Full textDespite the large expenditure that is dedicated to forest fire suppression in Euro-Mediterranean countries, Australia and North-America, firefighters still face large and severe fire events which eventually entrap them. Investigation of Fire Services’ internal reports addresses here the weather and terrain leading to these dangerous fires. In France, strong wind is the main driver of the largest fires and of the fires that entrap firefighters. However, high temperature is also a key contributor as it influences violent fires with high rates of surface spread. In Australia, a lot of firefighters’ entrapments are due to shifts in wind direction, but others are associated to strong winds in rugged terrain. Whatever the regional specificities, more than 100 firefighters’ entrapments across the world were investigated to find the contribution of dynamic fire behaviors in these entrapments. The results return three different types of fires. During topography-influenced fires, in mountainous area, almost all the entrapments happen on slopes steeper than 20°, prone to flame attachment. During wind-driven fires, leeward slopes prone to vorticity-driven lateral fire spread are the most prominent configurations associated with entrapments. Finally, during convective fires, which are the most violent, entrapments can happen far away from any dangerous configuration. Firefighters should adjust their training courses and promote fire behavior analysts (FBAN) capabilities to benefit from the results of this work and improve their safety. FBAN may consider feedbacks from previous fires to suggest the most efficient and secure firefighting strategies and locations

Full textCEO compensation rose substantially in the last decades and contributed to the rise in high revenues. Two typologies for the controlling shareholders are suggested to study the evolution and the pay-setting process of CEO compensation in large French listed firms. The first typology is based on the identity of shareholders and differentiates active and involved ones to passive or diversified ones. While the former are involved in the industrial strategy of the firm, the latter comprise shareholders whose strategy is mainly financial. CEO pays are higher and more sensitive to short-term performance in this latter case. The second typology is defined according to two criteria, namely the degree and seniority of control. They respectively refer to the share of equity and the number of years of control. Based on a Panel Threshold Regression (PTR) model, CEO pay policies allows to differentiate four regimes in the degree of control, and two in the seniority of control, namely dispersed, influent, dominant, and majority control on the one hand, and new and long-term controlling shareholders, on the other hand. These two typologies are eventually used to study the evolution of CEO pay over a 12-year period in France. Beyond factors related to the so-called “market for CEOs”, the typologies reveal a catching up and contagion effect since the implementation of transparency since 2001, and a tremendous rise in bonuses that went hand in hand with the rise in market capitalizations and subsequent changes in ownership patterns

Full textThe main subject of the thesis is to analyse the contribution of the concept of competence to explain the relation between size of the firm and innovation. We analyse the major books of j. A. Schumpeter to put in light that these interpretations of neo-schumpeterians are subject to critics. Taking in account the conceptual coherence between books of schumpeter, we show that the model of "schumpeter i" prevailing. After a review of the theoretical and empirical approaches, a conceptual approach is proposed to elaborate a theory of the firm based on the concept of competence. This perspective is prevalent to explain the variety of innovative behaviour of the firm. Two models are developed. Firstly, we develop a model of innovative behaviour of a firm in function of his repertory of competencies in a dynamical, non-stochastic context. Secondly, we demonstrate mathematically the theory of organisational knowledge creation of nonaka's model [1994]. We propose also to analyse ours results in empirical terms. We show that the model of 'schumpeter i' is refuted and globally big enterprise are more competent to innovate

