Abstract:
The figure of the 'nabob' in British graphic satire of the late eighteenth century symbolized domestic anxieties concerning a foreign, ad hoc empire in India. Characterized through uncontrollable greed, untreatable diseases and uninhibited passions, India had been portrayed in Britain through a rhetoric of excess. Embodied in the nabob, these corruptive forces would travel to the West to infect the metropole. I argue that closer scrutiny of graphic satire reveals that British critics understood the true source of Indian excess to be Britain itself. Methodologically, Thomas Rowlandson's images in The Grand Master, or Adventures of Qui Hi? in Hindostan (1816) are considered as both a cohesive unit of nabob representation and as a foundation from which discussions of other nabob imagery can be launched. This approach reveals significant departures in how we view the reception of the imperial project in the metropole, the function of representations of Anglo-Indians, the production method of the 'illustrated book' and the characterization of Rowlandson's artistic production. Each chapter represents a step on the nabob's progress: In Chapter 1, Lord Moira is revealed as a bellicose representative of an overly ambitious class, bent on the ruin of the metropole through the destruction of India. In Chapter 2, depictions of nabobs engaged in excessive drinking, the results of excessive spending and in displays of excessive idleness are examined, illustrating the criticism of questionable imperial agents. In Chapter 3, the dominant strategies of representing imperial illness in India are examined, revealing the decline of the liminal, self-interested figure who could assume the physical and psychological characteristics of the East. In Chapter 4, the negotiation of British masculine identities, created through Company-state policies and processes and justified through conflict with allegedly Eastern excess, are juxtaposed with the reality and the complexity of Anglo-Indian relationships with women. Through this progress, the nabob is exposed as a modern figure created in order to negotiate British national identity amidst significant imperial anxiety. This dissertation contributes to postcolonial debates on empire by revealing a critical, metropolitan response to the ideological function of satirical representations of Anglo-Indians.

New Urbanism has been described as an urban design movement promoting the master planning and development of communities that have walkable, human-scale neighborhoods while integrating the necessary elements of modern life such as vehicular traffic and parking, wide ranging retail offerings, and diverse employment centers. As its core, New Urbanism attempts to counter the multitude of problems stemming from the rise of automobile transport and resulting mass migration to the suburbs in the 20th Century, including sprawl, a lost sense of local community, lack of diversity, untenable housing and transportation costs, arduous commuting times, negative environmental impacts, and harmful effects to individuals' physical health. There have been a number of smaller -- "town-scale" -- New Urbanist developments built since the movement gained traction and formal organization in the 1980s. These communities have proved their mettle not only as positive social engineering experiments, but also as profitable business models for real estate entrepreneurs. The context for New Urbanism has changed greatly over the past several decades. Today, design and development firms are undertaking the construction of secondary cities and urban nodes with housing units numbered in the tens of thousands and areas measured in hundreds of acres. These "city-scale" developments carry risks and uncertainties that eclipse the rather controllable and largely foreseeable nature of small town development by requiring exponentially larger amounts of capital over periods typically extending more than a decade. The phasing in of the wide array of product types call for clear vision, steady leadership, and stalwart relationships, despite the real challenges of fickle political support, unpredictable economic cycles, and increasingly opportunistic labor pools. The thesis will primarily focus on Miasteczko Wilanow, a master planned community in southern Warsaw, Poland. Supplemental research, through comparisons to Kentlands, Maryland and Pinehills, Massachusetts, will be presented. Through on-site interviews and analysis of historical documentation, the thesis will aim to 1) present the initial considerations and intentions of Miasteczko Wilanow; 2) chart the development's progress and evolution from groundbreaking to present day; and 3) present conclusions and potential solutions towards better planning and implementation of similar "city-scale" projects.

Abstract:
The present essay is a dissertation for a Mastering Degree presented in the Program for Post Graduation in Science of the Human Movement and has as its main aim to understand the process of subjectivity of former professional football players during the period they stop being professional players and become master football players. To understand how they rebuild their subjectivity as well as the way they recover the meaning of "being" a football player, besides understanding how the processes of desterritoliaty and reterrioliaty they go through when they leave professional pitches and start playing in master pitches occur. The main methodology for the mentioned investigation was based in Oral History with ethnographic inspirations in order to get the needed information. They are people endowed with football related subjectivityin constant transformation. It is a kind of subjectivity (re)built along the years they had played in football pitches all over the world and, in some way it still exists as a rebuilding process being constantly reterritorialized. It is not just the reproduction adapted from the football world but another possible universe inside this same world. I admit that many issues have been raised in this essay and all of them deserve special attention. But for now, that is all I have got. My intention is not t stop the research at this point, but insert reticences with the stong belief that a lot of other studies will point to the same subject.

