work is meant to be a non-trivial example for future analysis. The example project constitutes of a non-generic and a generic graph package, which is written in Java 1.4.2 and Java 5.0 respectively. The thesis describes the transition from the non-generic to the generic solution in a systematic and repeatable way. The idea is that this work could be applied to other languages and applications in the future, as well.

Full textThis master thesis of 30 hp has been performed in collaboration with the non-profit organizationCreative Entrepreneurs Solution (CES) based in Ondangwa in northern Namibia. MarieJohansson, the initiator of CES had identified a need for more energy efficient barbecues at theopen markets in Namibia since firewood constitutes a large cost for the actors selling food at themarket. The aim of this project has therefore been to develop a concept that decreases thefirewood consumption. To get further understanding of the conditions that apply in Namibia, a field study wasperformed during two months. User involvement has been an important part during the project, interviews and observations were therefore conducted at open markets in Ondangwa andneighboring cities. To wider the perspectives the whole process of cooking at markets and inhomes was studied. Also aspects like material and manufacturing methods were examined alongwith possible ways of distribution. The most important finding during the field study was that it is common to use two or more firesat the same time to be able to both barbecue and cook in pots. Firewood constitutes 18% of thetotal cost for barbecuing and cooking food at the open market and the vendors have an averageprofit of N$ 13 per day for selling barbecued meat. The findings from the field study resulted ina specification of requirements and thereafter a concept combining cooking and barbecuing wasdeveloped. The concept was demonstrated at the open market in Ondangwa to let the users give theiropinion on the concept and to get ideas of what refinements could be made. Some adjustmentswere made and a second prototype was built and tested in Sweden. Since the concept combinesboth cooking and barbecuing only one fire is needed which reduces the firewood consumptionwith approximately 30% meaning the vendors at the open market would save N$ 8 per day.

Full textReading the grail romances of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, two important observations may be made. First, there is a frequent link between late-twelfth- and thirteenth-century romance "literature" and the grail. Second, the grail is essentially an "object" which signifies something other than itself, which appeals to inquiry and meaning. This double observation immediately invites question concerning the nature of the connection between romance and the graal understood as a sign: in the intellectual climate of the period, is this connection fortuitous or, rather, in some way necessary ? my work tests the hypothesis of its necessity. Detailed analysis of scenes in which the grail appears, from the conte du graal to the estoire del saint graal, brings to light the central place of robert de boron's roman de 1'estoire dou graal. This pivotal work is not only at the junction of the rewritings that have modified chretien de troyes inaugural scene, but it also turns the grail into a spiritual sign, simultaneously relic {remembrance} and revelation (demonstrance) in so doing, this work transfers into the realm of romance fiction an image charged with the weighty and complex legacy of christian semiology, i propose that this transferral brings to literature the possibility of stating and representing the ineffably divine in the space of arthurian fiction, as well as the ability to directly confront the model of the scriptures. By laying claim to truth, imitating the efflorescence of the world in their narrative interlaces, and trying to shape human history and divine time, the grail romances attempt to put into place a writing which, because it is both inexhaustible and universal, is potentially infinite
