Abstract:
The study was conducted in order to determine the level of effectiveness of the English learner’s material on the grammatical competence of randomly selected Grade 9 bilingual students of a public secondary school in the Philippines. The students were subjected to grammar test and self-rating assessment of grammatical competence in participle, gerund and adverb before and after using the English learner’s material. Answering the survey questionnaire for assessing English instructional materials was limited to the perception of the respondents of the study. Based on the findings, Grade 9 students are not grammatically competent. The teacher’s guide for Grade 9 teachers are not effective in guiding them in the teaching of their lessons. The learner’s material used by the students are not effective in helping the students understand their lesson and activities. Thus, the study suggested that to improve the grammatical competence of the students, more relevant and useful supplementary materials should be made and given to them. These materials should address their needs or weaknesses. Teaching-learning materials should be constantly evaluated to better guide the teachers and effectively enhance the grammatical competence of Grade 9 bilingual students

Abstract:
The article deals with the role songs play in formation of the foreign grammatical communicative competence of young learners during the English lessons. The age groups are identified and peculiarities of English as a foreign language learning for every age group are outlined with special stress on young learners as the target age group. Young learners (students at the age of 6-10) have limited attention spam, that is why tasks have to be short, various and meaningful, grammar explanation should be avoided while grammatical patterns should be presented indirectly through interactive contexts. On the basis of identified needs and preferences in learning basic principles of presentation and practicing of grammatical patterns among young learners are revealed in the article. It is focused on teaching methods and techniques suitable for the target age group, among which total physical response teaching method and storytelling are chosen as the most productive ones. The article also reveals benefits of a foreign language acquisition rather than learning and overviews principles to be followed in order to create the process of acquisition in and beyond the classroom. Songs and short rhymes are chosen as an easy to remember way to present grammatical patterns. While singing songs young learners unconsciously remember not separate words but complete grammatically correct phrases or sentences and will be able to use them in other language context. Such way of presentation enables learners of primary school to develop grammatical communicative competence without direct learning. The article gives the procedure how to implement songs to develop grammatical competence of young learners.

Abstract:
The purpose of this article is to present a system for learning numerals in the 6th grade based on the methodology for compiling grammatical algorithms. The author examines the grammatical signs of the numerals’ types and the features of their spelling and declination, as well as the most grammatically difficult cases of numerals and nouns combinations. This article employs the collective and independent observation of students working with the grammatical material, its table systematization, and the algorithm compilation. The use of algorithms at the Russian language lessons creates the necessary linguistic foundation for improving the students’ speech culture; it also forms their algorithmic thinking and improves their spelling literacy.

Abstract:
The article focuses on one of the aspects of A. Krymskyi’s linguistic activity – development and implementation of morphological terms into scientific circulation as an integral part of Ukrainian grammatical terminology. The work of the scientist “Ukrainian grammar for students of higher classes of gymnasiums and seminaries of the Dnieper Region” (1907–1908) played an important role on normalization of Ukrainian morphological terminology. In the respective research, the stages of development of terms for parts of speech and grammatical categories on a vernacular basis, the processes of their competition on the way to normative consolidation in modern Ukrainian morphological terminology are traced. A. Krymskyi initiated the scientific research of the grammatical system of the language, raised the most important problem of term formation by Ukrainian grammarians – the ratio of borrowed and native Ukrainian terms. The grammar material offers terms for the grammatic designation of gender category (a four-grammatic composition, as in the modern Ukrainian language): masculine gender, feminine gender, neuter gender, and common gender. A linguist developed a seven-component system of cases – nominative, genitive, dative, accusative, vocative, instrumental and locative, which have entered modern scientific terminology unchanged. Some terms for parts of speech (numeral, verb) have also become generally accepted in the modern morphological term subsystem. The terminological material of the grammar testified to the distinct tendency of its author to create his own national terminology on a folk basis. Grammar had a great influence on the formation of grammatical thought in Ukraine, contributed to the enrichment of grammatical theory due to the introduction of new term units into scientific circulation.