Abstract:
Although the Standard Model (SM) of particle physics describes observations well, there are several shortcomings of it. The most crucial of these are that the SM cannot explain the origin of neutrino masses and the existence of dark matter. Furthermore, there are several aspects of it that are seemingly ad hoc, such as the choice of gauge group and the cancellation of gauge anomalies. These shortcomings point to a theory beyond the SM. Although there are many proposed models for physics beyond the SM, in this thesis, we focus on grand unified theories based on the SO(10) gauge group. It predicts that the three gauge groups in the SM unify at a higher energy into one, which contains the SM as a subgroup. We focus on the Yukawa sector of these models and investigate the extent to which the observables such as fermion masses and mixing parameters can be accommodated into different models based on the SO(10) gauge group. Neutrino masses and leptonic mixing parameters are particularly interesting, since SO(10) models naturally embed the seesaw mechanism. The difference in energy scale between the electroweak scale and the scale of unification spans around 14 orders of magnitude. Therefore, one must relate the parameters of the SO(10) model to those of the SM through renormalization group equations. We investigate this for several different models by performing fits of SO(10) models to fermion masses and mixing parameters, taking into account thresholds at which heavy right-handed neutrinos are integrated out of the theory. Although the results are in general dependent on the particular model under consideration, there are some general results that appear to hold true. The observ- ables of the Yukawa sector can in general be accommodated into SO(10) models only if the neutrino masses are normally ordered and that inverted ordering is strongly disfavored. We find that the observable that provides the most tension in the fits is the leptonic mixing angle θ2l3, whose value is consistently favored to be lower in the fits than the actual value. Furthermore, we find that numerical fits to the data favor type-I seesaw over type-II seesaw for the generation of neutrino masses.

Abstract:
Manuel Arenzana was the last chapel master of the Cathedral of Puebla from 1791 to 1821. Arenzana composed sacred music for the Cathedral of Mexico, as well as operas for the Coliseo Theater in Mexico City. Missa à 4 Compuesta a Grande Orquesta in D Major was composed for double choir and big orchestra, which included viola, clarinets and bassoon. This work is a scholarly edition of previously unedited manuscripts and it is collocated with two late copies located in Oaxaca. Also, the actas capitulares from the Cathedral of Puebla, during the period when Arenzana worked as chapel master (1791-1821), and the documents from the Archivo General de Indias revealed new biographic data, which is confronted with a review of the existing biography. Additionally, the music catalogue in New Spain is included with the repertoire of the archives of Cathedrals from Puebla, Morelia, and Oaxaca, two parishes, and the Basílica de Santa María de Guadalupe.

In this dissertation we will approach the lepton and barion number simmetries as low energy manifestation of more fundamental theories at higher energies. By using effective operators we investigate the possibility of generating reasonable mass terms for leptons as well as suppressed proton lifetime in the Standard Model. We also look at the proton decay processes in a specific grand unified theory (the minimal SU(5)) and comment about the experimental bounds on proton lifetime from Superkamiokande. Finally, we consider a simple gauge extension of Standard Model, the minimal SUC(3) SUL(3) UN(1) model, pointing some drawbaces in this model concerning lepton masses and proton lifetime. We study how it is possible to diminish its scalar content and solve the lepton mass and proton decay issues.

Abstract:
The federal law nº 10.257, 10th of July, 2001, in the articles 182 and 183 of the Brazilian Constitution, regulated and established the "general directives of urban politics". It's the Estatuto da Cidade which explains on its 40th article: "the master plan, approved by municipal law, is the basic tool for the political expansion and development". Nevertheless, according the 2nd paragraph of the referred article, "The range of the planned urban areas shall consider the territory as a whole". The territory of the majority of the Brazilian cities is not necessarily and exclusively urban. A significant portion of their territory is utilized for activities related to primary sector and in some other cases are peculiar areas for its natural resources (dunes, forestland, mangroves, wellheads, etc.). So, the Estatuto da Cidade promulgation, even though not directly, introduces the need of planning also in the rural areas and/or non-urban ones. It's an extremely important innovation, considering that in Brazil, master plans traditionally were limited to the width of urban perimeter. As a consequence of the campaign led by the Ministry of the Cities which has begun in 2004, a great number of urban plans were made in Brazil until nowadays. The main idea of this research is to find out how these master plans ranged the rural municipal areas and non-urban areas and, also, what relations will take them to all these different degrees of deepening. Therefore, a method of analyses was created, which has as object the text of the laws from sample cities, located on the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. By data cross-checking, searched on the law texts, with the profile built on statistics indicators for the cities researched, this study shows a read-out of the deepening levels that have been reached by the plans on rural areas issues.

