Abstract:
This study of the communication of the Livonian Branch of the Teutonic Order with the king of Denmark and the Grand Duke of Lithuania focuses on diplomatic cooperation between the Order’s Livonian and Prussian branches. Though the Grand Master largely represented the Livonian Master in communication with the Danish king during the first half of the fifteenth century, this took place because the Danish king preferred to communicate Livonian matters to the Grand Master. In the second half of the century, the king addressed the Livonian Master directly and the Grand Master lost his role as a mediator of communication between the king and the Livonian Master. The communication with the Grand Duke of Lithuania can be described as forming a triangle, where both the Grand Master and the Livonian Master were in frequent correspondence with the Grand Duke and would represent each other if needed. The second half of the fifteenth century saw a tendency toward excluding the Grand Master from communication between the Livonian Master and the Grand Duke, probably due to the diverging political goals of the Prussian and the Livonian branches of the Order. As a concluding generalization, one can say that cooperation between these two branches of the Teutonic Order in diplomatic correspondence was largely determined by the preferences of their partners in communication as well as by the compatibility of their respective political stances.

Abstract:
On some aspects of the diplomatic traffic between the Grand Master of the Teutonic Order and Emperor Sigismund of Luxembourg The diplomatic traffic between the Grand Master of the Teutnic Order and Emperor Sigismund of Luxembourg was carried out according to the common practices of diplomacy in late medieval Europe. Nevertheless, this topic deserves further exploration due to Sigismund’s efforts to impose suzerainty upon the Grand Master and the Teutonic Knights. This issue influenced their mutual relations after Sigismund’s election as Roman-German King in 1410/1411. There are numerous surviving sources, especially in the archive of the Teutonic Order in Berlin (GStA PK), such as legation’s instruction, dispatches and, last but not least, the political correspondence between the Grand Master and Emperor Sigismund. These sources can shed light not only on the complicated diplomatic relation between above-mentioned two entities, but also, due to richness of their content, on late medieval diplomacy in general. Based upon the research findings by Klaus Neitmann, who explored the Order’s legation exclusively, this paper tries to expand the field of research by including the legations of Sigismund. From this perspective only several selected aspects of the topic are examined in the study: 1) defining a legation (foreign mission) and its characteristic features; 2) the diplomatic traffic between the Grand Master and Sigismund of Luxembourg from a prosopographical perspective; and 3) the personal composition and communication at the court of Sigismund. The richness of sources makes new questions possible concerning not only this specific diplomatic traffic, but also late medieval diplomacy in general as well. However, the definite answers might be delivered after compiling a thorough list of all legations from both sides, which in light of the large number of primary sources must be reserved for another study.

Abstract:
The figure of the 'nabob' in British graphic satire of the late eighteenth century symbolized domestic anxieties concerning a foreign, ad hoc empire in India. Characterized through uncontrollable greed, untreatable diseases and uninhibited passions, India had been portrayed in Britain through a rhetoric of excess. Embodied in the nabob, these corruptive forces would travel to the West to infect the metropole. I argue that closer scrutiny of graphic satire reveals that British critics understood the true source of Indian excess to be Britain itself. Methodologically, Thomas Rowlandson's images in The Grand Master, or Adventures of Qui Hi? in Hindostan (1816) are considered as both a cohesive unit of nabob representation and as a foundation from which discussions of other nabob imagery can be launched. This approach reveals significant departures in how we view the reception of the imperial project in the metropole, the function of representations of Anglo-Indians, the production method of the 'illustrated book' and the characterization of Rowlandson's artistic production. Each chapter represents a step on the nabob's progress: In Chapter 1, Lord Moira is revealed as a bellicose representative of an overly ambitious class, bent on the ruin of the metropole through the destruction of India. In Chapter 2, depictions of nabobs engaged in excessive drinking, the results of excessive spending and in displays of excessive idleness are examined, illustrating the criticism of questionable imperial agents. In Chapter 3, the dominant strategies of representing imperial illness in India are examined, revealing the decline of the liminal, self-interested figure who could assume the physical and psychological characteristics of the East. In Chapter 4, the negotiation of British masculine identities, created through Company-state policies and processes and justified through conflict with allegedly Eastern excess, are juxtaposed with the reality and the complexity of Anglo-Indian relationships with women. Through this progress, the nabob is exposed as a modern figure created in order to negotiate British national identity amidst significant imperial anxiety. This dissertation contributes to postcolonial debates on empire by revealing a critical, metropolitan response to the ideological function of satirical representations of Anglo-Indians.