Abstract:
The unique aspect of studying other languages is not only the acquisition of basic information, but also the development of communicative competency abilities, which are practical skills required in everyday practice or communication with representatives of foreign-speaking societies. Our present research focuses on the devlopment and implementation of a mixed method of learning for teaching grammatical material in English and German in Bukovyna schools during the first half of the twentieth century. The purpose of our research is to compare the prerequisites for the development and formation of the methodology of teaching English and German grammatical competence in Bukovyna schools between 1932 and 1940, as well as to reveal the peculiarities of the formation of reproductive and receptive grammatical skills in the specified territory and within the defined time for further study of listening, reading, and speaking. Consequently, instructional tactics demonstrated the right selection and organization limits. The development of fundamental grammar abilities is seen as critical in teaching foreign language grammar, since it serves as a foundation of grammatical information. The explanation of grammatical phenomena in German and English was given in the original language, supported by examples from the texts, and strengthened by the completion of exercises. The structure of the grammar appendices, which included extra exercises to reinforce grammatical constructions and the authors' personal explanations of the textbooks in addition to rules and tables, also made a difference in the way the grammatical material of the languages mentioned was taught. The most recent strategy in textbooks at the time was to promote communicating with native speakers (for example, via correspondence), which improved grammatical and lexical mastery of a foreign language. It came to light that acquiring grammatical content using a mixed technique was an approach for producing grammatically and lexically correct spoken speech. Practical application (speaking) demonstrates comprehension of the fundamental principles of grammar and their proper application. Authentic literary reading was essential for developing grammatical knowledge. Translation exercises examined different languages' grammatical structures, with the goal of improving the capacity to use them in context and accurately acquire them when speaking.

Abstract:
Abstract This explorative study focuses on grammatical taboos in German, morphosyntactic constructions which are subject to stigmatisation, as they regularly occur in standard languages. They are subjected to systematic experimental testing in a questionnaire study with gradient rating scales on two salient and two non-salient grammatical taboo phenomena of German. The study is divided into three subexperiments with different judgement types, an aesthetic judgement, a norm-oriented judgement and the sort of possibility judgement that comes closest to linguists’ understanding of grammar. Included in the investigated material are also examples of ordinary gradient grammaticality: unmarked, marked and ungrammatical sentences. The empirical characteristics of grammatical taboos are compared to those ordinary cases with the finding that they are rated at the level of markedness, but differ from ordinary markedness in that they produce a different pattern of between-subject variance. In addition, we find that grammatical taboos have a particular disadvantage under the aesthetic judgement type. The paper also introduces the concept of empirical grammaticality as a necessary theoretical cornerstone for empirical linguistics. Methodically, the study applies a mix of parametric and non-parametric methods of statistical analysis.

Abstract:
The term ellipsis, broadly construed, applies to syntactic structures that seem to host obligatory positions not filled with overt lexical materiaL More narrowly construed, the term refers to a hypothetical grammatical process that deprives lexical material of its phonetic content. So, ellipsis is a grammatical omission in contrast to other kinds of omission such as phonological, morphological, or semantic (Quirk, 1985: 883). Ellipsis can be distinguished by its recoverable nature, which means the insertion of grammatical elements results in a grammatical sentence (ibid., 885). .

Abstract:
In order to contribute to filling this gap, this project aims at developing activities/exercises regarding the category of grammatical gender for learners of Portuguese as a non-native language of the elementary (A1/A2), intermediate (B1/B2) and advanced (C1) proficiency levels. These activities/exercises were designed according to the results presented in the existing literature on gender and on learning grammatical gender. To this end, we start by presenting the semantic and formal characteristics that pose difficulties for learners at different levels of proficiency. Thus, starting with Corbett’s (1991) understanding of gender, and considering the descriptions of the gender system in Portuguese by Ferreira (2011 and 2019), Martins (2015 and 2020), Pinto (2015) and Lacsán (2015), the most frequent non-target categories are identified at each level of proficiency. In this way, activities aimed at each level of proficiency are based on the difficulties identified. These activities refer to topics foreseen in the Portuguese as a non-native language teaching reference framework, involving nouns with different morphological properties. These activities also systematically imply syntactic agreement and are, fundamentally, of the completion and multiple-choice types. Therefore, the literature review undergone ensures the validity of the activities/exercises in this project, that will contribute to the learning/acquisition of grammatical gender in Portuguese by non-native learners of different proficiency levels, as well as to reduce the scarcity of resources regarding this grammatical topic.