Abstract:
The recent increase of data volumes raises new challenges for itemset mining algorithms. In this thesis, we focus on transactional datasets (collections of items sets, for example supermarket tickets) containing at least a million transactions over hundreds of thousands items. These datasets usually follow a "long tail" distribution: a few items are very frequent, and most items appear rarely. Such distributions are often truncated by existing itemset mining algorithms, whose results concern only a very small portion of the available items (the most frequents, usually). Thus, existing methods fail to concisely provide relevant insights on large datasets. We therefore introduce a new semantics which is more intuitive for the analyst: browsing associations per item, for any item, and less than a hundred associations at once.To address the items' coverage challenge, our first contribution is the item-centric mining problem. It consists in computing, for each item in the dataset, the k most frequent closed itemsets containing this item. We present an algorithm to solve it, TopPI. We show that TopPI computes efficiently interesting results over our datasets, outperforming simpler solutions or emulations based on existing algorithms, both in terms of run-time and result completeness. We also show and empirically validate how TopPI can be parallelized, on multi-core machines and on Hadoop clusters, in order to speed-up computation on large scale datasets. Our second contribution is CAPA, a framework allowing us to study which existing measures of association rules' quality are relevant to rank results. This concerns results obtained from TopPI or from jLCM, our implementation of a state-of-the-art frequent closed itemsets mining algorithm (LCM). Our quantitative study shows that the 39 quality measures we compare can be grouped into 5 families, based on the similarity of the rankings they produce. We also involve marketing experts in a qualitative study, in order to discover which of the 5 families we propose highlights the most interesting associations for their domain. Our close collaboration with Intermarché, one of our industrial partners in the Datalyse project, allows us to show extensive experiments on real, nation-wide supermarket data. We present a complete analytics workflow addressing this use case. We also experiment on Web data. Our contributions can be relevant in various other fields, thanks to the genericity of transactional datasets.Altogether our contributions allow analysts to discover associations of interest in modern datasets. We pave the way for a more reactive discovery of items' associations in large-scale datasets, whether on highly dynamic data or for interactive exploration systems

Abstract:
TITLE: Analysis of the structure and process of innovation in four large hospitals in Barcelona. INTRODUCTION AND JUSTIFICATION: In Catalonia, in general, and especially inside the hospital healthcare system, we can observe large scientific output, of great quality, in the biomedical field, and low income return as far as patents are concerned, licenses and above all in products to the market, originating from projects developed within the hospitals themselves. This Thesis tries to show the circumstances surrounding these projects, its value chain, the gaps that are produced in the same, and therefore, the possible solutions. OBJECTIVES: There are three: Perform an international benchmarking type analysis between successful cases, and then perform an analysis of the innovative ecosystem of four large hospitals in Barcelona, getting to know the bottlenecks of their projects and, therefore, the possible solutions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The following cases are analysed: Karolinska Institutet, Great Britain’s NHS, Toronto Hospitals and Hospitals in Paris. In regards to the local Hospitals, the following were studied: Hospital de Sant Pau, Hospital Clínic de Barcelona, Sant Joan de Déu d’Esplugues de Llobregat (Barcelona) and Parc de Salut Mar. For the project evolution study, and as fieldwork, a total of eight qualitative interviews were carried out, following the COREQ method (with 32 items) methodology, as well as the Hospitals’ Innovation coordinators, and four renowned experts on Innovation. RESULTS: The results show the systematization and consistent good results, of the innovation processes of the international models; these also showed the difficulty for the development of projects from the Hospitals studied. The interviews are the opinion of the experts concerning the existing gaps and proposals for possible solutions. DISCUSSION: The discussion was basically focused on innovation projects from the Hospitals, their solutions, how the Public-Private relationship must be produced, what to do to improve the current situation, how the Horizon 20/20 concept can be decisive, what strengths and limitations do the Hospitals have and finally, what future proposals may be viable. CONCLUSIONS: The conclusions of the Thesis are: 1. The need of complementarities of the Hospitals. 2. The need of an interface between Hospitals and Companies. 3. The creation of a centralized model with antennae and qualified professionals, who can develop this interface. 4. The need for regulatory changes that would allow the competitiveness of the Hospitals. 5. The opportunity represented through the European strategy, RIS3, as well as, Horizon 20/20. 6. The leverage role that must be developed by the public administrations.

Lister, Toiya. "The Soul of Black Opera: W.E.B. Du Bois’s Veil and Double Consciousness in William Grant Still’s Blue Steel." Digital Commons @ Butler University, 2018. https://digitalcommons.butler.edu/grtheses/508.

Abstract:
In The Souls of Black Folk (1903), W.E.B. Du Bois theorized that black peoples were viewed behind a metaphorical “veil” that consisted of three interrelated aspects: the skin as an indication of African Americans’ difference from their white counterparts, white people’s lack of capacity to see African Americans as Americans, and African Americans’ lack of capacity to see themselves outside of the labels white America has given them. This, according to Du Bois, resulted in the gift and curse of “double consciousness,” the feeling that one’s identity is divided. As African Americans fought for socio-political equality, the reconciliation of these halves became essential in creating a new identity in America by creating a distinct voice in the age of modernity. Intellectuals and artists of the Harlem Renaissance began to create new art forms with progressive messages that strove to uplift the race and ultimately lift the veil. William Grant Still (1895–1978), an American composer of African descent, accomplished this goal in his opera Blue Steel (1934) by changing how blackness—defined here as characteristics attributed to and intended to indicate the otherness of people of African or African-American descent—was portrayed on the operatic stage. Still exemplifies what Houston A. Baker called “mastery of form” by presenting double consciousness in the interactions of three characters, Blue Steel, Venable, and Neola, in order to offer a new and complex reading of blackness.

Grant, David James. "Bottom-Gate TFTs With Channel Layer Deposited by Pulsed PECVD." Thesis, University of Waterloo, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10012/805.