New Urbanism has been described as an urban design movement promoting the master planning and development of communities that have walkable, human-scale neighborhoods while integrating the necessary elements of modern life such as vehicular traffic and parking, wide ranging retail offerings, and diverse employment centers. As its core, New Urbanism attempts to counter the multitude of problems stemming from the rise of automobile transport and resulting mass migration to the suburbs in the 20th Century, including sprawl, a lost sense of local community, lack of diversity, untenable housing and transportation costs, arduous commuting times, negative environmental impacts, and harmful effects to individuals' physical health. There have been a number of smaller -- "town-scale" -- New Urbanist developments built since the movement gained traction and formal organization in the 1980s. These communities have proved their mettle not only as positive social engineering experiments, but also as profitable business models for real estate entrepreneurs. The context for New Urbanism has changed greatly over the past several decades. Today, design and development firms are undertaking the construction of secondary cities and urban nodes with housing units numbered in the tens of thousands and areas measured in hundreds of acres. These "city-scale" developments carry risks and uncertainties that eclipse the rather controllable and largely foreseeable nature of small town development by requiring exponentially larger amounts of capital over periods typically extending more than a decade. The phasing in of the wide array of product types call for clear vision, steady leadership, and stalwart relationships, despite the real challenges of fickle political support, unpredictable economic cycles, and increasingly opportunistic labor pools. The thesis will primarily focus on Miasteczko Wilanow, a master planned community in southern Warsaw, Poland. Supplemental research, through comparisons to Kentlands, Maryland and Pinehills, Massachusetts, will be presented. Through on-site interviews and analysis of historical documentation, the thesis will aim to 1) present the initial considerations and intentions of Miasteczko Wilanow; 2) chart the development's progress and evolution from groundbreaking to present day; and 3) present conclusions and potential solutions towards better planning and implementation of similar "city-scale" projects.

Abstract:
The present essay is a dissertation for a Mastering Degree presented in the Program for Post Graduation in Science of the Human Movement and has as its main aim to understand the process of subjectivity of former professional football players during the period they stop being professional players and become master football players. To understand how they rebuild their subjectivity as well as the way they recover the meaning of "being" a football player, besides understanding how the processes of desterritoliaty and reterrioliaty they go through when they leave professional pitches and start playing in master pitches occur. The main methodology for the mentioned investigation was based in Oral History with ethnographic inspirations in order to get the needed information. They are people endowed with football related subjectivityin constant transformation. It is a kind of subjectivity (re)built along the years they had played in football pitches all over the world and, in some way it still exists as a rebuilding process being constantly reterritorialized. It is not just the reproduction adapted from the football world but another possible universe inside this same world. I admit that many issues have been raised in this essay and all of them deserve special attention. But for now, that is all I have got. My intention is not t stop the research at this point, but insert reticences with the stong belief that a lot of other studies will point to the same subject.

Abstract:
Although the Standard Model (SM) of particle physics describes observations well, there are several shortcomings of it. The most crucial of these are that the SM cannot explain the origin of neutrino masses and the existence of dark matter. Furthermore, there are several aspects of it that are seemingly ad hoc, such as the choice of gauge group and the cancellation of gauge anomalies. These shortcomings point to a theory beyond the SM. Although there are many proposed models for physics beyond the SM, in this thesis, we focus on grand unified theories based on the SO(10) gauge group. It predicts that the three gauge groups in the SM unify at a higher energy into one, which contains the SM as a subgroup. We focus on the Yukawa sector of these models and investigate the extent to which the observables such as fermion masses and mixing parameters can be accommodated into different models based on the SO(10) gauge group. Neutrino masses and leptonic mixing parameters are particularly interesting, since SO(10) models naturally embed the seesaw mechanism. The difference in energy scale between the electroweak scale and the scale of unification spans around 14 orders of magnitude. Therefore, one must relate the parameters of the SO(10) model to those of the SM through renormalization group equations. We investigate this for several different models by performing fits of SO(10) models to fermion masses and mixing parameters, taking into account thresholds at which heavy right-handed neutrinos are integrated out of the theory. Although the results are in general dependent on the particular model under consideration, there are some general results that appear to hold true. The observ- ables of the Yukawa sector can in general be accommodated into SO(10) models only if the neutrino masses are normally ordered and that inverted ordering is strongly disfavored. We find that the observable that provides the most tension in the fits is the leptonic mixing angle θ2l3, whose value is consistently favored to be lower in the fits than the actual value. Furthermore, we find that numerical fits to the data favor type-I seesaw over type-II seesaw for the generation of neutrino masses.