Full textFire Safety Engineering studies often rely on the use of Computational Fluid Dynamics, but several recent studies (e.g. Dalmarnock 2007, Arcueil Numérique 2009) have highlighted significant differences between experimental data and the results of numerical simulations. The numerical models are often rather sensitive to the choice of boundary conditions, and may depend on key parameters which are poorly understood. The research presented in this thesis addresses some of these questions, using the CFD code FDS to simulate a set of experimental test cases, and to test the sensitivity of the simulations to different input parameters. The general configuration studied is that of a thermal plume generated by a heated plate, either rising freely or else impacting on a ceiling. Radial profiles of 1st and 2nd order statistics of temperature and velocity agree well with published data, as does the axial variation of Mass, Momentum and Buoyancy fluxes, and the local Richardson number. A detailed study of the entrainment coefficient shows that this varies with distance from the heat source, between about 0.4 and 0.1; this is explained by the dependence of entrainment on the local Richardson number and the density difference between the plume and the ambient air. The comparison between simulations has also been used to investigate the applicability of different sub-grid scale models for this type of flow. Finally, a methodology has been developed for evaluating the sensitivity of the calculations to different input parameters, and the method has been applied to a test configuration representing a fire in a building. The results show the relative importance of both explicitly-defined parameters that characterize the situation (thermal power of the fire, ventilation regime inside the building) and implicit model parameters

Full textThe presence of women in various aspects of life of societies has changed throughout the years. This work aims to analyse the effect of gender diversity in the profitability of firms, considering, for such study, a sample of Portuguese firms that have increased importance for the economy, since we consider the companies highlighted by “EXAME” Magazine in its annual 2013 edition as the "500 Biggest and Best" companies. The results show evidence that the presence of women on boards of directors of the companies generates negative effects on firm’s performance. This result may be related to the degree of risk associated with the decisions and policies implemented by administrative boards where women participate. Overall, the results suggest that the presence of women on boards of directors will influence the functioning of the board of directors and the company itself.

Full textThe dissertation is divided into three parts. In part i, we review the literature about corporate inertia, which appears to be a cornerstone of an emerging strategic theory of the firm. Three different types of inertia are identified: organizational, competitive and technological inertia. We identify and articulate the many causes of inertia in a 5*2 matrix which thrives on previous but partial contributions on the causes of organizational and competitive inertia. We then propose to study inertial phenomena in an industry where they are frequent. We choose to study the microcomputer software industry, which seems to highly influenced by technological intertia of leading firms. In part ii, we use an inductive and historical approach to describe the evolution of microcomputer software from an inertial point of view. Particular attention is devoted to methodological issues. To establish solid construct validity, three different classes of data were used in this study: archival documentation, a questionnaire and interviews. The study covers the whole history of microcomputer sofware, from its humble origins in the early seventies to the recent advent of what we call " distributed microcomputing ". The most interesting results concern microcomputer application software. Three forces appear to have shaped competition in this industry: technological innovation at a considerable pace, standardization, and technological inertia of leading firms. The combination of these three forces leads to the identification of four product-generations with systematic changes in market leadership, resulting in the present domination of the microsoft corporation. Concluding remarks are made about some possible explanations of such a phenomenon, and the significance of 'first-mover advantages' in information technology (it) industries. In part iii, we use a game-theoretic approach based on information incompleteness to explain why in industries with sudden and radical changes, leading competitors have difficulties to understand the impact of an innovative technology, and thus often loose their technological and market edge. The game is designed to reflect the conditions in the microcomputer application software industry, where changes in market leadership have been the rule each time a new product generation, based on a new design, has appeared. Three propositions are made concerning

Full textThis thesis work is focused on the development of a wildfire spread model and its integration into a decision-making tool for planning firefighting operations. The fire spread model is based on a network model to represent vegetation distribution on land and considers the main heat transfer mechanisms from burning to unburnt vegetation items (i.e. radiation from the flaming zone and embers, surface convection and wind-driven convection through the fuel bed, and radiative cooling from the heated fuel element to the environment). The effects of local conditions of wind, topography, and vegetation are included. To address the challenge of real-time fire spread simulations, the model is also extended in two ways. First, the Monte Carlo method is used in conjunction with a genetic algorithm to create a database of radiation view factors from the flame to the fuel surface for a wide variety of flame properties and environment conditions. Second, the front-tracking method is introduced in order to reduce the amount of data to store and handle during propagation. The fire spread model is validated against data from different fire scenarios, showing it is capable of capturing the trends observed in experiments in terms of rate of spread, and area and shape of the burn, with reduced computational resources. It is then extended to evaluate fire risk at the wildland fire interface. In the frame of the TechForFire project coordinated by the NOVELTIS company, the new version of the fire spread model is coupled with the other modules of the operational chain. Finally, data from the fire of Velaux in 2015 are used to evaluate the TechForFire solution