Full text
Abstract:
Nanocrystalline silicon (nc-Si:H) is a promising material for Thin-Film Transistors (TFTs) offering potentially higher mobilities and improved stability over hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H). The slow growth rate of nc-Si:H can be overcome by using pulsed Plasma-Enhanced Chemical Vapour Deposition (PECVD). Pulsed PECVD also reduces powder particle formation in the plasma and provides added degrees of freedom for process optimization. Unlike high frequency PECVD, pulsed PECVD can be scaled to deposit films over large areas with no reduction in performance. For this thesis, silicon thin films were deposited by the pulsed PECVD technique at a temperature of 150 °C and TFTs were made using this material. Radio Frequency (RF) power and silane (SiH4) flow rate were varied in order to study the effect of different levels of crystallinity on the film. Raman spectroscopy, Atomic Force Microscope (AFM), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), electrical conductivity, Hall mobility, optical band gap, and stability under light-soaking were measured using films of two different thicknesses, 50 nm and 300 nm. From the Raman data we see that the 50 nm films deposited with high hydrogen dilution are mostly amorphous, indicating the presence of a thick incubation layer. The 300nm samples deposited with hydrogen dilution, on the other hand, showed very high crystallinity and conductivity, except for 300-2 which was surprisingly, mostly amorphous. AFM and XRD measurements were also performed to confirm the Raman data and get an estimate for the crystallite grain size in the 300 nm samples. The conductivity was measured for all films, and the Hall mobility and carrier concentration was measured for one of the 300 nm films. The thin samples which are mostly amorphous show low conductivity whereas the thick high crystallinity films show high conductivity, and n-type behaviour possibly due to oxygen doping. The optical gap was also measured using Ultra Violet (UV) light and results indicate the possible presence of small crystallites in the 50 nm films. The conductivity's stability under light-soaking was measured to observe the material's susceptibility to degradation, and the 300 nm with high crystallinity were much more stable than the a-Si:H films. All the results of these measurements varied depending on the film and these results are discussed. Bottom-gate TFTs were fabricated using a pulsed PECVD channel layer and an amorphous silicon nitride (a-SiN:H) gate dielectric. The extracted parameters of one of the best TFTs are μsat ≤ 0. 38 cm2 V-1 s-1, Vt,sat ≥ 7. 3 V, Ion/off > 106, and S < 1 V/decade. These parameters were extracted semi-automatically from the basic Field-Effect Transistor (FET) model using a computer program. Extraction using a more complicated model yielded similar results for mobility and threshold voltage but also gave a large power parameter α of 2. 31 and conduction band tail slope of 30 meV. The TFT performance and material properties are presented and discussed. On this first attempt at fabricating TFTs using a nc-Si:H channel layer deposited by pulsed PECVD, results were obtained which are consistent with results for low temperature a-Si:H TFTs and previous pulsed PECVD TFTs. The channel layer was mostly amorphous and non-crystalline, possibly due to the amorphous substrate or insufficient hydrogen dilution in the plasma. The 300 nm films showed, however, that high crystallinity material deposited directly on glass can easily be obtained, and this material showed less degradation under light-soaking than the purely amorphous counterpart. Pulsed PECVD is a promising technique for the growth of nc-Si:H and with further materials development and process optimization for TFTs, it may prove to be useful for the growth of high-quality nc-Si:H TFT channel layers.

Delfosse, Xavier.

Full text
Abstract:

П., and V. P. Repin. Master's thesis, б. и, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/10995/87650.

Full text
Abstract:
The relevance of the master's study is determined by the need to solve at the state level the problem of the upbringing of patriotism as the basis for the consolidation of society and the strengthening of the state. The problem is related to the need to counter the falsification of Russian history, the destruction of the system of traditional moral values of Russian youth. Achieving this goal involves solving the problems of improving the system of upbringing of children and youth, forming a socially active personality of a citizen and patriot. The priority direction of state youth policy is to create conditions for increasing civil responsibility for the fate of the country, ensuring national security and sustainable development of society. In order to actualize the potential of the young generation, it is necessary to support youth project initiatives. The project approach in state youth policy is considered both as an educational technology and as an instrument of upbringing activity. The aim of the work is to improve the technology of military-patriotic upbringing. Tasks solved in the dissertation: analysis of the concepts of military-patriotic upbringing, problems and prospects of the system of military-patriotic upbringing; the study of the potential of the project activities of youth organizations and the Federal Agency for Youth Affairs "Rosmolodezh" in military-patriotic upbringing; Development of a social project of patriotic upbringing "Ball of Heroes of the Fatherland". The object of study is the military-patriotic upbringing of Rosmolodezh, the subject is the project technology of military-patriotic upbringing Research methods: theoretical analysis of regulatory, legal information and scientific literature on the topic of patriotic research; quantitative and qualitative analysis of youth project initiatives. The novelty of the dissertation research is the allocation in the military-patriotic upbringing of a broad, socio-pedagogical component that provides each young man with a deep understanding of his role and place in serving the Fatherland, and a specific one, more aimed at preparing for a specific activity determined by the specifics of military service. The potential of modern Russian youth is actualized within the framework of the All-Russian contest of youth projects and the All-Russian youth forum campaign. The traditional method of analysis, revealing the essence of the project, illustrates the prevalence of military-patriotic education projects developed on the basis of a specific component. A wider socio-pedagogical component is represented minimally in the winning projects. It seems promising and necessary to develop projects of a broader orientation within the framework of military-patriotic upbringing. Theoretical developments can be used to scientifically substantiate military-patriotic youth upbringing programs, to prepare project applications for grant competitions for socially significant initiatives. The developed project can be used to organize cultural and leisure activities as a technology for the formation of value orientations in military-patriotic upbringing in different youth groups.