碩士<br>國立臺灣師範大學<br>華語文教學研究所<br>89<br>This thesis deals with the use of terminology and choices of “points of grammar” in elementary Mandarin Chinese materials. Although many researches of materials had been done, they only dealt with consolidating the materials and did not supply any concrete suggestion for textbook editors and school teachers. In addition, these researches also lacked theoretical base. For these reasons, besides consolidating the terminology and points of grammar that have been used in the materials, this thesis aims to establish an analytic framework from the perspectives of pedagogical grammar and combination of related linguistic theories and studies such as frequency studies. Through this framework, this thesis hopes to provide a set of terminology and points of grammar that may define elementary-level coursework in Mandarin Chinese

Abstract:
This paper challenges predictions made within the grammaticalisation framework about what can happen to grammatical material over time. We present two case studies — one from Greek and one from Sanskrit — which demonstrate that claims regarding the origin of grammatical material are too narrow, and that a broader view needs to be taken. We argue that (i) grammatical material can originate in ways other than the downgrading of lexical items; (ii) grammatical change does not unidirectionally move “down” the cline from less tightly bound to more tightly bound; movement “up” the cline is possible too; and (iii) if we focus just on one type of movement involving grammatical material — from less to more dependent — we can miss interesting types of grammatical change.

Abstract:
The scientific activity of the orientalist Giovanni Battista Raimondi is inextricably connected to the editorial projects of the Roman Typographia Medicea, which he directed from 1584 until his death. The present contribution focuses on unpublished grammars, lexica and other didactic materials of Syriac, Arabic, Persian and Turkish that were either produced or projected by Raimondi between the end of the 16th and the first decade of the 17th cent. A great number of grammatical and lexicographical notes, together with drafts and printing proofs are preserved in Florentine libraries as well as at the Vatican Library, witness of Raimondi’s approach in learning as well as teaching and describing Oriental languages. Such documents, with very few exceptions, have not been studied so far; we examine here this material from two different perspectives: the method for learning and self-teaching languages, on the one hand, and the organization and presentation of information in the didactic tools that he published (or prepared for publication) on the other.

Abstract:
Traditional grammars of Persian recognize two copular series for the affirmative indicative present tense, which we call the independent copulas and dependent copulas. The former has been considered as a full verb whereas the latter has been described as an enclitic. This paper explores the syntactic and phonological properties of the two copular series by looking into cases in which only one form is grammatical. We propose that the dependent copulas are not enclitics but have the same internal structure as the independent copulas, consisting of a null verbal stem and a person inflectional suffix. Through examinations of the syntactic operations of A-bar movement via association with an enclitic focus particle and ellipsis of the complement, as well as stress assignment in copular constructions, we demonstrate that nonparallel grammatical judgments arise from unsuccessful stress assignment, which results from the absence of overt material in the complement. This work contributes a new look at the copular system in Persian and beyond, which has not been extensively investigated in the literature.

Andrason, Alexander, and Bernd Heine. "Chapter 9. On the grammaticalization of ideophones." In Studies in Language Companion Series. John Benjamins Publishing Company, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.1075/slcs.232.09and.

