Full textWorklife has undergone major changes in recent decades, partly as a result of digitalization development. Information- and communication technology (ICT) enables a more boundaryless work, since neither time nor space no longer separates work from private life. Earlier research highlighted that the new way of working causes difficulties in balancing work and private life. The aim of the present study was to contribute to an increased understanding of how the principals handle the boundaryless work and to what extent ICT and social support are related to their ability to handle the boundaryless work. The result has been analyzed from Karasek and Theorells (1990) demand, control and support model, Clarks (2000) border theory and relevant concepts and previous research. Nine respondents participated in this qualitative study and the result showed that the boundaryless work is mostly positive. At the same time it imposes higher demands on the individual to take responsibility for managing the balance between work and private life. ICT has both shown to facilitate and obstruct the handling of boundaryless work. Finally the result shows that social support does not have a direct connection with how the principals handle the boundaryless work. However, social support can act as a buffer to increase the ability to handle the effects of boundaryless work.

Full textThis master thesis has been designed to investigate how the boundaryless work is expressed among managers of City building department in Lulea county. The purpose of the study has therefore been communicated with the following research questions; 1) How does the boundaryless work among managers at various levels of the City building department express itself? 2) In which ways have the managers been affected by the boundaryless work? What consequences has it resulted in? 3) What actions can the departments HR function apply by improving or developing the managers' work situation in relationship to the boundaryless work? The study has had a qualitative approach in which fifteen semi structured interviews have been the basis for the study’s result. The theoretical framework of the study has consisted theories on boundaryless work by Allvin et al. (1998; 2006). The theoretical framework has also been supplemented with Karasek and Theorell's (1990) three-factor model to gain a deeper understanding of the interviewees' work situation. The study's results have shown that the boundaryless work expresses itself through a high degree of flexibility and workload. Both positive and negative consequences of the boundaryless work have emerged among the managers. Within the discussion section, it is argued that the City building department needs to apply several efforts to reduce the negative effects of boundaryless work. The argument has resulted in proposals to reduce the number of physical meetings, increase the skills development of new managers, encourage and communicate to managers that they need to be off duty on their spare time, create more private working hours among managers and finally ensure an increasing level of support from the supporting functions (HR, etc.) among managers.

Full textThe technical development has enabled a new kind of work that is more boundaryless in the sense that the work can be done anywhere and at any time. This development has also led to more unclear boundaries between work and private life. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate how the boundaryless work affects secondary school teachers working at a secondary school located in a municipality in the northern part of Sweden. The theories that are applied in this study are the Demand-Control-Support Model (Karasek, 1979), Sense of Coherence (Antonovsky, 1991, the Allostatic Model of Stress (McEwen, 1998) and the Coping Strategies (Lazarus & Folkman, 1984). The questions this study aims to answer are: do individuals experience that they have a clear boundary between their work and their private life? How are the individuals affected by being available after the end of a workday? Do the individuals have any strategies to handle the boundaryless work? A total of nine semi-structured interviews were conducted with nine secondary school teachers. The collected data was orthographically transcribed and then thematically analyzed. The outcome of the study shows difficulties related to the boundaries between work and private life, which led to different physical and psychological consequences of a negative nature.

Full textAcademic teachers are surrounded by many demands from different directions and a high workload that they need to handle in order to balance their working and personal life. Research is inadequate how academic teachers manage to balance their high workload with their privacy. Purpose: The aim of the study is to illuminate the balance between work and personal life in the higher education sector from a health education perspective. Theoretical reference framework: The theoretical frame of reference consists of a health theoretical point of departure in the demand-control and support model and an educational starting point in adaptation and development- oriented learning. Method: The methodology from which the study is based is of a qualitative nature where the empirical material was collected through three focus group interviews. A total of thirteen college teachers participated in the study. The study commuted between a deductive and inductive mode of work and the material was analyzed by the analysis method categorization. Result: The worksituation of academic teachers is characterized by both organizational and individual requirements and this combination of requirements can create boundless work depending on the individual's personality. In order to handle the demands of academic teachers, they develop different individual strategies. They also experience a high level of control, which is described as both positive and negative as they experience job satisfaction, yet provide high levels of control that they work a lot of overtime and from home. Academic teachers describe shortcomings in social support, since the higher education sector is characterized by highly individual-based tasks and more team- based work is desired. Conclusion: The main conclusion drawn is that the boundary between work and privacy consists of several different boundaries that are difficult to define, and that the attitude of academic teachers is that they adapt and that they accede to the prevailing working conditions instead of counteracting and changing them.