A study of the legal aspects in three emblematic novels: The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club, by Dickens; Billy Budd, by Melville; and The Bonfire of the Vanities, by Tom Wolfe." Abstract:
The plots of Billy Budd and The Bonfire of the Vanities are organized entirely around a lawsuit. In The Pickwick Papers the trial is only a part, though an important one, of a series of related adventures in which the main characters of the novel participate. In the three novels there is a trial in which the accused is found guilty, although he is actually innocent. In The Posthumous Papers of the Club Pickwick, the author’s main purpose is to present the operation of the legal system, in which the modus operandi of unscrupulous lawyers, who rely only on cheating and deceiving methods, is atthe beginning of and determines the outcome of the lawsuit. In Billy Budd, an innocent is sentenced to death in order to preserve a supposed higher interest: the common good. In The Bonfire of the Vanities, political factors, personal interests, resentments and other worldly elements determine the outcome of the trial. In the three cases, the watchmaking mechanism that a lawsuit appears to be is completely overcome by factors outside it.

Abstract Heaven and Earth create the sect. Sages form the religions. Grand Master Hunyuan learned from Heaven and Earth and founded Weixin Shengjiao (literally the holy religion of the mind). He based Weixin Shengjiao’s principles on laws of Heaven and Earth, with an aim to educate and influence people. Weixin Shengjiao’s principles are also based on mind and feng shui, which derived from I-Ching, or Book of Changes. There are 41 branches, shouldering the responsibilities of introduction, education and passing on the principles of Weixin Shengjiao. The importance of balance is emphasized in I-Ching; thus Grand Master Hunyuan encouraged his disciples to learn ancestor’s wisdom from I-Ching. After studying I-Ching, internalizing it, practicing it, transforming it, and promoting it, people can better understand themselves, others and the principles of the universe. Feng shui, which is closely related to peaceful living condition, is another focus of Weixin Shengjiao. Grand Master Hunyuan educates people about the correct concept of Feng shui and its application, in the hope of improving living conditions so that people can enjoy a peaceful life and thus make a peaceful society. The methodology of this study includes literature analysis and field research. This paper studies the establishment of Weixin Shengjiao and discusses problems and reality that Grand Master Hunyuan faced in his thirty years of promotion. The discussion also includes the origin, the meaning, and the goal of Weixin Shengjiao’s principles. It is hoped that this paper can lay the basis for future study of Weixin Shengjiao. This thesis explores the perspective of cultivation and significance of the Times of YuLin National Master. The perspective of cultivation adapts the Buddhist texts to study YuLin’s self-enlightenment and enlightening others. The way of self-enlightenment mainly based on YuLin’s personal cultivation such as craving, arrogance as well as fame and gain. And through the books YuLin carries out the bodhisattva path by awakening others according to individual capacity, fulfilling skillful means, and propagating the Dharma by giving, which is also a way of enlightening others. YuLin releases oneself by releasing others, benefits oneself by benefiting others, and enlightens oneself by enlightening others. The bodhisattva way is the essence of YuLin National Master, skillful means is the function. Also is the plot as well as no duality between essence and function of YuLin National Master by Grand Master Hsing Yun. The significance of the Times views from the cultural aspects, nationalities and the Times is cultural adaptability of Buddhism spread of YuLin National Master. People-oriented and Buddha spirit is an universal theme of Buddhist literature of YuLin National Master. Using the adroit way of Buddha spirit to enlighten others is the practice of Buddha of secular of YuLin National Master. In conclusion, YuLin National Master for the actual function of the community is "a renaissance of Chinese culture", "the Times literary and artistic creation", "people-oriented social care", "carrying forward Dharma" and "advocating sport", and these features aims to "purify the mind" , which is YuLin National Master possess sanctity.