Full text
Abstract:
Ideophones, like English bang or thud, are interactive expressions used as vivid depictions of sensory imagery of states, events, objects, or qualities (cf. Dingemanse 2011, 2012, 2018; Dingemanse &amp; Akita 2017; Andrason 2020, 2021). They are claimed to represent a universal class of linguistic forms – that is, any given language can be expected to have a set of them. That set may be highly limited, as is the case in many European languages, but it may as well be almost as large as that of lexical categories like nouns and verbs. There are thousands of ideophones in the spoken usage of languages like Korean, Japanese and Basque, which have 4500 or more of them (see Dingemanse 2018; Haiman 2018). Ideophones exhibit an ambivalent structural behavior. On the one hand, they have been described as grammatical forms that are syntactically unattached and prosodically set off from surrounding text material. On the other hand, they have also been described as morphosyntactically integrated adverbials, adjectivals, verbals, or nominals in a number of languages. Building on some earlier work (especially Dwyer &amp; Moshi 2003), the goal of the present paper is to look at ideophones from the perspective of grammaticalization theory with a view to accounting for this ambivalent behavior. It is argued in the paper that we are dealing here with a process that differs from ‘canonical’ grammaticalization in that the end-product of the process is a lexical rather than a grammatical form.

The article presents some considerations on the non-sexist use of the Italian language, which arise from an Italian L2 grammar, in which there is a specific section on the topic of gender language. The grammar takes into account national and supranational institutional documents that promote respect for differences and education against gender discrimination, then examining some Italian grammars to observe how some gender-sensitive linguistic phenomena are treated. The paper concludes by recalling the importance of reflecting in language education on the evolutionary phenomena of language and the use of an inclusive language, which considers the changes in Italian society, supported by the use of appropriate teaching materials.

Yoda, Sumikazu. "Variations in the Writing System and Style of the Modern Judaeo-Arabic of Libya." In Semitic Languages and Cultures. Open Book Publishers, 2025. https://doi.org/10.11647/obp.0445.07.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter explores the variations in the writing system and style of Modern Judaeo-Arabic from Libya (JAL), focusing on materials primarily from the 20th century. The study investigates the linguistic features and orthographic choices in JAL texts written in Hebrew script, emphasizing their stylistic and phonological diversity. The analysis highlights two main areas: the variability in orthographic representation, particularly the use of the Hebrew letter gimel to denote different sounds (e.g., ž, ġ, g), and the multiglossic nature of the language, where both literary and dialectal forms coexist. The research reveals that JAL lacks a standardized orthography, with considerable variation in the representation of sounds and grammatical features across texts. This variability reflects influences from Classical Arabic (CA), spoken Libyan Arabic, and even elements of Tunisian Arabic. For instance, literary texts employ formal CA structures and vocabulary, while dialectal words and phrases persist in informal contexts. Despite efforts to maintain stylistic consistency, even highly literary texts often contain dialectal features, highlighting the fluidity of linguistic registers in JAL. The chapter concludes that the diversity in writing systems and styles stems from a combination of local linguistic practices, historical publishing constraints, and cultural influences from neighboring regions like Tunisia. Further research is recommended to deepen understanding of JAL’s grammatical and lexical characteristics, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive analysis of its unique linguistic identity within the broader Judaeo-Arabic tradition.

Abstract:
Providing written corrective feedback in computer-mediated communication (CMC) environments has increasingly attracted the interest of both researchers and practitioners. In this chapter we reflect on our study, Shintani &amp; Aubrey (2016), which examined the comparative effects of synchronous and asynchronous written corrective feedback on the accurate production of target grammatical features in a guided writing task. The methodological challenges we experienced related to (a) operationalizing synchronous and asynchronous written corrective feedback; (b) designing treatment materials and procedures; (c) testing; and (d) analyzing the data. In each decision, we tried to find a balance between experimental control and ecological validity. This chapter not only provides a window into how we overcame these challenges but also gives suggestions for research methodologies that can be used in future studies to explore the provision of written corrective feedback through online technologies.