Abstract:
Manuel Arenzana was the last chapel master of the Cathedral of Puebla from 1791 to 1821. Arenzana composed sacred music for the Cathedral of Mexico, as well as operas for the Coliseo Theater in Mexico City. Missa à 4 Compuesta a Grande Orquesta in D Major was composed for double choir and big orchestra, which included viola, clarinets and bassoon. This work is a scholarly edition of previously unedited manuscripts and it is collocated with two late copies located in Oaxaca. Also, the actas capitulares from the Cathedral of Puebla, during the period when Arenzana worked as chapel master (1791-1821), and the documents from the Archivo General de Indias revealed new biographic data, which is confronted with a review of the existing biography. Additionally, the music catalogue in New Spain is included with the repertoire of the archives of Cathedrals from Puebla, Morelia, and Oaxaca, two parishes, and the Basílica de Santa María de Guadalupe.

In this dissertation we will approach the lepton and barion number simmetries as low energy manifestation of more fundamental theories at higher energies. By using effective operators we investigate the possibility of generating reasonable mass terms for leptons as well as suppressed proton lifetime in the Standard Model. We also look at the proton decay processes in a specific grand unified theory (the minimal SU(5)) and comment about the experimental bounds on proton lifetime from Superkamiokande. Finally, we consider a simple gauge extension of Standard Model, the minimal SUC(3) SUL(3) UN(1) model, pointing some drawbaces in this model concerning lepton masses and proton lifetime. We study how it is possible to diminish its scalar content and solve the lepton mass and proton decay issues.

Abstract:
The federal law nº 10.257, 10th of July, 2001, in the articles 182 and 183 of the Brazilian Constitution, regulated and established the "general directives of urban politics". It's the Estatuto da Cidade which explains on its 40th article: "the master plan, approved by municipal law, is the basic tool for the political expansion and development". Nevertheless, according the 2nd paragraph of the referred article, "The range of the planned urban areas shall consider the territory as a whole". The territory of the majority of the Brazilian cities is not necessarily and exclusively urban. A significant portion of their territory is utilized for activities related to primary sector and in some other cases are peculiar areas for its natural resources (dunes, forestland, mangroves, wellheads, etc.). So, the Estatuto da Cidade promulgation, even though not directly, introduces the need of planning also in the rural areas and/or non-urban ones. It's an extremely important innovation, considering that in Brazil, master plans traditionally were limited to the width of urban perimeter. As a consequence of the campaign led by the Ministry of the Cities which has begun in 2004, a great number of urban plans were made in Brazil until nowadays. The main idea of this research is to find out how these master plans ranged the rural municipal areas and non-urban areas and, also, what relations will take them to all these different degrees of deepening. Therefore, a method of analyses was created, which has as object the text of the laws from sample cities, located on the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. By data cross-checking, searched on the law texts, with the profile built on statistics indicators for the cities researched, this study shows a read-out of the deepening levels that have been reached by the plans on rural areas issues.