The paper aims on the cultural life of Francis Matthew Böhmb (1722- 1750), a native of Lubenec (Bohemia), Superior General of the Order of Crusaders with the Red Star in Prague. The Grand Master of the Order took the vows under the rule of sophisticated, erudite lawyer Grandmaster Martin Constantine Beinlich and in the second half of the 17th century tread in the steps of the Restorer of the Order, George Ignatius Pospichal. Sophisticated Böhmb became parish priest in Carlsbad firs. It was in 1720 when the General Prior called him to Prague as a Prior and after Beinlich's death was, on the feast of St. Agnes in March 2, 1722, unanimously elected Grand Master. Thesis followed particularly the cultural activities of the forenamed prelate, in the time of the day-to-day duties of the convent ad Pedem Pontis. It was Beinlich, begining to negotiate an extended Order range beyond the borders of the Czech Kingdom, however it was Böhmb's duty to realize this idea when, in 1723, he installed the Knights of the Cross in Bratislava (Pressburg), and ten years after, in Vienna. In Bratislava he let to build a new commendam's hospital there, as in Vienna, where he used the newly erected prestigious church of St. Charles Borromeo. Abstract:
The main purpose of the study which embodied this dissertation was to follow and reveal the political life of the first Duke of Loulé. Having rapidly become one of the main characters of the Portuguese State during the second half of the nineteenth century, his political career focused at the time of the “Regeneração” (namely the period when he was Prime Minister 1856-1870). We tried to develop his personal and political background departing from his biography. This in view towards a general framing of the history and mentality of his times. We approached the family circumstances pertaining his education, relating to the House where he was born into. This helped us in following his family and social career. In this context we must stress out his marriage to the Infanta D. Ana de Jesus Maria (King João VI’s daughter). This made him brother-in-law to King Pedro IV, and uncle to Queen Maria II and to her sons King Pedro V and Luís I of Portugal. His choosing of the liberal party by defending the Queen’s legitimacy made him a companion to King Pedro IV during the whole Civil War (1832-1834). He fought alongside the King during the “Campanhas da Liberdade” and during the siege of Oporto. This resulted on his appointment as Minister of Foreign Affairs and Navy (1833). With the start of the Constitutional Monarchy through the issuing of the “Carta Constitucional”, and after having restored the dynastic legitimacy; he reclaimed his place as member of the upper House, known as “Câmara dos Pares do Reino”. There he fought bravely for the constitutional principles in which he dearly believed, following with moderation the radical party of the “liberalismo” under the monarchy. This singular state of affairs led him to follow and fight the way of liberal “progressismo”. This resulted on his appointment as Minister of Navy (1835) and Foreign Affairs (1835-1836). This led him to becoming a member of the “Setembrismo”.Consequently being elected deputy to the “Cortes Constituintes” (1837-1838) and Senator (1840). Afterwhich he became united to the “Junta do Porto”, thus serving us Civil Governor of Coimbra (1846-1847). After having signed the “Convenção de Gramido” (1847), he would reclaim once again his place in the upper House. There he was part of the “Nacional” party, opposing the Government. This situation was kept until the victory of the “Regeneração” movement, led by Saldanha (1851). After a brief service in Office (from which he exited in dismay) he would be elected Grand Master of the “Confederação Maçónica Portuguesa” (Freemasonry). At the same time he held office as “Provedor da Casa Pia de Lisboa” (1853-1856). King Pedro V asked him to form a new government as President of the Council of Ministers (Prime Minister) in 1856. This gave way to a new cycle in the Portuguese political scene where he became chief of the “Partido Histórico”.Thus keeping him at the head of Government in Portugal for about nine years. Namely between 1856-1859, 1860-1865 and 1869-1870. A follower of the principles of the “Regeneração” movement, which he helped himself to establish; aka the material and civilizational progress of the country; Loulé would develop a strenuous Government activity, achieving through his mandates to implement several measures which would create the foundations of a Modern State. The reforms carried out by the several Cabinets led by Loulé would enable the country to acquire modern ways of communication, either by road, or by railroad. Besides the notorious increment in public work, we must also stress out the development of statistical studies. Loulé was responsible for the first general census of the population (31st December 1863). In the field of Education and Instruction, important steps would be carried out to the increasing of primary teaching schools; the promotion of schools for girls; industrial and agricultural training; and last but not least the improvements in University, namely Coimbra and Lisbon polytechnic school. In the political-diplomatic field Loulé would endure many difficult situations either in the country or abroad.Namely the issue of the barge “Charles et Georges” which would oppose Portugal to the France of Napoleon III (an issue relating to the abolishment of the slave trade); and the issue of the sisters of charity (a confrontation between liberal ideology and catholic conservatives). In spite of all the setbacks relating to these issues Loulé has succeeded to limiting the damage which could have developed from a French ultimatum. The latter issue was happily concluded to the general satisfaction of the King and State. His moderate personality, which helped the creation of political understandings above the interests of the parties made him a major player when the Government of “Fusão” erupted, joining the moderate “históricos” with the “regeneradores”.This guaranteed a comfortable majority in Parliament, an indispensable tool to the approval of several executive reforms in view of the “material and moral developments of the peoples”; as well as solving the issue of public finances. Loulé’s latter government period in Office sounded promising, as he was able to attract along his ranks great names of his own party. Yet unexpectedly he was to be confronted with the coup of the “Saldanhada”(1870), which led the country to plunge into a dictatorship. In the last years of his life he was to be granted the life office of President of the upper House (1870-1872), from which he would demand his dismissal due to the logic of his principles, which were assuredly liberal. In 1875, during his funeral António Cândido would summarize the exceptional contribution of Loulé towards the consolidation of the Constitutional Monarchy regime: “…during his public life it depended greatly on his name and on his person the just balance of the traditions of the past and the aspirations of the future”.

Moyo, Thamsanqa. "The unsettling of colonialist and nationalist spaces : John Eppel's writings on Zimbabwe." Thesis, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/25320.