Abstract:
This paper reports on data from a questionnaire survey conducted in a target group of students in doctoral study programs in the disciplines of product/industrial design, photography, and audio-visual studies. The survey aimed at subjective language needs and wants in the knowledge of specific lexis, choice of grammatical tense, lexical bundles, use of verbs in the passive voice, and appropriate choice of formal register, structure, and inner text organisation. The survey measured the level of confidence when identifying selected language means of style and their rhetoric functions in the genre of an academic journal article. The data indicate the language needs of the respondents to become more familiar with the wording of statements and the question of choosing appropriate stylistic language means. The knowledge gained can be applied in the creation of materials for teaching academic writing.

Abstract:
The wide range of properties covered by the manufacturable fiber-matrix combinations of composite materials, along with their directional property characteristics, provides designers with material selection flexibility during designing composite material products. Meeting multiple property goals, however, complicates the design process as both the composite material selection and the component shape formation become complicated because the loading conditions and matrix calculations are needed to determine theoretical value of composite material properties. This paper presents a grammatical approach to simultaneously consider the shape and selection composite materials for a load-bearing component. Selection of composites involve determining the fiber and matrix, their volume fraction, and number of layers in different location of the component. A hip-replacement joint is designed using composite material to illustrate the approach.

Based on the material of such monographs, as “Yu zhu”, “Xu zi shuo”, “Zhu zi bian lüe” and “Jing zhuan shi ci” the interpretation of lexical units’ meanings is considered. Examples from the dictionaries are given, these examples are translated into Russian. The facts of the works under study show that the scholars of traditional Chinese linguistics clearly distinguish between lexical and grammatical meanings of hieroglyphic signs, also distinguish 122 between using hieroglyphic sigh as a content word and as a function one, periodically (not systematically) interpret grammatical meanings by explaining its relation to the lexical meaning. Such facts represent the first attempts to describe the grammaticalization of Chinese words.

Abstract:
The corpus study of grammatical variation is not considered a complex task anymore. However, the corpus annotations used to solve the task are based on specific theoretical assumptions which do not necessarily cover all possible variants found in empirical material. On the example of the German preposition wegen and its variation in case government this article shows why available tools in corpus managers can be insufficient. An experiment is presented in which data obtained from annotated corpora are automatically labeled using a developed algorithm. An analysis of the corpus material showed that the preposition wegen primarily governs the genitive (about 60% of all uses). The dative, which is recognized by modern linguistics as a conventional variant, is relatively rare (5%). Additionally, the analysis also revealed that for 35% of nouns following wegen case cannot be determined, a phenomenon which is not mentioned in the corresponding dictionary entries of all lexicographic sources known to us. Thus it is not possible to identify the proportion of such underdetermined instances of case government using only the existing annotation of the analyzed corpora, since it did not include tags for nouns with no clear case assignment.

Abstract:
Research into Automatic Exercise Generation (AEG) contributes new tools aimed at reducing the barrier to creating practice material, but few have been deployed in actual instruction with real learners. The present study extends previous work by employing AEG technology in instruction with L2 learners to evaluate its pedagogical effectiveness. Thirty-two second language learners of French were assigned to either a treatment condition, who practised with generated exercises, or a control condition that did no extra work. Both groups completed pre-, post-, and delayed post-tests. Participants in the treatment condition also completed questionnaires that elicited data on their in-practice emotions and the situations in which they arose. Our preliminary results suggest that AEG-based instruction can be pedagogically effective and support positive learning experiences, help to identify aspects of the instruction that could be improved, and suggest that a peer review mechanism could have an important role in future CALL platforms that use generated exercises.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to a meaning-oriented approach to the study of Russian vocabulary at RFL classes which combines synonymous possibilities of various linguistic units of a certain semantic field (in particular, the semantic field “Laughter”), including idiomatic and free word combinations with the key lexemes of the field, their morphological changes, syntactic and semantic derivatives and phraseological units. The research gradually demonstrates the ways of presenting the main lexical material depending on studied meanings, gives the examples of their use in the National Corpus of Russian language, clarifies the features of their semantics and stylistics, provides grammatical restrictions in the studied constructions (case form, verbal control, etc.). The author demonstrates the examples of exercises to consolidate the educational material and practicing both receptive and productive speech actions.