Full textMobile technology has made a big contribution to the so called flexible work in both time and place, as many professionals can perform work at anytime and in whatever place. Because of this, boundaries between work and private life have become increasingly blurred, a so called boundless working life. These limitlessness and flexible working hours have opened up for IT-based mobile work, which refers to professional groups who can work with IT-based tools regardless of time and place. One occupational group that has become progressively dependent of its IT-based tools is economists, which makes it an interesting group to target for our study. When being dependent of digital worktools, one obvious consequence is that it becomes difficult to refrain from using it. The question then is, how mobile functions can be used to enable boundaries between work and life. Through a literature study, the study first aims to investigate which mobile functions are available to set boundaries between work and private life. The study then aims to investigate to which extend mobile functions are used to enable control of the boundaries. This will be supplemented by a questionnaire study directed toward economists. The result of the questionnaire study showed a different range of use of the mobile functions. Some were more popular than others, which leads to the conclusion that the respondents use mobile functions to varying degrees.

Full textThis study deepens within the topic boundaryless work and the aim is to visualize the experiences of, and the attitudes towards, that way of working. This is relevant since boundaryless work is becoming more and more common due to the technology that implements in to our daily work. Through a qualitative case study and nine interviews with employees at the case company, empirical data was gathered on their experiences and attitudes towards the way of working. The respondents were divided in to three subgroups based on their role at the company. As it turned out there were connections between how the respondents from the different subgroups experienced the way of working and there were vital differences between the roles. The attitudes on the other hand were similar regardless of the work roles, though the respondents that noticed flexible work the least were more critical to it. Positive attitudes do not mean that underlying issues or difficulties should be overlooked, since these can become more critical later on.

Full textThe increasing digitalisation of the labour market resulting in a flexibility among employees become a fact. Work can be executed anywhere at any time which sets higher demands on the employees since there is an increase in accessibility. The boundaries between work and personal life disintegrates and obtaining a healthy balance between the spheres gets more difficult to obtain. This study aims to examine how municipal employees in Human Resources perceive the use of work mail during and outside of work hours. The formulates questions regards how employees experience mail as a work instrument, the psychosocial effects work mail bring the employees as well as how they experience the demarcation between work and personal life. The study relies on the demand-control model as well as the borderless work. In order to answer the purpose of the study and the formulated questions, qualitative interviews have been carried out with five participants from the municipal HR-department. The results were subsequently interpreted and analysed by a hermeneutic approach. It appeared that the employees experience their mail as a limiting element in their workday due to the occurrence of the inadequate information provided in assignments and various errands. The employees unanimously state that a cluttered inbox generate in a loss of control and result in an increased level of stress, present expectations of accessibility and feedback can be experienced as paralysing. There are different opinions about whether the boundary between work and private time should be applied. Some employees see it as an advantage to let the spheres encroach on each other as it leads to an increased sense of self-control by enabling correspondence on the private time while others consider that an unclear separation of the spheres strictly entails negative consequences for their own health.

Full textBackground: Due to the development of the information and communication technology the boundaries of where and when to carry out your work have faded. In other words, the work has become boundless. Although this allows for flexibility over working hours, place of work and increased control over your work it can also lead to overload and work related stress, which can have a negative impact on work life balance and therefore health. Also, in the long run it can adversely affect the organization as it can lead to reduced productivity, sickness absence and staff turnover, which is associated with greater costs. As a teacher at the academy there are far reaching opportunities to extend the workplace’s hours and location due to the prevalence of information and communication technology, where this study examines the experiences university lecturers have of the boundless work and its impact on health. Aim: The aim of the present study is to investigate university teachers' experiences of the boundless work within the academy to increase understanding of how boundless work can affect health and thereby increasing understanding of how it may be a health factor or risk factor. Method: As the present study aimed at capturing individual peoples’ experiences, thoughts and descriptions regarding their work situation with boundless work in a nuanced manner, a qualitative method was chosen. The gathering of empirical data was done through ten individual semi- structured interviews at a university in Sweden. Conclusion: The study's results indicate that social support is important in boundless work and can, among other things, help stressful periods to be perceived as less demanding. Continuously being available, however, can affect health negatively, with the perceived stress that comes with availability via email. Furthermore, the result suggests that self-control and freedom at work can be both a risk and a healthy factor depending on how boundaries occur to the rest of life, which may depend on the individual's own requirements and career prospects, as well as the joy of his work. This means that the individual’s ability to create boundaries between work and private life is fundamental in a boundless work.