Full textRecent literature in international economics and macroeconomics has pointed to the major role played by large firms in shaping aggregate economic outcomes. Large firms influence, inter alia, economic fluctuations, performance on export markets and inequalities between workers and between consumers. It is therefore crucial to understand how large firms emerge and behave. In the present thesis, I look at three independent aspects of this question. First, I study how exporting firms adjust the quality of the products they export in response to an intensification of "low-cost" competition in foreign markets. To this end, I develop a new method to estimate the quality of products at the firm-level and I find evidence that firms upgrade quality in response to "low-cost" competition. Second, I investigate the way exporting firms adjust their sales when a demand shock (e.g. an economic recession, a war) occurs in one of their destinations. In the context of the Champagne wine industry during the 2000-2001 economic recession, I show that firms reallocate their sales toward markets where demand conditions are relatively more favorable. Lastly, I look at the way firms adjust their size and their mix of capital and labor in response to labor regulations which are more binding to large firms. I find that firms shrink and substitute capital for labor to mitigate the labor cost of the regulation. At the aggregate level, preliminary results suggests that workers gain from the regulation while capital owners lose

Full textThe phasing between increases in temperature and greenhouse gas concentrations during large climatic variations in the past is classically estimated using analyses in polar ice cores, in the ice phase for the temperature and in the gas phase (trapped air bubbles) for the concentration of greenhouse gases. This phasing is still insufficiently constrained and solving this problem requires a better understanding of the mechanical process of snow to ice metamorphism near to the top of the ice sheet (i.e. the firn, about 100 m deep). In the absence of melting, the transformation of snow (a material with open porosity in contact with the atmosphere) into ice (a material containing isolated bubbles) occurs progressively as a response to temperature gradients near the surface, and the weight of overlying snow in deeper layers. Depending on temperature and precipitation conditions, this process occurs in a few decades to several millennia and a ~100 meters depth range. It controls the age difference between the ice and the entrapped gases. Predicting the gas trapping depth is a major issue in paleoclimatology, especially in order to understand the phasing between temperature changes and changes in greenhouse gas concentrations.A thermo-mechanical model of snow densification has been developed at LGGE, it includes the main mechanical processes, the thermal properties of ice, and gas trapping criteria. The model performances can be tested and improved using experimental studies of modern firns (density, open/closed porosity ratio, etc). For firnification under ancient climates, measurements of isotopes of inert gases (d15N et d40Ar) in the air trapped in ice cores provide direct informations about past variations of firn structure (e.g. diffusive zone thickness). Large differences between firn densification model outputs and gas isotopic data are obtained in Antarctica, and imply a large uncertainty on past climatic reconstructions. Understanding this discrepancy is a major issue in paleoclimatology. As part of this thesis work, we took into account the effects of the temperature dependence of activation energies and impurities (dust) on the firn densification speed. It allowed to reconcile the model results with available data. The modified model results show an overall consistency with measured density profiles of present-day polar firns and isotopes of inert gases over deglaciations (also called terminations). We also analyze new high resolution measurements of d15N and d40Ar over Terminations 2 (129-138ka) and 3 (243-251ka) on the Dome C and Vostok ice cores. We have shown that the different evolutions of d15N between different sites and different deglaciations are largely explained by differences in accumulation rates that control the snow/ice transition depth. We also showed that the use of air isotopes was an important complement to the use of water isotopes to constrain local climatic dynamics in eastern Antarctica during deglaciations