Full text
Abstract:
The Rhodesian and Zimbabwean space-time involved the creation and adoption of hegemonic discourses that influenced ways of behavior, thinking, perceiving reality and particular ways of identity construction based on mystifying nationalisms. In raced and politically charged spaces, such grand narratives depended, for their currency, on stereotypes, essentialisms, domination and dichotomization of ‘nation as narration’. The metanarratives of the two spaces functioned as discursive tools for the legitimation of particular forms of exclusions, elisions and distortions. As discursive and polemical literary tools, these discourses always found sustenance and perpetuation in the existence of a different other. In other words, these constructed narratives sought to use difference as a basis for scapegoating and naturalizing racial, economic, political and resource asymmetries in the Rhodesian and Zimbabwean spaces. Power was wielded not in the service of, but against, the majority who are marginalized. This study explores John Eppel’s writings on the constructions of both Rhodesia and Zimbabwe as ideological spaces for the legitimation of power based on class, race and politics. I argue that Eppel’s selected writings are a literary intervention that proffers a satirically dissident critique of the foundational myths, symbols and narratives of Rhodesian and Zimbabwean space-time. The study argues that Eppel offers literary resistance to unproblematized identity compositions predicated on socially constructed but skewed categories that limit the contours of belonging and citizenship. The Rhodesian space is viewed as a palimpsest upon which is overwritten the Zimbabwean patriotic discourse that also authorize racism, marginalization, power abuse and other forms of exclusion. In examining Eppel’s satiric disruption of both spaces, I use certain strands of the Postcolonial Theory that problematize issues of nation, identity, race, tribe and power. Its usefulness lies in its rejection of fixities, of absolutes and in its general counter-hegemonic thrust. I therefore invoke the theorizations of Frantz Fanon, Homi Bhabha, Maria Lara, Paul Gilroy, Mikhail Bakhtin and Benita Parry. These form the theoretical base with which the study confronts Eppel’s writings on Rhodesia and Zimbabwe. The focal texts used are: Absent: The English Teacher (2009), selected short stories in White Man Crawling (2007) and The Caruso of Colleen Bawn (2004), The Holy Innocents (2002), Hatchings (2006), selected poems from Spoils of War (1989), Songs my Country Taught me: Selected Poems 1965-2005(2005) and D.G.G.Berry’s The Great North Road (1992). I conclude by arguing that Eppel creates a fictional life-world where race, origin, politics, class and culture are figured as polarizing identity markers that should be re-negotiated and even transcended in order to materialize a more inclusive multicultural society. To the extent that both the colonial and post-independence eras cross-fertilize each other in terms of occlusions, creating hegemonic narratives, resort to race, violence, silencing and erasure of certain subjectivities, Eppel advocates the ‘hatching’ of a new national, moral and inclusive ethos that supersedes the claustrophobia of both spaces.

Abstract:
The dissertation deals with the reception of Dutch realism in the late Gothic panel painting in Bohemia. Its aim is to examine the principles of reception of new artistic forms and ideas that originated in the Dutch art centers in the 15th century. The Czech painting of the 15th century was adopting these innovative trends exclusively from the neighbouring countries. Therefore, the work addresses mainly issues related to artistic exchanges between Bohemia and the surrounding - mostly German-speaking - regions. It looks into the specific ways in which artistic exchange took place - the mobility of artists, art imports, the importance of graphic and other models. The dissertation focuses on the most important examples that show the reception of Dutch realism: The Ark of Grand Master Puchner, The Křivoklát Altarpiece, and works associated with it. These matters are addressed mainly through a formal stylistic analysis and formal comparison. In the case of the Puchner Ark, via these methods, it has been possible to point out a possible artistic basis of the author in Swabia - within a circle of the followers of the Master of the Sterzing Altarpiece. The dissertation has tried to prove the artistic origin of the Master of the Litoměřice Altarpiece within the circle of the Ulm painter B. Zeitblom. These...

Tarulli, Robert. "School-centred neighbourhoods: an analysis of grande prairie's community knowledge campus." 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/1993/4092.

Abstract:
Schools have always played an important role in modern society. They are a reflection of local values and changing educational and societal trends. The 21st century brings with it a multitude of challenges as we design schools and communities that embrace and engage learners in an era of global communication and unfettered knowledge exchange. This project explores the concept of a school-centred neighbourhood in response to these changes. Through a case study review of Grande Prairie’s Community Knowledge Campus, the study looks at the social influences of a multi-use school facility through the use of indicators of social capital, lifelong learning and learning-based community development. Interviews with school and municipal planners as well as facility users are used to explore the intended purpose of the development and to measure the effectiveness of this concept. The study concludes that multi-use school facilities have a measurable impact on the promotion of these social elements and thus contribute to the creation of a school-centred neighbourhood. Six recommendations are presented at the end of this study for use by school and municipal planners. These include: i) central locations and community linkages, ii) efficiencies and flexibility through multi-use school facilities, iii) the promotion of joint-use agreements, iv) coordinated school board capital planning and municipal land use planning, v) establishing a common planning language between schools and municipalities and vi) community planning and neighbourhood design through CKCs.