Full textThe workload of women and men are now higher than before and the boundary between work and personal life has more or less been erased, which may have adverse health effects. With today's technology, employees can be accessible to a greater degree, and the work can be performed in more places than the workplace. The purpose of this study is to explore how individuals with active jobs manage the balance between work and private life, and if those with active jobs may suffer ill health because of work. Active work means the jobs with high control and high demands according to Karasek´s demand/control- model, which is said to be the "best" works, to perform high without suffering ill health. In this study, a qualitative study has been made by interviews with seven respondents working in active works. The findings shows that individuals manage the balance between work and private life differently and whether they suffer of ill health is also very individual. It also appears that those with active jobs may suffer ill health due to heavy workload, but it is possible to learn how to handle it, by finding the right strategies that are appropriate for their situation.

Full textThe emergence of an increasingly flexible working life has contributed to the gradual reduction of the boundaries between work and leisure. At the same time digitization has made it possible for a constant connection and with the help of various technological aids. Individuals can now work anywhere and at any time. This means that responsibility is attributed to the individual himself being the one who controls and structures his work. At the same time we have increased competition, that demands better availability and a customer service in world class. This study aims to investigate whether a borderless work turns out for real estate agents at two offices. With help of Goffman's dramaturgical perspective, Hochschild's theory of emotional work and Foucault's theory of self-disciplined governance, we have analyzed our empirical data. Furthermore, we have started from previous research that concerns flexible work, recovery, influence of technology, roles and the boundary between working time and leisure time. We started from a qualitative method and conducted 8 semistructured interviews. The result showed that the real estate brokerage profession in a large extent includes borderless work. At the same time it is a profession that requires a skilled “actor” to be able to respond to the customers. The constant accessibility is a factor that everyone experiences in different ways and has therefore developed strategies to be able to handle this. Women felt less confident in their profession compared to men, based on that costumers often questioned women’s knowledge. Furthermore, the different experiences and strategies may be based on whether the respondents relate to the professional role's requirements or not.

Full textThe purpose of this paper is to explore how different aspects of working life affect the individual. Our starting point in this paper is that we are critical of jobs with high autonomy that is becoming increasingly common. To assist us, we have a lot of previous research as well as critical theory and Foucault’s theory about power and surveillance that guides us through the research process. The selection is based on previous statistics produced by the ESS, which consists of a collaboration between 24 European countries. The essay test different aspects of paid work and its affect on work-life balance. The results show that the higher the degree of autonomy the individual has in his/her work, the less dissatisfied he/she is with time spent between work and leisure. A higher degree of autonomy does in fact lead to the individual worrying about work-related problems in his/her leisure time. Our conclusion is that there are good reasons to pay attention to what this increasingly common tendency can affect the individual.

Full textMany workplaces today on the labor market is characterized by a flexible work. This have been theorized in sociology as a situation of boundaryless work for the individual were the limit between work and leisure becomes difficult to handle. The freedom that flexible work makes possible moves the responsible to the individual to set limits between work and leisure. The fact that the terms of employment has become vaguer has led to that the responsibility to organize and structure work more and more lies on the individual. The aim of this study is to investigate how the flexible work is perceived by white color workers and how they handle their situation. Previous research focus on the meaning of flexible work and how the individual perceive and handle it. This study focus on the meaning of flexible work by using qualitative interviews with white color employee in an organization in the energy-industry. The result of the study shows that the flexible work is percieved as predominant positive but that it also can consist of negative aspects that the individual needs to handle. It is also found that the flexibility is important in order to do this kind of work. The result also shows that the percieved degree of flexibility seems to differ depending on occupational status.