Abstract:
Abstract: With Marseille Housing Unit, the Atelier Le Corbusier began a transformation of its staff and methods. Frequently, this phase is known as Le Grand Atelier, receiving new challenges during its ending, and conceiving new elements for an “ineffable space”. With undefined boundaries, the Patient Research involved a transitional frame of mind opposing Le Corbusier to his own proceedings and to some of his collaborators. Pejoratively, the master named them as dattiers (datepalms), due to their alleged arrogance and low productivity. This work reconstructs several aspects of the internship of some South American collaborators on Le Corbusier at Paris between 1948 and 1959. Their participation was extended and intense, allowing them to reach, in some cases, the status of coordinators, and engaging works in all the scales. Even though just Augusto Tobito was directly called as dattier, his Colombian coworkers shared his rebellion, autonomy or skills. That is why we also use that adjective for them. We intend to create a complementary story for plenty of narratives about projects and influences of the French-Swiss architect in the Andes territory.Palabras clave: Le Corbusier; arquitectos modernos suramericanos; planes urbanos; proyectos de habitación. Abstract:
ABSTRACT Practiced by millions of people around the world, taekwondo has quickly become a popular sport due to its technical innovation and spectacularity. The goal is to objectify the refereeing and make taekwondo even more attractive to the general public. Comparing technical performance in competitions spanning a decade would shed more light on the specific endurance needed by the modern taekwondo fighter. The aim of our study was to determine how the technical (quantitative and qualitative) indicators in competition have changed for the elite taekwondo athlete since the introduction of the electronic scoring system in 2009. The video analysis we performed on Sofia Grand Prix 2019 enabled us to compare the data with previously reported such from 2009. We discovered that the types of kicks used by the competitors amounted to 13 (2009) and 28 (2019). The variation analysis we performed showed that the average strikes per match were 76 (2009) and 193 (2019) with an average per round amounting at 25.33 (2009) and 64.33 (2019). The match-es with the most kicks 121 (2009) 208 (2019) were compared, as well as those with the least hits 40 (2009) and 108 (2019). In 2009, the competitors performed a kick every 4.73 seconds, while in 2019 every 1.86 seconds. Based on our findings we concluded that the number of kicks in a taekwondo match has increased twofold compared to 10 years ago, which means that the requirements for speed and strength endurance are even greater. Although the introduction of the electronic scoring system in taekwondo has led to a significant increment in the number and types of techniques in the taekwondo match, the technical indicators of the winners demonstrate that it is not necessary for the athlete to master the whole set of kicking techniques. It is enough to know 3 to 4 kicking techniques but to apply them successfully.

Abstract:
The city of Porto Velho, capital of Rondonia, is one of the main cities in northern Brazil. His occupation came from the construction of the railway Madeira - Mamore, in the early twentieth century. The temporary occupation was transformed into a city with an urban layout and architecture with American style, inserted in the Amazon presents problems of urban planning that comes from decades of applicatio ns without thoughts urban defended and submitted by various thinkers. This paper discusses the application of thinking about urban developed throughout the twentieth century in Porto Velho, through critical analysis of master plans and a comparison, more g enerally, with the Master Plans of Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul . As a final consideration, we arrive at an idea of the master plans of Porto Velho are, for the most part, on paper, they are the first additions of 1972, not a critical analysis of the actual s ituation of the city

Abstract:
The “Novel streaming potential (SP) and thermal sensor techniques for monitoring water and nutrient fluxes in the vadose zone” project ended Oct. 30, 2015, after an extension to complete travel and intellectual exchange of ideas and sensors. A significant component of this project was the development and testing of the Penta-needle Heat Pulse Probe (PHPP) in addition to testing of the streaming potential concept, both aimed at soil water flux determination. The PHPP was successfully completed and shown to provide soil water flux estimates down to 1 cm day⁻¹ with altered heat input and timing as well as use of larger heater needles. The PHPP was developed by Scott B. Jones at Utah State University with a plan to share sensors with Shmulik P. Friedman, the ARO collaborator. Delays in completion of the PHPP resulted in limited testing at USU and a late delivery of sensors (Sept. 2015) to Dr. Friedman. Two key aspects of the subsurface water flux sensor development that delayed the availability of the PHPP sensors were the addition of integrated electrical conductivity measurements (available in February 2015) and resolution of bugs in the microcontroller firmware (problems resolved in April 2015). Furthermore, testing of the streaming potential method with a wide variety of non-polarizable electrodes at both institutions was not successful as a practical measurement tool for water flux due to numerous sources of interference and the M.S. student in Israel terminated his program prematurely for personal reasons. In spite of these challenges, the project funded several undergraduate students building sensors and several master’s students and postdocs participating in theory and sensor development and testing. Four peer-reviewed journal articles have been published or submitted to date and six oral/poster presentations were also delivered by various authors associated with this project. We intend to continue testing the "new generation" PHPP probes at both USU and at the ARO resulting in several additional publications coming from this follow-on research. Furthermore, Jones is presently awaiting word on an internal grant application for commercialization of the PHPP at USU.