Abstract:
The goal of this Master thesis is to demonstrate Witteńs mechanism in selected extensions of the Standard model based on the Pati-Salam gauge group. The purpose of this mechanism is to obtain an extremely large Majorana mass term for right-handed neutrinos at the two-loop level and consequently light physical masses of neutrinos using the type I see-saw mechanism. The existence of corresponding Feynman diagrams without any interactions of vector bosons is presented. While it is impossible to construct this type of corrections in minimal SO(10) or SU(5)xU(1) model in Pati-Salam model they may be even dominant. Subsequently, implications of possible partial gauge coupling unification or even embedding of the Pati-Salam group into a gauge group of "Great Unified Theory" are considered. At the end the possibility of unacceptably fast proton decay is inspected. The discussed models are concluded to be potentially realistic but only at the cost of predictivity, since completely unknown Yukawa couplings appear in numerous key relations. 1

Iyer, Abhishek Muralidhar. "Randall-Sundrum Model as a Theory of Flavour." Thesis, 2013. http://etd.iisc.ernet.in/2005/3381.

Full text
Abstract:
The discovery of the Higgs boson by the LHC provided the last piece of the puzzle neces- sary for the Standard Model (SM) to be a successful theory of electroweak scale physics. However there exist various phenomenological reasons which serve as pointer towards the existence of physics beyond the Standard Model. For example the explanation for the smallness of the neutrino mass, baryon asymmetry of the universe, the presence of dark matter and dark energy etc. are not within purview of the Standard Model. Con- ceptual issues like the gauge hierarchy problem, weakness of gravity provide some of the theoretical motivation to pursue theories beyond the SM. We consider scenarios with warped extra-dimensions (Randall-Sundrum (RS) Model ) as our preferred candidate to answer some of the questions raised above. RS model gives an elegant geometric solution to address the hierarchy between the two fundamental scales of nature i.e. Planck scale and electroweak scale. In addition to this, the geometry of RS serves as a useful setup wherein the fermion mass hierarchy problem can also be solved. The goal of this thesis is to investigate whether RS model can be an acceptable theory of avour while at the same time serving as a solution to the hierarchy problem. In Chapter[1] we begin with a brief introduction of the SM, highlighting issues which pro- vides the necessary motivation for constructing new physics models. Various candidates of Beyond Standard Model (BSM) physics are introduced and a few preliminaries es- sential to understand frameworks with additional spatial-dimensions ( at and warped) is provided. In Chapter[2] we specialize to the case of warped extra-dimensions and motivate the need to have the SM elds in the bulk. Mathematical details related to the analysis of various spin elds (0; 12; 1 and 2) in a warped background necessary to understand relevant phenomenology is provided. The lack of knowledge of Dirac or Majorana nature of the neutrino leads to a wide variety of possibilities as far as neutrino mass generation is concerned. In Chapter[3] we focus on the leptonic sector where three cases of neutrino mass generation are consid- ered: a)Planck Scale lepton number violation (LLHH case) b) Dirac neutrinos c) Bulk Majorana mass terms. We then study the implications of each case on the charged lepton mass tting. The case with Planck scale lepton number violation in normal RS scenario requires large and negative values for the bulk mass parameters for the charged singlets cE. Dirac neutrinos and the case with Bulk Majorana mass terms give good t to data. For completeness, the ts for the hadronic sector is provided in the appendix. In Chapter[4] avour violation for each of three cases introduced in Chapter[3] is studied. For the case with Planck scale lepton number violation, the non-perturbative Yukawa coupling between the SM singlets and the KK states render the higher order diagrams incalculable. Lepton avour violation (LFV) is particularly large for the Dirac case and the bulk Majorana case for low Kaluza-Klein(KK) mass scales. We then invoke the ansatz of Minimal Flavour violation to suppress LFV with low lying KK scales and examples of avour group is provided for both cases. In Chapter[5] we present an example with a type II two Higgs doublet model applied to the LLHH case. The setup o ers a solution where LLHH scenario can be consistently realized in RS model, where the masses and mixing angles in the leptonic sector can bet with O(1) choice of bulk parameters. Assumption of global lepton number conservation (like in Dirac neutrinos) could lead to problems in theories of quantum gravity where it does not hold. This leads us to the question whether Dirac neutrinos can be naturally realized in nature. In Chapter[6] we consider the special case of bulk Majorana mass encountered in Chapter[3] where the bulk Dirac mass terms for the right handed neutrino is set to zero. We nd that this leads to a case where the e ective zero mode neutrino mass is of Dirac type with negligible e ects from the tower of Majorana states. In Chapter[7] we consider RS at the GUT scale which no longer serves as a solution to the hierarchy problem. SUSY is introduced in the bulk and the low energy SUSY serves as a solution to the hierarchy problem. Such models serve as a useful alternative to SUSY models with family symmetries (e.g. Froggatt-Nielsen Model). However the solutions to the Yukawa hierarchy problem are constrained due to anomaly cancellation conditions. In Chapter[8] supersymmetry breaking due to radion mediation in addition to brane localized sources is considered and detailed analysis of the running of soft masses and the low energy avour observables is considered for both cases separately. In Chapter[9] we conclude and present future directions.
